Sarah Palin’s Hateful Word Salad of the Day

The right wing covers themselves in glory yet again
Wingnuts • Views: 30,032

Well, the Republican talking points on the release of Sgt. Bergdahl have obviously gone out; the entire right wing universe is now screaming in unison (as usual), and Sarah Palin joins the chorus with one of her trademark hateful word salads:

Commander-in-Chief’s Definition of “Honorable Service” Includes Anti-American Actions While in Uniform; He Just Destroyed Troop Morale

The Obama administration tells America this soldier served “with honor and distinction.” (http://www.weeklystandard.com/blogs/susan-rice-bergdahl-served-honor-and-distinction_794066.html)

No, Mr. President, a soldier expressing horrid anti-American beliefs - even boldly putting them in writing and unabashedly firing off his messages (http://nypost.com/2014/05/31/the-bizarre-tale-of-americas-last-known-pow/) while in uniform, just three days before he left his unit on foot - is not “honorable service.” Unless that is your standard.

Please use your White House Rose Garden to praise the truly honorable service of our good U.S. troops who were killed in their search for Sgt. Bergdahl (http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2014/06/02/we-lost-soldiers-in-the-hunt-for-bergdahl-a-guy-who-walked-off-in-the-dead-of-night.html). Praise the soldiers who fought with everything they had to defeat Islamic terrorists, those whom you just freed from prison. Our men gave all. Our surviving combat vets will forever live with the effects of the missions they willingly engaged in to protect you, our country, and certainly their brothers and sisters who are proud to wear the uniform.

You blew it again, Barack Obama, by negotiating away any leverage against the bad guys as these bad guys - Osama Bin Laden’s partners in evil crime - joyfully celebrate their “win” in the deal you sealed.

- Sarah Palin

Notice how she parrots one of the now-standard talking points about the soldiers “who were killed in their search.”

Six US soldiers died in the search for Sgt. Bergdahl, and that’s a tragedy. But how many American soldiers died searching for nonexistent weapons of mass destruction, sent to their deaths for a lie?

These people are despicable.

POW/MIA league: Bergdahl release sets troubling precedent

The POW/MIA community’s support for Bergdahl’s safe return has been unanimous, she said, but not without what she called “a universal concern about negotiating. … The kind of concession that would release known terrorists on an equivalency basis with a U.S. serviceman is repugnant to many.”

The release of five terrorist detainees in exchange for Bergdahl may create a situation that could “maximize the danger to people still there, as well as other places around the world,” she said.

Not all POW groups agree either

Another POW group, the American Ex-Prisoners of War, sent out a statement Sunday on Bergdahl’s release, calling it “proof of America’s unwavering commitment to leave no man or woman in uniform behind on the battlefield.”

The group, which traces its lineage to a group founded in 1942 to support U.S. prisoners taken by the Japanese on the Bataan Peninsula, also offered to assist the Bergdahl. In the statement, the group said it “will not engage in the divisive political arguments over the details of his release.” The group declined an interview request via email.

The point has been made that in the world of perpetual war that is only with terrorists and not nation states you are going to have to deal with them to some extent even if it is through a 3rd party or back room as Israel has done for many years.

54 lawhawk  Jun 2, 2014 12:36:51pm

Everyone says that they don’t negotiate with terrorists.

Except everyone does. They don’t do it publicly. They don’t highlight it.

But they do it through back channels. Third parties. And they do so with the best of intentions - to bring back kidnap victims, remains of those who died, etc.

Israel has a long history of doing deals with the likes of Hamas, Hizbullah, and other terror groups. I’ve been critical of some, particularly when it comes to releasing prisoners in exchange of the remains of fallen soldiers - not even living soldiers.

But we’re talking about a living Bowe Bergdahl here. He’d been in Taliban hands for 5 years. There had been multiple attempts previously to secure his release through back channels, and a military rescue mission was ruled out because of the high likelihood of casualties among the rescuers.

Bergdahl’s release doesn’t make US soldiers any more or less safe than they were 72 hours ago. But it does bring him home.

It also potentially sets the stage for getting the Afghan government and Taliban talking on how to reintegrate the Taliban in to the political process, which is something that the Afghan government wants to do since it would reduce the security pressure on the government. A stronger Afghan government would be in US interests, which is part of the reason this deal with through - it sets up a back channel approach that the Afghan government can use to get issues on the table and try to work something out - and that helps ease the US withdrawal.

All by itself, the chart doesn’t even disprove what it claims to disprove. it doesn’t take into account the fact that many soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan are surviving devastating wounds that in previous wars would have resulted in death. The chart takes no account of the severity of the injuries being treated, or how much it costs to treat them.

Now, I don’t know how significantly the conclusions would change if per-patient costs were taken into account instead of just the raw number of patients. But my point is that the people who drew up that chart and wrote that article don’t know either. Or they do know, but elected to leave that information out. Your choice.

I expect isolationists to be lukewarm at best about doing anything to retrieve a US soldier. That’s one reason isolationists suck and should not be elected to national office.

Isolationists are taking over the Republican Party.

Not TailGunner Cruz. He’s all in, as long as someone else takes all the risk.

CRUZ: I do not think the way to deal with terrorists is through releasing other violent terrorists. I mean…

STEPHANOPOULOS: But what if that’s the only way to get Bergdahl home?

CRUZ: It’s not the only way. We can go in and use military force, as needed, to rescue our fallen compatriots. But, look, Sergeant Bergdahl was fighting to capture these terrorists. Can you imagine what he would say to his fallen comrades who lost their lives to stop these people who were responsible, either directly or indirectly, for threatening or taking U.S. civilian lives. I mean, that’s why we sent our soldiers there. And the idea that we’re now making trades, what does that do for every single soldier stationed abroad? It says the reason why the U.S. has had the policy for decades of not negotiating with terrorists is because once you start doing it, every other terrorist has an incentive to capture more soldiers.

Has anyone done a “then and now” look at the usual suspects regarding this?

From what I gather, it looks like it was sort of known or suspected that Bergdahl was having issues (IMO, it sounds like PTSD, but who knows?) a couple of years ago, something speculated about a little while after he was captured. So what were these geniuses saying a couple years ago? Let me guess, hmm, Obama is a weak coward who won’t save one of The Troops because he hates America and wants us to fail. And he hates The Troops and hopes they all die. Am I close? Their words need be thrown right back at them. They can’t have it both ways, no matter how much they try.

They really are horrible human beings.

Therefore it is entirely appropriate to say that he has served his country honorably, in much the same that it is appropriate to say that you governed Alaska fairly and without abusing your power.

Oh no, wait, sorry, I forgot. An investigation did find you guilty of ethics violations while you were governor. My bad.

Cubans are eager to get in on some hot prisoner swapping action
Swap to free Alan Gross depends on Obama, “Cuban Five” spy says

The release of U.S. government contractor Alan Gross from a Cuban prison depends solely on the “political will” of President Barack Obama, a Havana spy who spent more than 15 years behind bars in the United States said here Monday.

To support that assertion, Fernando Gonzalez cited Obama’s decision to trade five senior Taliban members being held at Guantanamo for U.S. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, the only American POW in Afghanistan.

Gonzalez, one of five Cuban spies convicted by a Miami jury in 2001, was released from prison in late November and promptly deported.

Three of the “Cuban Five” remain jailed in the United States and Havana has suggested an exchange of its spies for Gross, who is serving a 15-year sentence in Cuba on a conviction for subversion.

“It’s obvious that the only thing needed is the political will on the part of the U.S. government to bring to fruition that exchange,” Gonzalez told a press conference on Monday.

The swap of five Taliban leaders for Bergdahl “is evidence that the only thing lacking is the political will of Obama to resolve this situation,” Gonzalez said.

Anthony Bourdain Blasts MSNBC’s ‘Pointless Shrieking’ to the Choir

Bourdain contrasted that attitude with the one he sees on networks like MSNBC. “I hate preaching to the converted,” he said. “A nightmare would be for me to sit in a room where everybody totally agrees with everything I say.”

“You know, MSNBC, it’s like every show they’re saying ‘look at what these stupid Republican morons did today,’” Bourdain continued. “I’m guessing there aren’t a lot of Republicans watching that channel. You’re not changing hearts and minds that way, it just seems kind of pointless to me, to shriek at each other that way, especially on issues like guns.”

“There’s some common ground to be had and I just don’t think that kind of shrieking is helpful,” he said. And if talking through the issues doesn’t work, he said he wished people who disagree would at least “have a beer together, eat some fucking barbecue, listen to some Lynyrd Skynyrd, and fucking relax dude, you know?”

Allen West Pretty Sure Bowe Bergdahl’s Dad Made The White House A Mosque

West says that he got an email from Clare Lopez, a “former CIA operations officer” who knows all sorts of stuff about Islam and the Middle East, and who is a personal friend of one Allen West. Lopez completely blows the lid off a huge cover-up, he says!

She emailed me this morning a very poignant analysis that only someone knowing language and Islam could ascertain. She wrote:

“What none of these media is reporting is that the father’s (SGT Bowe Bergdahl’s father Bob) first words at the WH were in Arabic - those words were “bism allah alrahman alraheem” - which means “in the name of Allah the most gracious and most merciful” - these are the opening words of every chapter of the Qur’an except one (the chapter of the sword - the 9th) - by uttering these words on the grounds of the WH, Bergdahl (the father) sanctified the WH and claimed it for Islam. There is no question but POTUS knows this.”

Folks, there is a lot to this whole episode — like Benghazi — that we may never know. And this is not conspiracy theory, it is truth based upon Arabic and Islamic dogma and tradition.

“During the argument, Murphy allegedly told Weinstock to take it outside. Murphy is accused of throwing the first punch and several others.

“There’s no word on whether charges will be filed.”

I hope like hell Weinstock files a Bar complaint and gets something started with Justice as well. This is entirely unacceptable behavior, both in his trying to pressure Weinstock and assaulting him.

It’s a good thing Weinstock wasn’t armed, felt threatened, and opted to stand his ground.

That’s just ridiculous on its face.

Anybody taken prisoner… the people who took him prisoner had the physical capacity to kill him instead. Knowing we’ll make a swap gives them incentive not to.

This is on par with the various Palestinian groups vowing to attempt to kidnap more Israeli soldiers. They’ve never made any indication that they were going to stop, or lessen, said attempts in the past.

Logic of the right:
Our hero’s fight to defend the freedoms we take for granted, like the ability to dissent and speak freely, to protest. But one is not a hero if one does so dissent, and one is certainly less worthy of our defense and protection if one does dissent. So basically the idea of freedom is worth protecting. But the exercise of it is itself so distasteful that it is not worthy of protection, but condemnation.
