New Polls: Romney’s Libya Comments Did Serious Damage

Reuters: 40% felt less favorable toward Romney, Monmouth: 29% disapproved of Romney
Politics • Views: 31,551

As we noted yesterday, the latest Pew Research survey found that Mitt Romney’s crass attack on President Obama after the Libyan embassy killings had done Romney serious damage. Now we have two more new polls from Monmouth University and Reuters/Ipsos with similar results: Romney’s Libya Comments Landed With a Thud: Reuters/Ipsos Poll.

(Reuters) - Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney was the loser in a political fight over U.S. reaction to attacks last week on American diplomatic compounds in Libya and Egypt, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll on Tuesday.

Four in 10 U.S. voters felt less favorably toward Romney after hearing about his criticism of President Barack Obama’s handling of the attacks in which the U.S. ambassador to Libya was killed.

Only 26 percent of the registered voters polled felt worse about Obama after hearing about the Democrat’s comments about the violence in the Middle East, the survey said.

Benjy Sarlin at TPM has info on the Monmouth University poll: Romney’s Libya Response May Have Done Real Damage.

Polls show significant swaths of America are interested in the Mideast attacks and generally unhappy with Romney’s reaction.

A Monmouth Universitysurvey released Monday indicated that 90 percent of respondents were familiar with the crises in Libya and Egypt, including 61 percent who had heard “a lot” about it. Among likely voters, Obama got positive marks for his handling of the situation from 39 percent of respondents and negative marks from 27 percent. But only 25 percent approved of Romney’s behavior during the same period versus 29 percent who disapproved.

“If the past week was Mitt Romney’s opportunity to show how he would handle a foreign crisis, the GOP nominee did not put his best foot forward as far as voters are concerned,” Patrick Murray, director of the Monmouth University Polling Institute, said in a press release.

These aren’t the only polls that look bad for Mitt Romney, either. The new NBC/WSJ poll is especially dismal:

The new NBC/WSJ poll asks a separate question: Which candidate — Obama or Mitt Romney — is better prepared to lead the country four years from now? On this question, 47 percent of voters pick the president, while 36 percent choose Romney.

Mitt Romney: Dangerously Incompetent

To sum up the logic flaws of Romney's argument about the 47%:

First, that 47% obviously contains a high % of Republicans.

Second, 1/2 of American federal income taxpayers regularly vote Democratic.

Third, what kind of a person has such a low opinion of some 1/2 of the American public that he thinks they would rather get relatively meager financial support from the government rather than hold jobs that would pay them enough to require they pay federal income taxes?

Fourth, 9/10 of entitlement benefits go to seniors, the working poor, and disabled.

Fifth, Romney pays less of a % of his income in taxes than @ 50% of Americans.

Sixth, if Obama gets the votes of everyone who doesn't pay federal income tax, he will get @ 75% of the vote.

What have I missed?

Steve King: Illegal Immigrants Using Voter Fraud To Take Over America

At a debate last night with Democratic challenger Christie Vilsack, Rep. Steve King (R-IA) dipped his toes into the debate over voter ID laws, telling the audience that such measures must be passed “before we turn this country over to people who are not American citizens.” King, who has described immigrants as dogs and proposed an electrified fence on the Mexican border, claimed that there is “significant voter fraud in this country” and, according to the Des Moines Register, blamed undocumented immigrants for a significant chunk of it. There is no evidence that voter fraud is a problem and significant evidence that voter ID laws serve to disproportionately disenfranchise minority voters.

It's just a paragraph, so here it is:

Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez (R) — who Mitt Romney quoted in a speech on Monday — has joined a growing number of Republicans in backing away from the former Massachusetts governor’s claim that 47 percent of Americans are dependent on government and won’t vote for Republicans anyway. Asked if she was offended by the remarks, “Martinez said New Mexico has many people who are living at the poverty level and their votes count just as much as anyone else.”

In addressing a question regarding proposals for voter identification requirements, King said he has concluded there is “significant voter fraud in this country.” Besides requiring voters to produce a photo identification card, he said steps should be taken to ensure that voting rolls are free of felons, duplicate voters and deceased persons, as well as illegal immigrants.

Voter fraud “is not a gimmick. … It is real,” King added, suggesting that Iowa Secretary of State Matt Schultz is on the right course for proposing measures to insure the integrity of elections.

“We have to stop this before we turn this country over to people who are not American citizens,” King said.

The saddest/funniest part of the "Redistribution" video story, is that this is what the Republicans were holding back. This is what they wanted to keep under wraps until the perfect time. This is what they thought would be as big of a bombshell as the "47%" video.

And in the end, all it is, is "Joe the Plumber"....10 years before "Joe the Plumber" became a thing. An attack that didn't work last time, made even more ineffective by the fact that the comments are 10 years older, rather than comments that have come out SINCE 2008.

And they blew their load now, when it will barely even register as a blip because of Romney's video.

It's even worse, because the recording itself is totally uncontroversial. He wasn't even saying he wanted to "redistribute wealth" (Marxism!). He was talking about redistributing government resources to better serve the community.

I know, this won't stop them from still trying to claim it's evidence of his secret commie nature, but sane people will never fall for it. Only the already deranged will give a shit.

Well, my point was more that even if it was what they're trying to represent it as being, it would still just be a "gotcha" quote that they had tried four years ago. An attack that wound up failing.

MS city considers privatizing public works and utilities

City employees and residents asked the Gautier City Council to reconsider a proposal to privatize the city's public works and utility services during an emotionally charged public hearing Monday night.

The meeting was held to discuss a planned $9.599 million budget the council is scheduled to vote on Sept. 24.

The proposed budget calls for a $680,000 cut in the general fund, which includes an anticipated savings of $360,802 by privatizing the services.

City manager Samantha Abell said, if the budget is approved, the council would carefully consider various companies that would be required to retain city staff. There are 34 public works employees and four in utility services, but three of those would stay with the city even if privatization occurs because the council previously passed a measure to protect those with 20 years or more with the city, she said.

Employees worried

City employee Al Stanton said he'd "earned the right to be here" after his years of service with the city. "You should do whatever you need to do to save people's jobs … people who have been here 15 years or more."

Darlene Brown, a 12-year city employee, said she started working at the city with the plan to retire from there. She expressed concern that her plan would be realized under a private company.

"I would ask that the council think about it before privatizing," said resident Casey Vaughan. Once the decision is made, he said, "you have no control over those employees."

Abell said if the proposed plan is approved, employees would continue working for the city until Dec. 1. She said benefits of going with a private firm include step increases in pay, training for employees and retaining city employees.

"A private company can just do it for less," Abell said, though added that city staff didn't know how much a contract with such a company would be.

Somehow I think privatization wouldn't end well.

Many Texans Bereaved Over 'Dead' Voter Purge

WTF.

Quite a few Texas voters are seeing dead people in the mirror these days when they go to brush their teeth in the morning.

In Houston, high school nurse Terry Collins got a letter informing her that after 34 years of voting she was off the Harris County rolls. Sorry.

"Friday of last week, I got a letter saying that my voting registration would be revoked because I'm deceased, I'm dead. I was like, 'Oh, no I'm not!' " Collins says.

In order to stay on the rolls, the 52-year-old nurse had to call and inform the registrar of her status among the living. She tried, but it didn't go so well.

"When I tried to call I was on hold for an hour, never got anyone," she says. "I called three days in a row and was on hold for an hour or more."

Collins, who is black, says she noticed that in Houston, quite a few of those who got the letters seemed to be older and black.

"There's one lady here. She's 52. She's African-American. Her dad is 80. They both got a letter saying they're dead," she says.

Like all states, Texas regularly purges its rolls of voters who've died. Normally, this is a low-key process where the state passes along to the counties a small list of dead voters as they become available. But this massive mailing two months before the election is new.

Rich Parsons, a spokesman for the Texas secretary of state, says the state is not targeting anyone but dead voters.

Suuure, you're not Mr. Parsons. You just keep telling yourself that.

For many years Philly would remove people who had a similar names. For example: John Smith. Anyone having that name would be removed from the voter rolls. I still remember going to election court to have a person registered so that they could vote in a general election. They had to prove they were not dead.

Sully raises a good point:

They couldn't even be convinced to take care of themselves, as long as they can get government handouts. Romney thinks that applies to almost one in two Americans. Or to put it bluntly: the real crime of 47 percent of Americans is their laziness - and then they have the gall to whine about the one percent. He is using the key argument of racists against African-Americans through the ages against 47 percent of the country. That's the equivalent of calling a lot of old white people the n-word.

Haha. I love The Onion:

Romney Campaign Sends In Champion Of The Poor Paul Ryan For Damage Control

Following the widespread controversy over Mitt Romney’s recently leaked comments criticizing Americans who depend on the government, Republican vice presidential candidate and widely beloved champion of the poor Paul Ryan was quickly called in Tuesday to bolster the Romney campaign.

“We’ve obviously been set back a bit, but thankfully we have the perfect guy to the right the ship and win over the nation’s lower class,” said campaign manager Matt Rhoades, adding that Ryan was the first person he thought to call when the video of Romney’s candid discussions with ultra-rich donors emerged yesterday. “Even if we take a hit among lower-income voters in the polls for a day or two, Congressman Ryan will, amazingly enough, win them back to our side, just like he always does.”

“I’ve never seen anything quite like it,” Rhoades continued. “Poor people just love him.”

According to sources, Romney’s advisers have dispatched the modern-day Robin Hood to speak to voters in the most economically downtrodden regions of the country, where thousands of working-class Americans are already lining up outside the venues of Ryan’s upcoming rallies to don T-shirts and wave handmade signs in support of the selfless guardian of the poverty-stricken.

It's pretty clear that it is affecting the Senate races. Around the time of the RNC, RealClearPolitics Senate predictions had it around 55-45 in favor of the Republicans. Right now, if you award all toss-up states to the person currently leading in their poll average, it's 51-49. And some of those seats that they give to Republicans look like they're trending towards the Dems (especially Kaine in Virginia).

The more he steps in it, the worse it will get for Republicans running everywhere.

Romney Apologizes to Nation's 150 million starving, filthy beggars

“First and foremost, I would like to offer a heartfelt apology to all the whores, junkies, bums, and grime-covered derelicts out there who make up nearly half our nation,” a visibly contrite and solemn Romney said outside a campaign stop at a local high school. “Let me assure you that I in no way meant to offend any of the putrid-smelling, barefoot masses out there. My campaign is not about dividing this nation, but about bringing all sides together—the rich, elegant members of the upper class, as well as the 47 percent who are covered in flies and eat directly from back-alley dumpsters.”
