Remember when Sen. Marco Rubio’s name was pushed out there as an example of a “moderate” Republican? Not a Tea Party loon or far right social conservative?

Well, here’s Rubio on Fox News parroting pro-gun propaganda and invoking one of the most insidious right wing memes, the insinuation that President Obama is an “other” — a person who doesn’t truly understand the US Constitution, or American values.

It’s about one short step away from Birtherism, and even closer to racism. And it’s absolutely mainstream bigoted Republican politics; this lunatic insinuation was a very large part of Mitt Romney’s campaign rhetoric. The right wing base really responds to the idea that our first black president is actually a foreigner who secretly hates America.

The thinking (I dare not call it logic) is this: if you are convinced that Obama is out to repeal the 2nd Amendment and confiscate our guns, then what he has done is merely the first step in his strategy. (Remember that Wayne LaPierre has already warned us about this)

If you are a sane and normal person, then they are merely sane and normal steps to counter insane and abnormal conditions that the NRA has helped to create.

Bullshit. An assault weapon is a high capacity, semi-automatic or automatic firearm, designed to be fired easily while on the move.

To that I say, PBO seems to have defined it:

Congress should restore a ban on military-style assault weapons, and a 10-round limit for magazines. (Applause.) I’ve just spent the last few hours reviewing the proposed legislation in Illinois regarding guns.

I printed and marked-up the most comprehensive of these: IL SB0042. At least I think it is the most comprehensive. I can’t stand to do anymore tonite.

Mostly because I don’t see much need. Because nothing is banned. There is a newly authorized Registration system for Semi-Auto “Assault” weapons, .50 Calibur Rifles and their accoutrements, and Large (Over-10 rounds) capacity projectile feeding devices.

The State Police are given a limited amount of time to get the system up and running. I assume the Computer Software has already been chosen and is just waiting for contract to be signed. Even so, I don’t see it getting done in the time provided, IF the legislation is passed reasonably intact. I could be wrong.

So, Illinois is not going to go do-to-door for anyone’s guns in the near future.

There is one other piece of legislation that was put forth and is in the Rules Committee that I found interesting.. A technical change that UNDERLINES a word. It took me a few minutes to register the change.

I woke-up to more BS on my fb from the permanently paranoid. This one, I cringe to repost, made me sick. I just can’t believe this is out there.

Yet, there it is.

A Benbrook man told Fort Worth police Tuesday he may have shot a 62-year-old woman with a stray .50 caliber bullet at Texas Motor Speedway over the weekend.

Jill King Moss said the bullet crashed through her RV, hit her arm and then ended up lodged in the wall on Sunday.

Kennith Jaramillo, 49, told detectives the bullet may have come from his weapon. He said he was target shooting Sunday about five miles away near a rifle range from about 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., police said.

Jaramillo told police he came forward after a friend told him about a news report on the shooting.

The bullet fractured Moss’ arm in four places. She was recovering at Harris Methodist Hospital in Fort Worth on Sunday.

Police confiscated Jaramillo’s rifle to conduct ballistics tests to see if the weapon matches the recovered bullet.

Jaramillo could face charges in connection with the shooting if police the stray bullet came from his rifle, police said.

Sadly, I don’t know how that turned out. The only other news link I could find was this one:

He handed the rifle over to police, but parts of the gun needed to be replaced — causing a delay in the test results.

The case against Jaramillo will probably be forwarded to a Denton County grand jury, which will decide whether to indict him. He could be charged with felony deadly conduct.

This is the logic of pretty much the entire GOP platform for the last 5 years. Obama is a communist, an internationalist, and a Muslim. To the extent that he turns out to be not those things, than his otherwise moderate acts are couched as the thin edge of the wedge towards those ends.

Obviously there is no way to debate suck an approach other than to ignore it, or point out that it is bat shit insane.

The acts speak for themselves.

Obama is a progressive leader, a Christian with liberal democratic leanings, a strong belief in the separation of church and state, a belief that the constitution is a living document (said belief grounded in the fact that he is an Ivy League trained constitutional law prof), that believes in a solid welfare state including a single payer health care system and that is committed to the success of the United States.

But reality does not make for a good angry mob, and as the GOP dwindles to not much more than its base, the mob is all they have.

Same thing applies to clips/magazines. Of course, the workaround is the ammo-holding device (same language adopted by Congress and many state legislatures).

Some countries have had no problems defining assault weapons - Australia for one.

Other ways for addressing assault weapons - if you want to own any version of a long barreled weapon currently in use by the US Armed Forces, that’s an assault weapon (distilling the President’s quip about how weapons for a theater of war shouldn’t be present or available in a movie theater).

Still, the AWB issue is a sideshow when the indisputable fact is that nearly half of all homicides are the result of handgun usage. You’re only addressing a small percentage of crime in the AWB - though to be fair, it does address many of the high profile mass shooting incidents.

The key to reducing prevalence of weapons falling into the wrong hands is universal background checks, requiring periodic licensing renewals, addressing the mental health aspects, and securing weapons (possible liability to owners?).

It would be a good time to take 5% of the $ that is currently scheduled to be spent on weapons within the US federal budget and suggest it go instead specifically to provision of mental health services across America. I dont know how big that budget is but I suspect that would help a lot of sick people.

I live in Canada. Thanks. You do have the best available healthcare in the US, particulary for those people able to access it. I don’t think any uninsured American would talk much about how fabulous your system is.

Yes we have long waits for certain things and I am actually in favour of privatizing many elements of the Canadian system. I am fortunate enough to have sought US care when I did not want to risk waiting in Canadian lines. I am currently wating a few months for an MRI for a non urgent matter. It is frustrating. Our system has many issues.

But a fabulous health care system is only fabulous if you can access it through affordable means. So in the US some believe the system is awesome and for others it is perhaps the greatest failing of a great country.

Let me guess….works for you huh?

I suspect that what motivates Marco Rubio’s descent into the gutter is that he’s considering a run for the presidency, or vice-presidency, in 2016.
