Shock: Pat Robertson Is Not a Young Earth Creationist

That sound you hear is my jaw hitting the floor, as religious right crocodile Pat Robertson actually says that dinosaurs existed before the Bible — and that the Earth is older than 6,000 years. It’s surprising (to say the least!) to hear one of America’s leading voices of fundamentalist Christianity breaking ranks with the determinedly ignorant literalists.

Right Wing Watch points out, however, that Robertson’s Christian Broadcasting Network continues to sell books promoting young Earth creationism to the rubes.

I was especially struck by Robertson's conclusion to the woman who asked him the original question about dinosaurs:

"If you go against revealed science, you are going to lose your children."

This is very significant but it's hard to tell what is really going on with it. Has Pat finally had a twinge of conscience about what he must know is a ridiculous fraud?
Has he realized that creationism, especially the insane young Earth variety, is a losing game in the twenty-first century?
The latter would be good news, since it would inspire other evangelists to jump on the bandwagon and tell the quacks at ICR to bug off.

Every once in awhile there's a reminder that Pat is from an earlier iteration of Christian fundamentalism, where creationism wasn't so set-in-stone as Young Earth, Bible "literal." Thus doesn't always sync with the current completely anti-science version now in distribution.

There are quite a few of those old school evangelists still around. They may be starting to realize that the fire-breathing creation quacks are a serious danger in the long term. A cynic might suggest that they are also getting too much of the action as well.

Judge Blocks Louisiana School Voucher Implementation In Parish

A federal judge on Monday in New Orleans halted the implementation of Louisiana's school voucher system in one of the state's parishes.

The New Orleans Times-Picayune reported that U.S. District Court Judge Ivan L.R. Lemelle ruled that the state legislature's expansion of the voucher system could not be implemented in Tangipahoa Parish due to decades-old desegregation orders. Such orders exist in nearly half of the state's parishes. According to Lemelle, the voucher program would interfere with prior court orders on constructing new schools, improving existing facilities, and maintaining magnet facilities.

Louisiana's voucher system has come under recent fire for questionable standards and the use of public funds in schools that teach creationism. Louisiana Superintendent of Education John White said Lemelle's ruling would be appealed. Monday's ruling will have no effect on another lawsuit challenging the voucher system, put forth by Louisiana school boards and teachers' associations, that will be decided on Wednesday.

Large Hadron Collider May Have Produced New Matter

The Large Hadron Collider, the world’s largest and most powerful particle accelerator and the “Big Bang machine” that was used to discover what appears to be the long-sought Higgs boson particle (as announced July 4), may have another surprise up its sleeve this year: The LHC looks to have produced a new type of matter, according to a new analysis of particle collision data by scientists at the LHC’s Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) collaboration, including researchers at MIT and Rice University.

The new type of matter, which has yet to be verified, is theorized to be one of two possible forms: Either “color-glass condensate” — a flattened nucleus transformed into a “wall” of gluons, which are smaller binding subatomic particles, or it could be “quark-gluon plasma,” a dense, soup or liquid-like collection of individual particles.

“The color-glass condensate is one of the two most prominent possible explanations for the effect we have seen, with the other being the creation of a dense ‘liquid’ system that expands and leads to the observed correlations,” wrote Gunther Roland, an MIT physicist who led the analysis of the collisions and is a co-author on a paper on the results, due to be published in an upcoming issue of the journal Physical Review B, in an email to TPM.

“Formation of a quark gluon plasma in the much smaller [proton-lead collisions] system would be considered rather surprising,” Roland wrote to TPM. “It only exists at extremely high temperature (several trillion degrees Kelvin).”

Either of these strange types of matter would have been around at the start of the Universe, shortly after the Big Bang (hence the Large Hadron Collider particle accelerator’s nickname). The color glass composite is also considered to be a precusor to the quark gluon plasma.

For about two years I have been including imprecatory prayers in our church services and Bible studies at Holy Grounds Coffee House. Imprecatory prayers are Old Testament prayers for the defeat and destruction of the enemies of God and his people. A New Testament variation on these prayers is to ask God to save the people but destroy the institutions. Our prayers, part of our seven year campaign to re-Christianize the City of Springfield, have included an appeal to God to destroy the works of Satan in this city. We have specifically included the strip clubs in these prayers.

Yesterday the three story Scores strip club on Worthington Street was completely obliterated in a gas explosion, right down to the ground. See Link

I believe this was the hand of God at work in answer to our prayers...

Actually it is now known that a gas company worker accidentally punched a hole in the gas line by hitting it with a metal probe, it was human error. But I suppose Scott will just claim that God made him do it...

"Old Earth" Creationism (OEC) has existed side by side with YEC for quite a while here in American Fundamentalism.

That's one reason why I moved on to bringing up the literal Adam and Eve story as the hallmark of whether someone accepts science today, and not the age of the Earth as the best discriminator.

Prudence, one would think, if not generosity of spirit, should impel Democrats to be magnanimous in victory. Romney did receive about 48 percent of the vote. A little modesty among the winners would seem to be in order.

Instead, the gloating has been extravagant. No, I don't think so. My take on Benghazi isn't inflammatory. At worst, my thought is that Obama declined to send a rescue team from Sicily because he reasonably feared doing so would trigger significant blowback in Libya. I don't fully agree with that call, but if that's what happened it was his call to make. I don't regard a judgement call as a major outrage.

She isn't very convincing. In addition to the "states rights" lie, there is additional fail:

1) The talking point about the vote tally on the 1964 Civil Rights Act is way past its sell-by date. Completely irrelevant.

2) Since the RW "right to life" begins at conception and ends at birth, this need not be taken seriously either.

3) Mona denies that "judicial restraint" means "no rights for women, gays, or nonwhites". What else could it possibly mean in contemporary US politics? With high probability, we'll shortly see several conservative Supreme Court Justices rule against the Voting Rights Act.

The past year has not been kind to the most potent symbols of climate change hysteria. Consider the polar bears. Among the most moving images of the warmists' warnings was the solitary polar bear, supposedly marooned on an ice floe. The image became iconic after it was published in Science Magazine. Among the most memorable moments in Al Gore's film, "An Inconvenient Truth," was an animated clip depicting struggling polar bears.

You don't hear stories, as you do with dolphins, of polar bears rescuing drowning humans. But polar bears, especially cubs, have a different claim on our sympathy -- they're adorable. We shudder to see winsome, furry mammals drifting off to sea on ice floes -- all because we couldn't part with our SUVs. A children's book prepared by the United Nations put it just that way.

Well, according to WattsUpWithThat.com, the picture of that "stranded" polar bear has been lampooned as "ursus bogus." Experts on those creatures always found the warmists' interpretation of that photo odd, since polar bears can swim for hundreds of miles at a time. The longest recorded polar bear swim, according to National Geographic, was 426 miles straight (though National Geographic is all in on climate change). Since polar bears swim for a living, they're probably pretty good at gauging where land and ice floes are.

Maybe we're sore winners because we still have to deal with stupid conservatives.

The argument is in two parts. The first claims that the number of total bears have increased since the minimum and the second is that certain populations of bears have also increased even in the 'environmentalists' surveys.

What they don't admit is that the starting date for their comparison is the '50s where over-hunting almost wiped the population out. Since then, and due to making hunting illegal, the population had largely recovered until the late '90s when it again started to drop. They compare the minimum numbers when hunting was legal to the current numbers while ignoring the more recent peak and later drop in numbers.

They also point out that several of the populations have increased in more recent times without mentioning that most populations have dropped enough to not only counteract the isolated increases but over shadow them dramatically.

On the food front the turkey rice soup came out very nicely. Veggies the right consistency, a really nice and smoky tasting stock from the turkey carcass, nice little cubes of smoked turkey breast meat, and a mix of previously steamed brown and white rice added for some extra body. And then I tossed in a cup of roasted corn as well for extra color.

His Imperial Crankiness just demanded his share of the turkey without all the added trimmings.

To be fair she was already upset about other comments that were not explicit enough in their condemnation of Hamas. Other people in the thread were baffled because they thought no such specifics were needed, it was assumed to be obvious. Hopefully she comes back once she has had some time away to reflect.

Yeah...the conclusion is...dung:

By allowing that evolution is a theory, scientists would hand fundamentalists the fig leaf they need to insist, at least among themselves, that the majestic words of the first chapter of Genesis are literal, not metaphorical, truths. They in return should make no objection to the teaching of evolution in science classes as a theory, which indeed it is.

Problematic because (1) evolution being a theory has never had this kind of diplomatic effect in the past and (2) because "literalists" are dogmatists who don't even read the Bible, and only selectively appropriate bits as literal, and have no interest in conceding their position even to more moderate creationists.

The common usage of theory is a bastardization of hypothesis. Just as they assemble, parade around, and finally burn their straw man evolutionary ladder, while ignoring the complex lattice of common descent, they portray theory as simple speculation, barely above a guess and well below law on the ladder of epistemology instead of the complex amalgam of hypothesis, sub-theories and laws that make up the theory of evolution.

As bizarre as it sounds, those who minister to people in occult bondage say it's more common than you think.

For nearly two decades, Contessa Adams felt as though she had no power against the demonic violators of her body. She felt trapped in secrecy and shame and knew that the demons tormenting her wanted things to stay that way.

These spiritual rapists, as Adams describes them in her book, Consequences, often prey on people by performing sexual acts through nightmares and erotic dreams. Some people become so dependent upon these demonic experiences that they actually look forward to them.

"Anybody that has been attacked by them will tell you ... they're worried [that] they could not find that pleasure with mortal people," says Adams, who claims she was once possessed by sexual demons.

The two most identifiable sexual demons are the incubus, which is a male sexual demon that traditionally assaults women, and the succubus, which is a female sexual demon that assaults men. Sometimes they also lure people into homosexual behavior.

Adams notes that one evangelist, whose name she would not divulge, was so troubled by the sexual pleasure the succubus gave her that she even contemplated suicide.

Adams says the succubus spirit that used to attack her confused her so much that she contemplated becoming a lesbian.

"Unless you're strong enough to rebuke it, they'll keep coming back," she says. "You must speak the Word of God, knowing you have power in the name of Jesus."

I wouldn't disagree. Because of that tendency of theirs I define a fact as a datum, one of the observations or measurements taken when testing a hypothesis rather than as a code word for proved theory, which never happens anyway.
