As most of you know, I’m an aspiring poet. If may be so humble, I’m quite pleased with my latest work. Here’s a sample:
TYRANT
Sheets of cold rain pour down from the clouds,
covering the sullen, black dressed mourning crowds.
Row after row of fresh looking white crosses,
Has there been anything gained from these terrible losses?
It’s just one more ceremony, another farewell,
to more brave young men who couldn’t make it through hell.
You listen to the speeches and the notes of the dirge,
And through every moment, there’s not but a surge
Of emotion, of morals, of human expression.
Just an unstoppable combat obssession.
“It’s just part of the game” that’s what you say,
“we must keep fighting on until we win the day!”
We thought you would free us, we bought into the speech,
You made us believe a better life was in reach.
So we went to the polls and chose you as the one,
setting up a disaster that can’t be undone.
There can be no excuses now, don’t even bother,
You sealed our fate like lambs to the slaughter.
You think you’re a leader, you think you’re a man?
We should have stopped this before it even began.
The war drums were beating, you just had to listen,
you were committed to the cause, a slave to the mission.
“Get me the guns, get me the ammo,
get me the tanks, the helmets, the camo!”
There’s no peace in your mind, just perpetual war,
got to end all the conflict, got to settle the score.
There’s no second guessing, no restraint and no waiting,
there’s no need for diplomacy or endless debating.
You can find the rest at my blog.
Thanks in advance for dropping by.

Good on you Charles. There are plenty of places on the web to spout idiocy and hate if thats what they want to do. There are too few places to have a civil and impassioned discussion where the potential to learn something may actually exist. This is one of them. Protecting this community is a tough but worthwhile cause IMHO.

Why LGF is so cool, exhibit I don’t fucking know.
From “Frank Says” in the lower right of the website, as I see it right now (abridged).
The kids often found this to be an inconvenience, as they were fascinated by, and constantly perfecting new techniques for, The Manly Art Of Fart-Burning. Kenny explained to me that it was scientific - that it demonstrated (this is a real quote) “Compression, ignition, combustion and exhaust.” — Kenny & Ronnie Williams (later immortalized in “Let’s Make The Water Turn Black”).

First time I ever heard of “roof knocking.” Kind of weird. I think there’s a time and place for wars sometimes but not in this case. Not within a civilian population such as Gaza. No matter how hideous Hamas and other elements might be. It’s horrible. Was looking at some images earlier. We can’t bring back the dead. And yes, many have brought up Syria as a comparison but the difference here is that it’s Israel. We expect this kind of brutality from people like Assad, but not Netanyahu.

Israel is doing tremendous damage in Gaza, but also doing tremendous damage to their image. Netanyahu is a political animal. Both sides to this conflict are using domestic politics as the fuel for their policies. Bibi was roundly criticized during cast lead for doing a half job and losing Israeli lives in the process. In the south, they believed their govt left them as sacrificial lambs without protection from the rockets. He won’t let that happen again.
Hamas which was deeply weakened politically such that they actually entered into an agreement with the PA recently. Hamas seized on an opportunity to do the one thing they know how to do. Fight. To surrender without substantial change to the blockade would be disaster for them.

The borders have already been more or less agreed to already with land swaps etc. It’s not really that contentious of an issue. What’s holding up the deal is ownership of Al Aqsa, right of return, capital in Jerusalem.

re: #52 Islamo-Masonic Conspirator
MR. EARNEST: Well, what we have seen is we’ve seen that there were heavy weapons moved from Russia to Ukraine, that they have moved into the hands of separatist leaders, and that those separatists who are backed by the Russians were trained by the Russians to use those systems. Those systems include anti-aircraft weapons systems. And according to social media reports, those weapons include the SA-11 system.
What we also know is that the Malaysia Airlines jet was brought down by a missile that was fired from the ground. It was fired from the ground in an area that was controlled by separatists and in an area where the Ukrainians themselves were not actually operating anti-aircraft weapons at that time.
So that is why we have concluded that Vladimir Putin and the Russians are culpable to this tragedy. And I guess the other thing I would point out — let me look for my notes here — that I noticed a recent comment from Senator Chambliss, who is the vice-chair of the Senate Intel Committee. He’s a Republican and somebody who doesn’t often agree with the White House. But he did say, whether it was — this is a quote here — “whether it was the Russians themselves that pulled the trigger or Russian separatists trained by Russians, it’s all the same, and it all goes back ultimately to Vladimir Putin.”
So that is an indication that, based on somebody who has reviewed the classified intelligence assessments, that President Putin is responsible. And that is why we are coordinating with the international community on a response that targets Russia for their actions.
I don’t get how this is either an ugly or offensive generalization. Is the problem here that he’s saying “Russians” instead of the Russian govt./military?

Well, on the good side, the incubation time of Ebola is so short that the likely scenario is that people begin displaying symptoms during the flight over the Atlantic.

Ebola is not airborne (at least not yet) so it is less difficult to quarantine.
There was the Reston Ebola strain which is thought to have been airborne. The stuff of virologists nightmares.

re: #67 Teukka
Well, on the good side, the incubation time of Ebola is so short that the likely scenario is that people begin displaying symptoms during the flight over the Atlantic.
But it will still be a messy situation having the plane in quarantine, as well as the level of force used to isolate everyone until it is under control.
The incubation time of Ebola is - depending on the strain - anywhere from two days to three weeks. Mortality rates also vary. IIRC, the deadliest strain is Ebola zaire.

I don’t think a two-state solution is doable logistically. I’ve said the following before and never gotten a response, and I’ve never seen anyone else discuss it: Why not a three-state solution consisting of Israel, West Bank, and Gaza?
Then why not 4 ,, or 5 ,, or 7 ,,,
Negotiations for the two state solution have to be held with “A” faction representing Israel and “A” faction representing the Palestinian people.
In the past, that has been the PLO for the Palestinian people (think Rabin/ Arafat during Clintons presidency)
Who they send to the negotiating table now would be up to them. if they want to send a mission that includes the PLO, Fatah AND Hamas then the ONLY way I would accept that (if I were an Israeli negotiator) is if Hamas amends their charter to recognizing Israel as a legit state

Even the usage “the Russians” to mean “Russia” is idiotic (see the recent discussions about “the Palestinians” here), but Putin already is “Russia” in the political sense, so this juxtaposition is naturally interpreted as “Putin and the Russian people”, even if something else was meant.
I agree. If there’s any hope in reforming Russia long-term, it’s in reaching the population. It doesn’t help when we play the group blame game. It may seem kind of hopeless to penetrate Russia’s propaganda shield but hey, we actually have some experience in that sort of thing, we should be better at it.

If he just said “the Russians”, that would be more or less understood - we also say “Americans this” and “Americans that” (though I need to look up if that has ever been used by diplomats). But “Putin and the Russians” is a double whammy, because once you’ve named Putin - who, for all intents and purposes is the personification of the Russian power structure, and then say “the Russians”, you don’t expect “the Russians” to also mean “the power structure”. Even the context would not help much after translation, and these bits aren’t really ever quoted in context anywhere.

An Arizona brain scientist was arrested last week after two women said he pointed a semiautomatic rifle at them at an airport coffee shop.
Dr. Peter Nathan Steinmetz, a neuroscientist at Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, brought the AR-15 rifle slung over his shoulder to Starbucks inside a terminal at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

This guy is a brain scientist? Is he experimenting on his own?
Police told the newspaper that it’s not generally illegal to carry a semi-automatic rifle into the airport terminal, but Steinmetz was arrested because of “the way he was carrying it.”
The physician had bought a cup of coffee and then stopped in front of some gates in the non-secure area of Terminal Four, where he accidentally pointed the muzzle at a woman and her 17-year-old daughter.
The women told police they feared for their safety.
Steinmetz was arrested about 10:30 a.m. on two felony counts of disorderly conduct with a weapon.
He told officers that he had no other business at the airport besides buying a cup of coffee.
Because going to the airport is so much more convenient than the corner store.

My Grandfather perished in the Spanish flu pandemic of 1918,
Ebola is not airborne (at least not yet) so it is less difficult to quarantine.
My grandmother (then 10 years old) said the flu epidemic was the worst event of her life, which is saying a lot since she lived to be 105. Seven of her twenty-eight fifth grade classmates died, along with her teacher, a couple of cousins and many other people she knew. A lot of people thought it was literally the end of the world, that everyone might die within a few more weeks; as indeed they would have if the death rate had continued at its peak level. October 1918 still has the highest number of registered deaths of any month in US history, despite the population having increased 250% since then.

They couldn’t convince the Dems to convict Clinton, and there’s even less to go on legally against Obama.
OTOH, impeachment has helped Clinton over the years. After his DNC speech in 2012, Bill could have run again and won 300 electoral votes without trying.
He’s probably the most admired politician in the country. In fact, Romney was even trying to say his policies were more Clinton like than Obama. If they want to go on a stupid impeachment hunt. I say let them. That’s only going to make Obama more popular and them look more petty to others who aren’t part of their deranged base much like the Clinton impeachment did.
158 | HappyWarrior Jul 29, 2014 6:20:42am |
The founders clearly intended impeachment to be rare which is why until Clinton, we had one president impeached out of the then 42. The GOP since the GIngrich years has seen impeachment as a tool to go after presidents they don’t like. And yes I do realize Clinton lied under oath but the House GOP had no business having investigations to what President Clinton was doing with his sexual time.

The Clinton impeachment was inevitable. With all the time and money the GOP spent on obsessively digging up dirt on Clinton, they were going to find a reason, no matter how flimsy, to impeach him. As it turned out, impeaching him made him more popular, not less. Even back then people saw through the impeachment for what it was.
If the GOP is stupid enough to impeach Obama now, they might as well just give up on being a relevant party. We would have two Democratic presidents impeached in the last 20 years, and entirely for a political vendetta. It would show how craven the Republicans really are now.

The RWNJ talking heads know this. It’s why you’re seeing Beck and Scarborough and others downplaying impeachment talk even as Caribou Barbie makes money off the rubes who are salivating for Obama to be impeached and arrested.

That is probably one of the reasons McCain is speaking now on the subject even though he is using the term inaccurately. He does not want the process to get as far as the Senate since the process before that point will be massively full of partisan BS is make it very very clear going into the 2016 election how stupid the GOP is. And they will also obviously have full ownership of it as well.
Though I’m sure there will be voices throughout the process crying that it is “Obama’s fault” regardless. But FOX and the GOP have always been able to find water carriers. Plus it will let FOX, CNN, etc. do constant 24/7 talking heads on the process as it crawls along.

This is not true.
Since the ‘94 midterms, Republicans have accomplished the following:
• Two government shutdowns
• One impeachment, with a second being a real possibility
• Started a unnecessary war in Iraq that has massively destabilized the region
• Destroyed the economy by trying to fight two wars while cutting taxes
• Literally stopped working because a black man has been elected POTUS twice
And how have they been punished for their cravenness? By constantly being elected/re-elected to office. FFS, they essentially had control of all three branches of government from 2001 to 2007.
I’m sorry, I’m just tired of hearing how the GOP is Whigging out.
Because it ain’t going to happen.
Because a good chunk of Americans are too stupid or too idealogical to see how fucking crazy this party has been behaving since 1992.
I mean, look at the GOP now: unapologetic racism; guns; Bible trumps all; rape is not a big deal; women are second class citizens when it comes to their healthcare.
And every. Fucking. Prediction. Has them gaining even more power.
We need to dispense with the whole “GOP is heading towards irrelevancy” meme. It will not, and will never, happen, because the American people do not have the acumen to look at a group of people fucking over their nation and say “Ya know, having batshit crazy zealots run the country is a bad, bad idea.

Who needs a valid high crime when you have a bunch of crazy people saying that it’s obvious Obama should be impeached and removed from office? Case in point:
Larry Klayman: Obama And Putin Are Secretly Working Together To ‘Literally Destroy The World’
Obama and his leftist comrades in the White House and elsewhere in his administration - including the leftist, self-hating, Marxist Jews he surrounds himself with for cover - do not just sympathize with a Muslim caliphate, but also Putin’s march to reconstitute the Soviet Union by annexing Crimea, Georgia and the eastern if not entirety of Ukraine. How else can one explain Obama’s inaction to the Hitleresque actions of Putin’s Russia, which has been following the Fuhrer’s playbook to a T?
The bottom line is this: Obama and his enablers, including the National Security Agency whose spying on all Americans is meant to enslave us all to this treacherous and calculated tyranny, represent the greatest threat to the survival of our nation in the entire 238 year history of the republic. Obama must be removed NOW by any legal means, or we will soon perish not just as a nation, but also as individuals.

Israel is doing tremendous damage in Gaza, but also doing tremendous damage to their image. This invasion is similar to past conflicts, but the brutality seems much worse this time and the Netanyahu government seems more callous and uncaring. Some of the stuff that’s been tweeted by the IDF account has been indefensible, for example.
I see the IDF account as a propaganda piece, nothing more unfortunately.

Nope. An HRC win will finally drive home that they are not going to be a national party. When they see that they are stuck with the confederacy and the gerrymandered West, they’ll either moderate or fragment. This all happens faster and more surely if we hold the line on judicial appointments, education, and voter rights.

Nobody is saying the GOP is marching off of a cliff, never to be heard of again. What is being said is that the GOP is turning off younger voters and non-white voters more and more, and that as we move forward in time those demographics will become more and more important.
Indeed, demographically the GOP is living on borrowed time. They’ve so consolidated around their aging white base that it’s a matter of time before they become a regional party. Once Texas turns purple, it’s over for them as a national party. Without Texas’ electoral votes, they’ll never see the inside of the White House again.

I do understand and agree with the sentiment that a loss in 2016 would be devesating for the GOP but a lot of people thought they’d have a serious decline after 2008 and we saw the 2010 midterms. Now it is true that the GOP has alienated a lot of important voter blocks in the mean time since but all it takes is voters with a short term memory and a simplistic GOP sales push. I’m cautiously optimistic frankly.

I’ve been fairly silent on this since I have little good to say about it. I’m distraught at innocents getting killed. I am disgusted with most of the rhetoric since it is the standard hate-filled crap that just renews the cycles of violence and empowers those that advocate continued violence, wastage, and killing.
I recognize at least in theory the motivations behind the actions by the parties involved, but generally don’t agree with a lot of the policies. It is a quagmire, and I don’t see any realistic solution leading to peace coming up in either the short term of a few years, or possibly even the next decade. It’s the definition of insanity, with a lot of people who simply want to peacefully live their lives caught in the middle.

During the ongoing civil war in Syria, it is possible to view Syrians bombing the crap out of each other from the Golan Heights inside Israel. There is a morbid curiosity to what is going on.
Those in Southern Israel have to live knowing that they’re in missile range of Hamas attacks, just as surely as the IDF can throw its weight against Gaza. They too are in the cross fire, if not now, then at some point in the future.
Given Israel’s small population, those watching may also have family members active in the current Gaza operations, and they’re watching knowing that their family is directly in harms’ way.

The biggest problem with the youth vote is disaffection from politics in general, which is partially because of the sabotage from the GOP to the government and country in general. But in general, the data shows that younger people are more anti-GOP than anything else. They may not get out and vote, apathy may be a problem, but that still saps the GOP’s base as the older generation ages out of voting and the younger takes its place.

Hamas murders 25 Palestinians, blames Israel
Used cease-fire to execute suspected collaborators during ‘humanitarian’ truceTEL AVIV - Hamas killed at least 25 Palestinian civilians it suspected of collaborating with Israel, according to sources close to Gazan jihadist organizations.
The sources, close to both Hamas and the Islamic Jihad groups, told WND that most of the extra-judicial killings of suspected collaborators took place during a brief “humanitarian” cease-fire four days ago.
The so-called collaborators were accused of leading Israeli troops to smuggling tunnels and providing intelligence on Hamas’ infrastructure inside Gazan cities. […]

Alabama Officials: Coal Regulations Violate God’s Will
At their news conference today Cavanaugh and PSC commissioner-elect Chip Beeker invoked the name of God in stating their opposition to the EPA proposal. Beeker, a Republican who is running unopposed for a PSC seat, said coal was created in Alabama by God, and the federal government should not enact policy that runs counter to God’s plan.
“Who has the right to take what God’s given a state?” he said.
Cavanaugh called on the people of the state to ask for God’s intervention.
“I hope all the citizens of Alabama will be in prayer that the right thing will be done,” she said.

For some time now, I’ve been bribing my cat with treats to leave me alone to work. I give him 4 treats and he leaves me alone until at least noon. That is the deal.
This week he’s broken the deal. I give him 4 treats and he immediately jumps up on the table to pester me for pets. I think we need a mediator.

This.
It’s not that the GOP is going to disappear forever. It’s that the more and more extreme they get, they run the very real risk of becoming irrelevant nationally. The more that demographics change, the more that their appeals to the Angry White Guy fail.
They’ll never become irrelevant as long as they control the Supreme Court, and I don’t see that changing for a long time. With their pals the Supremes, they can gut campaign finance laws, gut the Voting Rights Act, make corporations people with religious rights and the right to spend as much money as they choose, provided they don’t get photographed handing over bags of money marked “BRIBE” to their favorite GOP politicians.
The GOP isn’t going anywhere, and if they get back in power, game over.

Seems legit.
It’s a good way of backing off without backing down on the issue, Karl Rove tried to warn the birthers that Obama was laying a “trap”, which he was.
He let the controversy stew long enough so that an awful lot of people grew so invested in the issue that they refused to back down even after Obama released his BC, all of which made them look even more pathetic.

Not just youth. I no longer watch politics on TV. I find it too loathsome; all gamesmanship, nothing remotely useful to any average voter. I hope kids stay involved via the web, but who knows.

House GOP cuts border funding bill
House Republicans will unveil a significantly pared-back emergency funding package of $659 million for the border crisis and are angling for a Thursday vote before Congress flees Washington for the August recess.
That figure is dramatically lower than the $3.7 billion that President Barack Obama originally requested from Capitol Hill to respond to the influx of unaccompanied children, primarily from Central America, at the Texas border.
It’s also a far cry from the $1.5 billion in emergency funding that was initially proposed last week by House Republicans.

Larry Pratt Blames Liberal Politics For San Antonio Train Station Murder
In an interview with far-right talk show host Stan Solomon this month, Gun Owners of America executive director Larry Pratt blamed the fatal beating of a man at an Amtrak station in San Antonio on the fact that San Antonio is a liberal area.
Upon learning that the murder had taken place in San Antonio, Pratt said, “Well, that’s disappointing to hear, because I guess in the city people are rather more liberal than they are in the rest of the state, because if that had been attempted in a medium-sized city, the outcome could have been quite different.”
“Well, there probably could have been 25 people in that Amtrak station who could have pulled a weapon and blown this son-of-a-Michelle to hell,” Solomon replied, apparently a reference to the First Lady, whom he frequently makes a target of puerile jokes.

What a doofus. The Texas concealed carry laws apply in San Antonio, just as they do in the rest of the state. The real preventative might have been an armed police officer on duty at the site, but it might well be that conservative sponsored cutbacks have made that impossible.

It still includes provisions that would change a 2008 anti-trafficking law, which would effectively allow the unaccompanied children to be more quickly deported — a revision that is unacceptable to most Democrats.
I hope it dies. I hope it hurts them to do nothing. And this:
The GOP border-crisis package will also boost the number of detention beds available for immigrants under custody, as well as double money to send National Guard to the Texas border in an effort to relieve overwhelmed border patrol agents.
is such BS. They can take some agents from NM and AZ where they’re bored to tears and harassing US citizens on the roads within 100 miles of the border.

re: #332 Dr Lizardo
Thing is, this proposal is essentially the same as all the other ones - the ones that failed. The wording is essentially interchangable, so the difference is that the parties must be sensing that there’s nothing to be gained from continuing the fight for now.
IMO, the Israeli strikes on the Gaza power station was overly harsh and doesn’t accomplish what Israel needs - which is to convince Gazans that Hamas is bad for their health. It reinforces the notion that Israel will collectively punish Gazans for the acts of Hamas. Media will pick up on this, and Hamas uses this in their propaganda, along with the body count.
But if this latest ceasefire effort holds, some Israeli and right wing pundits will think that this is what finally got Hamas to agree to a ceasefire, which is the opposite outcome from my view. So, the takeaway lesson for them is that hitting these kinds of targets will do what is necessary to stop the fighting.

It gets better. From Reuters:
The Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency is on pace to run out of money in mid-August, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection in mid-September, Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson has said.
If extra funding is not provided, the government will have to transfer money from other agencies to deal with crisis at the border, where 57,000 children traveling alone have tried to enter the United States from Central America this year.
The transfer of funds is known as “reprogramming” and can be carried out by the Obama administration without legislation.
Senate Homeland Security Chairman Tom Carper, a Delaware Democrat, was “deeply concerned” that forcing the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to move money around will affect other critical operations, according to a Democratic committee aide.
Border security will be hurt because DHS probably would need to reduce aerial support for the Border Patrol and put off buying technology needed at border points, according to Democratic and Republican congressional aides.
“We also understand that it would hinder some of the very functions critics of the supplemental (funding) seem to support: expedited detentions and deportations of undocumented migrants,” the Democratic aide said on condition of anonymity.

I don’t see the GOP disappearing forever either but I do agree with the basic premise that they have to adapt in order to survive. The demographics changes combined with changing attitudes make that pretty much a guaranteed truth.
Since they don’t believe in evolution they literally will refuse to adapt.

Rep. Gohmert: Obama Prejudiced Against Mexicans
Gohmert, a Republican, accused Obama of being prejudiced against Mexicans, who are immediately returned to their country when found entering the U.S. illegally.
“But if you’re from Central America, they’re like no, come on, we’ll send you all over the United States, we’ll let you stay,” Gohmert said. “You think some people in Mexico aren’t as afraid of the drug cartels as the people in Central America?”
He also noted that there are plenty of children around the world who are worse off than those in Central America. The Obama administration’s response to the crisis is evidence that they have a dog in the fight.
“This is a policy to transform America,” he said. “It’s not a policy to specifically help people. If it were then it would be more consistent.”

Operation Stonegarden (OPSG)
The intent of this $60 million program is to enhance coordination among local, state and federal law enforcement agencies to secure the borders with Mexico, Canada, and international waters.[…]
On July 15, 2010, Secretary Napolitano announced that 80 percent of Operation Stonegarden funding will now be directed to Southwest border states, and tribal funding will be increased by $8.2 million to $10 million in FY 2

I loved Camus’, ‘The Plague’. Metaphors aside, it was a keyhole into the kind of horror that is seeing loved ones die in such numbers that even the sensation of mourning is affected.
Thank you for that. We got through my mom’s funeral yesterday pretty well. It was cooler than usual, which helped once we got to the cemetery. My infamous brother Judas behaved more or less like a human being. I suspect someone took him aside and gave him the dire warning. I will never have to come face to face with him again. The other a-hole relatives were similarly well behaved. Decent people would take this for granted but this group has misbehaved before at funerals so precautions were in order.
I drove my Rolls-Royce rather than my usual Toyota and the obnoxious relatives seemed properly awestruck. Little do they know that I payed less than $13K for it three years ago. The reason for taking it was not to impress the goobers, though, it was because my mom really liked it and had asked me specifically to drive it to her funeral if I still had it when the time came.

I love being told to bust my ass so something can be ready in a week, only to find out the day before they don’t really need it.

With a 21 day incubation period, and the onset of symptoms being flu like,I disagree.

The last time I was in Orlando FL, I drove past a used Mercedes dealer. I stopped to take a look because it seemed so odd that these cars had the prices painted on the windshields, but where I was used to seeing 750 or 1100, these prices were 48000 and 61000! I wondered how many people would drive up to a used car dealer and spend 40 or 50 k.
Assuming you have a trade-in worth 35K…

Way OT but…
Boston’s Mayor @marty_walsh just named Ted Landsmark (pres of Boston Architectural College, attorney, civil right activist) to the board of the Boston Redevelopment Authority.
Ted Landsmark was the subject of this 1977 Pulitzer Prize winning photo titled “The Soiling of Old Glory”
The Soiling of Old Glory is a Pulitzer Prize-winning photograph taken for the Boston Herald American in 1976 by Stanley Forman.[1]
The photograph depicts a white teenager, Joseph Rakes, trying to assault black lawyer and civil-rights activist Ted Landsmark with a flagpole bearing the American flag. It was taken in Boston on April 5, 1976, during one in a series of protests against court-ordered desegregation busing.[1] It ran on the front page of the Herald American the next day, and also appeared in several newspapers across the country.[1] It won the 1977 Pulitzer Prize for Spot Photography.[2]
According to Landsmark, Rakes was swinging the flag and trying to hit him, not trying to spear him as it appears in the photo, and he narrowly missed. Landsmark was bloodied during the incident.[3] An examination of all the photographs in the roll Forman shot reveals that Rakes missed Landsmark with the flag. What appears to be a man trying to pin Landsmark’s arms behind him actually is anti-bussing activist Jim Kelly, who actually is helping Landsmark to his feet and later interposes himself between Landsmark and Rakes and the other protestors to protect the lawyer. Landsmark had already been knocked to the ground, losing his glasses and suffering a broken nose, by the time he got up with Kelly’s help and the famous picture was taken.[4]

I had to take the RR to the dealer in Dallas to get the AC fixed a while back. I wandered into the showroom and checked out some new ones. I don’t especially like them. They have that heavy, squashed down, small window look so typical of luxury cars these days, as though the owners are trying to warn the peasants out of the way while simultaneously concealing their own identities. The inside is really over the top, resembling nothing so much as the waiting room of an upmarket house of ill repute. For their part, the window stickers generated enough shock to comfortably light such a house for a while. I can see an ultra rich hobbyist like Jay Leno dropping that for a car if it has significant historical value, but there is no way I would pay that for a new car. I could buy an airworthy MiG-21 for less, not that I would have any use for it. It might be fun to paint it up in Obama campaign colors and logos and jet around driving RW conspiracy dupes crazy though.
