Copied from the last thread, but on the topic of entertainment:

A show I’d like to see:

A short season (6-10 episode) show based on H.P. Lovecraft stories. Have the central setting being Arkham and Miskatonic university, with only a few keystone characters, but otherwise switch up the cast every season. They could do “The Dunwich Horror”, “The Shadow over Innsmouth”, “The case of Charles Dexter Ward” building up over each episode. They could also throw in some of the shorter stories like “Pickman’s Mode”l or “The Terrible Old Man” as one shot or filler episodes.

I really couldn’t get into it, but I appreciated the effort.

There was a movie a few years back called “The Resurrected” based on “The case of Charles Dexter Ward” which was pretty good.

Looks like they renamed it at some point.

Uncanny coincidence; there’s an older version, called “The Haunted Palace”, starring Vincent Price, and it too is based on “The Case Of Charles Dexter Ward”. I’m watching it right now on YouTube.

Great little video. I love how they gave use the feeling that Superman’s forcing his way through the air; he’s not “floating” when he’s flying, he’s sort of punching gravity into submission. Very cool.

Your human evolution news of the day (and it’s a good one):

The genomic landscape of Neanderthal ancestry in present-day humans

Genomic studies have shown that Neanderthals interbred with modern humans, and that non-Africans today are the products of this mixture. The antiquity of Neanderthal gene flow into modern humans means that genomic regions that derive from Neanderthals in any one human today are usually less than a hundred kilobases in size. However, Neanderthal haplotypes are also distinctive enough that several studies have been able to detect Neanderthal ancestry at specific loci. We systematically infer Neanderthal haplotypes in the genomes of 1,004 present-day humans. Regions that harbour a high frequency of Neanderthal alleles are enriched for genes affecting keratin filaments, suggesting that Neanderthal alleles may have helped modern humans to adapt to non-African environments. We identify multiple Neanderthal-derived alleles that confer risk for disease, suggesting that Neanderthal alleles continue to shape human biology. An unexpected finding is that regions with reduced Neanderthal ancestry are enriched in genes, implying selection to remove genetic material derived from Neanderthals. Genes that are more highly expressed in testes than in any other tissue are especially reduced in Neanderthal ancestry, and there is an approximately fivefold reduction of Neanderthal ancestry on the X chromosome, which is known from studies of diverse species to be especially dense in male hybrid sterility genes. These results suggest that part of the explanation for genomic regions of reduced Neanderthal ancestry is Neanderthal alleles that caused decreased fertility in males when moved to a modern human genetic background.

Evolution in action.

In our genome.

If only you were exaggerating…

DNA Proof That Neandertals Are Just Humans

From a creationist perspective, these studies really add very little to the already clear genetic evidence showing that the Neandertals are nothing but another variant in the human lineage derived from the eight individuals who survived the global Flood as recorded in the book of Genesis. Because the remains of these archaic humans are found in burial sites in caves rather than in flood sediments, we can therefore infer that their age is no more than about 4,000 years—not the 40,000-plus years typically given by evolutionists.

Oh fun. FOX reporting that the USPS will need a massive restructuring in Congress thanks to that stupid pension requirement, and Issa’s the man who apparently controls what that will be.

Anyone else tend to think it’ll be de-unionized at best, and possibly even just shut down and a law passed allowing UPS and FedEx to handle standard letters?

With Issa’s felonious meathooks in it, the outcome is sure to be a disaster.

It will be ironic if this results in total loss of postal service to more rural parts of the US that tend to vote heavily for the GOP.

BBC Show Named Free Speech Limits Free Speech

A BBC show named Free Speech limited free speech just a tad at the behest of its host recently. The episode was being filmed at the Birmingham Central Mosque and they aired a question from a man who professed to be “Britain’s first and only gay Muslim drag queen,” only to say they would not be discussing his question at all.

In a video question, Asifa Lahore said, “One question I’d like to ask the Muslim community is when will it be all right to be Muslim and gay?”

Immediately after showing that video, the presenter jumped in to explain that they would not be debating that question:

“After speaking to the mosque, they have expressed deep concerns with having this discussion here. The mosque were happy for us to play that video, and we will talk about it on our next program.”

Meanwhile, in the Kremlin:

Russia signaled concern on Wednesday at Estonia’s treatment of its large ethnic Russian minority, comparing language policy in the Baltic state with what it said was a call in Ukraine to prevent the use of Russian.

Russia has defended its annexation of Ukraine’s Crimea peninsula by arguing it has the right to protect Russian-speakers outside its borders, so the reference to linguistic tensions in another former Soviet republic comes at a highly sensitive moment.

First Climate Article On Nate Silver’s Data Website Uses ‘Deeply Misleading’ Data, Top Climatologists Say

One of the first articles on Nate Silver’s highly anticipated data-driven news site used flawed data to make its conclusions, according to some of the nation’s top climate scientists.

Silver’s FiveThirtyEight published its first article about climate change on Wednesday, entitled “Disasters Cost More Than Ever — But Not Because of Climate Change.” But climate scientists are condemning the article and its author, Robert Pielke Jr., saying he ignored critical data to produce a “deeply misleading” result.

The Washington Post gives Putin 4 Pinocchios for his Crimea speech

The Pinocchio Test

The Fact Checker is obviously not rating the entire speech, which reflects Putin’s worldview. But certainly this selection of statements is highly deficient or based on slim facts. He ignores Russia’s real interest in removing nuclear weapons from Ukraine’s soil, which led to a pledge by Moscow to respect Kiev’s sovereignty. He hypes the involvement of nationalist and right-wing groups in the uprising. The Kosovo analogy is a real stretch. One could quibble on whether some of these statements are worth Three Pinocchios, but the statement on the Crimean referendum by itself is worth Four Pinocchios. So that’s what the Russian president earns.

64 EPR-radar  Wed, Mar 19, 2014 4:26:53pm

That is a big disappointment. Nate Silver is apparently not properly acquainted with the concept of “not even wrong”, which applies to things like climate change denial and creationism.

Some ideas and positions simply must be excluded from any rational discussion of issues precisely because they are founded on rejection of logic and reason.

From the article….

Gasthof’s owner Mario Pierzchalski doesn’t understand the uproar. An immigrant of Poland, Pierzchalski said the participants were merely “actors” and “peaceful people.” Even so, Pierzchalski said that after six years of hosting the party, the event will no longer be held at his establishment.

“So now we have a lot of bad messages on our phones; they want to burn down the building,” he told the Star Tribune. “We live in a free country…but from the comments I see, a lot of people they don’t see what freedom is. If I break the law, punish me. But we did this for so many years and everything was fine.”

It was a historical society event, not real Nazis. Should this immigrant be getting death threats? Are we going to extend the same outrage to civil war reenactments with confederate soldiers? It’s silly, this guy doesn’t deserve this. His business hosted an event, these aren’t real Nazis.

Even that explanation is dishonest, though.

I don’t care if someone’s a WW2 cosplayer. I know a guy who is a very passionate WW1 cosplay guy. He’s been doing “living history” roleplay since forever, aging his costumes and gear appropriately as he’s gotten older. But even the most passionate fan of history knows goddamn well that hosting a Nazi themed anything in public is a stupid fucking idea. And hosting it on MLK Day? Really?

I don’t care what their intentions were. It’s still a fucking stupid thing to do.

Dressing up as a Nazi and a having a beer-and-bratwurst party is re-enacting precisely fuck all.

I would actually be more comfortable if it was a re-enactment of a specific event where specific Nazis did something important.

This is a good illustration of the severe limits of this fact-checking business.

Confederate civil war re-enactors are creepy as hell and should be shamed. This guy hosted a Nazi themed party for years, on MLK day, and in your bottomless credulity for all weak shit you buy his thin excuse about actors. So fucking lame.

It was also supposedly a Christmas party. On MLK Jr. Day. And “the timing of the party was based only on when the restaurant was closed.”

Minneapolis resident Scott Steben, who has played small parts as a German soldier in at least three movies, said the dinner was a Christmas party and an exercise for period actors like himself who make a hobby of dressing in World War II uniforms. […]

The dinner was held Jan. 20, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, but Steben said the timing of the party was based only on when the restaurant was closed. […]

Ugh. I just read part of that Max Blumenthal hit piece on James Kirchick, and the very first article I checked to see if it was represented accurately was completely distorted by Blumenthal:

Accusing Manning of treason, Kirchick argued that Manning should have been executed, and that her supporters were consumed by “a vengeful, anti-state dogma directed mostly at one state: the United States.”

Here’s the article:

nydailynews.com

And here’s what Kirchick actually wrote:

Bradley Manning should consider himself lucky not to be headed to the electric chair.

In a plain reading of the term, the private first class is a traitor. He gave aid to America’s enemies when he indiscriminately shared a quarter-million secret diplomatic cables with the anti-secrecy website WikiLeaks. In perpetrating the largest dump of classified information in American history, he put the lives of countless innocent people worldwide in danger and compromised his country’s national security in manifold ways.

Tuesday, a military judge found him guilty of most of the charges against him that he was contesting, but not guilty of aiding the enemy by posting secret communications where Al Qaeda and others could easily find them, a rough equivalent to printing the names and home addresses of mafia informants in a daily newspaper.

Treason is the only crime defined in the U.S. Constitution, and it warrants the ultimate penalty: death. While Manning’s defenders decry the U.S. for “persecuting” a “whistleblower,” they should be thanking military prosecutors for not seeking capital punishment for Manning’s capital crimes.

He’s obviously NOT “arguing” that Manning “should have been executed” — he’s saying Manning is lucky he didn’t get the death penalty. That’s not the same thing. Blumenthal simply distorted it to make it sound as bad as possible.

What garbage. I couldn’t read any more. Fuck these people.

Mine are not technically migraines. Doctors just call them migraines because they have the same symptoms. Due to the Ehlers-Danlos, I have cervical instability which involves the jaw etc. Anyway after so many years, all the nerves can get fired up and it just takes time for them to calm down.

Dismissing things as outrages works better when

(1) You’re not smug enough to make a gay cake joke, or a pepper-spray joke, that suggests that your priority is feeling clever.
(2) You don’t do it with such consistency that it suggests that you’re ostentatiously finding and denouncing “outrages”
(3) You actually read what you’re presenting with sufficient thoroughness to have an informed opinion.
(4) You don’t do so on a board where you rather extravagantly lost your shit, insulted a bunch of people, and never apologized, on the basis of shitty materials that you failed to vet because you were looking for something to be outraged by.

So then you’re cool with Nakba Day, and think Israel’s outrage over it and the bill the Knesset passed in 2011 requiring the state to penalize local authorities and other state-funded bodies for holding events marking it is totally over the top because free speech, our shared values, etcetera, right?

Or is this a case of “Well, that’s different because…”?

Knesset passes ‘Nakba bill’

The Knesset passed two controversial bills late Tuesday night, infuriating many MKs from Arab and left-wing parties, who claim the bills are racist and run counter to democratic values.

The “Nakba bill”, proposed by Yisrael Beiteinu, requires the state to fine local authorities and other state-funded bodies for holding events marking the Palestinian Nakba Day by supporting armed resistance or racism against Israel, or desecrating the state flag or national symbols.

On Nakba Day Palestinians mark the “catastrophe” of Israel’s inception in 1948.

The bill, which was reworked before its final passing, states that the finance minister will be charged with deciding when to withdraw funds from various groups after considering the opinions of the attorney general and a professional team comprised of members of the ministries of finance and justice.

Nearly half of Americans subscribe to a medical conspiracy theory

Is there really a link between vaccine and autism, cellphones and cancer, the HIV virus and the CIA? Almost half of Americans believe the answer is yes for at least one of the many medical conspiracy theories that have circulated in recent years. And the attitudes and behavior of those conspiracists toward standard medical advice reflect that mistrust, says a study out this week.

A pair of University of Chicago social scientists set out to determine the extent of “medical conspiracism” among the U.S. public and conducted a nationally representative online survey. They gauged knowledge of and beliefs about six widely discussed medical conspiracy theories and explored how belief in those theories influenced individuals’ behavior when it came to matters of health.

Yeah, I can’t understand why those darned Jews always start with their whiny outrage over a harmless little thing like dressing up as perpetrators of genocide. Oh wait, or was it some other group that has the “unhealthy mentality”? Maybe blacks or liberals in general?

Well, I am training for a 400 mile tour in June, it’s going to be an easy one, they carry the gear, the terrain is very flat, but it’s 4 states (Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee and Arkansas). Should make for a very enjoyable week. (and it’s never too early to start carbo-loading)

RBS

Some time back I read that there was ONE study of carbo-loading done with women as subjects. Had no benefit. I’m carb-sensitive myself. If I don’t get enough fat and protein in each meal, I’m hungry again very soon. If I eat an apple, it makes me more hungry, not less.

On the climate change front, I find it sad, but not unexpected, that Dr. Hansen is finding that his proposals are getting little support from anyone.

The know-nothing wingnuts are still screaming about GOREBULL WARMING conspiracies, while the intransigent Democratic party is divided internally along economic and geographic lines.

Dr. Hansen put it bluntly last week:

[…]

Nuclear scientists were ready in 1976 to build a demonstration fast nuclear power plant. However, the project was stopped by President Jimmy Carter in his first State-of-the-Union message. Research continued at a low level until 1993 when President Bill Clinton delivered an intended coup de grace, declaring “We are eliminating programs that are no longer needed, such as nuclear power research and development.” Clinton was caving in to a quasi-religious anti-nuke minority in the Democratic Party, whose unrealistic “belief” was that diffuse renewable energies could satisfy all energy needs.

R&D on advanced technologies, including thorium reactors with the potential to ameliorate remaining concerns about nuclear power, was stifled, seemingly because it was too promising. Powerful anti-nuclear forces had their way with the Democratic Party. “Green” organizations had indoctrinated themselves in anti-nuclear fervor, and their intransigence blinded them to the fact that they were nearly eliminating the one option for abundant clean electricity with inexhaustible fuel and a small planetary footprint.

[…]

Such progress is crucial. Recent events have been spiraling down so rapidly that I find it hard to sleep. Ex-President Clinton campaigns for a huge pipeline to carry Canadian tar sands, which would light a fuse to the dirtiest energy source on Earth, opening the way for unconventional fossil fuels that should be left in the ground. Dogged insistence by environmental groups that intermittent renewable energies are the only alternative to fossil fuels assures massive expansion of hydraulic-fracturing and helps lock-in longterm dependence on gas for electricity and carbon-intensive crude oil for vehicles.

[…]

It’s pretty clear he doesn’t hold the Clintons in high regard.

My degrees are all in electrical engineering, but I think more like a scientist than an engineer. It would be good to see more emphasis on critical thinking in the engineering departments in academia. If nothing else, it would probably be helpful for engineers confronted with a need to come up with new and better designs.

Freddie Mercury: Early life

Mercury was born on the British protectorate of Zanzibar, East Africa (now part of Tanzania). His parents, Bomi and Jer Bulsara, were Parsis from the Gujarat region of the then province of Bombay Presidency in British India. The family surname is derived from the town of Bulsar (also known as Valsad) in southern Gujarat. As Parsis, Mercury and his family practised the Zoroastrian religion. The Bulsara family had moved to Zanzibar so that his father could continue his job as a cashier at the British Colonial Office. He had a younger sister, Kashmira.

This is our world:

Nearly half of Americans subscribe to a medical conspiracy theory

From a paper published here:

Medical Conspiracy Theories and Health Behaviors in the United States

I don’t believe any of those “conspiracies” at all. But I do think that physicians often over-prescribe. And prescribe wrongly. Esp when you tell them you don’t tolerate opiates and they still give them to you. Or they don’t read your info and give you something you are allergic to, such as the penicillin I was prescribed a few mos ago by a dentist.

We’ve also had overprescribing of antibiotics, and anti-psychotics and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Pharms are notorious for courting doctors with their latest products and using the public for their guinea pigs, often after only cursory trials by the pharms, and quick approvals by the FDA. I’m not even going to get in mfg quality control, esp of generics.

I’m just now getting over that 100 mg of Tramadol I took last night and the nauseating effects it had on me, after I requested no opioids or opiates, synthetics or semi-synthetics. Of any kind. No darvocet, percocet, Tylenol 3, Dilaudid, none of that crap—all of which I’ve been prescribed in the past and did not take past the first couple of pills after experiencing the side effects of nausea and/or vomiting.

Don’t get me wrong. Some drugs are great and life savers, but so are changes in lifestyle, taking care of oneself, and using preventative measures, and we’re not taught a lot of that, at least correctly. I applaud the Obamas in that respect and their efforts to change our diets, get us moving, preventing disease and getting care of chronic diseases.

I’m really leaning toward the idea that everyone needs to take a semester on Bayes Theorem. I can’t really think of a better way to show how bad humans are at reasoning than to show how easy it would be for a 96% accurate drug test to put you in jail.

This really shouldn’t take a semester to do. For example, lets suppose we have a 99% accurate drug test that is administered to 1,000,000 people, and that 10% of these 1,000,000 people are drug users.

Simplifying things a bit, the results will be:

99,000 people correctly identified as drug users.

1,000 people incorrectly identified as non-drug users.

891,000 people correctly identified as non-drug users.

9,000 people incorrectly identified as drug users.

So if all that is known about someone from this group of people is that they failed the drug test, the chance that they are actually a drug user is 99/108, which is about a 9% false positive rate. This false positive rate is much greater than the 1% error rate one would naively expect from the raw accuracy of the test.

I suspect it will take a lot of examples to get over people’s normal inclination to believe that a test that is 98% accurate will only fail two percent of the time, and therefore, only two out of 100 people will get flagged wrong. Or a test for cancer, or other similar problems. It takes a while to get the idea that it’s more than just the test accuracy that influences the results.

OT: Are there any database people here?

I’m cleaning up a MySQL database table that has some duplicate entries, namely inventory ID (inv_id) numbers for 600+ records. About 2/3 of the records are also for the same company—i.e. they are (or were, until they got updated by the client)—exact duplicates. For those, I’ve already confirmed that I can safely delete the one with the older contract expiration date.

For the others, the inv_id numbers are the same, but are for different companies. Those are going to need new numbers so that the correct record will come up when the client wants to update it. Can I manually renumber these, or would it be more practical to just drop the inv_id field for that table and then recreate it and figure out how to automatically repopulate it as an auto incrementing primary key?

BTW, for some reason the inv_id is no longer a primary key. I’m not sure how that happened unless it was when I was merging an old backed-up table with a new one… Anyway, any advice and/or warnings about potential gotchas would be greatly appreciated.

One more thing: The following query lets me see all the data for all duplicate records, which is great.

SELECT *
FROM inventory
WHERE inv_id IN (
SELECT inv_id
FROM inventory
GROUP BY inv_id
HAVING count(inv_id) > 1
)
ORDER BY inv_id

BUT, if I wanted to just select duplicate records where the inv_id and company_name are the same but the exp_date is later… can anyone nudge me towards the best statements/clauses to use in my query?

IOW, what I’m saying is I’m desperately trying to avoid having to manually compare like 400 records and drop 200 of them. O_o

I’d probably do a self join, something like this…

SELECT I.Inv_ID, I.Company_Name, I.Expry_date, I2.Inv_ID, I2.Company_Name, I2.Expry_Date
FROM Inventory as I
JOIN Inventory as I2
ON I.Inv_id = I2.Inv_ID, I.Company_Name = I2.Company_Name
Where I.Expry_Date < I2.Expry_Date

Something like that should get you along the right path.

Netanyahu orders IDF to prepare for possible strike on Iran during 2014

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon have ordered the army to continue preparing for a possible military strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities at a cost of at least 10 billion shekels ($2.89 billion) this year, despite the talks between Iran and the West, according to recent statements by senior military officers.

Three Knesset members who were present at Knesset joint committee hearings on Israel Defense Forces plans that were held in January and February say they learned during the hearings that 10 billion shekels to 12 billion shekels of the defense budget would be allocated this year for preparations for a strike on Iran, approximately the same amount that was allocated in 2013.

My “Mental Processor” says that it should work, I really hate correlated sub-queries, and since MS SQL often rewrites them internally as a join when it optimizes them, I just figured do it as a join to start with.

I taught a T-SQL class a couple of weeks ago, I think I did something like this as an example. (I’ve slept since then, so I don’t recall)

I would do a SELECT DISTINCT to get the unique ID’s and load them into a new table.

The strangest searches that brought people to thebloggess.com this week:

“What will happened if centipedes go inside your ear?” (Screaming, probably?)

“Does anyone pronounce the L in caulk?” (I find it’s more fun if you don’t.)

“Why is everything making sense in my life?” (Frankly, that would be disconcerting to me too.)

“Not my fault your ugly.” (Fair enough. Not my fault you can’t use “you’re” properly.)

“Human baby eating” (I’m confused. Are you wanting to know what human babies should be eating, or the best way to eat human babies? Please be more specific.)

“How to make people think you are a wizard” (Good luck with that.)

I have a cron job set up to run a shell script that backs up all the tables every night, and then emails me a copy and stores another one on the server, so that gives me some peace of mind.

It’s very 19th century of them.

My snark about Don Quixote was meant to be more than just snark.

All too often we are marks for our own chosen particular profession/occupation/avocation.

Gavin spends his day immersed in data, graphs, communications about such, and so on. And thus he projects that such human inventions (and remember graphs are just pictures, sort of like the Mona Lisa, but with fewer smiles) will be appreciated by all other humans.

Communicating science is one of those hot topics in the overlap between social sciences and hard sciences these days.

I’ve tried.

For years.

For decades.

E.g., I first dealt with creationist well over 3 decades ago.

At some point I came to the conclusion that people will believe whatever they need to, to get through the day.

Since there are duplicate inv_id’s, I wouldn’t recommend you to make it primary key just yet. If the inv_id’s are supposed to be just an auto_increment, you do something like this (although I’d change the last queries to be ALTER TABLE table AUTO_INCREMENT = 1;).

Else, you can modify it by hand.

Always be careful when renumbering a column: Double check if this column is used anywhere else in the database as reference. If so, it’s better to renumber manually.

There might be other things I’m missing.

Thanks! I successfully added a new column using:

ALTER TABLE inventory ADD id INT NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT FIRST, ADD PRIMARY KEY (id), AUTO_INCREMENT=1

It worked exactly as I wanted it to, so I’ve got that part down. I figure once I get everything cleaned up, then I can either drop inv_id and rename id to the same, or drop both and have a nice new freshly numbered table.

At the moment I’m working through the example RBS gave me in his #231, trying to understand everything. I’ve got:

SELECT i1.inv_id, i1.cust_name, i1.exp_date, i2.inv_id, i2.cust_name, i2.exp_date
FROM inventory as i1
JOIN inventory as i2
ON i1.cust_name = i2.cust_name
AND i1.exp_date < i2.exp_date

I’m gonna test it out before I go to bed and see what happens.
