Presidential Debate 2: The Wrap-Up

Politics • Views: 43,932

I’m already seeing some media declaring Trump the “winner” of this debate, because after all the most important thing is to keep the horse race going until the end.

But that’s laughable. Hillary Clinton mopped the floor with the talking yam tonight, once again, and was unflappable and on point from start to finish as Trump scowled, sniffed loudly, lied repeatedly about everything under the sun, and stalked menacingly around the stage as Hillary spoke.

The most striking difference between the two: when an audience member asked a question, Hillary responded to him or her by name, and addressed them directly with a real answer. Trump, on the other hand, used the questions as nothing more than a diving board into his pool of egomaniacal ranting, and never even looked at the people who asked them.

And the most outrageous thing Trump said: he vowed that if he wins the election, he’ll appoint a special prosecutor to get Hillary Clinton sent to prison. For what? Who knows?

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving here. Today I went to go get my grandson from his dad’s place & I got half way there before my battery gave out. My alternator is dead for the 3rd time this year. I had to leave the car where it was and bring the battery back with me so I could charge it. I just checked it and it’s still charging.

Yet, my day has been much better than Americans who have to contemplate a Trump presidency because - voter insanity.

As long as the Republican party remains the proto-fascist dungheap that it is, Eco’s Ur-Fascism article will always remain on point.

Today’s selection is made with the Trump tapes in mind:

12. Since both permanent war and heroism are difficult games to play, the Ur-Fascist transfers his will to power to sexual matters. This is the origin of machismo (which implies both disdain for women and intolerance and condemnation of nonstandard sexual habits, from chastity to homosexuality). Since even sex is a difficult game to play, the Ur- Fascist hero tends to play with weapons - doing so becomes an ersatz phallic exercise.

Trump can’t go anywhere in his rants without saying our country is awful and that he’s the only way we can save it. I don’t know about you but if I were undecided, I’d find that to be a huge turnoff. There’s no optimism to Trump’s campaign about our country. Everything is awful, awful ,awful.

I made this comment in the last thread in answer to something Happy Warrior said about Kathy Shelton.

Happy said: Hope Kathy is proud of being funded by a pathetic little troll of a man who actually harasses rape victims and cheers political violence on.

My comment:

She probably has no idea who it was that paid for the trip. All that matters is she gets to be mentioned nationally, a little TV time and a way to get back at a Clinton.

In a way, she is getting abused again. All the “Clinton victims” are. Once the election is over they will never be heard from or thought of again.

Didn’t see your comment regarding that. I think your right. Honestly, I feel bad for her but I do think she’s getting used and doesn’t realize it. I actually started watching it again the other night. Man it’s a great movie.

Yes it is. I consider Downfall to be one of the greatest war films of all time. It’s a masterpiece with a tour de force performance by Bruno Ganz. That’s the performance he’ll always be remembered for.

No major meltdown by Trump, so half the media will give him a debate ‘win’ for that alone.

He reminds me of Anthony Hopkins who consequently also played Hitler in a movie about the Fueherbunker. But yeah it’s an amazing movie. The Hitler responds to memes aside, it’s just excellently filmed and very well acted all around. It had to be difficult as hell for Ganz to play someone like Hitler but he pulled it off amazingly.

I don’t think we can discuss this debate as citizens, take stock of it as a country, without noting that this is certainly the first time one candidate has openly threatened to jail the other candidate. Trump said openly that he would instruct the Justice Department to open a new investigation of Clinton and that he’d make sure it ended with her imprisonment. That’s something we expect it kleptocracies and thin democracies where electoral defeat can mean exile, imprisonment or death.

Such a ferocious claim, one that puts our whole constitutional order on its head, is not something that can be easily undone. That’s the ranting threat of a would-be strongman and dictator The threat itself is like a bell that can’t be un-rung. Through the course of what was often an ugly debate, I was thinking a lot of the destructiveness of this entire campaign, virtually all of which stems from Trump’s transgressive, norm-demolishing behavior. It’s a topic we’ll have to return to in the ed blog and one the country is going to need to wrestle with. None of this is going to disappear after November 8th. These are slashing wounds to the country’s political fabric that will at best leave tremendous scar tissue we’ll still see for decades.

Yep. This is the real story from tonight. Our political tradition has not seen this sort of thing since Cromwell and the Roundheads in the 1640’s.

This is not going to go away, and Trump is doing everything he can to strangle Hillary’s presidency in the crib. No matter what she does from here out, that Trump shadow will still be lurking around behind her with his followers…promising investigations, intimidation and violence.

This is 40% of the electorate that wants a dictator who will punish her and by extension all the rest of us who are not real Americans as far as they are concerned.

I feel awful for what those kids went through. It’s so interesting how children of high ranking Nazis have such different responses to their parents. Himmler’S daughter is a Neo-Nazi. Hans Frank (governor of occupied Poland), his son tours schools telling children about the horrors of Nazism and he flat out has said he hates his father.

The Atlantic:

Donald Trump’s Disastrous Debate
The Republican nominee needed to turn around his campaign. Instead, he threatened to jail his opponent.

Throughout his presidential race, Donald Trump has been the NASCAR candidate: The press and voters seem riveted by his campaign because there’s no telling when there might be a dramatic crash.

For anyone tuning in for that reason, Sunday night’s second presidential debate was just the ticket: a fiery, multi-car pileup. Trump meandered around the stage restlessly, delivered long strings of misleading statements, feuded with the moderators, and promised to prosecute a political rival if he won the race. He openly slapped down his running mate, Mike Pence, over Syria policy, saying, “He and I haven’t spoken and I disagree.” In perhaps the most surreal moment of a surreal evening, moderator Anderson Cooper had to tell a major-party nominee for president, “You bragged that you had sexually assaulted women. Do you understand that?”

I wonder whether the most under-explored story of this election is the divergence between the media’s desperate attempts to sell horse-race reporting and the voters’ increasing disinterest in that sort of fakery. It seems to me that in the age of social media and widespread availability and circulation of actual footage online the media just can’t manufacture narratives the way they used to.

“…the media just can’t manufacture narratives the way they used to.”

I still don’t think it’s occurred to network bosses that if they were to return to fact-based reporting, their ratings might increase. I remember watching Walter Cronkite on the evening news every night, and the man reported the facts. Today the emphasis is on ratings and “creating” a narrative rather than on dispensing facts. I used to subscribe to the local paper, but I stopped years ago because I could see the laziness in the paper’s reporting. Its reporters did very little to deliver accurate information to the community. Also, I don’t want to read a series of right-wing columns in a newspaper everyday, columns filled with lies, and ones where no one on staff has bothered to fact-check them. I became so frustrated with TV “news” that I stopped watching it almost 10 years ago. I refuse to have my intelligence insulted by reading/listening to sub-par reporting based on a “both sides do it” model.

Yes, she could have been sharper of wit, a bit more on top of things.

But I suppose she was disciplining herself to stay on plan. She’ trying to sell herself as the only serious and viable candidate - see all those newspaper endorsements from previously hostile-to-Democrats editorial boards.

Dems always think their people must be perfect. She had that yam towering over her, stalking her around the stage, attempting to intimidate her and then calling her a murderer & vowing to get her arrested, not to mention that so special press call before the debate even started. She should have called the SS on stage to deal with him since the moderators let him do it.

She did good - easy from an armchair in front of the TV to pick up what she missed - she picked up on enough and people could easily see who was the intelligent adult on the stage.

I truly believe the last nail in Trump will be when he loses the vote. Nothing anyone says will stop him at this stage. If it can be drawn out, hopefully more and more republicans will come down with him.

There is supposed to be a tele meeting (I think) of house republicans tomorrow - will be interesting to see the outcome of that event. Ryan is in no mans land whatever he does.

So, saying confidential, not classified would have hurt her, reinforcing stuff *was* classified. Going after the African American applicants would have been seen as being too aggressive and attacking solely to deflect attention.

She didn’t miss any chances, she put him on the back foot and spent her attention trying to connect with the voters. She didn’t have to smash him, she let him smash himself. Like others have said, she can’t put the final nail in his coffin, the voters have to. What she is doing is having him hold that nail and line it up and hold out the hammer to the voters.

holy shit

Someone was saying this debate was the Breitbart’s wet dream. Going back to 2012, they were looking for the candidate that would finally face Obama with all the stories they all believe implicitly, and Obama would just crumble. That’s what the whole exchange that led to ‘Please proceed, Governor” was about. That was really what they have been dreaming about for years. It’s one of the things they loved about Trump, the way he dominated the other candidates at the GOP Primary debates. They knew he’d be the guy who’d go there, who’d finally destroy The Evil One, whether it was Obama, or Clinton.

This time, they got ALMOST everything they wanted. They wanted to psych her out, embarrass Bill, get her to scream, cry, or otherwise fuck up badly. This was their moment, the payoff, their vindication. Trump threw the entire comments section at her.

She didn’t flinch. She didn’t quail. She didn’t even hiccup. She didn’t let his lurking phase her.

Of course she didn’t. She, like all women, has been dealing with that shit all her life.

It reminds me of how much easier it is for lefthanded fencers to do well with worse technique than righties. Righties face other righties at least 9/10 of the time, and lefties only 1/10 or less. Your usual attacks don’t work, their attacks come from a different direction, your target area is exposed to them in ways it isn’t exposed to Righties.

But Lefties face Righties 9/10 times. Their usual attacks work, their opponent’ attacks come from exactly where they’re used to etc. They know how to handle it.

That’s Hillary facing Trump. He only knows how to dominate other men. He doesn’t know how to dominate a woman whom he doesn’t already control in some way.

This ought to be a lesson to all the American evangelicals who are on the Drumpfskind train: once a populist strongman feeds the blood-lust of the masses, your religion won’t matter so much:

Once-powerful Philippines Church divided, subdued over drug killings

[…]

Opposing the drug war “in some locations becomes a dangerous job”, said Father Luciano Felloni, a priest in a northern district of the capital, Manila. At least 30 people, including a child and a pregnant woman, have been killed in his ‘barangay’, or neighborhood, where he is setting up community-based rehabilitation for drug users.

“There is a lot of fear because the way people have been killed is vigilante-style so anyone could become a target … There is no way of protecting yourself.”

Another priest, who like several others asked for anonymity because of possible reprisals, said it was risky to question the killings openly. Dozens of drug addicts and pushers are being killed every day, but anyone who criticizes Duterte’s campaign could suffer a similar fate, he said.

We’ll have to see what happens after analysis of the debate.

We won’t see real debate effect movement until Friday, but the effects of the hot mic tape should really be rolling by Tuesday. Things are moving fast, between the NYT tax release, Eichenwald’s & Fahrenthold’s reporting on the Foundation and Trump’s obsessive string of attacks on Machado it’s getting hard to pin event to effect now. The important thing is that it’s pretty much all bad for Trump.

Oh, to be a fly on the wall of the RNC conference call later today. Yes he certainly is. The decision the RNC’s going to have to make is do they go down with the ship or try to save themselves, even if that means basically giving Hillary 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue?

They’re really in a no-win scenario; there are no good outcomes here for them and I think they’ve now woken up to that fact.

The best they can hope for is salvaging the Senate races to keep a majority there. Clinton’s the next president, no matter what they try now. If they try to run Pence as Trump’s replacement, Trump’s supporters won’t go along with it. Write-in candidates are doomed to failure — too much trouble for most people and counting ballots would take ages.

I don’t feel especially sorry for the GOP right now. But they probably won’t learn from their mistakes this time around.

This ought to be a lesson to all the American evangelicals who are on the Drumpfskind train: once a populist strongman feeds the blood-lust of the masses, your religion won’t matter so much:

Once-powerful Philippines Church divided, subdued over drug killings

For most, their “religion” never mattered anyway. It has always been more important to adhere to traditional power structures in America, white entitlement, good ol’ boy network, golf buddy business meetings, local power over national power, naked racism, and ownership/domination of women and girls. Their “religion” has been engineered over the past 40 years and is based on these principles.

TrumpTV - or whatever it’ll end up being called - is Trump’s “Plan B”, and it makes perfect sense if you think about it. He’s a reality TV star used to shooting off his mouth and opining on matters of which he has no knowledge, so having his own little media empire would suit him just fine. Ailes and Bannon are a perfect fit as well - it could be Ailes’ last hurrah.

it’s all about the power: Why Are Top Evangelical Leaders Sticking by Trump?

The truth of the matter is that none of these people like Trump at all. In fact, most probably can’t stand him. The reason they are sticking with him, though, is that they know Hillary Clinton will appoint federal judges who will reduce the role of religion—and thus their power—in America

For TrumpTV, the easiest thing for him, Ailes and Bannon to do is get hold of One America News Network (OANN). That’s the groundwork laid right there; it’s national already and available in 15 million American homes. Then it needs to be expanded into major markets and the major cable carriers. Ailes built FNC from the ground up, and even though he’s much older now, I’d expect he’d do the same thing again.

Third debate? Tell you what I’d love to see.

Let’s say the RNC decides later today to re-direct spending away from Trump to the RNC’s congressional campaigns. Trump being Trump, he’ll blow a gasket, to say the least. Then another scandal or two breaks over the next 10 days or so.

Third debate? Trump launches into an all-out declaration of war against the GOP, saying he’s been “betrayed”, and urges his supporters to stay home, to boycott the election. Enough of these delusional morons decide to heed Trump’s advice.

Result - the GOP is swept out of the Senate and the House owing to angry Trump voters sitting out the election. President Clinton now has House and Senate majorities to work with. Trump burns the GOP down to the ground as a result of his scorched-earth policy, and the GOP descends into chaotic infighting as the various factions seek the upper hand, which in turn, makes them even more unappealing to the overall electorate.

The mechanisms already exist for gun shops to sell.

Here’s my general idea:
If Person A wants to sell to Person B, they drive to a local gun shop, and one of the parties pays a small fee for a background check and the shop does the check. If there is a waiting period involved, the shop can hold onto the gun while they wait.

The shop gets part of the fee, and doesn’t have to hold any extra inventory, its a continuing source of revenue too, because people are continually buying, selling and trading older weapons.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. First day commuting back to Hoboken on NJ Transit. A lot slower than usual, and the train creeped into the terminal, which makes sense given all the scrutiny over what caused the crash and the NTSB watching everything NJ Transit is doing.

TV crews were out in force, and they’ll be here for some time to come as there are regular updates on findings, progress on reopening the terminal fully, etc. Figure that will last another couple of days, and then the media will move on to the next story.

Reality is that NJ Transit has been beat down for so long trying to cobble together a budget, that it makes it difficult to plan accordingly. Capital budgets are plundered to fund operations. State assistance simply has fallen like a rock, and Gov. Christie decided that his path to gas tax funding (which only came about because of the crash in Hoboken) was to demand and get an estate tax repeal to go along with the gas tax hike, earned income break, and a sales tax break. The sales tax break is a pittance for a person attempting to offset the gas tax hike - you’d need to spend something like $40k to see a breakeven. The estate tax repeal is a giveaway to millionaires.

It would have been far more prudent to skip the sales tax cut altogether, and direct the portions that would have been cut, plus the estate tax revenue to mass transit. That would have lessened the burden on drivers and commuters, but that’s not how NJ politicians roll in the Shire.

Oh, and about that ruckus last night in St. Louis. Just who exactly is on the fence now? Seriously. Trump doesn’t even have Schoolhouse Rock level knowledge of how bills become law, or what a legislator does. So, no Trump, Clinton couldn’t just enact anything she damn well liked before she even entered the Senate to stop you from taking the very tax breaks that the tax code has allowed for years (NOLs, depreciation).

And all your talk about tax policy shows you don’t know the first thing about it. Other than what your tax accountants were able to do to reduce your tax bill to nothing because of spectacular losses. $1B in losses on personal income. That is jaw-dropping bad. Spectacularly awful.

Then, there’s the nonsensical and dangerous rheotric about throwing Hillary in prison and having special prosecutors to investigate - never mind that the FBI and DOJ said no reasonable prosecutor would touch, but you know that Rudy would relish that opportunity, because it’s self-evident he’s no longer reasonable (he’s thrown his lot with Trump after all).

As if that wasn’t dangerous enough, you had Trump (and the GOP) claiming that Hillary shouldn’t have given a defendant counsel in a heinous case of a rape. Apparently, Trump doesn’t think the 6A right to counsel is a thing. At least for those people who can’t afford it.

We were at my MiL’s house for dinner before the debate, and talk swung around to Trump. My MiL (who is constantly being fed propaganda from her wingnut friends) said that she watched the first debate and she thought ‘at least he wasn’t stupid.’

I held my tongue pretty well up to that point, but I had to tell her ‘The guy is running for president - you have to hold him to a higher standard than ‘at least he wasn’t stupid.”

i think this is what usually happens
we end up lost in the weeds with “how” and “that’ll never work because” rather than starting with the basic premises

- some people can be and are legally barred from possessing guns
- while the rest of us have a right to own/possess, no one has an obligation to sell to you
- sellers/transferers could and should be held criminally and civilly liable if they do not take reasonable (or even any) steps to confirm they are not selling to someone they shouldnt

(yes, i think sellers have some obligation to the rest of us - selling is an option and should not be done recklessly or carelessly)

i think this is what usually happens
we end up lost in the weeds with “how” and “that’ll never work because” rather than starting with the basic premises

The best you could reasonably hope for is draconian sentencing for anyone whose former gun winds up in a crime recovery—Accessory Way Before the Murder. Solutions that depend on the elevation of a better sort of human have a poor track record. If you want a fix, you must show a credible path to the goal.

That’s not how elections work. We like to use hyperbole words like destroyed and dismembered a lot, but unless you can actually kill someone or throw them in jail, no single event, not even a debate, is going to finish them.

Trump is the Daddy in what has been our right wing’s historical divorce from the rest of the country and from the world that has been occurring since 1994 or so. Up until 1994, our right wing played around with leaving, but never really felt they had to because they felt they always had the upper hand. But Clinton’s presidency really rattled them to their core. This is why they hate the Clintons so much. Bill and Hillary embodied the Change that our country has been going through on a very personal level. They want their Andy Griffith fake-1950’s world back and have left the house. Now they want a Divorce.

The American right wing constitutes about 2% of the world’s population and they want to divorce themselves from 98% of the world.

Another interesting post-debate observation: Trump only stayed around about 10 mins to meet-and-great those on the debate stage. He probably only met with < half of those people on stage. By contrast, Bill and Hillary appeared to have met with everyone and stayed with them at least 20 mins or more. Remind me again who is being painted as the insider, elitist, who is out of touch with the people?

re: #485 MsJ

I noticed that Wang is pushing for people to concentrate on down ticket.

But I think it may be too late (as it is with Drumpfskind.)

Substantially, what we are seeing is the inability of the DNC to work from the bottom up. This has been my criticism all along - that DWS and her cohorts were way too concentrated on just one prize. There really is an elitism in the national Democratic party that hampers it from connecting to a lot of people.

It’s all too obvious locally here, too. The local Democratic party has it’s controlled districts, and simply doesn’t work very much in other’s (such as Duncan The Lesser’s district.) Car Thief may be in danger locally not, in my opinion, to any great strategy by the Democratic party but simply because he has slowly, in his crusades, drifted away from his district’s real needs.

I’ve maintained my belief for several years here now, all the way back at least 8 years, but I do not believe HRC is that great of a candidate. She will probably win this year, but that is because Drumpfskind is losing by self-immolation.

I am waiting for evidence that HRC is helping the down ballot ticket.

Without going down my usual dystopic meandering, and trying to rethink what is going on in American politics, I see a lot of rural and uneducated people filled with resentment towards the urban and the well educated. That is not something that can lead us to a good place.

And the Democratic party has to embrace the problem, not pretend it won’t impact them.

Clinton’s website does, indeed, say that she wants a public option. But that would be just one option. Under a single-payer system, the government provides health care for everyone. Clinton’s web page makes it clear that there would be other payers as well.

That’s not how single-payer works. And it’s the biggest (false) argument against single-payer.

Remember, the day after the election the next round of election maneuvering begins.

This is where the tea partying GOP will kill any hopes HRC has of any of her agendas.

Even if by chance the Dems take over the Senate, they will not have enough seats to break the log jam the minority will enforce. Then come 2018 the Senate contests will favor the Republicans, and then the Senate falls back into GOP control.

HRC will be a one-term President. She will not be able to do much other than manage to keep the lights on and the seat warm for 4 years. We are set for 4 years of battles and investigations, of continuing resolutions for what is laughably called a “budget”, and likely empty Supreme Court seats at times.

Even assuming that the US avoids a recession (unlikely), 2020 will be a tough year for any politician who is an incumbent because the log-jam in DC will become increasingly unbearable.

And the turmoils of the world will not abate. The chance of a major terrorist attack somewhere in the next 4 years is high. Civil wars will continue. There is no end of warmongering over oil and religion.

I know this is sounding like an early morning rant by an old curmudgeon, but I am not very confident that the Democratic leadership is really up to the job we face.

Drumpfskind is forcing the Republicans to their day of reckoning. After this election you can bet the RNC will go back and change the primary rules once again to keep the kind of bandwagon effect that an outsider like Drumpf accomplished this year from happening again.

But I wonder what the Democratic party will do? What have they learned? The past 10 years or so has shown traditionally Democratic party districts and states lost, and I don’t see where the DNC has done the self-examination that it needs to do to address this longer view.

Mind you, there’s clear definitions of what assault is, and sexual assault.

Let’s go to the US Code:

10 U.S. Code § 920

(b)Sexual Assault.—Any person subject to this chapter who—
(1) commits a sexual act upon another person by—
(A) threatening or placing that other person in fear;
(B) causing bodily harm to that other person;
(C) making a fraudulent representation that the sexual act serves a professional purpose; or
(D) inducing a belief by any artifice, pretense, or concealment that the person is another person;
(2) commits a sexual act upon another person when the person knows or reasonably should know that the other person is asleep, unconscious, or otherwise unaware that the sexual act is occurring; or
(3) commits a sexual act upon another person when the other person is incapable of consenting to the sexual act due to—
(A) impairment by any drug, intoxicant, or other similar substance, and that condition is known or reasonably should be known by the person; or
(B) a mental disease or defect, or physical disability, and that condition is known or reasonably should be known by the person;
is guilty of sexual assault and shall be punished as a court-martial may direct.
(c)Aggravated Sexual Contact.—
Any person subject to this chapter who commits or causes sexual contact upon or by another person, if to do so would violate subsection (a) (rape) had the sexual contact been a sexual act, is guilty of aggravated sexual contact and shall be punished as a court-martial may direct.
(d)Abusive Sexual Contact.—
Any person subject to this chapter who commits or causes sexual contact upon or by another person, if to do so would violate subsection (b) (sexual assault) had the sexual contact been a sexual act, is guilty of abusive sexual contact and shall be punished as a court-martial may direct.

And sexual contact includes “the penetration, however slight, of the vulva or anus or mouth, of another by any part of the body or by any object, with an intent to abuse, humiliate, harass, or degrade any person or to arouse or gratify the sexual desire of any person.”

That’s exactly what Trump said he had done. That makes Trump a sexual predator (on top of all the horrible and disqualifying things he’s said and done before these revelations became public).

— and yes, that’s not part of the Title 18 penal code, but rather the UCMJ - just picked a law that Sessions ought to be at least somewhat familiar with and is typical as to state sex assault statutes.

It is revenge that motivates Trump’s supporters. Revenge against every woman who turned them down. Revenge against those whom they view as “beneath” them who got ahead of them. Revenge against African-Americans. Against Latinos. Against Muslims.

Against the world.

Yes, revenge against a world they feel has ignored them and not truly appreciated their greatness. And they feel that with a President Trump, they will at last be the top dogs, and then, by God, they’re going to show everyone they hate, everyone they despise, everyone “beneath” them what’s what; those “others” will be put in their place once and for all.

That’s what drives them. Their thirst for revenge and a desire to prove how great they are, because without that, their insecurities will ultimately consume them.

Okay, so enough about Trump and his asshole tendencies. My favorite Clinton line from the debate last night was when she said, “There you go again”…I was all, OMG she just went Reagan on his ass!.

It is glorious outside after a long hot summer and I choose to revel in its wonderfulness and keep positive. Mind you, there’s clear definitions of what assault is, and sexual assault.

Let’s go to the US Code:

10 U.S. Code § 920

Senator Jefferson Beauregard Sessions The Third would be less confused if Trump had said “poon-tang”.

Looks like we’re converging, but on only one facet of the issue. Any path to serious gun control requires a constitutional amendment or a Supreme Court willing to re-open Heller. Only one pathway to that, and she’s made herself vulnerable by even talking it up.

i think my suggestions work within the current 2a and heller frameworks because they basically concede them both and focus on “control” by affixing personal responsbility

what do you see differently?

Germany has certainly bitten off more than it can chew by taking on so many refugees, especially when other European countries are taking in very few or none at all.

There are two things that Trump said last night that I find utterly amazing.

The first being that he said he’d direct the Attorney General to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate the Clintons’ “situation” and that if he were in charge she’d be in prison. As others have said, that’s the way that dictators operate. Forget for a moment that the Clintons have more or less been under investigation for 25 years, and that other than Bill lying under oath in a civil trial, they haven’t been found liable for any of the allegations against them. Telling a political opponent “you’ll be in prison after I win” is flat out the most disqualifying thing any presidential political nominee for any office could possibly say in a liberal democracy.

The second is something that doesn’t seem to have gotten much traction yet (and with all the crazy, I can understand why). Trump ripped the Iran deal, calling them a state sponsor of terrorism, I believe. Then, less than twenty minutes later, he suggested that the way we approach the Syrian Civil War is by allying with Assad’s regime in Syria, Putin’s Russia, and… wait for it… Iran, to fight ISIS. His answer to a complicated war is to ally with dictators, one of whom he believes is a state sponsor of terrorism and still secretly trying to get nuclear weapons.

As I said last night, what in the actual utter fuck?

As Merkel, herself has accepted. It was always going to be a hard-sell and even if it was, in hindsight, the wrong or, more accurately, poorly-prepared decision (if for no other reason than it bolstered the right-wing and might ultimately cut her career short) it was still a matter of making a poor decision for the right reasons.

Her career has lasted for quite some time now…longer than any US President (no term limits for German Chancellor). I think Germany made a mistake in not putting an upper limit on refugees, either in terms of absolute numbers or in terms of what percentage share of overall EU refugees.

Pat Robertson: Trump was “trying to look like he’s macho” by bragging about grabbing women by the pussy.

The TV preacher argued that Trump was like the mythical Phoenix because he had performed well at the debate just days after the leak of a video tape, in which the Republican nominee bragged that he could grab women “by the pussy” without their permission because he was a star.

“A guy does something 11 years ago, it was a conversation in Hollywood where he’s trying to look like he’s macho,” Robertson said. “And 11 years after that they surface it from The Washington Post or whatever, bring it out within 30 days or so of the election and this is supposed to be the death blow and everybody rights him off, ‘Okay, he’s dead, now you’ve got to get out of the way and let Mike Pence run the campaign.’”

Pyrrhic victory at best. By getting her on the defense, he said a lot of shit that will only further hurt his campaign. Within an hour of the debate’s end, already pundits were remarking about how he promised to jail Hillary, was blaming Muslims for Islamaphobia, treating all black folks as living in inner city ghettos, and so forth. I watched the movie “Hell or High Water” yesterday. It’s really good—Jeff Bridges was excellent. It was about two west-Texas brothers who rob banks to pay off a reverse mortgage their now-deceased mother had taken out on the family farm. One brother tries very hard to keep violence to a minimum, but in one encounter a security guard fires on them. They kill him and then a citizen who tries to shoot them. A subtext was how carrying can just as likely get the “good guy” killed as the “bad guy”. I don’t know if this was the director’s intent, but it came off as fairly realistic.

That’s just one poll, but it’s one suggesting that HRC broke through the 50% level, while Trump’s sagging. Would have to see the crosstabs to know what’s going on here.

One poll is interesting, but I’m seeing some other polls showing Clinton with a solid lead.

If this poll is a herald of future polls, then two major developments have happened. First is that Clinton has managed to crack 50%, and second is 40% is no longer Trump’s floor.

FTFY.

That’s what it comes down to for misogynists. If a woman has power over them, they feel emasculated.

And POTUS? Yeah, in the USA, that’s pretty much the highest power there is. She gets elected, and we’re gonna be hearing OMG HILLARY CLINTON HAS STOLEN MY JOHN THOMAS!!! from the usual suspects, Pat Robertson being one of them among many.

Not really. Remember, what it took to keep her from becoming president was the most charismatic candidate in a really long time.

Trump isn’t a representation of what it takes for a woman to win. He’s a representation of what misogynists and white supremacists think it takes to beat her. And they are wrong.

I know this is sounding like an early morning rant by an old curmudgeon, but I am not very confident that the Democratic leadership is really up to the job we face.

You know what it sounds like to me. It sounds like you are giving up before anything is even settled. Also you are seeing everything through your age and the experiences that folks our age have gone through and allowed. I can see how that can happen.

It may be that way, but it does not need to remain that way.

There is eventually going to be a time when enough citizens in this country grow tired of how their government is being run. I think we are very near that time. I think it is all stuck between two generations. Eventually the elders are going to lose control by the numbers and much of the Republican party is going to go with them. That could break the logjam as much as anything. Hopefully it also breaks the thinking in the Democratic party that created the “we will just lose again” attitude. I am not denying it exists, I am saying it has to change.

Then all the younger people that are clamoring for big change will get their chance with their politicians. You can see and feel it coming.

My hope is that Hillary senses it too and starts things down that road by using the younger people and women, two groups that will play a big role in this election. And if she is smart, she will make everyone very aware that if they want their revolution they need revolutionaries and they come from young congress people. She needs to hammer that big time. And if she does a good job of selling that she could well turn the house around in the midterms and it may give her 8 years.

Lots of work to do. I’m 62 and I am hopeful. It may not be me, doing the change, but I am not going piss on the dreams and hopes of someone’s future by complaining about the crap my generation has put American politics through.

Some of “My Generation” died when they got old, even if they didn’t physically die. They died on this country by becoming selfish yuppie consumers that didn’t do anything for the future as they were too busy getting theirs.

My take anyway. And Trump is the epitome of the yuppie of my generation and the people that back him are all products of that thinking. There are and should be a lot of people learning about the thinking that created the current Republican party and Trump is a pure reflection of it.

I’m going to hope for the change that will come by the need for it.

About that NBC poll above…. it may actually undercount how well HRC is doing. It undersampled Latinos by a wide margin.

Again, this is a reason to not look at any one poll, but to take a bunch of polls taken during the same time period for comparison. Demographics and deviations from what’s expected to be turnout drives poll results - whether it’s that LAT poll that tracks the same group over time, or random sample polls taken regularly by AP, Reuters, PPP, Rasmussen, etc., and whoever gets the demographics right will be more likely to predict the outcome with accuracy.

Sadly yes. But I look at it like the real world.

Oftentimes men screw stuff up and it takes a woman to come in and clean up the mess, settle the children and turn it around.

And in Hillary’s case, I’m hoping she wins and then she does a nice job and demonstrates from now on it is not a bad idea to have a woman as president. In fact it might be a good thing and needed for a while.

Maybe she gets men to climb down off their high horse and get real again.

The Weekly Standard: The Debate’s Biggest Loser Was the GOP
Trump does just well enough to doom Republicans on November 8.

There is one important sense in which Donald Trump “won” the debate on Sunday night: He did not implode. He wasn’t “good,” or attractive, or knowledgeable. He was coarse and whiny and unpleasant. He lied constantly. And he became the first presidential candidate in the history of our Republic to promise that if elected he would attempt to have his opponent face criminal prosecution. Actually, he went a bit further than that, telling Clinton that if he is president, “You’d be in jail.” Which, by the by, should terrify you and be disqualifying all on its own.

But Trump didn’t have a psychotic break onstage. And clearing that bar might be enough to keep Mike Pence, Paul Ryan, and Reince Priebus from publicly disavowing his candidacy this week.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is what a win looks like for Trump these days.

We stand at a moment in history where dozens of Republican representatives, senators, and governors have not only publicly vowed not to vote for the Republican nominee but have called on him to vacate the nomination. Where four weeks before Election Day, one-in-four Republican voters want their nominee to drop out of the race. (And that number is almost certain to rise over the next week.)

This is unprecedented. And catastrophic. Before the “grab them by the pus—y” tape, Trump was already down by five points with only four weeks to go. He was behind in Florida. Ditto North Carolina. His deficit in Pennsylvania was nearly double digits.

I wish I could agree but the big winner last night was Putin. He’s succeeded where the Soviet leadership failed. He’s successfully setting up a mass movement to destabilize the United States.

I could totally imagine the Trump base in the GOP blaming back-stabbers and traitors in the party, purging the party of disloyal elemunts while electing Trump as their Fühleader.

I can see that too. The 21st Century American version of the Dolchstoßlegende.

Wow, we are all doomsday scenario-ing this morning.

I mean, I get that it’s Monday, but the world really isn’t ending, I promise.

I’m not even going to touch that type of thinking. I happen to believe there are way more people that will never let those scenarios occur.

They just don’t have the big mouths of some of the people being seen as the types that would do stuff like secede.

Yes, there is a silent majority. They can get loud fast when needed.

I’d actually thinking that Clinton might take Trump’s last comments - that Clinton is a fighter and doesn’t quit and turn that into an ad for her. She couldn’t have asked for a better quip to end on.

And that comes after Trump spent the better part of the past 6 weeks claiming that Clinton was weak, ill, and lacked sta-mi-nah.

I thought it was interesting that, on the last question, he gave what was the most direct and concise answer yet in any of the debates. Can I say something nice about her? Yes, here you go. It wasn’t just a quip, it was an acknowledgement. Not to overwork Michelle Obama’s line about going high when they go low as Hillary used it in the context of slamming Trump, but it was the first time in the last year Trump actually took a respectful tone…toward any of his opponents.

And she did a nice job of not giving him anything he can use. Don’t tell me she can’t think quick. She thought of a way not to pump his ego up and feed it to his backers.

And the 21st Century American version of the Nacht der langen Messer. Basically, rebadge and reboot of something old and very evil.

Yeah, we’re seeing that one getting started in the GOP. After the election, I figure it’s going to accelerate exponentially.

Texas will not secede. Oh there will be rumblings, but the first religion of Texas is business, and businesses here will grab the Republican party by the short hairs if anything starts happening.

Buffett hands Trump his ass once again.

Bold prediction: Trump will not react to this at all. Buffett scares him.

So Buffett last year gave away, mostly without even getting a deduction for it, more than what Forbes thinks is Trump’s entire net worth?
