Reality Check: Terrorism Cases Involving Muslim-Americans, 2014

Terrorism • Views: 48,368

Since the 2016 race for the presidency is already heating up at this early stage, I thought it might be a good idea to post the most recent report—published on February 9, 2015, by the University of North Carolina and the Triangle Center on Terrorism and Homeland Security—regarding homegrown terrorism.

I’m sure there will be a disproportionate amount of attention focused on the “threat” posed by American Muslims in the coming months, accompanied by no small amount of scare mongering, so I’m leaving this here as a reality check to help keep things in perspective.

Added emphasis is mine. See the source PDF following the excerpt for charts & footnotes. If you prefer spreadsheet data, you can download it from this page:

Twenty-five Muslim-Americans were associated with violent terrorism in 2014, bringing the total since 9/11 to 250, or less than 20 per year (Figure 1). A large majority of the cases involved travel (5 individuals) or attempted travel (14 individuals) to join designated terrorist organizations in Syria or (in one case) Yemen.

Only six of the 25 individuals plotted or engaged in violence in the United States in 2014 (Figure 2), matching the lowest total since 2008. (Three of these individuals are included provisionally, as the evidence is unclear at present whether their plots ought to be characterized as terrorism.)

Over the 13 years since 9/11, the U.S. government’s counterterrorism efforts have identified 109 Muslim-Americans plotting against targets in the United States. (Another 33 individuals had no publicly-known targets.) Two thirds of the domestic plots were disrupted early, with weapons or explosives provided by undercover agents or informants. Three quarters of plots involving explosives were disrupted early, compared with one third of plots with other weapons.

Twenty Muslim-Americans have carried out attacks on targets in the United States since 9/11 — nine involving firearms, seven involving explosives, two involving knives or hatchets, one each involving a car or small aircraft (Figure 3). In 2014, four terrorism-related incidents involving Muslim-Americans — two using firearms, one a knife, and one a hatchet — killed seven people in 2014, bringing the total number of fatalities in the United States from terrorism by Muslim-Americans since 9/11 to 50.1

Meanwhile, the United States suffered approximately 14,000 murders in 2014 and more than 200,000 murders since 9/11.2 While the murder rate has declined in recent years, mass shootings and “active shooter” incidents have increased.3 In 2014, there were 30 mass shootings with four or more fatalities in the United States, killing 136 people,4 more than twice as many victims as from Muslim-American terrorism in the United States in more than 13 years since 9/11. As in previous years’ editions of this report, cases of terrorism involving Muslim-Americans were identified through monitoring of news media, social media, government agency statements, and other researchers’ work on the subject.5 […]

You’re welcome. That’s the thing—it’s not that the threat is non-existent, it’s that it gets blown wayyyyy out of proportion.

Mad props for this page CL and thank you Charles for making it a front page. I for one am tired of the scapegoating of Muslims and especially Muslim Americans.

What’s frustrating to see is they were actually declining and then started up again in 2009. I blame a lot of that on the rise of Anti-Muslim rhetoric by conservative politicians and pundits in the Obama presidency. I was no fan of President Bush but President BUsh condemned anti-Muslim bigotry, that’s more than you can say about any Republican running for president this time.

Some of that can be attributed to the fact that the US is one of few countries outside Israel with more Jews than Muslims.

I think the base always had the anti-Muslim sentiment really. The difference now though is the politicians espouse the rhetoric. I remember pointing out to anti Muslim wingnut bigots I knew that PResident Bush had a Muslim man as the ambassador to Afghanistan. That Bush had urged tolerance for Muslims after 9/11 but none of the matter to them and they kept on espousing bigotry towards Muslims even though I would bet you good money that they had encountered few if any Muslims in their lives. I really do have a lot of legitimate gripes with the Bush presidency and the man himself but I can’t call him an Islamaphobe enabler.

Not just with that but him talking about the destruction of the boardwalk at the one resort town in Jersey following Sandy. As someone who has gone to a beach resort town like that pretty much every year since I was a kid, that was something I could relate to him on. He loses me when he starts berating teachers for wanting better wages and pensions though.

Someone was asking about Lee Kuan Yew? He was no democrat and crushed opposition and ruled Singapore with a heavy hand, anointing his son (in 2004) as his successor:

“It also animated his arguments about why opposition politicians should not be allowed to govern.

“There is a heavy price to pay if mediocrities and opportunists ever take control of the government,” he said in 1982.”

(snip)

“Lee saw moral failings in the liberal democracy of the West and believed that “good government” and economic advancement were a more important national goal than individual liberties. He considered “so-called human rights” largely irrelevant to the growth of developing Asian nations.”

Ha! I remember when officials in the Soviet Olympic delegations would confiscate chewing gum any of their athletes were given by the locals or other athletes.

Their thinking was that chewing gum was the ultimate example of capitalism run amok. They pictured evil Monopoly Men plotting in some smoke-filled room: “Hey, I bet we can get people to chew rubber if we market it right!”

Can’t honestly disagree with them.

I think Watt wins hands down. Fall was just a garden variety crook, Watt was a seriously deranged ideologue who thought the environment didn’t matter because Jesus was coming back soon anyway.
Watt got away with a lot because his brand of kook fundamentalism was not as well known then as it is now. A lot of people just didn’t know it was possible for such a person to penetrate the halls of power.

A favorite. Fun fact: the labratory props used in Young Frankenstein were the same props used for the 1931 Frankenstein movies.

Mel Brooks says that Kenneth Strickfaden, the man who created the props, still had them in his garage. When they found out, Strickfaden dusted them off, plugged them in, and they all worked. “I asked [20th Century] Fox if we could rent them, and give him a decent sum of money,” says Brooks.

Fun Facts: Even though both were intensely anti-Communist, for regional-powers rivalry reasons Pinochet and the Aregentine junta were on bad terms, bad enough that the Argentinian generals felt they could not move their largely-volunteer infantry units off of the border region with Chile in 1982, instead sending mostly conscript units to the Falklands. These were of lesser quality than the all-volunteer British infantry who opposed them.

Kind of like how Hitler and the Nazis weren’t tight with the Austrofascists.

Slate and ABC have very different takes on today’s tardfuckery.

To be fair, after reading the article the “could” in ABC’s headline only pertains to the legality of Cruz’s candidacy under the “natural born citizen” criteria, and not the real world potential of his actually winning.

CCJ’s Fact-Free Zone:

Yes, I know it’s Wiki, but:

While at Princeton, he competed for the American Whig-Cliosophic Society’s Debate Panel and won the top speaker award at both the 1992 U.S. National Debating Championship and the 1992 North American Debating Championship.[39] In 1992, he was named U.S. National Speaker of the Year and Team of the Year (with his debate partner, David Panton).[39] Cruz was also a semi-finalist at the 1995 World Universities Debating Championship, making him Princeton’s highest-ranked debater at the championship.[40][41] Princeton’s debate team later named their annual novice championship after Cruz.[40]

I don’t see “named world’s best debater” anywhere in that.
Apparently CCJ’s grasp of geography is on a par with the rest of his mad genetic IQ.

Simple, it sounded easier and better than saying he was a debating finalist. And him being a great debater on the college level doesn’t take away from the fact he’s a total right wing hack. There’s plenty of people who were great college athletes too who never amounted to much in the pros.

I thought the Arthur thing was iffy since the people spreading it were his political enemies. I am familiar with it though since Arthur’s fil is the name sake of a town near where I grew up.

The guy who signed the first civil service act?

The very same. He was born depending on who you ask in Vermont or Canada. Like Cruz, he had a foreign (Irish in Chet’s case) born father but an American born mother.

Gen. Philip Sheridan is one of my g-g-uncles (his parents are my g-g-g-grandparents).
There was serious talk of him making a presidential bid, but the rumors were floated that he was born on the ship coming to the US from Ireland, instead of being born in Albany, NY. (there was no birth certificate, just a baptismal certificate).

Interesting. Didn’t know Sheridan was considered presidential material at one point. That’s a neat relation.

That’s pretty crazy that with that many generations removed you can see a resemblance. I found a picture that a distant relative who I don’t know posted of my great great grandfather on ancestry.com and my Dad said he saw a bit of his brother in him. That’s really cool that your grandmother had that. My grandmother kept the old discharge papers of my grandfather’s grandfather. Not sure where they went after she died, I really hope my aunt has them because that’s something that I really hope was not put in the trash.

My Aunt Bernadette (RIP) got all of Philip’s stuff when my grandmother died back in the early 70s.

Kind of on-topic, but I do appreciate it when numbers and facts can be brought into discussions. Terrorism from all quarters, in the aggregate, has taken far, far fewer lives since 9/11 than murders committed for other reasons. Those mostly don’t make the national news. A few days ago, this mental case who’d been lurking around the gas station nearest our home and making everybody nervous saw his chance and jumped the night clerk around 3AM. He beat him to a pulp, stole his pickup and threw him in the back, and drove it to Dallas where he showed it off to his brother. Brother immediately phoned the cops and the medics. But the clerk didn’t make it.

These are the murders that fill the morgues but not the headlines.
