By the way, when you change your password in Account Settings (or when someone creates a new account) there’s now a fancy password strength indicator to tell you how resistant to cracking your new password is.

It uses this excellent password strength estimator from the Dropbox people: github.com

So the bananas I bought at the store looked good but turned out to be overripe.

Looks like it’s time to bake some banana bread.

After last night’s documentary binge on YouTube, there continues to be progress. I’m thinking a Mythbusters marathon this afternoon (they’ve finally announced the next DVD set).

Oh, and Ranma 1/2 is being rereleased on Blu-ray. I ordered the first bit of that last night. That will also be fun to stitch to.

What you can’t tell is that the current sparkly thread is the DEVIL TO WORK WITH.

I honestly don’t get the appeal of the Kentucky Derby. Hours of lead-in for something that’s over in a couple of minutes. It’s like foreplay that doesn’t go anywhere. :-P

But at least the hats are nice. And mint juleps are a good thing. :)

The race itself is almost an afterthought

The lead up,, the socialization, the partying and yes, the “hats” as well as the venue makes it an amazing experience

One of those “Bucket List” type of things

Three dead, several injured in twin bomb attacks in Mombasa, Kenya

Three people have been killed and several wounded in two explosions in the Kenyan coastal city of Mombasa, police say.

Three people died in the busy Mwembe Tayari area of the city centre after a grenade was reportedly thrown into a bus that had just arrived from Nairobi.

In a separate incident at the luxury seaside Reef Hotel, suspects threw a bag with an explosive device, guards at the hotel said.

A roof of one building was ripped off by the blast and part of its wall collapsed.

The hotel’s management said all its staff and guests were safe.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility, although the city has been on high alert for possible attacks by Somalia’s Al Shabaab rebels or local Islamist militants.

Update on the Meow Machine:

The shelter called me this afternoon to ask a few questions. She is apparently actually a he and has now been fixed, but is still a little too fearful/skittish to be eligible for adoption, apparently. The woman I talked to said she’s fallen in love with him too so she was trying to establish what his behavior had been in our backyard to see if he really would be happy outdoors (they’d release him to a group that would place him in a feral colony).

She’s going to call me back with another update probably tomorrow morning at this point. I really wish it was going a different way and he was going home to a forever family, but if he’ll be happier as a feral kitty in a colony that is also ok.

He can’t come back here because we really would end up with an outdoor cat, I’m just that much of a sucker, and we’re probably moving in a year or so. I’m not sure moving an outdoor cat would work well.

If I was there I would probably feel different about the Derby. Watching it on TV, however, seems entirely pointless.

It’s just not my thing, I guess.

Hopefully he’s young enough that they can work with him and make him adoptable. Being fixed now is a huge plus, though he may feel otherwise.

I’m sure

When i was younger back in Boston I would go to Suffolk Downs every so often. My cousins husband has always owned a couple of racehorses so it was interesting having an inside perspective plus a reason to root

Then I got this job and we do a LOT of sports broadcasting for all the networks which has afforded me the opportunity of going to some of the big events, the Derby being one of them. i’ve gone three times now in the past 20 years and yes, it’s a LOT different being there AND being back at Suffolk Downs

Eugène Delacroix. Death of Sardanapalus. Oil on canvas. 12 ft 1 in x 16 ft 3 in. Louvre.

Diodorus says that Sardanapalus exceeded all previous rulers in sloth and luxury. He spent his whole life in self-indulgence. He dressed in women’s clothes and wore make-up. He had many concubines, female and male. He wrote his own epitaph, which stated that physical gratification is the only purpose of life. His lifestyle caused dissatisfaction within the Assyrian empire, allowing a conspiracy against him to develop led by “Arbaces”. An alliance of Medes, Persians and Babylonians challenged the Assyrians. Sardanapalus stirred himself to action and routed the rebels several times in battle, but failed to crush them. Believing he had defeated the rebels, Sardanapalus returned to his decadent lifestyle, ordering sacrifices and celebrations. But the rebels were reinforced by new troops from Bactria. Sardanapalus’s troops were surprised during their partying, and were routed.

Sardanapalus returned to Nineveh to defend his capital, while his army was placed under the command of his brother-in-law, who was soon defeated and killed. Having sent his family to safety, Sardanapalus prepared to hold Nineveh. He managed to withstand a long siege, but eventually heavy rains caused the Tigris to overflow, leading to the collapse of one of the defensive walls. To avoid falling into the hand of his enemies, Sardanapalus had a huge funeral pyre created for himself on which were piled “all his gold, silver and royal apparel”. He had his eunuchs and concubines boxed in inside the pyre, burning himself and them to death. […]

A proposed story plot: C&C set out from Seattle to Denver to share their expertise, but get lost in Utah on the way, but not knowing they are in Utah. Caught in UT, they end up in county jail, next to an Oathkeeper just in for hit-and-run, coming from the Bundy ranch. It is here that C&C learn the plight of poor Cliven, and once bail is paid drive south to enliven Cliven with some jivin’.

For those who missed it, a few days ago Chris Hayes published a long piece on why climate change won’t be mitigated because of the economic preciousness of oil, comparing fossil fuel use to slavery in a rather botched, overly wordy essay.

Anyway, you know it’s bad when Megan McArdle jumps on the bandwagon:

Eliminating fossil fuels doesn’t just hurt oil companies

The shorter McArdle: Yes, we know in the end that climate change will become onerous to the poor around the word, but we don’t want to be poor like them, so let’s not stop using fossil fuels.

Here’s some jQuery code that estimates password strength, and also makes sure a re-entered password matches the original. Uses the Dropbox password strength library. From the Account Settings page:

$('body').on('keydown keyup focus click', '#pass1,#pass2', function() {
	var pass1 = $('#pass1').val(),
		pass2 = $('#pass2').val(),
		info,
		strength,
		crackTime,
		score,
		scores = [
			'Extremely weak',
			'Very weak',
			'Weak',
			'Medium',
			'Strong',
			'Very strong',
			'Insanely strong'
		];
	if (pass1 == '') {
		$('#strength1').empty();
	} else {
		strength = zxcvbn(pass1, [
			$('#theuser').val(),
			$('#emailaddress').val()
		]);
		score = strength.score;
		if (score === 4) {
			crackTime = String(strength.crack_time_display);
			if (crackTime.indexOf('years') != -1) {
				score = 5;
			} else if (crackTime.indexOf('centuries') !=-1) {
				score = 6;
			}
		}
		$('#strength').html(scores[score]);
	}
	$('#matches').html(pass2 == '' ? '' : (pass2 != pass1 ? 'Doesn\'t match!' : 'Matches!'));
});
