Donald Trump Picks Climate Change Denier and Energy Industry Puppet to Head Environmental Protection Agency

Trump’s cabinet picks are going to wreck the world
Politics • Views: 51,615

The news from the Donald Trump Horror just keeps getting worse, every day.

Today Trump announced his pick to head the Environmental Protection Agency. Would it surprise you to learn that he’s a far right climate change denier in the pocket of the fossil fuel industries?

Scott Pruitt, a Republican, has been a key architect of the legal battle against Mr. Obama’s climate change policies, actions that fit with the president-elect’s comments during the campaign. Mr. Trump has criticized the established science of human-caused global warming as a hoax, vowed to “cancel” the Paris accord committing nearly every nation to taking action to fight climate change, and attacked Mr. Obama’s signature global warming policy, the Clean Power Plan, as a “war on coal.”

Mr. Pruitt, 48, who has emerged as a hero to conservative activists, is also one of a number of Republican attorneys general who have formed an alliance with some of the nation’s top energy producers to push back against the Obama regulatory agenda, a 2014 investigation by The New York Times revealed.

It’s no exaggeration to say that Pruitt as head of the EPA represents an existential threat to the future of planet Earth. This is so bad.

It’s not like we need clean water to drink or clean air to breathe? Trump’s cabal seems to think that the world belongs to them to exploit and to ruin - shifting the burdens to those who can’t afford them.

This is just another example of why anyone who thought that Trump would have been better than Clinton on the environment [ed: or anything else] was suffering from a rectal cranial inversion.

From Downstairs:

So who is the new nominated EPA Administrator?

Scott Pruitt, the AG in Oklahoma! Defender of the environment?

From Wiki:

Pruitt has also sued the United States Environmental Protection Agency on behalf of Oklahoma utilities unwilling to take on the burdens of additional regulation of their coal-fired plants, and criticized the agency in a congressional hearing. [19][20] This is one of several lawsuits Pruitt has failed against the EPA.[21]

Fuck 2016, and Fuck tRump.

Trump tapped a guy who will make sure that the rest of the country benefits from oil and gas exploration the way Oklahoma has.

You know - by the shaking it experiences on a very regular basis. And the oil spills. And the bad air. And water quality degradation, because farmers don’t need clean water or air for their crops either.

Trump’s tapping guys who will roll back fuel economy standards for cars (or further delay them - claiming it saves people money, when it does no such thing in the long run), etc.

Yeah, a guy who reps for extractive industries is now defending the Clean Air and Water Acts, CRCLA, SARA, the transport of HazWaste, including nuke waste, and the regulation of coal companies who love mountaintop removal mining.

What could possibly go wrong?

Shake shake shake Sinora, shake it all the time:

earthquake.usgs.gov

Oklahoma quake map - last 30 days. There’s a whole lot of shaking going on - and it’s directly attributable to fracking and injecting wastewater into the earth. Energy companies have gone out of their way to prevent state and fed authorities from knowing what’s in the water that they’re injecting as part of fracking (claiming trade secrets among other things).

And for those keeping score, the GWB EPA screwed up royally, especially when it came to air quality safety after 9/11. It had former NJ Gov. Whitman at the helm, and they fucked up. She admits as much now. But back then, they were adamant there wasn’t any problem with the air - even though you could taste the smell from miles away. It was that potent and pungent every time the wind shifted direction.

So, if GWB EPA officials are saying this is bad news, you know it is going to be yet another shit show.

New Jersey Will No Longer Collect Loans From Families of Dead Students

Last July, an investigation from ProPublica and The New York Times found that New Jersey’s student loan agency aggressively sought repayment of loans with already onerous terms, even after some of the recipients had died. The efforts had traumatized grieving families, and forced some into financial ruin.

The state loan agency, known formally as the Higher Education Student Assistance Authority, is responsible for roughly $1.9 billion in outstanding loans.

The agency has not yet indicated whether it will dig up the dead deadbeats for the gold in their teeth.

Or, you could just call it “Survivor”

The president-elect said he was paid a visit a day earlier by Mark Burnett, the executive producer of “The Apprentice,” the reality show that helped make the president-elect a household name. Mr. Trump told the crowd that Mr. Burnett proposed reinventing the inauguration with a helicopter taking off from New York City, according to an attendee.

Mr. Burnett, who is known for producing shows like “Survivor,” “The Voice” and “Shark Tank” as well, also told Mr. Trump that he should consider a parade up Fifth Avenue.

K-K-K-lassy.

We had friends who were bankrupted by that, while dealing with the loss of the son, who was still in college. They were charged with the full amount of the loans if he had finished his entire term. They were devastated in more ways that one. Horrible!!!

54
electrotek  Dec 7, 2016 • 12:59:15pm

Piggybacking from the NPR article:

And then suddenly he turned to me and asked in an accusatory tone what I thought of Charlie Hebdo.

I must have had this confused look on my face — because I was wondering how on Earth we got from Romney to France. But I sputtered something about being a journalist, and that I don’t think killing journalists is a good idea.

He then went further. He asked me: When are all of you Muslims going to have your “million-man Muslim march” to condemn terrorism? He said intently, almost friendly — it was what we “needed to do.”

Anytime some wingnut mentions that to me, I ask them when was the last time you denounced Norwegian terrorist Anders Breivik and his slaughter of children at a youth camp to fight Islam? Let alone conservatives holding a Million-Man march instead of taking refuge in conspiracy theories because they can’t handle the fact that their own are just as capable of violence? Besides, not like Trump supporters haven’t threatened their fair share of journalists either.

Either way, if he had mentioned Charlie Hebdo to me, I would make sure I have a cover of their recent issue lampooning Cheeto Jesus to turn the tables and ask him what he thinks of that.

By the same token, if Boeing doesn’t play nice, who builds the bombers and aircraft, missiles, and rockets they are doing? Your options are Lockheed Martin or Boeing for aerospace. And if one has won the contract, you can’t just give it to the other without getting hit with a ton of extra costs.

It’s not like you can cancel a contract and those costs aren’t going to get absorbed by someone. Corporate shareholders shouldn’t be happy about this - whether they’re institutional investors or the guy on the street who watches his 401k. Trump games will cost both dearly.

This Fair was held six weeks after the aerial bombing of the Basque village of Guernica, after which Picasso completed this monumental canvas. The city was completely destroyed by an air raid on the 29th April 1937. It was claimed that the bombing had not been done by Nationalist forces, but by the Condor Legion of the German air force under the direction of Franco’s government. Picasso’s ‘Guernica’ became an international symbol of the Spanish Republican cause. This portrait forms part of David ‘Chim’ Seymour’s on-going documentation of the Spanish Civil War. © #DavidSeymour/#MagnumPhotos

What I’ve discovered over the years is that churches tend to back the abuser, and not the victims. And that’s just one problem. Too many churches treat women like dirt. Need I go on?

The confirmation hearings are going to be a sh*tshow of conspiracy nutloons trotting out hoax after hoax presented as truth. Sadly, I think the American public are so confused or disinterested about any sort of real evidence, real data, or simple facts and truth at this point these hearings will likely be a rubber stamp.

As far as I am concerned, America is now a non-scientific, fear-based agent of harm towards the world. The brain drain out of the country will be the next step down the sh*thole into mediocrity, similar to Russia right now.

I would imagine so. However, neither a dancer from a skin bar nor Linda McMahon have any business in the cabinet. So I seem to recall when looking into this a while back is that there is no more abuse by clergy than by any other group that tends to have close association with children(teachers, youth groups, coaches etc.) and the poor handling of it seams to be ubiquitous as well.

I guess clergy may be held to a higher standard, because well…they are clergy.

Read this. Take the time.

I grew up knowing that my great-grandfather smuggled guns into the Bialystok ghetto for the resistance, which staged an armed uprising there in August 1943. As an adult, researching a book about collaboration and resistance, using my own family history, I found out why my great-grandfather had been in a position to arm the resistance: he was one of the leaders of the Bialystok Judenrat, the Nazi-appointed Jewish council that ran the ghetto.

My great-grandfather’s story was at once an extreme and a typical example. Criminal regimes function in part by forcing the maximum number of subjects to participate in the atrocities. For nearly a century, individuals in various parts of the Western world have struggled with the question of how, and how much, we should engage politically and personally with governments that we find morally abhorrent.

With the election of Donald Trump—a candidate who has lied his way into power, openly embraced racist discourse and violence, toyed with the idea of jailing his opponents, boasted of his assaults on women and his avoidance of taxes, and denigrated the traditional checks and balances of government—this question has confronted us as urgently as ever. After I wrote a piece about surviving autocracy, a great many people have asked me about one of my proposed rules: “Do not compromise.” What constitutes compromise? How is it possible to avoid it? Why should one not compromise?…

…In Bialystok ghetto, my great-grandfather’s responsibility in the Judenrat was to ensure that the ghetto was supplied with food. He ran the trucks that brought food in and took garbage out, he ran the canteen and supervised the community gardens that a group of young socialists planted. He also discouraged the young socialists from trying to organize a resistance movement: it would be of no use and would only jeopardize the ghetto’s inhabitants. It took him almost two years to change his mind about the resistance efforts, as he slowly lost hope that the Judenrat, by generally following the rules and keeping the ghetto inhabitants in line, would be able to save at least some of them.

As in other ghettos, the Judenrat was ultimately given the task of compiling the lists of Jews to be “liquidated.” The Bialystok Judenrat accepted the job, and there is every indication that my great-grandfather took part in the process. The arguments in defense of producing the list, in Bialystok and elsewhere, were pragmatic: the killing was going to occur anyway; by cooperating, the Judenrat could try to reduce the number of people the Nazis were planning to kill (in Bialystok, this worked, though in the end the ghetto, like all other ghettos, was “liquidated”); by compiling the lists, the Judenrat could prevent random killing, instead choosing to sacrifice those who were already near death from disease or starvation. These were strong arguments. There is always a strong argument.

But what if the Jews had refused to cooperate?

(Sociologist Johan) Galtung later began to apply his model to the United States. In 1996, he wrote a scientific paper published by George Mason University’s Institute for Conflict Analysis & Resolution warning that “the USA will soon go the same way as [previous] imperial constructions… decline and fall.”

Fascism?

But the main book setting out Galtung’s fascinating forecast for the US is his 2009 book, The Fall of the American Empire—and then What?

The book sets out a whopping 15 “synchronizing and mutually reinforcing contradictions” afflicting the US, which he says will lead to US global power ending by 2020—within just four years. Galtung warned that during this phase of decline, the US was likely to go through a phase of reactionary “fascism”.

He argued that American fascism would come from a capacity for tremendous global violence; a vision of American exceptionalism as the “fittest nation”; a belief in a coming final war between good and evil; a cult of the strong state leading the fight of good against evil; and a cult of the “strong leader”

Now, a group of advisors to President-elect Donald Trump on Native American issues wants to free those resources from what they call a suffocating federal bureaucracy that holds title to 56 million acres of tribal lands, two chairmen of the coalition told Reuters in exclusive interviews.

The group proposes to put those lands into private ownership - a politically explosive idea that could upend more than century of policy designed to preserve Indian tribes on U.S.-owned reservations, which are governed by tribal leaders as sovereign nations.

It’s very prescient. I believe him.

Consider the following passage WRT if when Trump greedily grabs First Nations land (and the violent war that will inevitably result as the country is further torn apart):

But this global collapse, also has potential domestic implications. Galtung warned that the decline of American power on the world stage would probably have a domestic impact that would undermine the internal cohesion of the United States:

“As a trans-border structure the collapse I am thinking of is global, not domestic. But it may have domestic repercussion, like white supremacists or even minorities like Hawaiians, Inuits, indigenous Americans, and black Americans doing the same, maybe arguing for the United States as community, confederation rather than a ‘union’.”

While I take issue with calling her a co-founder of the WWE (yes, she and Vince owned the company that bought the company that his father and grandfather built, but the product was long established)… it’s not entirely surprising. Trump has been playing the spoils game - that’s why a donor has been tapped for the Dept of Education. And the McMahons have donated a hefty amount to Trump. On the bright side, she may at least be fairly qualified for the job, given the growth of the WWE since 1980.

I just tried reading some of her arguments. She argues that the forensic evidence doesn’t support the victim’s claims, and that the detectives went out searching for other potential victims. What I don’t understand is why the cops would so vigorously investigate one of their own? We’ve seen time and time again, that cops and prosecutors tend to take it easy on other cops. And he maintained his innocence throughout (but of course, Red was the only guilty man in Shawshank).

Of course, the real point of her latest endeavor (shockingly enough) is to show that SJW are hypocrites for not even listening to her arguments. I don’t know anything about the case, beyond what I’ve read in the last half hour or so, so I can’t really say whether her arguments actually have merit. But I’ve seen enough of Malkin over the years to be skeptical of anything she says.

Can anyone imagine him giving the medal of freedom out? Can anyone imagine him doing any of the traditional PR and people oriented things a President has always done?

I watched the medal of freedom ceremony a couple of weeks ago. The President eloquently explained why he chose each recipient. I thought of combover giving the medal to people like The Nuge and Chachi. And it made me cry.

Hah, Uncle Ted and Baio getting the PMoF will be pretty damn tame, considering how bad it may get over the next four years, at least. If you will, think about this very distinct possibility: Richard Spencer, Pam Geller, or someone in that circle receiving the PMoF from President Tribblehair.

Makes me want to sob uncontrollably while projectile vomiting…

Linda McMahon picked to be Small Business administrator

Besides the obvious WWE connection, what many people don’t know is that WWE “donated” millions of dollars to Trump’s “charity”:

sportsgrid.com

In return for these “donations”, Trump over the years has appeared on WWE programming.

It was a minor scandal that didn’t get the attention it deserves. What WWE did allowed them to write off the money as a gift for charity, and why Trump didn’t have to call it income.

Though it was clearly quid-pro-quo for Trump appearing on the for-profit WWE products.

This is pay-for-play government at its most crass.

Yet where is the outrage?

electrotek  Dec 7, 2016 • 5:45:58pm

Great piece in the Wall Street Journal about the need for Asia to stand up for the ruthlessly-persecuted Rohingyas. This part of the piece says it all:

Neglecting their plight, I feared, would entrench the segregation of Rakhine state along ethnic and religious lines, breed conflict, and potentially radicalize a desperate minority. And it would not be Burma’s problem alone; security concerns and an outflow of refugees would implicate the entire region.

I wish I was wrong. Two months ago, a small group of alleged Rohingya militants stormed a Burmese border post in the town of Maungdaw, near Bangladesh. They staged several more attacks in the following days and weeks, killing a number of security personnel and looting weapons. This is the first time in decades that any Rohingya are suspected of taking up arms.

The Burmese military responded in force, killing dozens of suspected militants. In some cases, it burned homes in a security-clearance operation. Human-rights groups and some of the thousands of Rohingya who have fled to Bangladesh in recent weeks have said that the military response is indiscriminate and excessive, with disturbing reports of mass killings and rape.

The security operation also prevented the United Nations and other humanitarian agencies from providing lifesaving aid to tens of thousands of Rohingya. They depend on that aid because, being stateless, they have no regular access to livelihoods.
