Homemade cranberry sauce simmered for three hours and is now chilling in the fridge.
Turkey just went into the oven.
Taking a break before diving into making all the sides.

For those keeping track at home, we told him this morning and all is well. He’s annoyed but dealing with it appropriately. Which is major progress compared to September.

Thanks again all.

I spent my morning doing 6 loads of laundry so I can now be seriously thankful for clean clothes, bedding, towels, slip covers, afghans, pillows and rugs. With 3 dogs in the house the last few items won’t be clean for long so revel I will while it lasts. The rest of the day involves the last episodes of Jessica Jones and a lagniappe crochet project. Perfect!

Tomorrow will be Thanksgiving with my bestest friends and I don’t even have to cook much.

Baby Kissed by Pope Sees Brain Tumor Shrink, Family Says

Lots of “it’s a miracle” stuff in the article, but the last part and the comment by little’s girl’s father is the best:

Some friends and family called it the “Miracle on Market Street” — attributing Gianna’s remarkable turnaround to the kiss she had received from Pope Francis.

For Masciantonio, however, the pope’s kiss was not the miracle that saved Gianna’s life or cured her.

“The kiss was God’s work, that’s for sure,” said Masciantonio. “But, the miracle was Him giving us the platform to reach those doctors who, ultimately, played a major role in saving Gianna’s life.”

Happy Thanksgiving to Lizardland!

I can appreciate your feelings, Charles, my Dad died 13 years ago, and I still miss him. The holidays stopped being special after I worked in radio and had to spend every Christmas away from my family to cover for all the full timers.

Then I spent 4 years working retail. If I hear Manheim Steamroller during the season, I develop a tic, to this day.

But what I want to encourage everyone to do is smile. No matter how bad your day is, no matter how bad the traffic, no matter how crappy things are going, make an effort to smile at everyone you meet. Odds are, they’ll smile back, and you’ll feel just a little less crappy about the world, and so will they.

American-style patriotism has arrived in France in the wake of the Paris terror attacks

Lovely, just lovely.

Americans can get in on the act, too.
FOREIGN LEGION RECRUITMENT WEBSITE

How to join the French Foreign Legion?
How to join?
The Foreign legion only recruits applicants actually reporting at an information desk (PILE) or at a preselection center (CP) located in Metropolitan France.
Accommodation and food are free during the whole selection process.
The Foreign legion does not facilitate any administrative steps taken by applicants to obtain a visa or a residence permit in France

Just the thing for all those bloodthirsty ammosexual macho men who can’t abide Obama’s politically correct US military?
Er, probably not.

On the day you report at the Foreign Legion’s information desk, you should be declared medically fit to take the required physical aptitude tests .

You should be declared physically fit to serve in all places and weather conditions, without restriction.

Your “Body Mass Index” (BMI) should range between 20 and 30 kg/m² (BMI = Weight/Size ²) *

EXAMPLE: BMI of a man with a height of 1.75 m (5ft9) and weight of 72kg (158.7 lbs).
BMI = 72kg/(1.75m*1.75m) = 23.5 kg/m ².

And above all, applicants are required to pass the sports tests !

I share in the thanks for this wonderful community. So easy to take for granted that there is this welcoming place to hang whenever we want or need a break to enjoy learning something new from the amazingly accomplished and eclectic LGF crew or just some silliness as a respite from the sometimes overwhelming seriousness of it all.

Thanks, Charles, for building this excellent sandbox and inviting us to play in it.

Can’t go wrong with some TP. His great songs are made better by his crackerjack band, led by one of my personal heroes, Mike Campbell.

Pet the dogs for me!

No doubt. Mike Campbell is great and is just so mellow people seem to forget he exists. And Benmont Tench teases the keys with the best too.

That seems to be the theme with Petty too, on the documentary they have shown today (on again now) Petty always wanted to be and was conscious to maintain a band. They had to be friends and love to play together. That is rare as we all know.

As far as the “Replacing Thanksgiving with a Day of Atonement” discussion from the last thread—wasn’t this “First Thanksgiving”/Pilgrim crap a 20th Century retcon? What the official holiday is celebrating is the capture of Vicksburg and the victory at Gettysburg. I think we should go back to making that the focus just to rub the damn Rebels’ noses in it.

21/11/2015 Wollstonecraft 2.00am. Police received numerous calls in relation to a violent domestic, with reports of a woman screaming hysterically, a man yelling “I’m going to kill you, your dead! Die Die!!”, with the sounds of furniture being tossed around the unit. Numerous police cars responded to the address and began banging on the door. A man answered the door, out of breath and rather flushed with the following conversation:
Police: “Where’s your wife”
Male: “umm I don’t have one”
Police: “Where your girlfriend”
Male: “umm I don’t have one”
Police: “We had a report of a domestic and a women screaming, where is she?”
Male: “I don’t know what you’re talking about I live alone”
Police: “Come on mate people clearly heard you yelling you were going to kill her and furniture getting thrown around the unit”
At this point the male became very sheepish.
Police: “come on mate, what have you done to her.”
Male: “it was a spider”
Police “Sorry??”
Male: “It was a spider, a really big one!!
Police :”what about the women screaming?”
Male: “Yeah sorry that was me, I really really hate spiders”
As it turns out the male was chasing a rather large spider around the unit with a can or mortein. After a very long pause some laughter and a quick look in the unit to make sure there was no injured party (apart from the spider) we left.

Wow, finallly made it to the bottom of a current thread! Snowing in Denver, but it’s not a very convincing attempt yet. Less than an inch on the deck so far.

Traditional bland meal underway. Stuffed 12-lb turkey in the oven. Sweet potatoes cooking, two more potatoes to peel for the big bowl of mashed (made with real cream, to be extra fattening). Extra dish of stuffing baked & cooling. Waldorf salad and ambrosia cooling in the fridge. Once the potatoes get on the stove, the next attempt will be green bean casserole with fresh green beans instead of can. Last minute will be the gravy, corn for the kid who won’t touch the green beans, and Hawaiian sweet rolls. Cranberry jelly & the canned berried kind. (Forgot to grab the fresh cranberry/orange stuff at the store yesterday). Pumpkin pie will be baked later, when I get around to it.

All this for four people… This is my one glorious annual orgy of cooking, the point of which is to have enough leftovers to last for the entire weekend.

Reminding myself I am thankful for so much today. A roof over our heads, cupboards and freezer full of food. The 91-year-old mother who’s sitting out there complaining that the current football game is too uneven to be interesting — I’m thankful for every day I come upstairs and find her still breathing. The smart, sweet 17-year-old son who has one more year of high school before we have to sweat finding scholarships — I’m thankful for every day he has with his naughty old grandmother, even when they bicker like a pair of kindergartners. The semi-retired spouse who’s enjoying a well-earned respite from 20 years of gawdawful Christmas music 8 hours a day at the grocery store — I’m thankful to have him here putting up with his mother-in-law and his kid, more or less patiently.

And a world where the news increasingly scares me silly, I’m thankful for this sandbox full of reasonably sane, civil, sarcastic, funny, engaged and intelligent people. And the critter pictures. Thank you for the sandbox, Charles. Happy Thanksgiving to all of the Lizards! May the weekend involve good food, friends, as much family as you have or can stand, and mostly a bit of respite in there, to rest up for the December dash.

The Kid is home from work, turkey is in the oven, sides are ready to pop in when the turkey is done, pies baked (pumpkin and dutch apple with bourbon). All that’s left to do is boil and smash the potatoes and make gravy when the turkey is done.

My finger still hurts like a mofo (got stung by a yellow jacket this morning, because of course I did), but some Aleve and Benadryl are helping. Miss Dog is very mad at me because we didn’t and won’t be doing our daily hike today. I think she’ll forgive me when I put some turkey in with her doggie food today.

It’s a quiet holiday for us, no family except the 3 of us. Husband has a new job, seems to be holding, still have lots of disasters looming (the Kid needs a new crown on a tooth, we found out yesterday, we find out Monday how bad things are and what it will cost him- he’s paying for it, we’re broke), but I remain cautiously optimistic.

If someone had told me over 5 yrs ago that I’d be grateful for Little Green Footballs of all places I would have told them to GFY and laughed and laughed. And yet, here I am. Not only that, it’s the only political blog/community I participate in now, and I’ve been part of many online communities in the last 15 yrs. So thanks to Charles for all he does and has done to make this a safe place, a place of kindness (with the occasional spat, but hey, what’s a family without a spat or six?) and of respect. Thanks Charles, I mean it. And to all of you, thanks for welcoming me here, hearing parts of my life and being supportive, thanks SO much. Hope all of you have the best holiday season you can have.

It’s 60° out and sunny, which is absolutely gorgeous for this time of year. Sadly the temperature swings are very painful for someone (me) with arthritis.

I am thankful for Norco pain meds and prescription health insurance :)

I haven’t decided yet whether to make the Cornish Hen in the oven or in the upright rotisserie. I’ll probably use the oven since it tends to come out kind of dry in the rotisserie.

I am thankful that 7 years ago I came to a crossroads on the Cyberhighway and chose the left turn (LGF) instead of the right turn (Bye, FreeRepublic! I don’t miss you!)

I am thankful for the job I have had for the past 5 years.

I am thankful for my large family and the success of my children in their various professions, and for all of my beautiful grandchildren that I spend money on like crazy.

I am thankful to have all of you for friends!

We had a lovely hike this morning. Now I’m just finishing up my lunch and getting ready to get the food prep into high gear. Heritage breed turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce smashed purple potatoes with shallots, broccoli with Asiago cheese, and pumpkin pie. Then there’s the linen tablecloth and the Good China™ (The stuff you have to wash by hand.)
Only 5 people coming this year-daughter and son-in-law are going to his parents’ house (one does have to share one’s married children.) There will be many leftovers :-)

Tomorrow I will avoid going anywhere near a store.

Yes, the same thing happened with my report - I first got an email saying it didn’t violate their community standards, then an “update” saying it did, and they removed it.

This probably means Facebook won’t do anything unless some threshold number of reports is received.

My posting frequency may have decreased over the past few months, but I lurk a LOT and know that whenever I’m stumped about the answer to something, 99.9% of the time someone here can provide an answer.

Also, you guys drown out the voices in my head—LOL. Just kidding! Well sorta. I live alone, it’s just me & the cats, and sometimes you can let things get to you, y’know? When it’s just you, thoughts can buzz around in your head and become distorted in terms of perspective—sort of like mental tunnel vision—so it’s good to have a place where you can go to bounce them off other people for a more balanced perspective.

Last week I got really low after Trump made that statement about the database for tracking Muslims, and this place helped calm me down. I try to keep my freak-outs away from here, but that day was really bad for me. So I also want to add my thanks for this place consistently being a sanity haven for me, and it’s pretty much the only purely political blog I come to anymore, though I very rarely post. I’m lucky enough that most of the people I interact with share my political beliefs (I dare not get too deep into politics with the other IT guys I work with, I just don’t want to know). This place gives me the strength to deal with the derp that has infested most of my entertainment blogs ( I love me some pop culture, what can I say).

Every time somebody takes DT to task for some outrageous or unfounded claim, it is spun as a personal attack against DT, part of a nefarious media plot to “take him down” or turned into a debate about statistics, the subjective and ephemeral nature of human memory or the definition of “truth”.

The point is, he knows he can say pretty much anything he wants to and it will not hurt his standing in the polls and that standing is what keeps his face at the forefront of the GOP primary race without him having to spend a penny of his own money.

“But I am deeply disturbed by how he mocked a crippled reporter. This is not what he is about. It’s gross.

It’s gross and it’s exactly what Trump is all about. Ginger Snapped seems to be oblivious to the fact that most people find his behavior equally as loathsome (though thankfully for the rest of the world, he’s not as well known).

BTW, the news station KTLA has a photo of Trump mocking the reporter right next to a photo of Kovaleski, making it obvious that Trump knew full well about his disability. (Source article: ktla.com) His supporters won’t care though.

And the people behind Trump who laughed at his mocking? They’re just as morally bankrupt. Any one of them and/or anyone they love could one day—today, tomorrow, next month, whenever—have a stroke, ruptured brain aneurysm, or be involved in an accident that would render them equally disabled. Their behavior is revolting.

Also, I did see that Russia is apparently persecuting the Russian Muslims again.

The Associated Press reports that Russia’s crackdown on Muslims is fueling their exodus to ISIS. For example, Russia’s southernmost republic of Dagestan keeps devout Muslims under surveillance, routinely raids their homes, and hauls them to police stations to give DNA samples and fingerprints. Regional police say nearly a third of the estimated 3,000 Russians who are believed to have gone to fight alongside IS militants in Syria are from Dagestan. The AP added, “Few efforts are made by Russian authorities to stop young men from leaving.”

I really like what the Crimean Tatars did with those transmission lines to Crimea, by the way.

I’ll bet 100 Internet dollars she doesn’t criticize Trump for mocking the Times reporter.

I’m in Mexico, so not much Thanksgiving.

The bad: A hurricane is passing us by so today is gray with a warm, humid drizzle. My uber-Catholic, uber-conservative in-laws from Louisiana are here visiting and manage to work in how much taxes they pay about once an hour. Then complain about potholes. The LA governors race was briefly brought up and of course “both sides do it” - i.e. Edwards is just as bad as Vitter. They ignored me when I said “Huh, I didn’t know that Edwards wears diapers and hooks up with prostitutes.” BIL posts “abolish abortion” crap on FB about once a day, so it may yet get ugly. I’m feeding them turkey sandwiches for dinner.

The good: LGF and all of you for keeping me sane in insane times.

The VERY VERY VERY good: My lovely and sweet college girl is here! And she’s as libtard as me!

None of this shit is worthy of discussion. The point is that he is eminently unqualified for the office for which he is campaigning, both politically and personally.

As long as the discussion wanders away from that obvious fact, he is quite happy.

Well, Facebook first said that list of addresses of Muslims and Muslim sympathizers posted by the militia types was not a violation of its policies. I went and gave it a frowny face and complained again that this was a threat. FB has now removed the post and let me know. Jeez Louise. This should be obvious and not need a followup.

I did the same thing. Maybe we were not alone in our reaction.

I already was about one thing, which I had relayed to my Imam.

I am really hypersensitive to sensory stimuli. Unfortunately, one specific thing is causing a struggle between my being Muslim, and a bodily system.

I have always been personally conservative, so this leads to stress where my Autism and Islam clash.

Dinner has been eaten; most of leftovers in the fridge.
Still have to face the remains of the bird, and get them into storable condition. Tomorrow will be the traditional boiling of the bones for turkey stock. There will be homemade turkey soup in my future, I just have to get through the icky bits first. (The teenager who is GLAD to help carve off the sandwich meat expresses absolutely no interest in the messy part of the operation. Can’t think why.) Makes me sad these days, since I don’t have a big slobbering puppy at my feet waiting for the turkey skin and scraplets.

Family is in their traditional tryptophan coma. I’ve promised myself another 45 minutes of inertia before I face doing the dishes. Will need to hand wash the china that my uncle sent home from Occupied Japan, when he was there during the Korean War. Ditto the serving bowl from the ivy-pattern set my grandmother bought from JC Penney back in the 40’s. Have to remind myself that bowl my mom bought when I was a baby is almost 60 years old too - when did that happen? Oldest plate in the china cabinet is from a set my grandmother used when my mom was little, so it’s been around over 80 years. I hope my future daughter-in-law likes antiques.

Now just have to decide if I have enough ambition to make the pumpkin pies tonight, using my grandmother’s pie pans from lord knows when — probably somewhere between the 20’s and the 50’s and still in perfectly good condition. It’s that or just thaw out the Sara Lee cheesecake that’s out in the freezer. Decisions, decisions…

Happy Thanksgiving all! I told this joke over and over while I was skiing yesterday and today:

except for the apology to bloodsuckers and cocksuckers, I left that out.

I am thankful for my mother who worked her ass off in the hotel industry for two decades so her and her husband and her two kids (me and li’l sis) could go skiing. My mom provided the means for me to find my Zen, an ethereal portal into the mountains, a way to stay young, the Fountain of Youth (I FOUND IT!)

I am thankful for LGF and its environs being conducive to ideas, laughter, music, and a great amount of thought and inquiry.

I am thankful for the Acoustic Guitar tag at LGF. That collection is some of the best of the internet. I go back to it often, such beautiful music.

And y’all are a bunch of weird motherfuckers! I am thankful for that, too.

Cheers!
