White House Releases Skeet Shooting Photo, WaPo Fact Checker Still Skeptical

And the right wing blogs are still ranting away about conspiracies
Wingnuts • Views: 35,185

Pro tip: if you want to be taken seriously as a fact checker, maybe you should avoid writing absolutely ridiculous articles like this one: The White House’s Curious Silence About Obama’s Claim of Skeet Shooting.

Yes, Washington Post fact checker Glenn Kessler actually seems to believe this is an important issue, or at least important enough to pander to the right wing crackpots who think the President lies about everything and anything.

Today the White House released a photo to prove that yes, President Obama really has done skeet shooting at Camp David, and how pathetic is it that this is even necessary at all?

Would you believe this still isn’t good enough for Glenn Kessler?

UPDATE, Feb. 2: The White House released this photograph of the president at the Camp David skeet range on Aug. 4, 2010. We are pleased the White House has become more forthcoming about this matter, though it does not quite answer the questions concerning the president’s ‘all the time’ language. What do readers think?

Good grief.

By the way, ace fact checker Glenn Kessler got the date of the photo wrong in his post. The caption at the White House Flickr page:

President Barack Obama shoots clay targets on the range at Camp David, Md., Saturday, Aug. 4, 2012.

Meanwhile, breitbart.com moron John Nolte is still ranting away about “Skeet-Gate.” Yes, really. They’ve made it into a -Gate.

MEDIA FOLLOWS OBAMA’S ORDERS TO MOCK SKEET-GATE SKEPTICS!!!

For example, Obama is attempting to grab more power for The State and criminals by way of gun control laws that infringe on our Second Amendment civil rights. In order to make his case, Obama is attempting to appear reasonable on the issue of guns, and one way he did this was to reassure Americans that he too is a sport shooter, and enjoys skeet shooting at Camp David.

Now, to those familiar with Obama’s record of opposing guns at every turn and lying about almost everything, that struck us as odd.

Today, however, the White House released a photo that purports to show Obama (love that tucked-in shirt) shooting skeet last August. Except… he’s shooting straight ahead, which means that there’s either a barn door somewhere in need of some patching, or Obama is such an awesome skeet shooter, he hits them as they come out of the firing device.

I keed, I keed. There are legitimate reasons that would explain the angle of his gun, but….

Because the photo is odd, some are asking perfectly legitimate questions.

But not the media.

Ladies and gentlemen, the conservative movement in all its sad, batshit insane glory.

Can we call them “Skeeters” now?

UPDATE at 2/2/13 11:58:48 am

After being most severely mocked throughout the Interwebs, Glenn Kessler has updated his post again. Apparently, he’s now satisfied that President Obama was not telling heinous lies.

UPDATE: As one might expect, there is a vast partisan divide on this, with some readers upset that we did not immediately change our ruling because the president released a photo, as we had requested in our original post. We try not to make snap judgements, but readers argued we had moved the goal posts. So we now have a photo, a news report quoting an anonymous that the president participated in a Marine guard competition and a news report quoting Obama that he has practiced with the Secret Service. The issue is settled, and we award the president a Geppetto Checkmark.

A “Gepetto Checkmark” for the president. I’m sure he’ll cherish it always.

There’s no evidence that Obama has any bowel movements while at Camp David. Conclusion: the President may not be completely forthcoming about his regularity outside the White House.

repost from downstairs:

There is a book by a black man about that is pro-gun, it’s called “Black Man With a Gun.” The author talks about the racists roots of gun-control and why is is a 2nd amendment proponent.

He describes the fear induced by the title of his book. Growing-up in Detroit in the 70’s I totally support his thoughts. I understand completely. It’s irrational, but there it is. I had to force myself to face those fears.

Now, we see it on a National Level like we never have before. And it is totally irrational and very few want to face it within themselves.

This was a time in my life when I figured-out how much of society is designed around a “fear of slave revolt.” How much we are conditioned to accept control and justify control over others.

All based on fear of those we oppress rising up against us.

It’s interesting that the paranoid false flag meme was already in existence at the time of the 1976 NRA coup:

Winkler writes that (extremist leader) Carter’s top deputy Neal Knox was even more extreme than him—wanting to roll back all existing gun laws, including bans on machine guns and saying the federal government had killed Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy as “part of a plot to advance gun control.”

The Pinocchio Test

The evidence suggests that until Obama had access to a shooting range as president, he never went skeet shooting. He certainly did not speak like a politician who had once used a firearm.

But it is also curious that the White House refuses to provide any documentary evidence that he actually used the shooting range at Camp David, since he claims he uses it “all the time,” or that a presidential friend has not come forward to confirm the president’s comments.

We live in suspicious times and the president lives in a media fishbowl. That’s the way it is. In the meantime, we do not have enough information to make a ruling one way or the other. We are eager to see a photograph, or hear from someone who saw him at the skeet range, to put this matter to rest.

Hahahaha.
Wish granted.

One of my favorite moments in “To Kill a Mockingbird” is when Atticus puts down the rabid dog with a single shot from a rifle at range. His son, who has apparently always felt his dad was just not “manly” enough, learns in this moment what a true gentleman is. It is NOT that his father is a dead shot that impresses him. It’s that his father feels no need to show it off. It shows him that being a man isn’t about being a loudmouth with a big gun.

I’m calling BS on the photo alleged to be of Obama shooting skeet. I see a number of problems:
(1) He’s shooting too low (unless he’s actually shooting trap, not skeet) (2) He’s holding the shotgun improperly. If he shoots a 12 gauge like that, high and on the tip of his shoulder, it would cripple his shoulder. (3) Shotgun shells are loaded with smokeless powder and don’t produce the smoke shown. Black powder might, but no one loads modern trap load shells with black powder. Also, a blank might produce that amount of visible smoke. (4) The smoke that appears to be coming out of the top of the top barrel through the “porting” is only coming out of one side. The porting on the other side is clearly seen to be producing no smoke. (5) The gun is firing but there is no recoil (“kick”) evident. A 12 gauge trap gun has considerably more recoil than many common hard-kicking high-powered rifles. (6) With this crowd, believe nothing,

From Jim Hoft’s comments:

TOTAL FAKE.. Here’s why.

Cheek pressed against a fired shot gun doesn’t fare well. It’s an idiot who does this or gets a hell of a bruise.

Smoke is photo shopped. If he just pulled the trigger his cheek wouldn’t be fixed on the butt if the gun.
His shoulder would be jammed backwards.

He’s aiming ground level. Unless he’s aiming for the skeet “shooter” he’s not aiming high enough for skeet.

The group endorsed Barack Obama for president in 2008 after announcing that he would be attending a skeet shoot sponsored by them in Colorado. However AHSA head Ray Schoenke stated Obama did not attend the event. Schoenke said AHSA was intended to bridge the gap between urban liberals and rural gun owners and did many events in support of Obama, but had to close down due to a lack of support for its goals by the Obama adiministration.[3]

I did everything lefty as a kid but hit a baseball. For some reason like Rickey Henderson I was a righty hitter but lefty thrower. The other way around is more common- lefty hitter but righty thrower due to the advantage of being a lefty hitter. Wish I had hit lefty from the start. Today I mostly hit lefty but I will switch to the right if I fall behind in the count. I was playing softball as a ringer last summer. Had my first at bat lefty and got a hit but i fell behind on the second count so I switched to righty and the catcher was like “What the hell is this?” Ended up grounding out but I got a RBI. I always used to drive my kid brother nuts by claiming that us lefties are going to take over the world. But then he went and read that we die younger. Whatever, I’m happy to be in the same club as POTUS, Ben Franklin, Jimi Hendrix, and my two grandfathers.

In the high school orchestra, I sat next to a leftie violinist. Unless we were turned just right, with most every upstroke our bows clattered together. Once during a concert they actually got locked together - pulled my bow right out of my hand and it flew into the air, sending me scrambling to retrieve it. Makes me wonder what his presidency could have been life if he hadn’t been assassinated. I was so disappointed that my youngest brother ended up being a righty. Seems like my family’s good for one lefty a generation since both my grandfathers were, one uncle on each side were. A funny coincidence since both uncles were named after both of their fathers. So I guess that means to ensure a left handed son, I need to name him after me! Nah, not really, just a funny coincidence since both my grandfathers also married women who were older than them.

re: #181 allegro

In the high school orchestra, I sat next to a leftie violinist. Unless we were turned just right, with most every upstroke our bows clattered together. Once during a concert they actually got locked together - pulled my bow right out of my hand and it flew into the air, sending me scrambling to retrieve it. We were in pain trying not to lose it with laughter. It made it even harder watching the conductor fighting not to laugh as well.

I’m right handed, myself. However, when I play an electric guitar, I play left-handed - but when I play a bass guitar, it’s right-handed. I wonder if has to do with my first musical instrument being the piano.

Inheritance for handed is also very interesting. It is a little more complicated than this, but it seems to follow the same pattern as Rh factor. If you inherit a gene for right handedness, you are right handed. If there is no gene present, you have a 50-50 chance going either way.

That makes sense. Lefties do seem to run in families. As I said, both my grandfathers were and they each had one child who was. My dad’s brother is the only lefty out of the six in their family but 50/50 as you said- akin to flipping a coin and getting heads 5 times and getting tails 1 time doesn’t mean it’s not 50/50. I do wonder what the chances would be if you had two left handed parents.

Atticus Finch is what all American men should be, IMAO.

I always liked that Garfield factoid. Writing Latin with his right and Greek with his left. I believe I also read he spoke fluent German. He’s obviously not well remembered since his time in office was very short but James Garfield was a very smart guy. Makes me wonder what his presidency could have been life if he hadn’t been assassinated. Anyhow the bit about Truman and Reagan writing right handed leads me to believe they were forced to switch by a parent or teacher at an early age. I know that’s what my grandmother tried doing to my uncle.

Wouldn’t writing right-handed be favored when using ink since it would keep the hand away from was was just written (to the left and line above) and reduce the chance of smearing the ink before it dried?
