Okay look. It’s a tough time. Yes fuck 2016. But—-January 1st it’s 2017. By January 21st we must have our shit together. Find a way. Call a friend. Help a friend get there, just because we must. Some of us have strength, impossible to depress. Some of us have serious writing skills. Some of us might have some resources like a little money, some connections to power, some ability to record or edit or pull a rally together. Support one another so we can #Resist

Posted downstairs, didn’t want it to get missed…

“…A radical change to that system is now coming — and it looks like one that Vladimir Putin and Qatar’s emir might well admire. An amendment quietly inserted into the annual National Defense Authorization Act by Republican House leaders would abolish the broadcasting board and place VOA, RFE/RL and other international news and information operations under the direct control of a chief executive appointed by the president. The new executive would hire and fire senior media personnel and manage their budgets…”

He should. He stole Joe’s ‘Walk Away’ and used it as his campaign song, until Joe’s lawyer told him to knock it off in a hilarious manner.

Regarding Graham and the few Republican politicians calling for an investigation into Russia fucking with our election, I would be heartened by that news except that the past has taught me that the only reason Republicans express an interest in something that Democrats do is so they can embrace and extinguish it. IMO they are probably pissed off that Trump won’t play the game and give himself some cover from criticism.

Don’t count on Republicans for a damned thing other than a knife in the back.

Maneuvering a new reality for US journalism

When Donald Trump ditched his press pool twice within days of being elected, and launched a series of Twitter attacks on The New York Times, a lot of you sounded surprised. As if you expected him to become a different person once the anointing oil of the Electoral College had touched his brow. Of course there was nothing surprising about his conduct. Rule number 1 of surviving autocracy, as Masha Gessen reminds us, is “Believe the Autocrat.”…

The challenge is to maintain a tough, independent, journalistic politics, a politics of accountability, equity and the rule of law without straightforwardly aligning with the partisan opposition…This is a tough line to walk, because people on both sides of the political divide actually want you to fail at it. But it is among your most important tasks.

OT: Always check the Mapquest or Google Maps printout if you rely on that for instructions to get where you’re going.

My wife and I arrived in the Sacramento area a day early (by the way, who ordered up a fifty-mile traffic jam in the Sierras).

Diligently following the printed instructions to our motel in West Sacramento, we arrived at the police department in Sacramento.

Turns out the address for the motel in West Sacramento, even though it was correctly entered, generates a map to the police department in Sacramento.

Having never been to California, and some sixteen miles away from where we were supposed to be, we wound up driving around for some time until we got where we were supposed to be going.

The instructions went awry where they had us get on Interstate 5 south. The correct instructions would have had us stay on Interstate 80.

And dayum, Interstate 80 in this area is wide enough to land a 747 on.

TruthFeed: British Diplomat “I’ve Met The Wikileaks Informant and They’re NOT Russian”

I have watched incredulous as the CIA’s blatant lie has grown and grown as a media story - blatant because the CIA has made no attempt whatsoever to substantiate it. There is no Russian involvement in the leaks of emails showing Clinton’s corruption. Yes this rubbish has been the lead today in the Washington Post in the US and the Guardian here, and was the lead item on the BBC main news. I suspect it is leading the American broadcasts also.

A little simple logic demolishes the CIA’s claims. The CIA claim they “know the individuals” involved. Yet under Obama the USA has been absolutely ruthless in its persecution of whistleblowers, and its pursuit of foreign hackers through extradition. We are supposed to believe that in the most vital instance imaginable, an attempt by a foreign power to destabilise a US election, even though the CIA knows who the individuals are, nobody is going to be arrested or extradited, or (if in Russia) made subject to yet more banking and other restrictions against Russian individuals? Plainly it stinks. The anonymous source claims of “We know who it was, it was the Russians” are beneath contempt.

As Julian Assange has made crystal clear, the leaks did not come from the Russians. As I have explained countless times, they are not hacks, they are insider leaks - there is a major difference between the two. And it should be said again and again, that if Hillary Clinton had not connived with the DNC to fix the primary schedule to disadvantage Bernie, if she had not received advance notice of live debate questions to use against Bernie, if she had not accepted massive donations to the Clinton foundation and family members in return for foreign policy influence, if she had not failed to distance herself from some very weird and troubling people, then none of this would have happened.

Turns out this dude frequently apppears on good ol’ Alex Jones’s shows…….

Basically, if the DNC had fixed the race so that Bernie would be nominated, then nobody would have leaked DNC emails to the press. Because we’re to believe that nobody would have worked to kneecap a Bernie Sanders presidential campaign and would it have been a clean campaign past the convention.

If you believe that shit, then you obviously still believe Santa is coming to bring you toys in two weeks for being a good little “progressive.”

Well, when we were in Truckee, my wife wanted to stop at a grocery store. I wondered about all the vegetables she bought (carrots, potatoes, a turnip, spices and herbs).

As we continued on I-80 into the Sierras, she whipped out a whetstone and started sharpening knives, then peeling vegetables in the car.

And then it hit: We are approaching Donner Summit. I said “Hell, no! I am not your dinner!”

Flipping into a rest area near the summit, I went screaming into the woods with my wife chasing after me with a machete. She was yelling, “But it’s for peeling bananas. What did you think I was going to use it for?” (::

Better question is what does Mike and other wingnuts see as “alignment” with Russia? And how would such be beneficial to the US? Does he think that Russian efforts to influence the elections of states bordering it, including a clandestine effort to poison a challenger to their preferred candidate, is something we should be supporting? How about Russia’s efforts to reinforce regimes that are favorable to Russian power, such as the efforts to put down rebellion in Syria by bombing civilian targets, is that something that the wingnuts say we should be supporting? “Alignment” is rather a moot point when the dictator you’re wanting us to cozy up to does not share power, he wields it to his own ends and his ends never intersect with our own.

Short but sweet: If you think Russia has any interest in stopping ISIS for any other reason than because they present a danger to Baby Assad, you’re fucking nuts.

I grew up in an America that deeply mistrusted the Soviet Union. Republicans and conservatives (which were not synonymous terms then) HATED Soviet Russia. Reagan did the Nixon thing and managed to normalize relations with the Soviets, and then Reaganites took credit for the collapse of USSR from within. Even so, there was still a tacit understanding by everyone in American politics that the Russia Federation was NOT our ally in any true sense of the word, any more than China is our ally. We’re antagonists, because our visions of the “world order” are entirely different from one another. With Putin in control, those antagonisms are not going away anytime soon.

Now, I am living in some kind of alternate universe in which Republicans and conservatives are now totally down with being allies of Russia, buddies even. Rage Furby and Cernovich are but two minor examples. Russia is no longer our great antagonist, but our greatest ally. WTF? How did that ever happen?

Why should we align with Russia? What could we possibly gain? If anything, we’d end up the losers.

Targetpractice  Dec 11, 2016 • 10:31:37pm

See, here’s the thing: Bullies (which Trump and Putin both are) do not share power, they do not work together, they do not find common ground, or anything of the sort. They dominate, they enforce their will, and those they can’t intimidate they will use violence against. Bullies may make temporary alliances, but only when there is a mutual threat to both, and even then they never stop looking for a way to gain the upper hand over their “ally.”

So Trump and Putin may shake hands and act like they’re buddies, but that’s bullshit and they both know it. Putin has Trump by the balls and he will squeeze any time Don gets out of line and presents a danger to Russia’s interests. And it’s in Russia’s interests for us to “defeat” IS and any other group that springs up from it. Why? Because they present a threat to his vassal states in the Middle East. Plus the damage we’re going to do ourselves to that end, whether it be diplomatic, economic, or political further weakens our hand while strengthening his.

Any alliance between Trump and Putin would not be between equals. Putin is both very intelligent and very ruthless. Trump would be like putty in his hands, and his pro-Russian advisors are not going to see through any Russian trickery, either.

FTM, most of the world’s other national leaders could mold Trump into whatever shape they like. Xi Jinping has been in local, regional and national government all of his adult life. No.

If Trump and his Clown Car have their way, with the rubber stamping of the Republican Congress, America will become a shadow of its postwar self, no longer the primary bulwark against Russia and China across the world, but a willing participant (or enabler) of Russian and Chinese exploitation of every country they want. One of the commentariat at another blog I read:

. One question that keeps coming to my mind is WHY Jill Stein popped up at that RT anniversary dinner in Moscow sitting at the same table with both Putin and Flynn. I can’t any longer think it was mere coincidence. When she insisted on a recount of various states, that seemed a good thing - until she pitched a fit when the Clinton campaign joined in. I am too out of the loop to see the long game here, but I think there IS one. I just can’t suss it out.

Does Putin have anything, or is Jill just a useful idiot? Don’t answer that.

There goes their argument about Saudi Arabia when use it as a cudgel against Clinton when it comes to LGBT rights.

We all know how Russia is when it comes to homophobia, and this at the state and societal level: it is NOT friendly to LGBT groups at all. So how can they attack Clinton for its alleged donations from Saudi Arabia to the Clinton Foundation when they are openly embracing a nation that is known to be extremely hostile to homosexuality?

It makes perfect sense if you assume that Putin is pulling his strings. A trade war between the US and China only helps Russia by creating a ready market for Chinese goods, as well as offering them a wealth of energy resources from Russia’s own supplies. Plus Putin could make entreaties to our regional allies, hurting their confidence in us and possibly turning local opinion against us. If Trump provokes a shooting war, then our allies find themselves in danger of Chinese aggression. If he abandons Taiwan to Beijing, then our allies begin to question if they can really count on our help when Beijing starts moving into their waters.

re: #65 Targetpractice

I agree with this analysis. China and Russia are barely on speaking terms, and Putin could easily play China against the USA with the cooperation of clueless Trump.

In the dim times of America history, there were such creatures as conservative democrats (small d), but from the 1950s onward, they have dwindled in numbers to a virtually non-existent species. Now, if you asked a conservative if they thought it would be better to make the presidency a lifetime appointment, they would probably agree — as long as it was one of theirs receiving the appointment.

Trump’s feeble mind cannot distinguish among political, economic and diplomatic agreements. He considers every agreement a “deal” with a winner and a loser. This kind of simplistic thinking will lead us into some really deep, deep trouble. As I said above, Xi Jinping is a very intelligent and canny man. Putin likewise is intelligent and even more ruthless than Xi. If Trump seriously thinks he can out-negotiate either of these guys, he’s got another thing coming.

If Trump were really as good a businessman and “dealmaker” as he says is, I would be more confident . In fact, Trump is a shitty businessman and nearly every deal he’s made, *he* has ended up the loser.

I’m trying to stay optimistic, but we may well witness the demise of the USA as a major player on the world stage within the next decade.

The People’s Bank of China, which essentially a state-owned bank, is one of the lenders of $950 million to Trump for an office tower on Avenue of the Americas in Manhattan. nytimes.com

While the PBOC has offices in Taiwan, it has little political leverage there, since Taiwan’s banking system is independent of the mainland’s. OTOH, bankers on both sides of the Taiwan Strait probably talk to each other a lot, and the PBOC could be advising their Taiwanese colleagues that Trump is a serious credit risk. I can believe that.

If Beijing were telling the Taiwan government to bar Trump from doing business there, Taiwan would just tell them to shove off, especially with Tsai in office now.

Frankly, I think Trump is trying to use the One China Policy as a bargaining chip for trade concessions, or military concessions, or something. Everything he says in that BBC clip is sheer bullshit. He speaks as if the OCP were imposed by China on the USA, when in fact it was a joint agreement involving the USA and the mainland.

The position of the United States, as clarified in the China/Taiwan: Evolution of the “One China” Policy report of the Congressional Research Service (date: July 9, 2007) is summed up in five points:

The United States did not explicitly state the sovereign status of Taiwan in the three US-PRC Joint Communiques of 1972, 1979, and 1982.
The United States “acknowledged” the “One China” position of both sides of the Taiwan Strait.
US policy has not recognized the PRC’s sovereignty over Taiwan;
US policy has not recognized Taiwan as a sovereign country; and
US policy has considered Taiwan’s status as undetermined. U.S. policy has considered Taiwan’s status as unsettled.

He’s lying about there being no tariffs on Chinese goods coming into the USA, and hefty tariffs on American goods coming into China. politifact.com

The devaluation nonsense suggests that China is punishing the USA specifically, which is untrue. China devalued the yuan rather sharply at the beginning of this year, but later pledged to restrict its value against world markets as the country endeavored to make the yuan a reserve currency. Trump is also ignoring the growing strength of the dollar against other currencies, including the yuan.

The “massive fortress” in the South China Sea is an airstrip and refueling station for ships, studded with radar systems. It’s a concern, to be sure, but not a serious military threat.

China has agreed to additional sanctions against North Korea, following Kim’s continued nuclear and missile tests. Despite what Trump says, China is trying to control North Korea — for its own reasons, to be sure — but it is not giving Kim free rein as Trump suggests.

He is so hopelessly misinformed, or convinced of his own unerring truth, that I was momentarily left speechless watching that clip.

Here is a very clear analysis of China’s currency valuation process from June, from the radical leftist publication, US News & World Report. It basically pokes several holes in Trump’s currency manipulation balloon.

usnews.com

For the Chinese, however, it must be particularly galling to hear accusations of currency manipulation since, succumbing to pressure from Western countries, they have already massively appreciated their currency since 2005.

Since June 2005, following more than a decade of a fixed exchange rate of 8.27 yuan per dollar (when it was indeed clearly undervalued) the Chinese have gradually appreciated their currency to as high as 6.1 RMB per dollar in 2015.

The exchange rate is currently 6.916 to the dollar, but that also reflects the strength of the dollar, not just efforts by China to devalue the yuan.

Finished viewing the last episode of season 1 of 3%, which on the whole I found intriguing, though it also has some weaknesses (I think the plot got a bit lost in the middle of the series.)

Yet more telling are the ratings and “reviews” on IMDB:

imdb.com

For my age group there is a significant difference between male and female viewers. Because it has a bit of a feel of a soap-opera perhaps it appeals to female viewers more, as the substance of the show deals more with relationships than plot.

It should be watched in the original language, and a couple of the bad reviews suggest it was the English dubbed version which gave them problems.

Anyway, the premise and plot have a certain Randian, and even Trumpian (except in one important difference) elemental character.

The question is: what makes one deserving of the good things in life? Is there some inherent quality in some individuals that makes them more deserving than others?

One disgruntled reviewer writes:

… this is some p.c.-stuff disguised as a sci-fi-story …

Besides my quick dismissal of anyone who complains about “p.c.”, the reviewer (who only claims to have watched the first episode) misses the more subtle social commentary, perhaps because the more obvious social commentary is so strongly put forward in the show. The portrayal (through the entire 8 episodes) is, as one one reviewer put it, more Lord Of The Flies as overall the view of humanity in the show is pretty ambivalent about whether one group of people are better than another.

And here is what gets me back to why I think this show is appropriate in the Trump epoch - it’s dystopian but freely passes out the blame to everyone. There are no real knights in shining armor, and I think that may bother more of the disgruntled viewers than any of the commenters at IMDB have been willing to confess.

Substantially, it is my assertion, the election of Trump is the result of a society that is turning very cynical after the loss of their cherished beliefs. We are not (yet) in a physical dystopia, but there is an existential malaise that affects our society, and that is what is making the harvest ripe for the conmen.

re: #90 sagehen

Does he know enough to deliberately lie, or is he just making it up as he goes along?

I’m going with the latter. He’s not a reader, has a short attention span, only interested in stuff that interests him personally (such as news about himself). He remembers what the last person who spoke to him said. So, if Flunky A said, “If the president of Taiwan calls, talk to her, but don’t tell anyone,” and Flunky B said, “If the president of Taiwan calls, it’s OK to talk to her,” Trump would follow B’s advice, not remembering A’s.

OTOH, he tends to remember things that were true several months or years ago, but are no longer. For example, China’s devaluation of its currency, which was a big thing in 2015, but not so much now. He forgets (conveniently? who can say?) that China is now a member of the WTO and has to abide by tariff agreements, and the IMF has accepted the yuan as a candidate for a world reserve currency, which means China can’t devalue the yuan outside certain parameters.

Former CIA man talks to The Guardian about Trump and Russia.
theguardian.com

Carle, the retired CIA officer, said Trump’s temperament had played into Russia’s hands and put the president-elect on a collision course with the CIA.

He said: “Look, in my professional assessment as an intelligence officer, Trump has a reflexive, defensive, monumentally narcissistic personality, for whom the facts and national interest are irrelevant, and the only thing that counts is whatever gives personal advantage and directs attention to himself.

He is about the juiciest intelligence target an intelligence office could imagine. He groans with vulnerabilities. He will only work with individuals or entities that agree with him and build him up, and he is a shockingly easy intelligence ‘target’ to manipulate.”

Were Trump an intelligence officer himself, Carle said, “he would be removed and possibly charged with having accepted the clandestine support of a hostile power to the harm of the United States”.

Emphasis mine.

People like this will convince themselves that they do not “deserve” health care, that they are “unworthy” and it is their own fault for not “working harder” to pull themselves up by their bootstraps. This is what the GOP (Ryan) tells them.

Slavery allowed the wealthy to get wealthier without having to contribute themselves. To use a term I got from Adam Smith, they were rentiers. Today, the equivalent would be those whose earnings are entirely from capital gains.

I don’t think Obama is going to prevent Trump from becoming president. I do think Obama will release something that will do significant damage to Trump, and will make it easier for us to keep up pressure on Trump and Company. Implying that Russia owns the Republican party will be a good start because we can use that as a wedge between those conservatives that do care about this country (and there are many) and those that care only about their rule.

So, hypothetical question:

The CIA gets intelligence that ISIS has declared Trump properties worldwide as primary targets.

How does a Trump administration handle such a threat?

Does Trump’s administration hide the threat from Trump?

Does the Trump administration warn people to stay away from those properties? This would cut into Trump’s profits, so that seems unlikely.

Do they blow off the intelligence, since they claim the CIA is incompetent?

Does Trump try to order the military to guard his properties? Don’t think too many governments would allow American military presence to guard private property.

Would Trump attempt to use overwhelming force (nuclear weapons) to try to stop ISIS? Or demand boots on the ground, putting American military lives in danger?

The scenario doesn’t seem that unlikely to me. And if it happens, the Trump administration response could land us in a war. Scary times.

That’s not only hypothetical, it’s 110% plausible.

Trump’s properties (both his and those licensed to carry his name) are all sitting ducks. And he’s already blowing off intelligence briefings so that pattern is established to begin with.

Bullshit artists like Lumpy and Ducklips are already beginning to force the fascist narrative that “IF YOU DON’T SUPPORT THE TRUMP, YOU AREN’T UHMERICAN!!1!!!11!!!eleventy!!!”, so we know that they will publicly target and humiliate into submission any opponents to a vanity plate war, regardless of how absolutely unpopular it is from the get-go.

They’re already creating a breeding ground for a violent reaction nationwide, and simply don’t care that it literally could destroy the country irreparably.

I disagree. Part of the “logic” behind terrorism is to get governments to over-react, turning citizens against their government. We see this in the responses to 9-11. Citizen’s start demanding the government protect them from future attacks. The government responds by creating a police state. Look at how the so-called Patriot act has played out. As soon as people started to realize the government could be spying on them, the backlash started.

And we all know that Trump would over-react, bigly, because it’s his interests that are being threatened. And that over-reaction could play to the terrorist’s advantage.

Heck, even the threat would result in Trump freaking out, even if no attacks are actually planned or executed.

I see where you’re coming from, and I would ordinarily agree. In this specific case, I would think an attack on “Trump properties” would be more of a galvanizing event than a destabilizing. Look at what we’ve seen of how Trump plans to govern and line his pockets. The one thing that would make him buckle down on ISIS is a threat to his bank accounts, imho. I can’t imagine anything that would make him pay more attention to the intel briefings other than them being about ISIS targeting his golf courses.

Nice to have a semi-productive day at home for a change. Got a present for my son sorted out, finished arguing with the healthcare marketplace for next year (though I have no clue where I’m going to find the $53 a month for it) and have lunch started. Pot of rice in the cooker, some sliced up polska kielbasa with corn and green beans (had partial cans in the fridge to get used) simmering while the rice cooks. A nice lunch for a cold day like today.

I work for the evil too big to fail bank on the tech side and the people I’ve talked to (all techies, of no importance in the scale of things) think what the bank’s attorneys are trying to do here is crazy. And here we go

Hillary Clinton’s former campaign chairman and current adviser says that the campaign backs demands from 10 members of the Electoral College to receive an intelligence briefing on conclusions about whether foreign governments intervened in the election.

“The bipartisan electors’ letter raises very grave issues involving our national security,” John Podesta said in a statement Monday.”Electors have a solemn responsibility under the Constitution and we support their efforts to have their questions addressed.”

The letter posted on Medium Monday morning also said that the electors “will separately require from Donald Trump conclusive evidence that he and his staff and advisors did not accept Russian interference, or otherwise collaborate during the campaign, and conclusive disavowal and repudiation of such collaboration and interference going forward.”

My opinion is that the improved seeds caused the increase in cotton production. The slave torture was just for lulz.

I read Ed Baptist’s book. His argument wasn’t just about seeds. It was a very densely written argument about how white Southern slave owners monetized slavery. I strongly recommend it, because it’s not just about seeds. Others are proably greatly offended by Baptist’s word choices. He doesn’t call where slaves lived “plantations,” he calls them “slave labor camps.” He really sticks the knife into the legendary old genteel South. And then twists it.

Again, highly recommended.

And it was Billy Bush who egged him on to say dirty and bad stuff. After all, Trump is just a “teenage boy” who was nothing but a victim of peer pressure according to Melania.

Yes and Julia Ioffe really deserved to be doxxed and get rape threats, death threats and genocide threats from Trump-loving nazis because she was SOOOO UNFAIR to Melania in her semi-puff piece for GQ in which she said a mean thing that Melania’s caviar formula body cream FAILED. Melania MADE MONEY from the caviar formula bodycream, just the INVESTORS who gave money to the caviar formula body cream company LOST THEIR MONEY.

Is it normal for all these people to crawl to meet Trump is his castle? Does this bother anyone else but me?

Facebook in three acts (British edition):

ACT 1: Drunk woman is denied access to club; goes home and writes obnoxious, racist, xenophobic rant on club’s facebook page.

ACT 2: Club posts thoughtful response, including things like: “We have a society of acceptance and tolerance within the U.K., yet there are people who still exist with such outdated and outrageous beliefs of racial hatred.”

ACT 3: Club’s post is removed for not complying with Facebook community guidelines. The bar shared the note from Facebook on its page with the caption, “Apparently racial hatred is permitted, speaking out against such is not. Such a strange world.”

2 Questions:
How fucking stupid is Donald Trump?
How fucking stupid does he think we are?

I think his winning the election is proof that we (collective America) are pretty stupid.

He is a clever con artist that somehow won the presidential election even with all the information about his bad business practices, funky treatment of women and racist thinking.

Stupid or cunningly dumb? Time to face the reality and figure out how to deal with it and get his orange ass away from the government as soon as possible.

China can do far more damage economically than with a thermonuclear weapon. They own too many assets here.

Yeah…get ready for The Bank of China. Locations near you!

It’s probably amazing the number of people who think hacking is like something from the old video game “Uplink”.

The thing with con artists is not that they are smart. They only have to be smarter than their marks, and they target the stupids as their ideal marks.

Teen Vogue is doing the work that traditional media is terribly reluctant to do. That blows my mind.

I went to Teen Vogue yesterday for the politics and stayed for the beauty info. I learned, for example, that face sheets made in Korea were being hand-folded and packaged in people’s homes. Sanitary issues galore, obvs!

I feel confident that Trump thinks this is one of the biggest perks of being elected.

Of course it make total sense that a guy that is famous for using slinky sexy women models to sell big fat greasy hamburgers loaded with cheese, mayo, bacon and probably 1500 calories or more would be against abortion.

Yeah…makes all the sense in the world. As much sense as anything else going on currently regarding Trump and this election.

I’ll have to read it. I went to a lecture a couple years ago (can’t remember the guy’s name) wherein he argued that slaveowners were growing slaves as a product once they could no longer be imported (thus rape) and had to have new territories open to slavery in order to move product.
