Maragold - Cry (Official Lyric Video)

A fascinatingly tricky and obtuse rhythm guitar pattern by Greg Howe makes this song a stand-out, along with Meghan Krauss’s knock-out vocals. Maragold is one of the best rock bands of 2014.

And now it’s back… Weird.

This is what I’ve found (although I’ve nowhere near the talent as you). I write different songs on each, play them differently, etc. I vacillate between them. I love my Telecaster, but I also love my big-body acoustic, for different reasons.

I imagine we’ll be seeing less and less of Charles, after all, he’s going to have to be on the run from the law, a fugitive from justice, an outlaw trying to avoid the long arm of the angry upChuck. Or possibly he’ll just sleep late tomorrow morning and call it ‘Good’

[Embedded content]

If that’s a reference to Ray Rice’s wife, then it would seem Josh has been hanging out with Paul Elam and his “Men’s Rights” crowd of haters:

Until recently, an online community of anti-feminist men (and a couple of women) who consider themselves “men’s rights activists” were content to perform most of their “activism” by complaining about women online and overwhelming the comment sections of any feminist website, rendering them virtually unusable for people who actually want to discuss feminism. But under the direction of Paul Elam for the site A Voice For Men, they’ve upped their game a bit in the past few months, holding a small conference to complain about how men are victimized by feminism and, of course, egging on Gamergate.

But now Elam and his crew at A Voice For Men have done something that’s outright shocking in its ugliness. It seems they’re trying to undermine a Canadian anti-domestic violence organization, the White Ribbon Campaign, by setting up a copycat website that’s clearly aimed at bamboozling people searching for the White Ribbon Campaign. The real White Ribbon Campaign is at whiteribbon.ca, where you can find information about preventing domestic violence and sexual assault, as well as order materials and hire speakers for community efforts.

Elam, however, purchased the URL whiteribbon.org and created a website with a similar aesthetic and the tagline “End Violence Against Everyone.” The clear hope here is to divert traffic and hopefully funds away from the White Ribbon Campaign, straight into the pockets of “men’s rights activists.”

On the website, you can read a bunch of articles pushing the claim that female violence against men is just as bad a problem—if not worse—than male violence against women. (This is a common claim used to deflect attention away from the realities of domestic violence, but it’s simply not true by any reasonable measure.) For instance, the site makes excuses for Baltimore Ravens player Ray Rice: “So Ray Rice was not guilty of beating up on a completely defenseless woman,” because she “was not some cowering woman in the corner covering her face with her arms.”

Another article describes domestic violence as a mutual behavior, almost a form of foreplay: “It’s impulse, reckless dysfunction that as many times as not has the two people in the bedroom enjoying make up sex not long after it is over, and then building the tension between them till it happens again.”

If Josh has been hanging out with the ‘Gamergate’ crowd, it would seem he’s become quite the CREEP.

It’s a reference to the Palin Brawl. Several witnesses reported that Bristol hauled back and punched the host in the face something like five times or more before he finally pushed her, causing her to fall down.

There is a thing called context. In case you are interested in what Marshall ACTUALLY wrote, you can read it here:

Sarah, Bristol & The Recurrence Of The Eternal Victim

He is taking issue with the Palin ladies trying to put themselves into the same category as Ray Rice’s wife.

Marshall says:

I think it kind of goes without saying that if news emerged that Bristol had been assaulted by a boyfriend or spouse or really anyone else, no one would be laughing.

His point is that it IS laughable for the Palin’s to paint themselves as victims in the drunken brawl they participated in. The police reports (featured on this very website) pretty much bear that out.

92 goddamnedfrank  Oct 24, 2014 9:19:13pm

Bloomberg got in on the retardation:

The conversation began in earnest when The Daily Caller’s Matt K. Lewis wrote that he’d been “mildly amused” by the “rich hillbillies” narrative of the fight, until he read a transcript of the audio of Bristol Palin’s account to the police. According to Palin:

A guy comes out of nowhere and pushes me on the ground, takes me by my feet, in my dress—in my thong dress, in front of everybody— “Come on you ****, get the **** out of here, come on you slut, get the **** out of here.” I don’t know this guy.

“IF this is true … then Bristol Palin was physically, verbally — and possibly even sexually - assaulted by a man,” Lewis argued. “Anyone who is concerned about a ‘war on women’ — but not disturbed by this report — is clearly biased.” Whether Palin’s account is accurate, or, as some witnesses have claimed, she threw the first punch(es) doesn’t change the fact that what she is describing is not funny.

It also doesn’t make it believable. She’s a second generation professional grifter, liar, homophobic bigot and self entitled brat. Also:

Other eyewitness recorded by police on the audio back up Klingenmeyer’s claims

So one can take Bristol’s unsubstantiated raw assertion as fact, or they can listen to the tape and apply a modicum of common sense.

In my arguments with my friends about Twitter and social media in general, I always argue that social media is what you put into it as much as it is what you get from it. If you put out what klys puts out on her Twitter - stitching pictures, kittehs, hockey games - then you can get reciprocal interactions with others and get a positive experience.

If you put out bullshit you’re gonna get bullshit from others.

Social media is an entirely new experience for humans, we’re still working out the kinks. And Twitter lets sociopaths like UpChuck do his thing. So…

Not ‘who’, Frank, the question is “What is Paul Elam?”

The answer is that he is a Men’s Rights Morlock (Morlockus DERPus Andro ), a species that was formerly occasionally found on LGF. At the time it was thought to be a species of Goof-Ball. Following the discovery that the species was in fact a type of Morlock, the few here were ripped to pieces and devoured by the Lizard Army. :D

re: #97 NJDhockeyfan

Bit o’ Elam trivia — Jack was an accountant in LA, nay not just an accountant but a pretty darn good accountant, and even rarer he was an honest one. Many of his clients were in the movie biz, and suggested him for bit parts. And that’s how the legend of Jack Elam began, and how he ultimately appeared in the greatest title sequence of all time (Once Upon A Time In The West), and stole an entire movie out from under John Wayne (Rio Lobo), not an easy feat though the movie was pretty lame. According to a Pyschotronic magazine, Jack stuck with his accountancy business throughout his illustrious career. As my pals in show biz say, keep your day job.

According to every witness except drunken Bristol all the guy did was push her away, after getting punched in the face about half a dozen times. He didn’t hit her, he showed enormous restraint applying by all accounts the least amount of force required to stop an ongoing assault on himself. So absolutely none of what you’ve said is even remotely applicable. I get that you want to de-link Marshall’s statement from all of that important context, because you’re a total fucking idiot and all, but Marshall was referring to a very well documented set of circumstances that in no way even remotely resemble a sexist attack on a woman.

Wanna-be politician, hold-over from the last elections, tries to save ALEC from those nasty “activists”:

Companies shouldn’t cave in to the demands of climate-change activists

By Carly Fiorina October 24 at 8:41 PM
The writer was chief executive of Hewlett Packard from 1999 to 2005.
In recent months, the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) has been under siege by an army of professional activists. Its weapons: radically oversimplified arguments and online pressure campaigns. Its victim: free and open debate. The attacks have prompted Google, among other tech giants, to part ways with ALEC, an alliance of state legislators who advocate limited government, free markets, and individual liberty. Unfortunately, such shortsighted thinking all too often shapes corporate strategy at a time when policies with enormous, and potentially damaging, economic implications are gaining ground.

ALEC and its supporters are not alone as the targets of such attacks. While climate change is these activists’ current wedge, they strive to drive business out of politics by any means necessary, including protests, online petitions, letter-writing campaigns, attacks on secondary targets or membership organizations and shareholder resolutions.

This month, a climate-related pressure campaign by Greenpeace forced the Danish toy-maker Lego to end its relationship with Shell. Too often companies succumb to the interests of a small minority of well-organized, professional activists intent on chilling speech and marginalizing the voice of business and job creators in U.S. society. The goal of these activists is to have business bow to their ideological will and reshape companies in their desired image. Their attacks on businesses’ protected speech and political participation are intended to sideline the entrepreneurial perspective and silence the opportunity for nuanced policy discussions.

[…]

Poor little ALEC, their job creator-ness and free speech are being impinged.

MSF/DWB calls for immediate action on Ebola, and hopes to get its workers enrolled in the vaccine trials that are set to begin later this year. They’re the ones getting hit hardest by the disease, all while trying to help those stricken with Ebola survive this disease that has shown itself to be survivable when care, facilities, and access to medications is up to Western medical standards.

“The message we heard from WHO that the people fighting the epidemic will be among the first to test Ebola vaccines and treatments is exactly the one we needed to hear,” said Dr. Bertrand Draguez, medical director for MSF. “Now urgent action is needed to get those promises delivered in West Africa as soon as possible. This needs to be followed by massive roll out of vaccines to the general population once their efficacy is proven.”

“It crucial that people from Ministries of Health, aid agencies, and communities who are holding the response to the epidemic together, and ensuring access to essential health care, are protected,” Dr. Draguez added. “Resources everywhere are stretched to almost breaking point; everyone is at capacity, but it is extremely hard for the people treating and sustaining the response to do it with absolutely no safety net. Safe and effective treatments and vaccines could offer just that.”

151 wheat-dogghazi-bola  Oct 25, 2014 6:00:15am

The BBC interviewed one of their Media Action journalists based in Liberia today. He says one of the difficulties in dealing with the disease is the lack of education in West Africa. People think it’s bad magic, demons, punishment from God, a trick by westerners or national enemies — all sorts of wacky stuff. So, getting people to understand the importance of proper hygiene, bio-protection, isolation and quarantine, etc., slows down the efficacy of any ameliorative efforts.

Adequate education and health systems need to be place everywhere in the world — that’s the message people need to hear.

re: #151 wheat-dogghazi-bola

Absolutely. And sociopaths like CCJ think nothing of spreading the fear-mongering rumors that MSF is the one responsible for the outbreak, which repeats and feeds into the sentiment in some parts of the world where public health workers are attacked for trying to educate, let alone provide vaccinations, for communicable and entirely preventable diseases.

Nigeria is one of the countries where polio persisted into the 21st century. In 2003, polio vaccination efforts had to be suspended after unfounded rumors that vaccines were causing diseases - allowing a new outbreak to occur there. And the country is still one of the places where polio is still endemic and new cases are reported even this year.

But their vaccination efforts in recent years also helped the country track down and stop the Ebola outbreak there in its tracks by using the skills and methods from the polio vaccination efforts when cases were identified.

But Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone are countries that have a fraction of the medical infrastructure of even Nigeria - let alone the US or Western Europe.

The thing that’s galling to me is that people like CCJ have no empathy for addressing this public health crisis - blaming those that are providing care for Ebola patients. And there needs to be serious pushback on this - holding these nitwits accountable for their irresponsible and malicious statements.

He puts people in danger with his statements. There’s no way to sugar coat that.

So, politifact rates the widely noted statistic that there have been 74 school shootings since Sandy Hook as mostly false (a number that has gone up since June 2014).

How they arrive at that conclusion is as illuminating as the statistic they claim to debunk.

They claim that the reason it’s mostly false is because people think of school shootings as being the rogue gunman going on a spree inside a school and shooting people as they go about their business.

That happens in some of the cases, but not all. Therefore, they rate it false.

The problem with that simplistic analysis is that the fact is that firearms are on school grounds far too much, and people are getting killed under circumstances that don’t rise to Sandy Hook massacre levels. It doesn’t make it any less disturbing.

Heck, much of the focus of the gun rights folks pushing for more guns and security on school grounds is to address all bad actors that come on grounds with guns - things like secure entry area, armed guards, etc.

Diminishing the fact that school shootings includes suicides, gun fights that spill over from the surrounding neighborhood into the school grounds, or took place after “school hours” ignores the prevalence of guns in and around schools.

It reeks of the mindset that there’s an acceptable body count.

I’m going to partially disagree, mostly because of public perceptions. For the American public, “school shooting” means an ‘active shooter’ who attacks the school to kill those he thinks have wronged him or to kill at random until taken down.

A gang fight with guns that spills onto school grounds and results in death there is properly seen (in my mind) as a gang killing, which is a different type of crime than a ‘rampage mass murder’. Politifact surely has a defensible case for separating crimes that differ greatly in origin, motives, and targeting.

Might be too late to make sense of the ‘school shooting’ term. (Wrecking the definition of words is a common enough bit of ideologue rhetoric, particularly on the Right at the moment.) There needs to be a useful distinction between the janitor shooting himself in the boiler room at 10PM and a gunshot in the hall during class change.

169 ObserverArt  Oct 25, 2014 7:22:38am

Morning all.

A question about that Politifact school gun shootings thing. Are not gangs on school property a school issue? Then shouldn’t a gang member that decides to shoot a rival or rivals at school be a school problem? If so, then it is a school shooting.

I think the word ‘gang’ is giving them an out that really isn’t there.

Wasn’t part of the Columbine shooting due to the two shooters going after kids they saw as the ‘cool kids/jocks’? That means they decided to see those kids as a faction. Cannot a faction be seen as a ‘gang’ in a way? It is an us versus them kind of thing. I do believe many school shootings come from a faction being seen as an enemy to the shooters.

Seems like needless splitting of hairs. I also wonder if there isn’t just a touch of bigotry involved in the thinking. You know, gangs are ‘those people’ and that stuff is in the ‘hood, or something.

Pro gun control numbers seek broad definitions so as to not miss any examples that even might bolster their case. Anti gun control efforts seek a hundred classifications to specify beyond the medias ability to confer well. That’s a deliberately kind description of course some would say understated. Politifact is in the business of splitting hairs.

A bullet can go a mile. School grounds are often defined way beyond the fence. For the purpose of business permit zoning and exclusion zones for convicted predators or extra penalties in the war on drugs. That’s a lot of real estate when you look at a city map that shows all the schools and the usual 1000ft radius administrative influence area. LAUSD is about 1100, who knows how many private / religious schools there are.

But I just want to say screw all of that. We must all agree we can halve the numbers five times over and it’s still too many. Look to how to make that difference that is the heart of the argument anyway. All else becomes noise.

re: #169 ObserverArt

Wasn’t part of the Columbine shooting due to the two shooters going after kids they saw as the ‘cool kids/jocks’?

That means they decided to see those kids as a faction. Cannot a faction be seen as a ‘gang’ in a way? It is an us versus them kind of thing. I do believe many school shootings come from a faction being seen as an enemy to the shooters.

Seems like needless splitting of hairs. I also wonder if there isn’t just a touch of bigotry involved in the thinking. You know, gangs are ‘those people’ and that stuff is in the ‘hood, or something.

No— that’s not true at all about the columbine shooting, and I would also take issue with some of your other remarks.

I would recommend the book Columbine, by Dave Cullen. But you can also read this piece he did for Salon called The Depressive and the Psychopath:

Five years ago today, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold murdered their classmates and teachers at Columbine High School. Most Americans have reached one of two wrong conclusions about why they did it. The first conclusion is that the pair of supposed “Trench Coat Mafia outcasts” were taking revenge against the bullies who had made school miserable for them. The second conclusion is that the massacre was inexplicable: We can never understand what drove them to such horrific violence.

But the FBI and its team of psychiatrists and psychologists have reached an entirely different conclusion. They believe they know why Harris and Klebold killed, and their explanation is both more reassuring and more troubling than our misguided conclusions

The Columbine shooting had nothing to do with gangs, or bullies, or any of the things mass media churned out at the time. The book Columbine is fascinating— I highly recommend it.

The problem with getting lost in the minutiae of what is or isn’t a school shooting is that we forget that it’s a fucking school shooting.

It’s important to understand all the reasons of why they happen, but one thing is common in all school shootings. Guns.

Control them, and work on all the causes of school shootings.

Thanks for the link. I am reading it now. I’ll look for the book too.

If you note, my comment was formed as a question as I really was not sure of the Columbine motivations (plural).

I am not trying to act as any kind of an expert on school shootings, as they are most likely caused by many factors that are both school, home, neighborhood, background, group and individual related.

If one wanted, they could reason there are no school shootings. It could be said they are all mental health or societal related and the school just happens to be the area they happen at.

My point was simply if they happen on school grounds, they are then school related. To break them out further is the splitting the hairs point.

So, are there school shootings or are there just shootings? Does it matter where it happens at all?

Well yes, if you have to run security for a school, then no matter what is behind the shooting, it is a danger to all those at the school.

What a freaking mess the whole thing is. It is damn frustrating. As I said last night in a comment, our society wigs out about Ebola and wants it stopped yesterday. They want the president on it. Guns…they don’t seem to want to prevent anything and they sure as hell don’t want the president on it. It makes zero fucking sense to me.

The tenor of WaPo’s editorial page has led me to conclude that the paper is involved in a years-long campaign to make itself attractive to Rupert Murdoch. That paper’s choice of Carly Fiorina to write an editorial on any subject other than FAIL seeems to bear out my conclusion. Fiorina was forced to resign as the CEO of Hewlett-Packard after a series of disastrous decisions, She then went on to become a McCain campaign staffer and a vigorous defender of McCain’s choice of Sarah Palin, Her last grand gesture was a failed campaign for the Senate seat then held by Barbara Boxer. The high point of that fiasco was the unintentionally hilarious “Demon Sheep” ad.

That’s pretty much how racists and their conservative buddies roll these days.

And I think at this point, theres really no other way to describe CCJ except as a sociopath. There’s a level of pure malice there that even Limbaugh or Jim Hoft aren’t reaching.

OMG! the fear, the hype —I’m so tired of it.

198 FemNaziBitch  Oct 25, 2014 10:18:27am

re: #153 Vogon Poetry

Polio schmolio —we only care about the current drama/scandal

Two female victims — identified as Shaylee Chuckulnaskit and Gia Soriano, both 14 — suffered head wounds when Jaylen Ray Fryberg opened fire in the cafeteria at Marysville Pilchuck High School in Marysville, police and hospital officials said. Fryberg killed a female student, and died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to authorities.

The two injured girls are in critical condition and “being monitored moment by moment” at Providence Regional Medical Center in Everett, said Joanne Roberts, the hospital’s chief medical officer. “The next three days are going to be crucial,” Roberts said.

The girls’ families are by the patients’ bedsides, and “just grieving,” Roberts said. “We’ve seen tears, we’ve seen anger,” she added. Soriano’s family said in a statement that they are in “shock.”

Two male victims, ages 14 and 15, are being treated at Harborview Medical Center Seattle. The 14-year-old suffered a jaw injury and was in serious condition Saturday, said hospital spokeswoman Susan Gregg. The 15-year-old was in critical condition with a head injury after undergoing “extensive surgery,” hospital officials added.

The boys have not been identified, but they were described as cousins of the shooter by Don Hatch, the grandfather of one of the victims. “They’re just three complete buddies, and they couldn’t be closer than three brothers,” Hatch told TODAY of the gunman and the two injured boys, who are in intensive care.

Wood for the campfire: damned if I know. It’s campfire wood. It burns. OF COURSE, there will be S’mores!

Mesquite charcoal for the grill.

Marinade for the tilapia: olive oil, lime juice, tequila, chili powder, cilantro, and jalapeno. This is for tacos to be topped with spicy slaw: shredded cabbage, sour cream, chipotle hot sauce, chili powder, cumin, and lime juice. Also grilled red bell peppers, freshly picked.

Rice side: buttered brown rice with chopped tomatoes, onion, cilantro, and black olives.

Also on the menu: jumbo shrimp, freshly caught, on their way from Galveston with one of my guests. They will be cleaned, skewered, grilled and brushed with garlic butter.

Dessert (in addition to S’mores): Pepperidge Farm Milano cookie cake with birthday candles for a guest who will be turning 80 in a few days. He’s bringing the herbal party supplies. LOL

No mistakes. I stand by my comments , it was a disgusting comment about women. If you support violence against women if they throw the first punch then you have a problem.

It was a comment about the Palin kerfuffle, not about ‘women.’

And who punched Bristol, or how was his comment supporting violence against women?

Not to mention twisting the exchange to say Marshall’s position justified Ray Rice knocking out his fiancee. That’s a repugnant twisting of the two situations to score points in some weird battle of equivalencies.

Who said anything about supporting violence against women? This site is about as anti-violence against women as any around, and I think you know this. If you disagree, maybe you can give some examples of posts and comments that were misogynist. I doubt you’ll find many.

This is about the Palins being compared to a woman (Ray Rice’s girlfriend, now wife) whose head was bashed in, knocked unconscious and could have died from the head trauma of having her skull rammed into a metal railing. Does that sound anything like the Palin brawl? If you think so, you might want to check out the facts of the thrilla in Wasilla. Because if you did, you’d see how specious and self-serving the comparison is. Life isn’t all black and white. Try to understand context and accept shades of gray. Though not necessarily all 50 of them.

Bristol wasn’t “punched”, nor was she “held down on the ground until someone removed her from ‘the situation’.”
She was a drunk woman who couldn’t keep her stories straight with the police immediately after the incident and now, six weeks later, she suddenly “remembers” that she was “sexually assaulted” by the guy who owns the house where the party was held, a party that she was NOT invited to attend.
At MIDNIGHT, she was a sloppy crying drunk with her five-year-old son in attendance (you can hear him crying on the police audiotape).
Bristol and Sarah Palin do an extreme disservice … no, they make a freaking MOCKERY … of real violence against women.

Bristol and the rest of the Palins were drunken party crashers looking for a fight and their attempts to portray themselves as “victims” is not only laughable, it’s pathetic.

And I say all of this as someone who has family members (male and female both) who have alcohol and substance abuse issues who have been pulling this exact same “I’m the real victim here” shit for decades.

Bristol hit Korey (the homeowner) at least half a dozen times before he shoved her. I’m here to tell you that “turn the other cheek” gets old, and I don’t care if it’s a sloppy drunk woman being an asshole who gets her ass handed to her when enough is goddammit enough.

Being a woman doesn’t give me or any other woman free reign to beat on a man or any other person without consequences.

I’m still just stunned at the hubris of this family claiming they are the victims after listening to the police tapes.

Along this same vein… I really dislike the whole “you should never hit a woman” meme. It’s sexist as hell. Women are not fragile flowers who need white knights standing at their sides every minute for protection.

What we should be teaching our children is “never hit ANYONE.” It is no more appropriate for a woman to hit a man than a man to hit a woman.

Man Charged with Hate Crime for Vandalism at Lombard Synagogue

A $5 million bond has been set for a 40-year-old Westmont man after police said he vandalized and left graffiti of an “anti-Semitic nature” on a Lombard synagogue.

John White, of 13 Tartan Lakes Drive in Westmont, appeared in bond court Friday afternoon where DuPage County Judge Michael Wolfe ordered a $5 million full cash bond in the case.

White is charged with hate crime, a class 3 felony; criminal damage to property, a class 3 felony; possession of a firearm without a FOID card, a class 3 felony; and institutional vandalism, a class 2 felony, according to a DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office press release.

In the wake of this week’s attacks in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que., and Ottawa, the Conservative government is looking at bringing in new laws to crack down on pro-ISIS sentiments like those posted to Quebec assailant Martin Couture-Rouleau’s Facebook page, CBC News has learned.

The move to tighten Canada’s Criminal Code is expected to come as part of a sweeping overhaul of Canada’s national security regime.

Earlier this week, RCMP Supt. Martine Fontaine told reporters investigators simply didn’t have enough evidence to arrest Couture-Rouleau, despite concerns over his possible radicalization.

“We did not have enough evidence to charge him and to detain him,” she noted.

She said investigators followed up with his family and the imam at his local mosque, but had no reason to think or evidence to show that he would commit a crime on Canadian soil.

No, actually - it’s because with more than 10 million comments, allowing a search through all of them takes forever and sometimes causes the database to lock up. (I may experiment with increasing that limit now that we have faster servers.)
