Breaking: Suspect Arrested in Houston Islamic Center Arson

Darryl Ferguson named as suspect
US News • Views: 26,771

Just coming across the news sites now — a suspect has been arrested in Houston in connection with the arson attack against an Islamic center.

Houston arson investigators have made an arrest in the early morning fire Friday at an Islamic center on the city’s southeast side, fire department officials said late Monday.

Darryl Ferguson, 55, of Houston, has been charged with felony first degree arson for the fire, according to HFD investigators.

The arrest was announced at a 6 p.m. news conference at HFD’s arson headquarters.

Investigators say the suspect “rolled up on his bicycle” to speak to them about the fire during an on-scene investigation Monday.

UPDATE at 2/16/15 5:01:28 pm by Charles Johnson

More details at ABC13: HFD: Arrest Made in Islamic Center Fire in SE Houston.

The Houston Fire Department says the suspect, 55-year-old Darryl Ferguson, was charged with first-degree felony arson in connection to the Friday morning fire at the Quba Islamic Institute.

Officials say Ferguson approached detectives on his bike as they were canvasing the area around the center following the fire; Ferguson asked if they’d like to talk to him, so authorities invited him back to their office for voluntary questioning. Officials say it was then he admitted to starting the fire.

Officials say Ferguson, who lives near the center, has a previous criminal history.

Investigators confirmed last week an accelerant was used to spark the blaze, but still haven’t said the motive behind the fire.

I suppose it’s possible it was an accident, but that would be a hell of an accident - the place was totally destroyed.

5 Charles Johnson  Feb 16, 2015 4:49:41pm

And apparently an accelerant was used. That doesn’t sound like an accident.

At least we can be 100% certain this had nothing to do with the suspect hating Muslims as Rush Limbaugh and Bill Maher have both assured the public that there is no such thing as Islamophobia.

An old white guy with a few priors burns down an Islamic Center. Which means the wingnut press will write him off as yet another “lone wolf” and continue on the narrative that the biggest threat to America is Muslims.

re: #26 Justanotherhuman

Millennials (also known as the Millennial Generation or Generation Y) are the demographic cohort following Generation X. There are no precise dates when the generation starts and ends. Researchers and commentators use birth years ranging from the early 1980s to the early 2000s.

I’m generally considered either the very end of Gen X or the very beginning of the millennial generation (born 1981).

I came to the site the next day and have been reading pretty much daily ever since. The site has changed so much. I came to it in the early days for a “conservative” approach to things. There were many posts in the mid-2000s that I vociferously disagreed with. This once was a place that welcomed Pamela Geller and Fjordman.

Over the many years, Charles has proven himself good people, and he runs one of the best general interest sites around. I now come here for many many points of view: liberal, conservative, religious, non-religious, and the magnificent acoustic guitar. Oh, and snark. Lizards are sooo good at snark!

Hell, given his age and financial situation, he could have set the fire so he ended up in prison just to get medical attention for all we know.

This is completely true. The modern American Conservative is not a conservative in any way. Conservatism implies a certain skepticism - the principle that new ideas are not necessarily improvements, that they need vetting and fact-based analysis before adopting. Modern American Conservatism is a radical anarchist cult based on nothing except hate - of liberals, poor people, and anyone not on their team. It is anything but conservative, because there is no skepticism at all - they will believe absolutely anything if it fits with their prejudices.

Listen, I’m all for incremental change on things. Coloradans put legal cannabis to a vote three times, the third time was the charm. Over the years from the first ‘No’ vote to the final ‘Yes’ vote - a period of about a decade - folks in Colorado talked about it, debated it, drew blueprints, studied history and the law. And guess what, in 2014 Colorado sold $700 million worth of weed in a regulated market. The evolution of ideas in action.

Only if you live in the states. Ask anyone from England about shoegaze and they’ll lecture you quite a bit on that.

Just to give you an idea, The Stone Roses, while not a shoegaze act, but nevertheless an act that was huge in UK but garnered one Billboard 100 hit (Love Spreads), managed to sell out three back-to-back-to-back stadium shows in Manchester 3 years ago on the first dates of their reunion tour.

And they were the headliner for Coachella 2 years ago, along with Blur.

Looking at UpChuck’s latest attempt to smear a victim., I see that he has misunderstood the court documents cited in his award-winning research and mistakenly understood 12 entries to mean 12 citations, when in fact there are only six unique citations referenced.

Checking the case numbers:
9102008713102I —> 9102008713102IF
9102009007176I —> 9102009007176IF

I’m assuming that I is initial and F is final, and the R means resolved. There are also only six unique citations.

The website he used is courtsentry.com, which does not include details for “local charges,” which I assume include infractions like littering and parking violations.

The vaccination language received a good deal of attention from critics who said its inclusion sent the wrong message at a time when Colorado ranks 45th in the nation on vaccination rates for children 19-35 months old.

Sen. Vicki Marble, a GOP leader from Fort Collins, said opponents of the bill in an earlier committee “demonized parents.”

So shirtless guy died? :( Yes, great melody.

Shirtless guy (the great James Dean Bradfield) is still there.

It’s an interesting story - Richey Edwards checked out of his hotel one day in 1995 and never returned. He was delcared ‘presumed dead’ in 2008.

To the band’s credit, they put Richey’s share of their royalties in escrow, not knowing if he’d ever come back, and they actually sought Richie’s family’s blessing in carrying on the band while his status was still just ‘missing.’

Edwards disappeared the day before he and Bradfield were to come to the US for a press tour. I can only imagine the trajectory the band would have taken had he gone through with the tour. They could have been huge.

Not a zombie, though, right?

Know Fact: Zombies can’t ride bicycles. They don’t have the sense of balance. That’s the source of the old saying “If it rides, it’s alive”.

Music from 50 years ago is still popular today. But 50 years ago we would have laughed our freaking heads off at the music of the 1910’s. The Cake Walk? The Turkey Trot?

I would give my favorite band of the 80-90’s to REM.

I’ve always loved this song of theirs.

It’s 38 degrees outside. And raining. Nothing compared to what many of y’all have going on outside, I know. But it’s fucking COLD for us who have thin sub-tropical blood… and no coats, hats, or boots. Not that big of a deal here neither except that I gotta take the dogs out for walkies and I DON’T WANNA!

My boys better pee quick or hold it cuz it’s gonna be one quick outing.

My demographics: 42 years old, white, married. Texan. Geek by trade. An independent voter but I prefer logic, reason, humor, and intellect in my politics so I’ve voted for Dems most elections.

Music? I traveled a different path. 80s New Wave and Goth. Tried, really tried to love Pearl Jam and grunge but NIN and Ministry and Skinny Puppy were just where I fit.

Oh, and my undergrad majors were cognitive psyc and women’s studies. I have a very brave husband.

Your reality does not exist, it is a manifestation of the subjective interpretation of your senses.

Or something.

Maybe because the shootings happened within the USA and were done by an American citizen against other citizens, who happened to be Muslims?

Just a guess.

Should’ve also thrown in the recent forced conversions of Indian Christians and torching of churches by Hindu fanatics as well. Nothing but silence from the self-described marauding knights of Christ

His middle initial, C, doesn’t stand for consistent.

And based on his last article, coherent, clever and competent are clearly out of the running as well.

OK, this song is from 1992. I would give my favorite band of the 80-90’s to REM.

Ignoreland was against Ronnie Raygun. It was epic.

80s would be Iron Maiden

90s would be Soundgarden
