25 lawhawk  Tue, Jan 8, 2013 11:02:59am

The GOP didn’t just blow it. They keep on blowing it.

The Senate passed a single bill containing the NFIP, FEMA and reconstruction aid. $60b and change.*

The House? They had to bifurcate it, and then turned it into three separate bills because the House GOP couldn’t get enough GOP votes to approve even the NFIP tab. The Senate now has a $51b version, and the House has two bills to cover the $51b balance.

The only aid passed so far is the $9.7b NFIP re-funding package - that helps with those with flood damage and prepares the NFIP for the next inevitable flood disaster. That couldn’t even get full support from the GOP including Rep. Palazzo (above) who demanded appropriations for the NFIP when his own district was affected, but couldn’t care less about those in need of compensation now - at a time when the temps are at or below freezing overnight and are now waiting 70 days for the full reconstruction package to be approved.

You want righteous indignation? Here’s righteous indignation. The GOP has now blocked reconstruction aid from flowing to NY/NJ longer than it took for prior Congresses to act on any number of prior natural disasters - combined (and that includes the initial $60b in aid for Katrina that passed within two weeks of the disaster).

The House spent three weeks sitting on legislation and did nothing. The last minute scramble was wholly avoidable - had they passed the damn thing at the outset.

Instead, the delay harms the rebuilding efforts, causes local municipalities to borrow on credit to cover costs until reimbursed by the feds, and means that some projects can’t go forward until the money is actually available. That’s no way to do business, but that’s the GOP for you. Businesses can’t rebuild because the municipalities can’t get infrastructure rebuilt. Homes can’t get rebuilt for the same reason. That’s irresponsible. It’s wrong.

And it isn’t satire. That’s the facts.

*About that “change” and the allegations of pork. Take a good hard look for pork in the current version that the House is considering - and the version that it could have considered last year. Of the entire $60b, there was only $400m that anyone could identify as pork, and most of that amount was also disaster aid - for prior natural disasters in places like AK - where the fisheries are in real bad shape (and where the AK GOP delegation sought $150m for assistance).

This wasn’t about pork or fiscal responsibility. It’s about screwing the victims of one of the worst natural disasters to hit the country because of politics and the optics of recognizing that the debt ceiling talk is all so much nonsense and offsetting spending cuts ignore that this is what the same Congress previously agreed to spend.

Alex Jones warns he may be ‘killed by crackheads’ on Bloomberg’s payroll

In a lengthy, paranoid plea published to YouTube hours after appearing on CNN with Piers Morgan, conspiracy talk host Alex Jones insisted he was legitimately concerned that he and his team may be “killed by crackheads” working for Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Jones apparently filmed the video in his hotel room immediately after leaving CNN’s studios — or rather, as Jones described, being escorted out by security.

Jones did not take that well. “See, the way this will work is, ‘Oh, see they’re here protesting the gun grabs,’” he said. “‘Oh, see, some crack dealers shot them.’ And if you don’t know that Bloomberg is total mafia, you’re not living in reality.”

He added that he’d positively identified several undercover police officers throughout the day and even saw one man who was armed. “If something happens to us, we’re killed by crackheads, it was the NYPD or the mafia they hired, period,” Jones said.

And people take this fucking nutcase seriously?

“I have not forgotten about the Benghazi debacle and still have many questions about what transpired before, during and after the attack on our consulate,” Graham told Fox News. “In that regard, I do not believe we should confirm anyone as director of the CIA until our questions are answered.”

Sen. Toomey, McConnell, et al. “Without major change we are on the road to becoming Greece”.

That’s the meme of the day from the GOP.

Want to get spending under control? Military spending should return to pre 2001 levels as percentage of expenditures. We’d still be spending more than everyone else, but it would at least be a manageable number. Our unemployment rates aren’t anywhere near what is seen in Greece, and our credit ratings are under threat not because we’re going to default, but because the GOP is holding the debt ceiling hostage to making cuts on budgets they’d already agreed to previously.

And if you want to claim that military spending = jobs, then the rejoinder is to create jobs in infrastructure industries to rebuild our crumbling infrastructure for a 21st century environment, up to and including dealing with any variety of natural disasters.

A gyro is some kind of foreign top that never did work.

Best Gyros and Pizzas are not in Italy or Greece but in NYC.

That’s Sicilian pizza. You really do eat the good stuff (northwards of Livorno) with a knife and fork.

Our town’s Irish pub makes its fish ‘n chips dredged in cornmeal.

103 HappyWarrior  Tue, Jan 8, 2013 11:53:28am

You know you’ve found a good Irish pub when they have Murphy’s on tap as well.

It’s the water for the pizza dough. I should add the best bagels and bialys are not in Eastern Europe or Israel but New York, also. I know of LA kitchens that import their water from New York to make pizzas and bagels.

Sure can in Pittsburgh just down the road. And you are right, Youngstown has some good spots. During lent my dad and his wife go to a church in Youngstown that makes great pirohy. There is another place in Warren that he used to go to when he worked in Girard that he said was real good.

Yeah I knew Youngstown has a lot of Polish-Americans, Slovaks, etc. Most of my family ended up near or in Pittsburgh but some cousins of my grandfather ended up in Youngstown.

Odd. Can’t think of anything that would make NYC water that special. Most of it does run through 80+ miles of aqueduct, but otherwise it’s pretty much eastern NY/PA water from the Catskills/Poconos.

Perhaps it’s a placebo effect. It’s from or near NYC so it must be special. Hungry now though for some good pizza.

NYC holds periodic taste tests against expensive bottled water, always scores very high. They publicize the results and methodology.

Try pizza in Florida with their water. Then try NY pizza. Yes, major, major difference. One of my co-worker’s old roommates owns a small pizzeria chain in Florida, and they have the dough made in NY and shipped down before they finish making the pizza.

I don’t think there’s anything special about our water. It’s just that water in a lot of other places is just that much worse (sulfur being a key problem).

It took six months of tinkering with a water-filtration system before a team of entrepreneurs in Florida believed they had successfully recreated New York City’s distinctive tap water.

Howard Sackel, an engineer from New Jersey, was part of the team that developed the so-called “Brooklynizing” technology used by Original Brooklyn Water Bagel Co. in Delray Beach, Fla. “We were looking to replicate a New York bagel, which is widely known as the best in the world,” he said in an interview. “Most bakers will tell you that what gives New York bagels its characteristics is the water.”

Sackel, who is also a shareholder in the bagel shop, described a discovery process that took the water replication team to several rented bakeries where the formula was tested and refined.
