Cute but not too fond of them. I have come across herds of them and though usually they’ll run away, if they have babies they will stand their ground and start clicking their teeth. It’ s on the list of ‘ways I do not want to die’.

Cook them on a sheet of aluminum foil. I do this with my 50/50 bacon/beef burgers. Prevents the widespread death and destruction associated with the fat, but gets them cooked with a minimum of heat loss.

We have Collard Peccaries around here. They look about the same. About a year ago I was riding home and six adults were trotting towards me, but stayed on their side of the street as we passed each other. Since the moon is almost full now, and it’s the same time of year, I’m keeping my eyes peeled. Last week a deer ran along side me before pulling ahead and crossing the street right in front of me.

In general, if I want creative food in the kitchen, I get to cook. I can sometimes corrall an assistant, but…
So on days like this where I don’t have time because there’s yet another problem set to work on, it’s soup for dinner. Or cheese and crackers, or something else that involves minimal effort to make and comes from the freezer. Especially if I haven’t had time to go to the grocery store.

I should note, by the way, that I collect fats when cooking. For general cooking duck is best, bacon second, chicken third. Pork is best for sausages, and beef gets added as a supplement to the dog food. (note I’m not talking lard and cauls here, just rendered fats.)

When I was in my bachelor pad, I bought a ton frozen food because I had zero confidence in the kitchen and zero motivation to learn. Sure, my mom taught me how to follow a recipe but I’d never done it on my own and I didn’t really need to. When we got married and the budget tightened up, I learned to cook some pretty nice meals as a surprise / date night for my honey.

In other news the media isn’t covering:
Administration: HealthCare.gov Really Is Getting Better
The Obama administration has said that HealthCare.gov will be “working smoothly for the vast majority of users” by the end of November. They’ve brought in Jeff Zients, a former corporate executive, to save the ailing website from its disastrous launch. So how are they doing?
They’re making serious progress, Zients said on a Friday conference call with reporters.
The administration is judging its improvement by two metrics, Zients said: the website’s response times and its error rates. In other words, how long it takes a page to load for users and how often users encounter a crash or error page.
In both areas, Zients reported, HealthCare.gov is improving exponentially.

Legislators advance anti-abortion license plate in bitter, late-night session
In a return to form, the state Assembly closed out its last regular session day of the year Friday in the wee hours.
At center stage as Thursday slipped into Friday was a bitter debate over creating anti-abortion license plates. Legislators implied their colleagues were disreputable, questioned their motives, complained they were all acting like schoolchildren and griped about postings on Twitter.
The Assembly mostly avoided late-night votes in 2013 despite a long history of overnight sessions. But Thursday night the Assembly veered off its new, businesslike course and didn’t wrap up its work until just after 2 a.m.
Snip
The fight over the anti-abortion license plates capped a marathon session in which Republicans approved measures to reinstate Wisconsin’s voter ID law, tighten early voting hours, limit the ability to recall elected officials and restrict access to the site of a proposed iron mine in the North Woods.
As the night wore on, Republicans accused Democrats of wasting time, and their patience expired just after Democrats attempted to take up a resolution to honor the victims of last year’s Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Connecticut.
That resolution passed the Senate in September with unanimous support, but most Assembly Republicans blocked the measure from passing Thursday.

Some (what I feel) great news on the local homefront. Wal-Mart has been pushing very hard for over a year to build a store in my town in the north Chicago burbs. The location they picked was horrible, but I was surprised by the backlash coming from fellow townies. After a year of unsolicited phone calls and junk mail from Wal-Mart, it’s finally a dead deal. My town ended up making it just too difficult for them to build a store. We actually did something right for once.

“Not only does the directive violate the Colorado statute that specifically prohibits hospitals from exercising control over a doctor’s professional judgment, it also interferes with physicians’ ethical and moral responsibility to their patients,” writes ACLU attorney Sara Rich in a letter sent to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment on Wednesday. There’s nothing to amend, the law is working as intended. There is no need for a “fix,” except perhaps with how the media approaches this absolute joke of a controversy. Instead of throwing a collective fix over a small sliver of the overall health insurance market not being able to skate on crap insurance, they could actually be reporting on companies like Humana who deceived their customers into signing onto outrageously more expensive policies ahead of Kentucky’s insurance exchange roll-out.

The officeholders aren’t chumps, at least not most of them. But the people they represent dislike President Obama intensely and to work with him on something would risk a primary challenge. As one of my university professors taught, members of Congress ‘run scared’, constantly working to be in the best position to be reelected. Given that the policy differences between Republicans members of the House and those who would challenge them for the nomination are actually small, stylistic differences have come to loom larger. Having a cooperative style with the other party often earns a member of Congress the dreaded “Washington Insider” label.

That’s what we’ve mostly had in our history. The ‘news network as neutral arbiter’ was a post-WWII phase that has been ended by the march of technology. Nowadays a news broadcast has to fight for ratings and profits, and that means looking for coverage angles that do not alienate advertisers.

“Soup is Good Food”, by Dead Kennedys, 1985
We’re sorry
But you’re no longer needed
Or wanted
Or even cared about here
Machines can do a better job than you
And this is what you get for asking questionsThe unions agree
‘Sacrifices must be made’
Computers never go on strike
To save the working man
You’ve got to put him out to pastureLooks like we’ll have to let you go
Doesn’t it feel fulfilling to know
That you, the human being, are now obsolete
And there’s nothing in hell we’ll let you do about itSoup is good food (We don’t need you any more)
You make a good meal (We don’t need you any more)
Now how do you feel (We don’t need you any more)
To be shit out our ass
And thrown in the cold like a piece of trashWe’re sorry
You’ll just have to leave
Unemployment runs out after just six weeks
How does it feel to be a budget cut?
You’re snipped
You no longer existYour number’s been purged from our central computer
So we can rig the facts
And sweep you under the rug
See our chart? Unemployment’s going down
If that ruins your life that’s your problemSoup is Good Food, Etc.
We’re sorry
We hate to interrupt
But it’s against the law to jump off this bridge
You’ll just have to kill yourself somewhere else
A tourist might see you
And we wouldn’t want thatI’m just doing my job, you know
So say “uncle”
And we’ll take you to the mental health zoo
Force feed you mind-melting chemicals
Til even the outside world looks greatIn hi-tech science research labs
It costs too much to bury all the dead
The mutilated disease-injected
Surplus rats who can’t be used anymoreSo they’re dumped (with no minister present)
In a spiraling corkscrew dispose-all unit
Ground into stew and flushed away
Aw gee!Soup is good food
You make a good meal, etc:.We know how much you’d like to die
We joke about it on our coffee breaks
But we’re paid to force you to have a nice day
In the wonderful world we made just for you“Poor Rats”, we human rodents chuckle
At least we get a dignified cremation
But yet
At 6:00 tomorrow morning
It’s time to get up and go to work

I’m probably wrong, but my opinion is that inflation isn’t a problem per se. It’s a diagnostic indicator like the human body temperature.
Example: A person has a temperature of, say, 40C (104F). That’s way too high. So check for an infection. Maybe antibiotics. Ice packs under armpits. Or maybe just get out of the sun and rehydrate.
If they have a temperature of 33C (93F) check for bleeding. Treat for shock. Maybe get them indoors and warm them up.
There are a lot of reasons for human body temperature extremes, and for extreme inflation/deflation. In both cases they are indicative of a problem, not a problem themselves.
But we are, for the most part, at the ‘bodily humours’ stage of economics so most of our ‘solutions’ just make things worse.

At least, I hope I’m not.
Today, I totally scored a 1970s vintage ETA 2403 vacuum cleaner! It’s even got all the accessories, and came with a new filter and replacement bags. A fellow downstairs on the fifth floor was putting up a little note on the notice board downstairs, giving it away, and I aced it. Works great, too, and it’s in pretty much brand-new condition - it was certainly well maintained.

I said it the other day…and I’ll say it again. Term limits!
We need to get the thinking back that being a congressman is all about service to your country and not a life-long career as a lump collecting ‘donations’ from your backers.
If you want to make a name in two/three terms (2 senate, maybe 3 house?) you have to get moving and get some stuff done. It would change the whole look of what government could be about. Service like the military. And make it an honor to serve. Might get some honor back into congress.

re: #130 ObserverArt
I said it the other day…and I’ll say it again. Term limits!
To which I will reply with my usual objection by George Carlin.
Now, there’s one thing you might have noticed I don’t complain about: politicians. Everybody complains about politicians. Everybody says they suck. Well, where do people think these politicians come from? They don’t fall out of the sky. They don’t pass through a membrane from another reality. They come from American parents and American families, American homes, American schools, American churches, American businesses and American universities, and they are elected by American citizens. This is the best we can do folks. This is what we have to offer. It’s what our system produces: Garbage in, garbage out. If you have selfish, ignorant citizens, you’re going to get selfish, ignorant leaders. Term limits ain’t going to do any good; you’re just going to end up with a brand new bunch of selfish, ignorant Americans. So, maybe, maybe, maybe, it’s not the politicians who suck. Maybe something else sucks around here… like, the public. Yeah, the public sucks. There’s a nice campaign slogan for somebody: “The Public Sucks. Fuck Hope.”
As far as making public service an honour goes, well, good luck with that. In an economically deterministic society like ours honour doesn’t count for anything because it can’t be counted at all. If it can’t be put on a ledger it doesn’t exist in our society.

Guess he never got on the plane but this may be the lamest excuse I have ever heard of:
According to his publicist, Debra de Souza, Brand was denied access to the plane because ‘he did not have two free pages in his passport’, which is the minimum needed to enter the country.

.
Term limits were considered and discarded by the constitutional convention. Hamilton in Federalist #72 discusses why: en.wikisource.org
In addition Madison in #52 en.wikisource.org argues that frequent elections is a better way of getting rid of bad representatives than artificially limiting their term of office.
While neither would be terribly amused by today’s political parties, the problems they cite with term limits for president or congress are still true despite the party system as it has evolved here.

136 | Absalom, Absalom, Obdicut Sat, Nov 16, 2013 10:17:30am |
Both term limits and non-term-limits have their flaws. Term limits means that people won’t give too much of a fuck about pissing off their constituents, and will move more easily into lobbyist positions afterwards. Non-term-limits mean assholes stay in forever because of entrenchment and accruing favors and all sorts of incumbent advantage.
I seriously think that every rep and senator should be assigned someone whose only job is to point out where they fuck up the actual job, not the politics, but the job. And to point out gross ethics violations.

I’m letting all your comments cook. Some good points.
All I know, what we have now isn’t very good. How else could a group that is at a 9% approval rating do what they are doing if they weren’t already in somebodies pockets? At 9%, you really aren’t even listening to your own district so you have to be listening to ‘other’ influences. Any worry about them being bought in by lobbyists makes me wonder where the difference is from term limit to no limits. What really makes this group tick. Sometimes it seems even they do not know.
My thinking is maybe if there were limits, then the lobbyists and money people would have to find new puppets more often which means the strings might not be attached near as deep and run as long as they are with someone who’s had a seat for so long.
Just kicking it around. Part of what drives me to think what could be done is this Congress at this time (Obama) is unlike anything I’ve seen in my near 60 years. Talk about a “do-nothing” congress. Isn’t this crap unprecedented?

It means that those ‘new puppets’ will know that as soon as they get out they get a job with the lobbying company or an associated organization.
