Marco Rubio on Fox: Obama Not ‘Truly Committed’ to the 2nd Amendment

Pumping out bigoted insinuations to the Fox News mob
Wingnuts • Views: 25,019

Remember when Sen. Marco Rubio’s name was pushed out there as an example of a “moderate” Republican? Not a Tea Party loon or far right social conservative?

Well, here’s Rubio on Fox News parroting pro-gun propaganda and invoking one of the most insidious right wing memes, the insinuation that President Obama is an “other” — a person who doesn’t truly understand the US Constitution, or American values.

It’s about one short step away from Birtherism, and even closer to racism. And it’s absolutely mainstream bigoted Republican politics; this lunatic insinuation was a very large part of Mitt Romney’s campaign rhetoric. The right wing base really responds to the idea that our first black president is actually a foreigner who secretly hates America.

And Marco Rubio has never met a load of bullshit he hasn’t liked to peddle. Really, I am sick of hearing about how this guy is a “new voice” for the Republicans. He’s no different than the others and arguably just as bad and worse.

Just posted downstairs, but I will carry it over here:

The thinking (I dare not call it logic) is this: if you are convinced that Obama is out to repeal the 2nd Amendment and confiscate our guns, then what he has done is merely the first step in his strategy. (Remember that Wayne LaPierre has already warned us about this)

If you are a sane and normal person, then they are merely sane and normal steps to counter insane and abnormal conditions that the NRA has helped to create.

Marco Rubio is just another RWNJ. They tried to make him a moderate, then he opened his mouth.

Ironic, since the birther morons don’t think Rubio is a citizen either.

We’re pretty much at the point where the only good Republican is a Republican who is out of office.

The party is essentially toxic at this point in time.

That “assault weapon not really a military weapon” argument is beginning to get as tired as the “evolution is only a theory” line.

7 HappyWarrior  Thu, Jan 17, 2013 11:42:51am

Rubio had no problem supporting Mitt Romney for president. A man who actually implemented gun control measures as governor but Obama’s the one “not committed to the 2nd amendment.” Save it Marco.

Well then, we’ll just have to ban everything. I grow tired of the NRA.

They freak out about a bunch of tiny steps (Obama’s executive actions) in the right direction that taken together amount to perhaps 10% of what needs to be done. To hell with the NRA.

Bullshit. An assault weapon is a high capacity, semi-automatic or automatic firearm, designed to be fired easily while on the move.

Anyone who can’t recognize and admit that is full of shit and should be excluded from the conversation.

re: #8 kirkspencer

To that I say, PBO seems to have defined it:

Congress should restore a ban on military-style assault weapons, and a 10-round limit for magazines. (Applause.) The type of assault rifle used in Aurora, for example, when paired with high-capacity magazines, has one purpose — to pump out as many bullets as possible, as quickly as possible; to do as much damage, using bullets often designed to inflict maximum damage.

And that’s what allowed the gunman in Aurora to shoot 70 people — 70 people — killing 12 in a matter of minutes. Weapons designed for the theater of war have no place in a movie theater. A majority of Americans agree with us on this.

repost from the overnight:

I’ve just spent the last few hours reviewing the proposed legislation in Illinois regarding guns.

I printed and marked-up the most comprehensive of these: IL SB0042. At least I think it is the most comprehensive. I can’t stand to do anymore tonite.

Mostly because I don’t see much need. Because nothing is banned. There is a newly authorized Registration system for Semi-Auto “Assault” weapons, .50 Calibur Rifles and their accoutrements, and Large (Over-10 rounds) capacity projectile feeding devices.

The State Police are given a limited amount of time to get the system up and running. I assume the Computer Software has already been chosen and is just waiting for contract to be signed. Even so, I don’t see it getting done in the time provided, IF the legislation is passed reasonably intact. I could be wrong.

So, Illinois is not going to go do-to-door for anyone’s guns in the near future.

There is one other piece of legislation that was put forth and is in the Rules Committee that I found interesting.. A technical change that UNDERLINES a word. It took me a few minutes to register the change.

I woke-up to more BS on my fb from the permanently paranoid. This one, I cringe to repost, made me sick. I just can’t believe this is out there.

Yet, there it is.

re: #9 jaunte

But we definitely can’t ban .50 cal sniper rifles.

From 2008:

A Benbrook man told Fort Worth police Tuesday he may have shot a 62-year-old woman with a stray .50 caliber bullet at Texas Motor Speedway over the weekend.

Jill King Moss said the bullet crashed through her RV, hit her arm and then ended up lodged in the wall on Sunday.

Kennith Jaramillo, 49, told detectives the bullet may have come from his weapon. He said he was target shooting Sunday about five miles away near a rifle range from about 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., police said.

Jaramillo told police he came forward after a friend told him about a news report on the shooting.

The bullet fractured Moss’ arm in four places. She was recovering at Harris Methodist Hospital in Fort Worth on Sunday.

Police confiscated Jaramillo’s rifle to conduct ballistics tests to see if the weapon matches the recovered bullet.

Jaramillo could face charges in connection with the shooting if police the stray bullet came from his rifle, police said.

Sadly, I don’t know how that turned out. The only other news link I could find was this one:
[Link: crimeblog.dallasnews.com…]

He handed the rifle over to police, but parts of the gun needed to be replaced — causing a delay in the test results.

The case against Jaramillo will probably be forwarded to a Denton County grand jury, which will decide whether to indict him. He could be charged with felony deadly conduct.

Yeah, totally doesn’t sound fishy or anything.

This is the logic of pretty much the entire GOP platform for the last 5 years. Obama is a communist, an internationalist, and a Muslim. To the extent that he turns out to be not those things, than his otherwise moderate acts are couched as the thin edge of the wedge towards those ends.

Obviously there is no way to debate suck an approach other than to ignore it, or point out that it is bat shit insane.

The acts speak for themselves.

Obama is a progressive leader, a Christian with liberal democratic leanings, a strong belief in the separation of church and state, a belief that the constitution is a living document (said belief grounded in the fact that he is an Ivy League trained constitutional law prof), that believes in a solid welfare state including a single payer health care system and that is committed to the success of the United States.

But reality does not make for a good angry mob, and as the GOP dwindles to not much more than its base, the mob is all they have.

re: #35 Charles Johnson

Same thing applies to clips/magazines. Of course, the workaround is the ammo-holding device (same language adopted by Congress and many state legislatures).

Some countries have had no problems defining assault weapons - Australia for one.

Other ways for addressing assault weapons - if you want to own any version of a long barreled weapon currently in use by the US Armed Forces, that’s an assault weapon (distilling the President’s quip about how weapons for a theater of war shouldn’t be present or available in a movie theater).

Still, the AWB issue is a sideshow when the indisputable fact is that nearly half of all homicides are the result of handgun usage. You’re only addressing a small percentage of crime in the AWB - though to be fair, it does address many of the high profile mass shooting incidents.

The key to reducing prevalence of weapons falling into the wrong hands is universal background checks, requiring periodic licensing renewals, addressing the mental health aspects, and securing weapons (possible liability to owners?).

It would be a good time to take 5% of the $ that is currently scheduled to be spent on weapons within the US federal budget and suggest it go instead specifically to provision of mental health services across America. I dont know how big that budget is but I suspect that would help a lot of sick people.

Now, President H.W Bush, broccoli is good for you. I’m surprised his vegetable to hate was broccoli. I mean broccoli isn’t as good as potatoes but there are other vegetables much more worthy of disgust. Like Lima beans.

Apparently human taste has variations from person to person that can account for otherwise inexplicable food dislikes (e.g., the taste HW Bush gets from broccoli may not be the same taste that I get from broccoli).

I have a friend who loathes cucumbers. They seem harmless to me.

Not really off topic:

Study: Texas schools get D in Bible class

Most Texas school districts that teach Bible courses as a separate elective have failed to follow state guidelines, a study by religious freedom advocates said.

A bill passed in 2007 allows school districts to teach elective courses on the Bible as long as they are religiously neutral and educate students on the Bible’s historical and cultural influence.

A study authored for the Texas Freedom Network by Mark Chancey, a professor of religious studies at Southern Methodist University, found that of the 57 school districts and three charter schools that taught the course, only 11 could be considered “most successful,” which was defined as largely constitutional and academically rigorous, The Austin (Texas) American-Statesman reported Thursday.

The Belton Independent School Distinct, about 60 miles north of Austin, was among the 20 districts and one charter school highlighted in the study as “most problematic.”

Course materials in the district treated as fact the word of God and said “giving God his rightful place in the national life of this country has provided a rich heritage for all its citizens.”

Here’s the TFN summary:

New TFNEF Report: Texas Public School Bible Classes Teach Races Come from Noah’s Sons, Biblical Literalism, 6000-year-old Earth

[…] Examples from Texas public schools:

Instructional material in two school districts teach that racial diversity today can be traced back to Noah’s sons, a long-discredited claim that has been a foundational component of some forms of racism.

Religious bias is common, with most courses taught from a Protestant — often a conservative Protestant — perspective. One course, for example, assumes Christians will at some point be “raptured.” Materials include a Venn diagram showing the pros and cons of theories that posit the rapture before the returning Jesus’ 1,000-year reign and those that place it afterward. In many courses, the perspectives of Roman Catholics, Orthodox Christians and Jews are often left out.

Anti-Jewish bias — intentional or not — is not uncommon. Some courses even portray Judaism as a flawed and incomplete religion that has been replaced by Christianity.

Many courses suggest or openly claim that the Bible is literally true. “The Bible is the written word of God,” students are told in one PowerPoint presentation. Some courses go so far as to suggest that the Bible can be used to verify events in history. One district, for example, teaches students that the Bible’s historical claims are largely beyond question by listing biblical events side by side with historical developments from around the globe.

Course materials in numerous classes are designed to evangelize rather than provide an objective study of the Bible’s influence. A book in one district makes its purpose clear in the preface: “May this study be of value to you. May you fully come to believe that ‘Jesus is the Christ, the son of God.’ And may you have ‘life in His name.’”

A number of courses teach students that the Bible proves Earth is just 6,000 years old.

Students are taught that the United States is a Christian nation founded on the Christian biblical principles taught in their classrooms.

Academic rigor is so poor that many courses rely mostly on memorization of Bible verses and factoids from Bible stories rather than teaching students how to analyze what they are studying. One district relies heavily on Bible cartoons from Hanna-Barbera for its high school class. Students in another district spend two days watching what lesson plans describe a “the historic documentary Ancient Aliens,” which presents “a new interpretation of angelic beings described as extraterrestrials.”

How could such courses have gone so wrong? […]

I live in Canada. Thanks. You do have the best available healthcare in the US, particulary for those people able to access it. I don’t think any uninsured American would talk much about how fabulous your system is.

Yes we have long waits for certain things and I am actually in favour of privatizing many elements of the Canadian system. I am fortunate enough to have sought US care when I did not want to risk waiting in Canadian lines. I am currently wating a few months for an MRI for a non urgent matter. It is frustrating. Our system has many issues.

But a fabulous health care system is only fabulous if you can access it through affordable means. So in the US some believe the system is awesome and for others it is perhaps the greatest failing of a great country.

Let me guess….works for you huh?

Continuing on to section 6:

Klein ISD’s PowerPoint introductory presentation adopts a similar stance. One slide proclaims, “The Bible is the written word of God. The Bible is one volume which consists of 66 books…. It’s a word selected as a title for all of God’s Words. Scripture is also used to refer to God’s Word…. When the word Scripture is used with a capital ‘S’ it means the sacred writings of God.” Another reads, “The Bible is united in content because there is no contradictions in the writing [sic]. The reason for this is because the Bible is written under God’s direction and inspiration.” Other Klein materials describe “The books of Prophecy” by explaining that “these books are prophetic messages from God to His people about future events. Many of the prophecies have already been fulfilled, but some remain to be fulfilled in the future.” Its comment on what it calls the “books of history” is that “naturally they do not tell everything that happened, but they record the major events and show the results of both following and ignoring God’s law.”

And then some might wonder why I refer to it as Texastan.

[…] Prosper ISD’s “Event Timeline” frames not only the biblical story but all subsequent history into its framework, beginning with Noah’s three sons (Genesis 9:9) and concluding in 2011 with a note on the modern Jewish population of Israel, which figures prominently in some eschatological frameworks. A Prosper ISD timeline on “Revelations” [sic] likewise relates the fate of present-day Israel and the Jewish people with various verses: “Survival of the Jewish nations [sic] is one of the miracles of history and her greatest agony is yet to come. It was sealed in the book of Daniel 12:4-9, opened in Revelation 5:5, 7, 6:19, Matthew 28:21, 23, John 30:7, Revelation 12:12, 10.” The course explains that “the first time the Lord gathered his people back was after the Babylonian captivity. The second time the Lord will gather his people back will be at the end of the age.” Students in this course are taught that they themselves may be living in the last days. A discussion of the seven churches of Revelation 2-3 suggests that “each church represents a period of history” and concludes with “the lukewarm church of the 20th century, today the last period of church history.”

So does my cat.

The problem is that so many of them are convinced that they are morally right and, inasmuch as a lot of them are highly evangelical Christians, see no need to hide their shining truths under a basket…

ah! Morality, again. Those competing for first in line to Heaven concerned about morality.

I live here on Earth, with human laws. I deal in pragmatism, not morality.

Too bad it took a couple hundred years to get affirmed as an individual right.

Well, we need to use the Supreme Court’s interpretation, not yours.

Why can’t we just ignore this man?

He has the Constitution blown up on the wall like Saul the criminal lawyer from “Breaking Bad”.

re: #130 HappyWarrior

Yep pretty much. Same thing with gays. We should ban homosexual acts but any gun regulation is a Stalinist Nazi plot.It must be in the wingnut training manual to be in cognitive dissonance mode 24/7/365.

What if we arm the gays and then threaten to make gay sex illegal?

Yep. Dennis Kucinich heads over to Fox News where I will continue to ignore what he has to say.

John Cena?

No, in this case, Regina rhymes with “vagina”, IIRC.

176 Ming  Thu, Jan 17, 2013 3:28:30pm

I suspect that what motivates Marco Rubio’s descent into the gutter is that he’s considering a run for the presidency, or vice-presidency, in 2016. This is the same behavior we saw with Bobby Jindal: (1) I have a chance to be the GOP nominee in 2016, and (2) I’d better appeal to the GOP base, real quick!

re: #8 kirkspencer

that and the “nobody can define what an assault weapon is, we can’t ban what we can’t define or we’ll wind up banning everything.”

Simple. An assault rifle is a Mac Bolan rifle. Imagine you’re Mac Bolan and you’re going to kill every mafia boss, capo, and consigliere in a hotel. What do you come armed with? An AR-15 definitely comes to mind.
