A very local radio station this morning had a DJ who introduced his guests by saying “we couldn’t get haggis, so we got the next best thing” and then introduced a “celtic” band. And they were. A guitar, violin, and bagpipes. Not identifiably Irish, but so what. But do the Irish do bagpipes and haggis? I don’t know.
Anyway. I hate bagpipes.

I don’t really hate them. But I can never get over the time I was about to die at the end of a half marathon, and the organizers had placed a single bagpiper about 1/2 mile from the end. It was like a funeral dirge.
I was wading through the comments at Collier’s “Fascinating Rhythm” video (I still like watching it) and down a ways is a comment from Quincy Jones. Reading the replies to that, someone mentioned that Quincy had Jacob at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 2014:
Just listen to it. And realize that Jacob is 18 in the video.

Celebrated the Squeaker’s 10th B-day today
Young Squeak, 2007
I just heard this on NPR this evening while driving out into the country; it’s worth a listen:
( 33:38)
Terry Gross, Fresh Air:
Washington Post reporter Robert O’Harrow dissects Trump’s acquisition of the Taj Mahal casino/hotel, which went into bankruptcy a year after it opened.
“…The answer about who was affected is deeper than it might seem because in March of 1992, Trump’s Castle and his Plaza casinos also filed for bankruptcy. And to resolve those debts, Trump gave up half his stake in each of the casino to the lenders. So the lenders definitely lost money through the cascading failures of these three casinos. But small-time investors who had bought the bonds directly or through retirement funds also suffered losses. And so did small business owners who sold the Trump organization paint, equipment, food, limousine services. And many of those were eventually paid only a fraction of what they were due. And we know this in part because a professor at Temple University - in your town - Bryant Simon went in and studied Atlantic City and found that a lot of people recall having to struggle to get by after these bankruptcies.”
Later in the story, O’Harrow sums up the national danger inherent in Trump’s narcissism:
“…tremendous ambition, tremendous set of promises and he turned his back on his promises. And then he told me, that was my prerogative. Now, I think it probably was his prerogative. But as a reporter trying to take stock of a presidential candidate, I think that’s noteworthy. Making promises, changing the promises or turning your back on them, suffering the consequences and then later saying, that’s my prerogative.”
Balloon Juice has some stuff up about the Oregon standoff and related items. One of the scarier things is the “Constitutional Sheriff” stuff going on up in the north west. This one is about the local authorities making an example of one of the BLM agents, a former Iraq vet:
I didn’t hear from Ellison again until mid-December, a week before he was to leave Utah for a new job. He said he was in trouble and didn’t know where to turn. He thought he needed a lawyer. Could I help? It seems that Ellison had a “water cooler” discussion with an office secretary in the monument offices in Escalante just three days before. She happened to be the mayor’s sister and the mother-in-law of a deputy sheriff. Apparently, the discussion was about Middle East politics, and during the discussion, Ellison, who is also a decorated Irag War veteran, explained the meaning of an IED (improvised explosive device), a weapon used in terrorist action in the Middle East. Apparently, the deputy’s mother-in-law was unfamiliar with the term.
The next morning, two deputy sheriff’s arrived at Ellison’s door and began to question him about his previous day’s conversation at the office. He explained that it was a harmless conversation, but the deputies alleged that Ellison had made some kind of threat. Ellison said there was absolutely no threat in any of the conversation. They told him that their boss disagreed and wanted “to make an example of him.” They cuffed him, and read him his rights halfway to the jail where they would fingerprint him and where he would spend the night. He was bailed out the next day and told to come back in a few days, when they would tell him what the charges against him were. When he returned home, he found out the BLM had interviewed the secretary as well as another ranger who witnessed the conversation. Both had stated that there had been no threat in Ellison’s conversation.
Here’s the kicker of the story:
many Western sheriffs do not believe that the federal government has jurisdiction over federal land in their counties

Okay, so I watched the Maddow interview with Sanders, and honestly I don’t see anything to get upset about. Sure, he’s saying he’s in it to win, he’s going to make the argument to the superdelegates, etc. He’s a candidate, and that’s what you do right up until you drop out.
Tuesday morning, Rubio was going to stay in the race even if he lost Florida. Everyone knew that was bullshit, and sure enough, he dropped out.
Bernie does still have a shot. He’s got less of a shot now than he did at this point last week, and as people point out, he can’t win on close victories, but Hillary can win on close losses.

Unfortunately, he still has a fair amount of money even after his fruitless spending on Fimno Tuesday (an acronym of the states involved, so we don’t keep using Super), and a campaign team that isn’t in radio contact with reality. I’m concerned that he’s entered the realm where he’s seeking blind revenge than thinking of what’s best for the party (…which he’s not a member of) or the country.

I don’t care if he stay in, if he’d not trash Clinton. The saddest thing to me is that I think he has just about no chance of winning, but his peeps are borrowing against their retirements and running up their credit cards to donate (at least that’s what some of them are saying—and they’re saying it proudly.)
Their fundraising appeals are relentless (I get more from Bernie’s campaign—6 in the past 24 hours than from Hillary—2 in the past 24 hours, and I don’t even know why I’m on his list.) And, since he’s going after “true believers,” I think they’re more likely to keep giving, even though his chances are between slim and none.

Yesterday, he had some kind of Ashley Madison accusations targeting a Kasich aide donor. It’s his usual innuendo masquerading as journalism.
As a (former) professional journalist, it really burns me that CCJ and other bloggers print their stories without any rebuttal from the figures being slammed by the stories. They do this lame “we have reached out to So-And-So and will update this story when we get a reply.” Real newspapers, etc., can’t do that, or they’ll get sued for libel or defamation. The rule is, pester the person until you either get a no comment or a denial. Only if you have made a concerted effort to reach them several times, and failed, will your editor let the story go to press. Even then, you have to convince him and your readers that the story is credible, with at least two sources for each accusation or fact being cited.
Plus, I just fucking hate the expression “we have reached out to …” So emo.

There’s no question that Garland is to the right of Sanders, and that it’s unlikely that Bernie would nominate someone of his judicial philosophy were he in the Oval Office. I am not so sure that this is evidence that Sanders could compromise. The statement also included “it’s unlikely that Bernie would nominate someone of his judicial philosophy were he in the Oval Office”. If Sanders were President today, with the Congress we have, in the political environment we have now, would he nominate someone more to the left than Garland? Would that play? Doubt it.

I don’t necessarily think there’s anything wrong with wanting that, but it’s kind of a messed up thing to actually say out loud. Obama is President until Jan 20, 2017, his rights and responsibilities aren’t in any way diminished until that day.

I haven’t watched the interview yet, but what I have seen from the trusted minds here is disconcerting to me. The idea of wanting the Garland nomination withdrawn in this scenario reeks of the same kinds of ideas that President Obama should be challenged in a Primary back in 2012.

Classes done for the day, I came back to read Chuck’s hit piece on Ben Shapiro. It’s mostly innuendo, but I thought this paragraph was amusing.
No one seems to be looking at how Ben has a serious conflict of interest. It’s obvious that his financial backers have an interest in stopping Trump. And, in the spirit of full disclosure, so do I. Were Ted Cruz the nominee I would make about $250,000 thanks to the betting markets. I support Ted Cruz for president and have researched sometimes paid, sometimes not, all of the candidates running for office. (GotNews. com is reader supported. If you want to donate, please click here.)
In the same paragraph, Rage Furby brags he’s bet money on a losing horse, and also begs for money to support his website. Not the best way to inspire confidence among potential donors, IMO.
re: #119 Ming5000
That was low hanging fruit. Admit it.
I did kinda lob that one up there, slow and low.

They should be concerned about Trump. In 2012 Romney got 60% of the white vote and 28% of the Hispanic vote and lost. Trump has a 12% approval rating with Hispanics, so he will be lucky to get half the Hispanic support Romney did, and Hispanics will be a larger percentage of the electorate this year than in 2012. If he is counting on making that up with millions of blue collar whites, he also has to factor in the millions of upscale whites he is turning off. Obviously you can’t take any race for granted, but I don’t see how the math works to put Trump into the White House.
re: #43 The Ghost of a Cunning Plan
Holy shit.
Ted Cruz’s foreign policy team is Frank Gaffney, Elliot Abhrams (of Iran Contra) and Andrew McCarthy.
Trump’s foreign policy team is a fever dream and the voices in his head.
No telling which one of them is actually worse.
Both are completely and utterly incapable of putting together a coherent foreign policy.
Lest we forget, Gaffney is a leading Islamophobe (to counter Trump’s massive advantage with that GOP demographic).
So, Sanders concedes that he lost Missouri. That means Hillary won the clean sweep. Won all 5 states last week. Lemme hear again from the Bernie bros about how they were oh so close and that pledged delegates should turn from Hillary because “something” is on Bernie’s side.
The reality is that Bernie keeps losing ground to Hillary and he has no shot at the nomination. And given that there is polling from NY showing him getting blown out doesn’t inspire any confidence that upcoming states will be any better for him. Heck, the most recent polling in Arizona shows Hillary ahead by more than 20 points. She’s up nearly 50 points in NY.
That’s not something Bernie’s overcoming.

Bernie does have one justification for staying in the race, to provide Democrats with an alternative just in case rwnjs fever dreams come true and she is indicted for “emailgate.” But any thoughts that he is going to start winning landslide victories over Hillary which will cause the superdelegates to abandon her for him are purely delusional.

JUST DON’T THROW 6.9M+ of us in one category! IT DOESN’T JIVE!— Lady MAGA ~Bethany (@thetimewasthen) March 18, 2016
Speaking of Rage Furby, it appears he’s a piker compared to this douchecanoe:
Wey e-mailed me on New Year’s Day 2014. He said he was seeking comment for a series of investigative articles about short sellers and fraud, and he had a list of questions for me. Here’s a sample. (All correspondence from Wey in this story is presented as he sent it, uncorrected.)
“If you have no business background and neither have you obtained any education in the field of accounting of business, how could you have derived conclusions on your own involving complex global business matters mentioned in your various articles?”
“We were told you were ‘emotionally scarred’ while living in China and you are racially biased against the Chinese people. Is it true?”
“Sources told us that you have an active business activities outside your Bloomberg employment. What are those business activities? How are you able to support your lifestyle? What compensation have you received from stock short sellers, hedge funds, and other tabloid writers?”
He ended with: “This is the time for you to come out clean, Dune.”
I didn’t respond. He followed up two days later with additional prompts, including “Sources told us you have gained a lot of weight due to stress.”
Wey had already started tweeting that I was implicated in “massive frauds.” When Bloomberg’s lawyers sent him a letter telling him to take down the tweets and stop defaming me, he fired off another long e-mail. “You are a tabloid writer, a sensational woman, a total loser with absolutely no sense of morality,” read the message, which nonetheless went on to say that “this is just the beginning of endless efforts to express our opinions forever, and continues the debates of our differences in civility.”
I knew something was coming, so I kept Googling my name and Wey’s name to see what it would be. That’s how I discovered my star turn on TheBlot.
I was rattled for days. I couldn’t focus on a story I was reporting about—as it happens—online privacy and anonymous browsing. Still, some things struck me as absurdly funny. Wey tried to drum up traffic to the story with a tweet claiming I was implicated in a “new Bernie Madoff fraud.” His e-mails, which kept coming, referred to “twits” instead of tweets and to Bloomberg’s outside law firm, Willkie Farr, as Wilkie Fart.
Wey’s name wasn’t on the story, but he wasn’t trying too hard to cover his tracks. The website’s terms of use identified theblot.com as part of FNL Media, which a copyright form placed at the same office address and floor as NYGG.
As I looked into how to get Wey’s vile material off the Internet, I saw that FNL’s business registration listed Holland & Knight, a respectable law firm, and a firm partner, Neal Beaton. That gave me some hope—maybe someone there would be willing to talk sense into Wey. I reached out through Bloomberg’s lawyers. The message came back—sorry, can’t help. (Holland & Knight says, through a spokesperson, “Our involvement with FNL Media was only in relation to the formation of the company in 2013.”)
I had no better luck with the companies Wey used to spread Blot posts. The site had a Facebook page, and Bloomberg’s legal team tried to get Facebook to remove references to me. No response. (The “RACIST” photo was in TheBlot’s photo stream when I checked as I was writing this story. I reported it and got an automated response saying Facebook would remove anything “that doesn’t follow the Facebook Statement of Rights and Responsibilities.” It’s still there.) When I complained to Twitter that Wey’s account was abusive, I got a response from Twitter Trust & Safety, telling me Wey wasn’t violating Twitter’s rules and to block his tweets so I couldn’t see them. I sent in more examples of Wey’s tweets, and Twitter suspended his account. He was back in less than three weeks. Someone opened a Twitter account impersonating me. The only follower was Benjamin Wey. Twitter did block that one.
My husband was enraged and impatient: Couldn’t we do something? How could this guy be allowed to get away with this? My mother worried this was all just a prelude to something worse—violence, physical harassment. I soothed them the best I could, and I kept looking for help.
Friends and colleagues told me appealing to Google was pretty much hopeless, and I found that to be true. I couldn’t figure out how to report the stories as defamatory, although there was a “report images” option that I’ve been using to no avail for two years. Later, Google forwarded me its official policy. In the U.S., the company removes search results from its index only in very specific situations involving images of child abuse, copyright infringement, or exposure of sensitive information such as Social Security numbers. Google will also respond to a court order identifying pages or content as defamatory.

If he hadn’t dedicated himself to be a completely obnoxious twit for the past decade, I might have some sympathy for him as I am a recovering Republican.

Since we Democrats love to find something to fret about even as everything seems to be coming up roses, here is a scenario to fret on. Imagine if instead of acting like deer frozen in headlights as the onrushing Trump train approaches to obliterate them, Republicans and their donors started acting now to make sure that some kind of independent entity had a ballot line in most if not all of the states, then recruited a nationally recognized and respected by Republicans figure (Mitt Romney, natch) to launch an independent run for President. Then imagine that instead of cannibalizing each others vote, Trump pulls in big numbers of blue collar whites while Romney commands traditional GOP voters and enough center-right independents that the two of them actually exceed Romney’s vote totals from 2012 by a sufficient margin to deny Clinton 270 electoral votes. The election would then be thrown to Congress where the GOP controls more than enough states to select either Romney or Trump as the next President. Far fetched, but not impossible. Of course, time is not on the GOP’s side, and if they were going to try such a maneuver they’d have to get it up and going pretty soon. If they wait to see if Trump can be denied the GOP nomination it will be too late.

But it would cost a lot of money and a decent organization to get an independent on the Presidential ballot. I checked Virginia’s rules and they would only have about a month from the date of the convention to get 5,000 signatures to get on the November ballot.

BREAKING: Ben Shapiro is a meanie and a Trump-hater, so I hates him #GrabGate
In his every continuing efforts to alienate just about everyone on the planet, Award Winning JournalistTM and professional innuendist Chuck C. Johnson is attempting to smear his former friend, Ben Shapiro, late of Breitbart News.
As best as we at GotNwes can determine, Johnson’s laser-hate-beam focus on Shapiro results from three horrible, terrible things that Shapiro has done — not even allegedly done — but done, publicly. We will now share those three things with you.
* He defended his fellow Breitbartian, Michelle Fields, against some nasty shit being said by others — like Chuck C. Johnson.
* He called Johnson’s discredited website, GotNewsDotCom, a “discredited website.”
* He resigned from Breitbart News, thereby disgracing the legacy of Andrew Breitbart (pbuh), who once ate a chicken burrito with Chuck C. Johnson before he died.

Ugly indeed. The rightwing has a 30 year supply of anti-Hillary conspiracy theories to draw on for their campaign. Hell, free republic was created in the first place to publicize the GOP take on the Whitewater scandal and the convoluted, laughably partisan investigation that followed. From “Arkancide” to Benghazi and the email server, we will be hearing it all. A whole generation has grown up without knowing who Vince Foster was. They are about to find out.

Remember, over the last 25 years, the right has repeatedly accused the Clintons of actual murder; Vince Foster, Ron Brown and his Air Force crew and fellow passengers, Arkancide, all are common buzz terms for devoted conservatives. The more pious ones take a weasely, “just asking questions” position on these slanders. Others do not bother and go straight to demanding a trial.
I predict that these allegations will play a major role in the campaign. The radio right and conspiraliars like Alex Jones have paved the way by conditioning their audience to dismiss the inconvenient fact that no duly constituted court of law has ever found any substance to the allegations.

Robert Horton, Handsome ‘Wagon Train’ Star Who Wanted More, Dies at 91
Robert Horton, a ruggedly handsome actor who found television stardom in 1957 as the scout Flint McCullough on “Wagon Train” but who resisted being typecast in westerns as he pursued a parallel career as a singer, died on Wednesday in Los Angeles. He was 91.
Wagon Train was the quintessential TV western from the genre’s heyday. It was my parents’ favorite but I preferred The Rifleman and, especially, Have Gun, Will Travel.

That was the era of Westerns. Funny how TV goes through these phases. Now we’re wall-to-wall police procedurals and comic-book characters.
Never quite could get into the Western genre. I attribute that to my age in part though. I do see why the West inspires the imagination though.

Iirc, 1959 was billed as the “year of the western” on TV. The 3 major networks had something like 32 westerns on in primetime, 1 or 2 each night on each network. Most fell by the dusty trail in pretty short order, but the better ones persisted for many years. The recent appearance of retro TV channels has allowed a new generation to see these programs and judge their worth for themselves.
My mother was a big fan of Bonanza. In recent years it seemed to be on one obscure channel or another about 5 times a day and she could catch them all. Late in her life my mom was hard of hearing and kept the TV volume up to full blast. It seemed that I could not walk up to her porch without hearing the Bonanza theme blaring through the walls. My folks and the whole Bonanza cast are gone now, but the show lives on.

Dan Blocker, who played Eric “Hoss” Cartwright on Bonanza, was from O’Donnell near Lubbock. Among other things, he was reportedly Stanley Kubrick’s first choice to play Major “King” Kong in Dr. Strangelove, but his agent unwisely refused the role and it went to Slim Pickens instead.
Blocker was an active Democrat and a notable supporter of liberal causes. He was also a Purple Heart veteran of the Korean War. He died of a heart attack at age 43, far too soon.

There’s some people that it always surprises me are or were liberals even in the film industry. Lee Marvin was staunchly liberal, even read that he was speaking in support for rights for gay people as early as the late 60’s.

To defend our democracy against Trump, the GOP must aim for a brokered convention
Pretty amazing and dead-on opinion piece from WaPo. The following paragraph sums up the danger of a Trump presidency.
No, Mr. Trump must be stopped because he presents a threat to American democracy. Mr. Trump resembles other strongmen throughout history who have achieved power by manipulating democratic processes. Their playbook includes a casual embrace of violence; a willingness to wield government powers against personal enemies; contempt for a free press; demonization of anyone who is not white and Christian; intimations of dark conspiracies; and the propagation of sweeping, ugly lies. Mr. Trump has championed torture and the murder of innocent relatives of suspected terrorists. He has flirted with the Ku Klux Klan and other white supremacists. He has libeled and stereotyped wide swaths of humanity, including Mexicans and Muslims. He considers himself exempt from the norms of democratic contests, such as the release of tax returns, policy papers, lists of advisers and other information that voters have a right to expect.

Who thinks the Republican party is willing to sacrifice itself to save the country?
What I want to know is honestly how the other Republicans would be much better than Trump? That’s what makes the whole inner GOP debate about OH NO TRUMP so funny to me. It’s not like Cruz or even Kasich are much better.
re: #225 Shiplord Kirel

Could well be. I was talking with my brother about our grandfather last night. He was in the artillery during Korea. He was very dovish. What surprised me is he told me tried to get conscientious objector status at one time.
re: #224 Dr. Matt
They wont. Trump wont let them (and he shouldn’t). He’s playing by the GOP rules and crushing the competition. That he’s far more successful than the other GOP extremists isn’t Trump’s fault.
Make no doubt about this - the remaining GOP contenders/pretenders are just as extreme as Trump. The difference is style, not substance.
Kasich and Cruz are both just as extreme as Trump.
So, if they go into the convention and Trump doesn’t get the nomination because of asshattery by the GOP “establishment” there will be blood spilled - GOP extremist on extremist.
But I don’t think it’ll get that far - not when Trump remains in the driver’s seat and looks to wrap up the nomination. He’s already got the Rule 40 portion down - no other pretender has. And Trump continues to show strength across region and demographics.
The Kasich campaign managed to eke out a win in OH. Big deal. You’re supposed to win your home state; he hasn’t done well anywhere else. Rubio didn’t - and he’s gone. Cruz won TX, and has won a handful of other states, but still trails badly.
That’s the GOP - where there are no good options - and the GOP primary voters have decided to go with the worst of the worst - Trump.

It was pointless. The Garland nomination needs to proceed because it’s what’s supposed to happen. And, on the chance that Republicans win, I’d rather have him in than give Republicans another spot on the SCOTUS. I also think there’s a high probability that Ginsberg and Breyer will need to be replaced. Sanders will be able to replace them.
He should have stayed out other than to say that the nominating process needs to continue.

Precisely my thoughts as well. If he’s elected. He’ll have time to pick some of his own since no doubt RBG and perhaps Breyer too will step down within the next four years I imagine. Plus Bernie has no idea what the Senate is going to look like if he’s elected. He just seems to show himself I think to be clueless. Does he not think that Obama probably preferred someone with a more liberal reputation too but realized that it would be prudent and practical to choose someone with a centrist reputation to really show the GOP’s act for the shit show it is?

Yeah. That was just stupid of him. Now I did see that he has also said that Garland’s pick should go ahead but he seems to be talking both sides on this. In one minute, he’s saying Obama is president let his pick be confirmed and in the next he’s bellyaching about the pick and talking about the pick as if it’s already blocked. I mean no doubt you have to be ready for all possibilities so I don’t have a problem with him considering a scenario where Garland is blocked but he shouldn’t be blurting that out. It’s just stupid politics.

Honestly what the liberals bitching about Garland piss me off in regards to is that anyone even someone like Kennedy will be an improvement over Scalia. Garland being in the mold of Kennedy would swing the Court even further to the left. You’ve taken a consistently conservative justice and replaced him with a centrist.
As for age, Garland could serve for 20+ years, which is plenty long to leave a mark on the Court.

re: #255 lawhawk
All of this is because they know damn well that if Obama gets this nomination through and then a Democrat wins in November, that person will also get to nominate Justices. That would essentially remake the Court for a generation.

It’s a Hail Mary pass but you’re right. It’s a desperation ploy because they know Garland will play a role in either upholding a lot of laws that Scalia would have overturned or overturning a lot of what Scalia would have wanted to uphold. Frankly the court needs to swing back to the center. It’s been right leaning for years.
John Marshall was appointed by a lame duck. I have no problem with keeping Garland’s name even if the Democrats win back the Senate and presidency. Clinton or Bernie will be able to pick their own. Now if Obama wants to withdraw the pick as a sort of fuck you to the GOP for obstructing and replace him with a more liberal one, I’m okay with that too because the GOP has acted like children over this but I don’t think Obama will do that. I think Obama respects the court too much to do that. Besides it’s not the end of the world to me if Garland is a centrist.

I mean as I said, I was more partial to a more younger judge with a more liberal reputation but I look at this way, he chose Garland and Garland accepted. Caught in ethics flap, Alan Grayson calls names … again
The New York Times revealed ugly details last week about a multimillion-dollar hedge fund Grayson ran.
According to the Times, Grayson solicited investors by highlighting his position in Congress — an ethical no-no.
Grayson named the fund after himself and, in one document, stressed that he had been a “member of the Financial Services Committee” and that potential investors had to invest at least $500,000.
What’s more, the fund — with off-shore operations in the Cayman Islands for at least some of the time — specialized in trying to find profits in countries in crisis, endeavoring to “capitalize on markets in turmoil due to economic, political or natural disasters.”

Murphy is an interesting candidate IMO. He’s really young. He’s 33 but is in his second term in Congress and he did beat Allan West. But yeah not big on Grayson either. If your reputation is pretty much that you’re that guy who is an asshole to Republicans, it’s not exactly what I want. God no wonder why the only prominent endorsement I see he has on wiki is the PDA Florida chapter. When you have a two man race between two Congressmen for a senate spot, I can’t help but to notice when one has a lot of inner party support and the other has none. The one with little speaks to me as someone who isn’t a good team player and you want that in a Senator.

He was also a big fan of auto racing and had a race team based in California.

I think the question has to become, when do these get locked up? According to Nate, Hillary’s over what they’ve set for her and Trump is just under 100%. I think the paradox here is that Republicans who have always lined up behind their nominee when he’s an establishment golden child will be lining up behind Trump soon.

Yeah though Shane spent some of his childhood in Tipperary. As for other Celtic punk bands, I always liked Flogging Molly over Dropkick Murphy’s because I like Dave King’s voice a lot more than the lead guy from DMs. Cranberries are another good Irish band though. Their music isn’t really Celtic inspired but I’ve always liked Dolores O’Riordan’s voice.

You know what they bitch about how the “elites” are trying to stop their votes. What about what they say about other people’s votes. I don’t care that Mississippi hasn’t gone Democratic since 1976, a person in Jackson voting for Clinton’s vote should matter as much as mine here in Northern Va. It’s so funny to me that they’re all about power to the people when they want to be but when the people aren’t voting their way, it doesn’t matter because “Confederate states” or “uneducaetd.” I’m sorry. Drumpfskind is successfully pulling some of the “blue collar”/union vote towards himself, and this is something that has to irk the likes of Sanders who probably thinks they should be his people.
But the reality of America in 2016 cuts across many old 20th century lines.
This rise of protectionism this year is not a good thing, in my opinion, because it shows how little the average American appreciates how tightly we are connected to the rest of the world through trade.
If we start to put up walls - physical or trade - the consequences will be huge yuuuuuuuge.

I used to be more protectionist on trade I concede but you’re right. I think a lot of Americans are unaware or unappreciative of how much we connect to the rest of the world because of trade. I mean it’s too bad that a lot of manufacturing jobs are lost but that’s part of how economies work. They transition. Just as in the middle of the industrial revolution, you saw fewer farmers than you had before the transition from an agricultural economy to an industrial one, we see the same thing now as we enter a post-industrial economy. When Obama first ran, I remember he had an economic adviser that suggested that we have job training programs for those who have lost jobs due to the outsourcing. I’m down with that. Let’s revitalize the economies in areas that have been hurt by outsourcing.

She has since launched a campaign for the U.S. Congress and continues to defend the militants and their tactics as lawful.
Oregon state Rep. Dallas Heard (R-Roseburg) brought a group of out-of-state lawmakers — including Reps. Graham Hunt and Matt Shea of Washington; Reps. Judy Boyle, Heather Scott and Sage Dixon of Idaho — to meet with Bundy and other armed militants.
Grasty, a vocal critic of the militants throughout the ordeal, called Bundy and his followers criminals and terrorists — but Fiore defended him as simply a frustrated rancher.

Ryan Bundy in court today:
Judge Brown approved Ryan Bundy’s waiver of 6th Amendment right to council. #socitpa

Highlight of Ryan’s hearing: Marshall ejects SovCit renegade trying to “file a motion” directly w/ judge. Much yelling. #SoCitPa

Ryan wants to know if multiple counts are double jeopardy. He heard the term somewhere, confused about concept. Stellar start! #SoCitPa

Ryan cites traffic court as legal trial experience. Broken tail light. He won! Good enough for me. #SoCitPa

Oh, I am so disappointed this this isn’t being televised.
That David Brooks is only now discovering he’s out of touch shows he’ll remain out of touch for a few decades to come.

more Ryan Bundy:
Prior court cases? “There’s been several. Let me think here…” #SoCitPa

Ryan Bundy in court today:
Oh, I am so disappointed this this isn’t being televised.
I cannot watch people making fools of themselves, which made it real hard when I was on a jury with a 19 year old trying to defend himself. Watching Bundy defend himself would make me seriously think of killing myself.
re: #333 HappyWarrior
I’ve still never broken a bone. I like to joke it’s either because I’m very lucky or very cautious.
If you ever feel the need, punching a Buick is a good place to start.
Ryan says important “not to be silenced..” Referred to Ammon’s reply at last big hearing re “no rights.” This will not go well. #SoCitPa

It appears the Bundy boys lived under a rock. Anyone know if they are products of home schooling or just too much western RWNJ political bullshit? To not know about multiple counts is rather naive for a revolutionary. It’s like they have never read anything or watched TV. He is going to put himself in a Fed prison for a long long time. Dumb and arrogant is no way to got through life.
Judge tells Ryan “this is why the Constitution insists individuals have the right to council.” Crickets. #SoCitPa

Asked to sign waiver, Ryan says “I don’t want to waive my right, I just don’t want to exercise that right, right now.” #SoCitPa
— John Schmidt (@uglyportland1) March 18, 2016
Ryan is most definitely unclear about how things work in the judicial system.
Judge says he can change mind later, but may be too late. He signs. Cue heavy metal cell door slamming closed with long echo. #SoCitPa

A serious question for people with knowledge. As I said above, I cannot watch people make fools of themselves. It doesn’t matter if I know the person is real or not, watching them do something foolish is physically painful to me. Not only can I not watch real people, but I cannot watch sitcoms for the same reason. Is there a name for this, or is it just a form of social anxiety?

Reminds me of that judge who said three year olds can defend themselves in immigration court.

It’s empathy. In your case, you can probably actually feel what the other person is feeling (or what that person should be feeling).
Well, this sucks

Sounds like an overactive sense of empathy. Anything that causes you pain is worth talking to a professional about. Especially with so many fools about.

I mean, just watching a few episodes of Law & Order should give you more of a legal education than this guy has.

I’d say it falls under a general concern for a fellow human. It is like watching a car crash you have been tipped is going to happen. The anxiety is you knowing the outcome prior to the event. You want to prevent it, but can’t. So, you turn away. I call it normal.
SMOTI again:
Do @BernieSanders supporters understand that #Chicago & #StLouis machines stole states from him? He was up til machines dumped their votes

He apparently came up with that himself. The Machine stole the election results for Hillary.

I deal with it too. Especially on the TV shows.
I couldn’t laugh at the “please clap” comment either and I know what the stakes are if he were to have won.

Don’t move to New Mexico. I just found out that the couple across the street met when she was a special ed student in the next town, and he was the janitor. They aren’t married. I’m watching them raise their son. He’s six and doesn’t know the alphabet and can’t tie his shoes. His mom can’t teach him. (I was told all this by his substitute teacher, who also lives across the street.)

This is why I can’t watch Seinfeld, and felt uncomfortable about rage furby posts until he went openly racist.

I have the same problem, to a degree (I have no empathy whatsoever for assholery).

re: #410 wrenchwench
That sounds right. I am pretty sure I’ve got some of that going on, since I frequently have to remind myself that inanimate objects do not have feelings that can be hurt by being thrown in the garbage. My wife told me recently that she had heard that it can also be an indicator of ADD.
re: #387 Ace-o-aces
People have been predicting that various “scandals” will bring down the clinton for the past 2 decades. Hasn’t worked so far, I don’t see why it should now.
Also hasn’t kept the RWNJs from trying. No reason to think they will stop.
