The Last Reasonable Games Designer Says…
Checkout this fictional harrowing fly on the wall tale of interoffice politicking, at the latest developmental meeting for everyone’s favorite company. But remember kids, this is purely fictional…
Wallace Cumberlich, resident of Nottingham for ten years, slightly chubby, happily married to an equally slightly chubby wife, and general lover of heavy British pub food and heavier British beer sat down at the table next to his co-workers- Cruddace, Ward, and Kelly.
He had been working for Gee Dub for a few years now, and although the likes of Cruddace and Ward were his seniors by a score of years and must have known for sure what they were doing, Wallace often had a nagging, paranoid feeling every time the design team sat down for tea that he was the only sane human being in the room.
Every time they talked about 40K, he felt like he was trying to herd cats.

Indeed:
The Legend of the Octopus is a sports tradition during Detroit Red Wings home playoff games where octopuses are thrown onto the ice surface. The origins of the activity go back to the 1952 playoffs, when a National Hockey League team played two best-of-seven series to capture the Stanley Cup. The octopus, having eight arms, symbolized the number of playoff wins necessary for the Red Wings to win the Stanley Cup. The practice started April 15, 1952 when Pete and Jerry Cusimano, brothers and storeowners in Detroit’s Eastern Market, hurled an octopus into the rink of The Old Red Barn.[1] The team swept the Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens en route to winning the championship, as well as winning two of the next three championships.

The Blackhawks now face a tough road trip that will take them first to Boston, then to Ottawa, and lastly to Pittsburgh. The Bruins and Penguins are tough and the Blackhawks need to beat at least one of them (this assumes the Hawks defeat the Senators).

By ‘need to’, i mean in order to insure a good playoff spot. With 99 points already, the Blackhawks will secure a postseason berth with one more win or overtime loss. So for the Blackhawks its now about getting a good position rather than ‘a position’.

A state lawmaker from Lincoln County who once opposed a bill that would force insurers to cover chemotherapy pills says she changed her position after she learned she has cancer.Mary Czaja, R-Irma, the state representative for the 35th Assembly District, said her view on the bill — which could take effect next year — began to change in January. That’s when she began her own battle with stage 3 breast cancer.
“I’m not a big mandate person,” said Czaja, who spent the bulk of her career in the insurance industry. “After a long conversation with my doctor, I started to think about the issue in a new way. It’s not just the affordability factor; it’s about helping people get back to normal and get back to work.”
You know what Republicans? It’d be a lot easier to take you seriously if you weren’t so abjectly self centered and fucking ridiculous. This is exactly what people mean when they talking about a general empathy deficit on the right, and the difference between sympathy and empathy. Republicans operate, continuously in a mode where connecting with others and seeing them as human beings worth something is only possible if there’s a shared experience to create a bridge.
That’s why they can connect with rich, selfish assholes, because that’s a shared experience. But it takes an extraordinary event to even try to connect with poor people, people suffering, the sick, uninsured or in need. For Republicans the idea that everyone has an intrinsic value, that you don’t need to have literally gone through the same experiences as another to view them as a person worth something in and of themselves is a totally alien concept, and totally anathema.

But as Ian Millhiser noted at ThinkProgress, the news from the court isn’t all rosy. For one thing, Justice Anthony Kennedy seems to believe this is a case about abortion. Millhiser points out that Kennedy does not seem to think — as Hobby Lobby (incorrectly) does — that emergency contraception is an abortion-inducing drug. Instead, he seemed interested in the possibility that a future law may compel Hobby Lobby to pay for abortion:[Kennedy] did not weigh in on the question of whether non-abortions can count as abortion — indeed, he seemed to understand the difference between birth control and abortion. Nevertheless, he looked at the government’s requirement to provide birth control coverage and envisioned a future law compelling Hobby Lobby to pay for actual abortions — just as he once gazed upon a requirement to buy health insurance and imagined the government forcing everyone to buy broccoli. In Justice Kennedy’s Courtroom, the government doesn’t have to defend the law it actually passed, it has to defend the worst law Kennedy can imagine them passing — even if that law would never make it through Congress.
What the fuck is wrong with this asshole?

One of the internet’s most privacy invading companies goes all in:

I predict we’ll soon have a backlash of ginormous proportions against so much sharing. After your real life privacy is invaded so many times by strangers through technology, why would you bother to share anything with anyone in real life? Or is that the way of the future, fantasy enabled by technology overtaking reality in the meat world?
It’s really an odd dichotomy when you think about it: “Sharing” types of technology invented by dudebro types who fully embrace the concept of libertarianism. And as Zuckerberg has shown in a fine example of the Big Fish gulping down the Little Fish, his recent purchases of small companies like Oculus mean, for the most part, that sharing is really not part of their business plan. Making zillions more in wealth is.
It’s one of the striking examples offered by Robert Reich, BTW, in his movie, “Inequality for All”, in which he makes the observation that individual tech types like Zuckerberg get rich in virtually a small time frame through technology. When their companies are offered as an IPO, these tech millionaires can become billionaires overnight while those at the initial selling, the institutional investors who help him set it up, also increase their own worth, thereby diverting the bulk of the fortunes they create to the upper 1%. And all for a time waster that produces nothing much of real value in the real world for those who utilize it. Well, maybe it gives some people a bit of “power” when they can “unfriend” or “block” you, but the damaging effects have already been accomplished.

Let’s say a man meets a woman at a bar in downtown Denver. They get along, so they start dating. On the second date, the woman drinks too much, and they end up going back to his apartment and sleeping together. The next day, the woman is embarrassed when she mentions what happened to one of her friends. Mortified that she slept with a man on their second date, she accuses him of Sexual Assault - C.R.S. 18-3-402, and says she was too drunk to say ‘yes.” The man could be accused with felony rape and the sentence enhancer of Domestic Violence, because the alleged crime occurred between two people who were in an “intimate relationship.”

I believe an awful lot of it comes from both a teaching and feeling of extreme “individualism” that the person can be and do anything which gives them a sort of veil of “self-protection” and insulation from reality. “I am an island!” These are the same kinds of people who don’t show their emotions to others and mock those who do. They don’t “need” anyone but themselves. There is little balance in their lives but little joy, either, in the human interactions they actually do engage in. There is no give and take, of any kind, and what they try to simulate is obviously artificial to the astute observer of people.
Look at someone like Sarah Palin, for instance, or any of the “names” we know that are like-minded. They have absolutely no interior life; they don’t even think about it. People are just another commodity to them.

The altruistic side of aggressive greed
[…]
Humans are unique in their innate ability and willingness to cooperate within groups ranging in size from small-scale forager bands to nations of millions of individuals. Yet, cooperation has its downsides as it can lead to what scientists call “the collective action problem,” which says that if individual effort is costly and a group member can benefit from the action of group-mates, then there is an incentive to “free-ride,” whereby effort is reduced or withdrawn completely. If a number of group-mates follow this logic, the public good is not produced and all group members suffer. The collective action problem also occurs in conflicts between groups: everyone benefits from the group’s success, but achieving success requires costly contributions by members of the group.

There’s stoopid, and then there is state-sponsored stoopid.
China Central TV’s English news service runs this story:
Mount Ararat believed to be resting place of Noah’s Ark
[…]
In Khor Virap, close to the Turkish border, an ancient monastery provides reminders of the biblical story. There’s an excerpt from the Book of Genesis on display here, in front of a picturesque view of Ararat. Visitors are also given the opportunity to release a dove, as a reminder of Noah apparently sending out a dove from the Ark to search for ground.
“Ararat for me is proof that what is written in the Bible is true, contrary to those who say that this is myth,” said Aris Tonoyan, archpriest at the monastery.
“Ararat proves that it is true and Noah found a resting place here. There are some scientists who doubt it and are searching for Ararat elsewhere, I don’t know where they have got this idea from but all historic maps show that Mount Ararat is here. “
Sceptics believe the story of Noah is nothing but people’s memory of natural disasters. They doubt the correlation between the biblical stories and archaeology.
“This is how Ararat valley looked when it was covered with water. It was impossible to live there, and only when the water disappeared people came down from the mountains to the valley to start working in the fields. That is from where the legend of Noah has come from,” said archaeologist Boris Gasparyan.
Though both sides point to archaeological evidence it is hardly likely they will reach any consensus soon.Whether history or myth, many people will agree the story of Noah is truly an inspiring epic of faith, courage and hope.

Narcissism strikes again. And loses.
Man who used good looks as defense convicted of rape
“A Cobb County jury convicted a 23-year-old man Tuesday afternoon of kidnapping and assaulting a woman he met at a East-West Connector pharmacy.
“Darrious Mathis, of Austell, was found guilty on all charges related to the October 2011 incident, including kidnapping, carjacking, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during commission of a felony, and possession of a firearm by a first-offender probationer, the Cobb County District Attorney’s Office said.
“A woman said Mathis forced her from a CVS parking lot, drove her around and then sexually assaulted her in Atlanta. The victim said she tried to keep Mathis calm along the way. Video surveillance footage from the CVS and DNA and physical evidence corroborated the woman’s story, according to the DA’s office.” More

I don’t know what it is, where the conditioning comes from, whether it’s something in the way they’re raised or what. But the empathy deficit often seems to extend down to the very core of the conservative personality, like a pathological rot.
I think part of it is the “I’m an asshole and proud of it” mentality, where “asshole” means (to them) that one is always honest and blunt and outspoken and tells it like the world is and lets the chips fall where they may and yadda yadda.
Basically, not having any concern for other people. You know, actually being an asshole,

Ewwww! That’s a girl’s bike.
I had one very similar to it when I lived in Berlin - a Victoria bicycle, quite old, made in the early 1930s. I didn’t want to lug it with me when I moved here, so I gave it a friend of mine, and she’s still riding it around.
Everyone loved that bike - I let friends borrow it, and once they got used to it - especially the coaster brake and the spoon brake up front - they wanted one too. Yeah, it’s a “girl’s bike”, but they’re dependable, easy to work on, and overbuilt. You could run that thing into a brick wall.

re: #59 Justanotherhuman
Overall QFT.

But a lot of these positions are now in-office. It seems like a switch: five years ago, the pendulum was all about telework, but now it’s swung back the other way.
Just as I became up for it.
Le sigh.

All the time. Every damn day. Especially since I’m looking for work and I keep reading these articles talking about how shitty the market is and how my chances of ever getting a callback decrease the longer my unemployment goes on.
It may be a bit late for this advice, but if anyone finds themselves unemployed the first thing you should do is form an S Corp, or at least a Sole Proprietorship if you don’t want to go that far. Do a couple of small projects even if it is just for family and friends, that way no gaps in your resume. Then if a prospective employer asks you about it, you tell them a little bit about the projects you did do and just say you were never able to quite find enough contracts to make it work.
That way no gaps in the resume. They may even like the initiative of trying to start your own business. Clearly, this works better in some industries than others. As an IT consultant it was pretty easy for me. I actually almost had enough work to make a go of it even.

Which is precisely my problem. I could easily apply at the restaurants and shops around my house for quick cash and part time work, but with a graduate degree and my resume, I’m insanely overqualified and over-educated for all of it. Anyone I’d apply to would know that the first “real job” that comes along for me, I’m out the door and they have to hire someone all over again. Why hire me when they can go with someone else?
At the same time, finding “real work” is a pain in the ass. It’s a double-edged sword.
Ever think of committing a “sin of omission” and leaving off the degrees? After all, resume writers tell people all the time to only list jobs you’ve done that are applicable to the one for which you’re applying. And if you can “pad” your resume with BS, like many we’ve seen, why not leave stuff off?
But I can understand why you wouldn’t want to be deceptive. However, when the money crunch comes, all bets tend to be off…

Not a bad idea. (And it’s best if they’d teach me how to hold that nail.)
Just need to figure out how to fit that in with the freelance contract work I’m finishing up this week, the part-time job, group therapy, the job search, and the other volunteering I’m already doing.
Hm, that looks like a passive-aggressive answer, and it
might beprobably is, but there’s a real time-management question in there.
To maximize the theraputic effect, just try to make the volunteering more physical/real-life/concrete. Helping an NGO with its database is very valuable for them, but might be too remote for your needs. Doesn’t have to be a Habitat house, but for now should be something that casts a shadow.

Then definitely don’t read this story - two bullets apparently hit a Chicago mosque. Police can’t definitively say that it was intentional since there is hunting allowed in the area, but they can’t rule that out either:
Worshipers praying inside the Orland Park Prayer Center at 16530 104th Ave. heard a loud bang and noticed debris on the floor under the gold dome just after 6 a.m.
Police arrived and noticed two small holes in the ceiling that they assume are bullet holes, although they aren’t 100 percent sure because bullets have not been found. The roof is too high for investigators to inspect it closely.
Police have not classified the incident a hate crime because they’re unaware of the intent. The mosque is located near a wooded area, and police believe incident could also have been errant gunfire from a hunter.
Police patrols have been increased in the area.
Around 30 people were inside the mosque when it happened. The congregation continued to hold prayer services Tuesday evening.

People in China are hopping mad at Malaysia now, claiming that Malaysians have been covering up the disappearance of the plane, or fouling up the investigation, or just plain lying about it all. There were about 150 Chinese on the plane, so you can imagine the emotional impact. But, as a bystander, I don’t understand the sheer rage involved, as if Malaysia itself was responsible for the plane disappearing.
The delay in reporting the satellite data set this rage-gasm off. People believe that there might have been a chance of rescuing survivors if the search-and-rescue teams had been looking in the right place. But I’m pretty sure there was not a chance of surviving a plunge into the ocean. Even if they survived the crash, the weather conditions and ocean currents would have doomed them within days.

AKA People Suck. Sigh. You know, the friend in our circle who has cancer had everyone rally around her. As we should have. She is not going to make it, her health is deteriorating rapidly. No one wants to talk about it, but I am already working to make peace with it, and I won’t be surprised when the phone call comes. This lady has other issues, including dependency on pain meds which started long before the cancer. As a result, she and I have had serious clashes, and I have to talk to her and work that out soon. I don’t look forward to it, but I feel like it has to happen.
On the flip side, because my issues aren’t visible, I got no support. Like I was making shit up. No one offered to help me by walking the dog when I was bedridden and sick from the fucking Paxil, no one brought food, no one called me. Especially once I opted out of medication, you’d think I’d kicked a baby or something the amount of shit I took for that. So, I told everyone I was extremely sorry for inconveniencing them (dripping with sarcasm) and they could be damned sure I wouldn’t fuck up their special zen ever again. I guess you find out who your friends are and aren’t when things go “there”.
What’s working for me is being outdoors (and this weather, were it a person would be getting an ass beating from me), walking my dog, writing and seeing a therapist as finances allow. I’m doing better, but it’s a process and I’m starting to be OK with that.

Some of the stalling in growth is due to cuts in government jobs across the board. I can see doing some streamlining and omitting redundancy, but last time I checked the numbers, it was around 800K. Hopefully some of those jobs will return.

In other news from China, here’s a possibly bogus bill for Michelle Obama’s family hotpot dinner in Chengdu that is sure to make the RWNJ circles in the States soon.
shanghaiist.com
As the article notes, the cellphone snaps show four Obamas at the table, but the bill indicates a party of 20. (20人) Perhaps the other 16 are staff and SS people, as there seems to be another table of Westerners nearby.
The tab is 1316 RMB, which is $212 for a party of 20, or $10.60 a head. Quite a bargain, but I predict the RW media will twist it somehow to show how Michelle’s squandered Our Tax Dollars.

In happier/funnier news, around 6:30am a LOT of people started tweeting pics from the UAE—most of them were gloomy & wet and I couldn’t figure out why they kept doing it and claiming how beautiful the UAE is.
After about a dozen tweets & half a dozen WTFs, it finally dawned on me that rain is a big event in a desert country. I remembered back in Texas picking up one of the Saudi women I knew when it was raining once and I complained about the awful weather—she said, “NO! It’s beauuuutifuuuul! It almost never rains where I come from! When it does, everyone runs outside to enjoy it.” Heh, context—it matters. For some, rain is a joyous occasion.
I had to giggle at their streets flooding because a little rain though. Kinda like what used to happen when it would snow in South Texas.
Here’s the hashtag they’re using: #IloveUAErainbecause

The families of the victims (and I’m going to call them victims since they are nearly certainly deceased as a result of a crash into a very hostile environment - the Indian Ocean) are focusing on those who are providing information. That’s why they’re attacking the Malaysian govt, even though it wasn’t their plane. Information has been lacking at any number of steps along the way, and there’s been plenty of conflicting information too. Can’t blame all of it on the Malaysian government, or even on the airline. But people want closure, so they’ll take it out on whoever is the public face.
Right now, that’s the government of Malaysia. That’ll shift to others in coming days and weeks. Heck, there’s a US law firm circulating plans to sue Malaysian Airlines and Boeing, claiming it was a defect or mechanical problem.

Interestingly enough, the Chinese government absolutely condemns rumors on the Internet … when such rumors don’t suit the government. China’s Internet censors are apparently doing nothing to quash the rumor-mongering about MH370, because it suits the Party to get the people angry about something other than the Party.

- You are already experienced official, moreover considering your young age. Would you like to make a party carrier simultaneously? Considering that the power in any country should ground on this or that organization-party structure. As earlier you held one of the leading roles in the organization “Revival”, which today has transformed into the Presidential political party.
- Today I have no plans to make a party career. Many of my colleagues, friends are the members of ‘Revival”. I share the approaches of the party towards reforms of economy and optimization of the system of state management. The Transnistrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs actively promotes its interaction with the institutions of civil society in various forms, and I’m sure that they with develop this dialogue also with parties.

You got to the naturopath/chiropractor because they supposedly can heal you.
You go to the attorney when it turns out that naturopaths/chiropractors are quacks by nature, and made your ailment worse.

Secret Service agents on Obama detail sent home from Netherlands after night of drinking
Three Secret Service agents responsible for protecting President Obama in Amsterdam this week were sent home and put on administrative leave Sunday after going out for a night of drinking, according to three people familiar with the incident. One of the agents was found drunk and passed out in a hotel hallway, the people said.
The hotel staff alerted the U.S. Embassy in the Netherlands after finding the unconscious agent Sunday morning, a day before Obama arrived in the country, according to two of the people. The embassy then alerted Secret Service managers on the presidential trip, which included the agency’s director, Julia Pierson.
SNIP
According to two people familiar with the Amsterdam incident, the three are members of the Secret Service’s Counter Assault Team, known in the agency as CAT.
The alleged behavior would violate Secret Service rules adopted in the wake of a damaging scandal in Cartagena, Colombia, in April 2012, when a dozen agents and officers had been drinking heavily and had brought prostitutes back to their hotel rooms before the president’s arrival for an economic summit.
Under the requirements, anyone on an official trip is forbidden to drink alcohol in the 10 hours leading up to an assignment. As members of the advance team for a presidential trip, the CAT members would have been called to duty sometime Sunday for a classified briefing ahead of the president’s arrival on Monday. Drinking late into the night Saturday evening and Sunday morning would have violated that rule.

I used the example yesterday about how a business owner could conceivably claim that insurance shouldn’t cover transfusions, vaccinations, or other procedures that are widely accepted and necessary, because of religious beliefs. It still stands.
And it opens the door to so much mischief that a religious belief exemption could undermine pretty much any law that they disagree with.

The longer video from the first account you linked to should be watched as well. It does not show tanks, just some MT-LB tracked vehicles that carry supplies or people and a whole lot of trucks. It gives an idea of the logistical effort needed to sustain that company of T-72B3s in battle.
And yes, it really does take 12-15 soldiers to sustain one T-72, and only three of them are actually crewing the tank. All of those trucks and MT-LBs carry the food, fuel, ammunition and spare parts needed to keep a tank company rolling.

That’s on top of the ongoing measles outbreak in the NYC metro area and a new outbreak out in California.
To say nothing of other smaller outbreaks across the nation.
All this is on anti-vaxxers. This is a wholly preventable disease through vaccination, which protects not only those who get vaccinated, but those who can’t because they’re immune compromised or are too young to be vaccinated. Now, those populations are at risk because the anti-vaxxers have gained undue sway.

If you’re paying your insurance premiums, then it’s not free to you or your dependents. That’s how insurance works. It’s a covered benefit that you’ve paid for.
Employers pay a portion, as part of a tax benefit to them (with additional special benefits to small corporations), and it is part of your overall compensation. It isn’t free birth control.

My cousin’s oldest is going in for alt-med hard, by way of promoting a border-line radical vegan* lifestyle. She’s already trotted out the standard “Kids receive too many vaccines” nonsense.
She’s unfortunately become the walking definition of the Naturalistic Fallacy: everything from Nature™ is perfect, and everything from a lab will kill us all.
What I get worried about is that her uncle (and one of my many cousins) and his wife just had a baby boy, born two months early. I’m genuinely concerned that Naturopath Cousin is going to convince the new parents to not vaccinate the baby.
I’ve been reading about this stuff for about 9 years now. To see it up close, however, is fucking scary.
*For clarification, there’s nothing wrong with going vegan. The stuff cousin’s kid has cited as proof that veganism is superior falls apart when you actually research it.

Obama’s original zinger in the debate with Romney was just a zinger for domestic political purposes. Yesterday’s follow up about “regional power” was the same. I’m old enough to remember the last time we tried this VR Goggles fad with games like Descent, and Kinect has thoroughly proven to be completely incapable of any compelling gameplay. For the OR to be of any value to me, it would have to be paired with a Kinect-style solution that actually, you know, worked worth a damn.

Shit, it was probably CNN. I joked on Twitter the other day that CNN now stands for “Crash News Network.”

20 people on board did work for a software company, Freescale Semiconductor. But they do a whole lot more than just military hardware:
Freescale Semiconductor has been developing microprocessors, sensors and other technology for the past 50 years. The technology it creates is commonly referred to as embedded processors, which according to the firm are “stand-alone semiconductors that perform dedicated computing functions in electronic systems.”
The technology is used in a variety of things, including smartphones, appliances and automobiles.
The company has more than 18,000 employees and operates manufacturing facilities, design centers and sales offices throughout the world. About 5,900 employees work in the United States; there are about 3,000 in Malaysia and about 4,000 in China.
The company had revenue of $4.2 billion in 2013. Before 2004, it was a subsidiary of Motorola.

The answer is that you don’t.
There’s a reason the divorce rate is around 50%. There’s a reason that Republican politicians will talk all day about ‘family values’ and then get caught off in the Andes with their mistress, or whatever. There’s a reason that Palin’s teenage daughter popped out a kid.
The people that insist on ‘family values’ and ‘abstinence only’ do not function in society. They are sociopaths in the very best case. They’re dysfunctional, fundamentally unhappy people that insist on spreading their misery around because the skydad commands it, and they were indoctrinated from birth that if they don’t follow the skydad they get to be tortured for all eternity.

The S.Ct. ruled that the failure to have health insurance is a tax, not a penalty/fine. That’s even though it operates as a penalty.
States have increasingly been willing to give opt-outs for any number of reasons for vaccinations, and until some major deadly outbreak occurs, this will continue. Because religious and philosophical exceptions for vaccines are fairly well-established and simply ending them by establishing a tax like that would strike many people as “tyranny”. Moreover, it would lose some left-wing support at a time when it would need unified support on the left since no Republican could vote for it, as the Obamacare mechanism is a tax not a fine per SCOTUS. And as a tax it cannot be voted in by Republicans who do not want to risk Grover Norquist’s ire.

Yep, soon as I started to read the story, it confirmed my suspicion…
According to police, Yon Pomrenze, 35, and Connor Fieldman Boals, 26, are charged with trespassing and disorderly conduct after they tried to climb a fence and sneak in through a gate.
CNN confirmed their reporters were in the area to do a story on the security breaches at the World Trade Center, and specifically “the notion that daredevils are being drawn to them,” but said it did not instruct them to gain access to the building, The New York Times reports.
They were going to show how the security was lax, the day after 2 major stories on lax security broke. Ya know guys… that might be the one time that the guards are MOST VIGILANT????
It’s like how here in Nashville, during the Anthrax scare, they did a big story how “Water Treatment Plant Not Secure”, and showed their reporter climbing through a hole in the chain link fence. Biggest problem, the water treatment plant they were showing was the WASTE WATER treatment plant. I highly doubt that terrorists wanted to poison our poo.

A US law firm said Wednesday it has initiated what it called the first civil legal proceedings over the crash of flight MH370 and said it planned to pursue lawsuits seeking “millions of dollars” for aggrieved families.
Chicago-based Ribbeck Law Chartered said it filed a court petition in the US state of Illinois targeting Malaysia Airlines and Boeing, blaming the two companies for the disaster.
“We are going to be filing the lawsuits for millions of dollars per each passenger based on prior cases that we have done involving crashes like this one,” its head of aviation litigation, Monica Kelly, told reporters in Kuala Lumpur.

Russia behaving ‘like an adversary’, says SACEUR
NATO’s response to Crimea must go beyond heightened patrols along its eastern border to embrace a more strategic repositioning of allied forces, says NATO’s top military commander.
This means changing NATO’s deployment, readiness and force structure on its home territory in response to a Russia that is now acting “like an adversary”, General Philip Breedlove, Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) said at the Brussels Forum of security and economic policymakers on 23 March.
“We need to think about the positioning of our forces within the alliance and the readiness of those forces so that we can respond to any pressure on the Baltics or anywhere else,” he said.
“Moving forces is not a trivial matter. If you allow your opponent to do this - position, prepare and provision his forces - but you don’t, then you are fatally behind. We now need to be positioned differently, and we have the forces to do that,” said Gen Breedlove, noting that: “it is very clear that Russia is acting much more like an adversary than a partner”.

In lawsuits like this, you’d bring all parties into the suit. You’d probably also bring in any subcontractors who might have done work on the plane, though as a defendant, the airline would bring a 3d party suit to bring the subs in. But that’s looking well ahead.
Boeing was brought in because they’re alleging a mechanical failure or perhaps design defect, even though there’s no evidence to indicate anything wrong with the plane at this time.
Getting the suit filed now can help avoid a statute of limitations issue down the road, but there’s little evidence to support any claims - for pretty much anything relating to the flight.
Oh, and bringing in a company like Boeing is all about seeking out the deep pockets should this eventually get settled or go to trial.

That particular vehicle is and SDKFZ-251 half-track, with an MG-34 with periscope sight. The sight was used to allow the gunner to lay down suppressing fire without exposing himself. The MG08 had such sights made for it during World War I and these proved successful enough that the MG34 followed suit.

Given how little ‘ghetto’ there ever was in Michelle Obama’s life, for which her mother and her late father must receive a great deal of credit for shielding her from the worst parts of life in Chicago. But even having said that, her father had job with the city and he made enough that Michelle Obama didn’t have to grow up in the ghetto.
This the racist tweet is an EPIC FAIL.

re: #434 Pie-onist Overlord
I’m not sure what is more racist; the content itself or the assumption that Michelle Obama is from the “ghetto”. Two-story houses in Chicago and vacations in “rustic cabin[s]” usually aren’t considered “ghetto”.

Knew it was an interior shot of a halftrack, but not sure whether it was a Sdkfz-251 or possibly the smaller Sdkfz-250. And obviously a MG-34 since due to the circular barrel shape as compared to the more slab-sided barrel of a MG-42.

Slight fix for you. The barrel on both MGs was rounded, but the square barrel jacket of the MG42 was open on the left side to enable easier barrel changes.
