Some Thoughts on Twitter, Censorship, Free Speech and Social Responsibility

And the white supremacists who destroy
Opinion • Views: 40,880

This was originally posted to Twitter as a “tweetstorm,” but I thought I should also make it an article at LGF so the whole thing is easily accessible in one spot.

First, let’s get something clear: the First Amendment of the US Constitution has absolutely nothing to do with Twitter.

The 1st Amendment says the government cannot restrict free expression, and Twitter is not the government. Twitter has an absolute right to suspend anyone’s account for any reason, and when you register an account with them you explicitly agree to grant them this right.

Second, the word “censorship” does not apply to Twitter. Censorship means taking away someone’s ability to speak or express themselves, and if Twitter suspends an account that person is still absolutely free to go to Facebook or Gab or start a blog or write a letter to a newspaper, and express themselves that way.

It’s simply not possible for Twitter to “censor” you, because they cannot stop you from expressing yourself elsewhere.

This brings us to the issue of whether Twitter should try to shut down the use of their service by white supremacists and neo-Nazis. I believe they have not only a right, but a social responsibility to not give these dangerous views a gigantic megaphone.

The idea that letting white supremacists have free rein of Twitter will result in getting them shut down by force of social pressure is refuted by the empirical fact that it simply has not worked. Neo-Nazis and white supremacists are now dismayingly numerous on Twitter, and this was reportedly one of the factors that led companies like Disney to back out of a potential deal to buy Twitter.

When Twitter takes no action to stop them, it’s not only harming its own reputation and brand, it’s handing the worst people on the Internet enormous power, and allowing them to spread and convert others — and they are taking full advantage of it. “Debating” the views of neo-Nazis does no good, because they have no interest in honest debate; all you achieve by arguing with them is to make it seem as if there’s something to argue about, and they’ll just laugh at you for being so easily manipulated.

Doing nothing to stop racists and neo-Nazis has another, even more insidious effect: it drives away decent people, either because they’re harassed and tormented by these cavemen, or because they simply choose not to take part in a social network that allows this kind of abuse.

But in the real world, we have a terrible example of what can happen when websites and networks like Twitter abandon the concept of social responsibility.

We know from his trial that Dylann Roof was inspired to commit mass murder by his exposure to the views of white supremacists on the Internet. It’s horribly dangerous to pretend this virulent ideology of hatred is just another viewpoint, as valid as any other.

On that related note (and I meat note LITERALLY here):

Instagram

The hatred by some against people of color is one of the reasons we are where we’re at in the world today, and they wonder why we feel the way we do and take the stances that we take. I received this letter at work.

Second racial incident against an NFL player this week alone.

You’d figure they would learn from allowing extremists a platform to propagate their views after Da’esh took full advantage of it in 2014.

Because they know that Twitter either doesn’t give a fuck to ban the shittiest, vilest Tweeters permanently, because drama, controversy, and strife brings eyeballs and advertisers and VC folks haven’t completely bailed on the company yet.

Maybe those advertisers and VC folks should bail.

Hatchling’s first page, never commented?

I am attempting to assume good faith, since the overall tone didn’t seem to be approving, but.

Great editorial.

Just a random thought: is it possible that Jack Dorsey, et. al., are just giving up; or worse, actually leaning towards catering to these monsters? Could they possibly be thinking “Fuck it, let’s try to make money off of these guys”?

I keep going to Les Moonves’ comments about how Trump was bad for the US but good for CBS. I always read that as Moonves straight up saying, “So what if Trump kills us all, at least I’ll be rich.”

We basically yare becoming a banana republic with the largest nuclear arsenal in the world.

And so did a lot of other people who aren’t Nazis. Look, I get it - American white supremacism seems to be a growing power. I’m viewing it more as a vocal minority. Like the Luap Nor of old, they only seem to be making a splash because they’re delivering their message with an impact out of proportion to their actual numbers.

I’m of two minds on this.

On the one hand, you’re right; maybe it was someone thinking they’re helping out, and getting carpet bombed out of the gate isn’t the greatest welcome wagon.

On the other? I’ve noticed most hatchlings tend to introduce themselves in the comments first, then make pages. Not always, of course. But given this person’s lack of posting and the never-ending wall of Gab screenshots? I’m highly skeptical.

I know. I just keep going back to things like Obama offering his hand to the GOP in 2009 and coming back with a bloody stump. Or all of my acquaintances pissing and moaning how about everything is so politically correct, and then proceeding to drop every racist slur in the book.

It’s getting harder and harder to give people a pass. It’s like all this bullshit about how you’re not supposed to be too critical of Trump supporters who weren’t obvious racists. You hear they were frustrated and frightened and just wanted change. But don’t come down on them too hard for electing one of the most unqualified candidates in American history to run the country.

That’s what I don’t get, though. They’re unable to sell because the site is by and large a cesspool, but they keep appeasing the people who are making it so.

You’d think they’d want to clean it up so someone would want to by it. Unless they’re just trying to bank as much dough as they can on the way out.

When you try and sell a house you at least clean it up a bit?

Unless most of the traffic is done by those goons?

I’m agnostic about her, TBH. Her lawsuits stand an equal chance of being instituted at the behest of her ogre old man (or maybe even by him).

I just notice that she usually looks pretty miserable. And if she’s putting up with being perpetually miserable for the money, then that’s on her.

Okay, what exactly is there to be sympathetic to Melania about? She looks miserable? Who the fuck cares if she’s miserable? She aided and abetted the election of DJT. She came out and made shitty speeches for him (and lied), she did shitty interviews for him (and lied), and she only started looking sad when people pointed out how dishonest and awful she was. She only got pulled back because she was too easy a chink in Donald’s armor. She aided and abetted whatever is happening now, and whatever the long term consequences for this.

JFC slut-shaming? She’s an awful person who is as dishonest as the rest of them, and will be responsible for the pain and suffering of actual innocent people all over the GLOBE, and we can’t point out she was a nude model to the family values crowd? Try this. Write down a weight value that you know you were close to for some long while. I’ll assume you now weigh less (or more). Divide (or multiply) that previous stable historical weight by 1.08, once —or two or three times. I’ll bet that your current weight, that you are “stuck at”, will be very close to one of those calculated values.

I dunno, I guess I’m in the camp of “there’s enough stupid-ass shit Donald’s done that why the fuck do we need to talk about his wife?”

Add onto that the whole list of shit we mocked the RWNJs for, up to and including their horrific abuse of Michelle Obama over things like her appearance and what she chose to focus on as First Lady.

And I will express that, because for fuck’s sake, we just proved there’s a shit ton of misogyny out there still and do we really need to perpetuate it? But then I’m going to leave it alone and keep moving forward because the only person whose behavior I have any shot of controlling is my own and so I’ll see how my principles apply and move on from there. I say something in general only when I think other people might also want to consider the topic.

Maybe it’s not possible to fight evil and hold onto my principles at the same time, but I haven’t seen proof yet that it’s necessary to become what I dislike.

I’ve been within spitting distance for close to three weeks now and I just can’t lose those last two.

I think we’re still dealing with the fact that Trump won. Similar to dealing with any aggressor, it takes a bit for our side to get organized. We don’t have to give up our principles. What we will have to do is (re)learn how to defend them. We have done it a little bit, but it’s going to take more from us.

Slut-shaming implies that we are pointing out that Melania is promiscuous or ‘sex-positive’ as the youngsters say and assigning a negative value to that. What is actually going on is saying ‘hey family value crowd, let me rub your nose into your hypocrisy’.

And teleskiguy, that video was a bad SNL skit. I literally can see it being done better in my head with Kate McKinnon and Cecily Strong. They would do it with a crappy accent, and they would absolutely include a fart joke.

Matter of fact

Also, klys, I *do* agree that there is more stuff to worry about with the Trump administration, and the treatment of Michelle Obama made me livid. But calling Michelle Obama a monkey is nowhere near the same as calling Melania Trump a nude model . I am 100% on board with eliminating misogyny. But seriously. Party of Family Values? If we don’t do anything else in the next four years we should tear that label away from them and burn it. *They called pornography a public health crisis in 2016 and then elected a man on the cover a Playboy who was married to a nude model*.

You’re assuming they care about hypocrisy.

We have plenty of evidence to support that they don’t give a shit as long as they have the power to impose their views on others. Party first. If it lets the party win, it’s acceptable. We saw that attitude on the small scale here and on a national scale with this election.

So in the meantime, I’m going to go after Donald for his stupid shit and stick to my normal policy (pre-Obamas, because Michelle Obama was in a class of her own) of ignoring the First Lady.

Heh. Last night in one of the SNL Weekend Update sketches they used “When they go low we get high”

As far as Melania…small ‘taters right now. Right now I don’t think she even realizes what she is in for. She is going to get enough crap as is.

re: #141 klys (maker of Silmarils)

I should add the caveat that of course if it is a conversation where I feel like pointing out the hypocrisy is fertile ground, I’m going to do so, but it’s a delicate process. Deprogramming isn’t easy and if you step on the wrong trigger you undo everything.

In the meantime, keeping in mind how the general discourse strips nuance and turns it into soundbites and slogans and 140 character bits, I am loathe to bring it up in public because it is so easy for it to become “well it’s just a shameful thing that she took nude photos and is now FLOTUS” and then the RWNJs turn it around to be the hypocrisy of the supposedly sex-positive left (which we’re making progress but I don’t believe for a minute that it’s anywhere close to a solid thing) and that just reinforces the mindset that we’re trying to break people out of.

AND that’s without even going into the background noise in our culture about how women are supposed to be sexy and thin and beautiful but they shouldn’t take nude photos of themselves unless they want them splattered around everywhere and good girls don’t do that and I really wish Americans had a less fucked-up attitude towards body image and sex and all this bullshit.

Anyway this is a deep topic and I’ve said a lot more than I intended to but hopefully maybe at least something makes sense to someone. I get that this is a distraction topic and not really relevant and the focus should be on the idiot people actually voted for (even if a minority of the voters). Sigh.

Brother, the question is stupid, and ignores everything I’m saying.

Klys, you right. That is something I think a good thing for Democrats in the long run if we take advantage of it. Weiner got taken down for sending photos to willing recipients who were of legal age. The kernel of John Edwards’s downfall was an extramarital affair. The only reason that happens is because Dems are busy fighting the social war, trying to prove an antiquated moral purity to people who use it as both cudgel and shield. If nothing else, going forward, we should not allow that line of attack to propagate in the future, and we should absolutely point the finger at the Trumps every single time. Oh also at the Palins. Yes, point out the moral fluidity of the Trumps and the Palins (just the ones of legal age) all the time, and just *maybe*, we’ll stop being on the defensive for being people?

I think the ultimate thing to know is that there is no Democrat pure enough for the GOP and to instead use our own standards to decide when to stand by a politician or not. I don’t want to see us becoming “party first” - not that I think we’re currently in danger of that, but it does bear saying.

I observe, I note, and when the seed can be planted, I do my best. And otherwise I try not to add to the noise.

Sigh.

I don’t give a rat’s ass about her modeling career. It’s when she does interviews and says things like Billy Bush egged Trump on to say dirty and bad stuff; and describe Trump as a “teenage boy” who was nothing but a victim of peer pressure and the “left-wing media” that she opens herself up for criticism.

In the big scheme of things, Melania is totally unimportant, but all this sympathy for how sad she looks and of her being a poor bird in a gilded cage—uh uh. Not buying it.

Just a reminder that I haven’t actually expressed anywhere sympathy for how she looks or being in a gilded cage. Or even said that she’s exempt from criticism for things that she has said.

My contributions have been solely on the topic of slut-shaming. I absolutely believe that it is appropriate for her to face the consequences of shit she has said and done that is within the political sphere; all I want is to see the response appropriate to the topic at hand, instead of venturing off into unrelated things like her career.

Fair enough. I think the discussion hit a few nerves with a bunch of people, me included.

I think people are going to ultimately fall on different sides of the line and that’s going to happen sometimes. That it was a discussion today is something that I actually see as progress, because I think even 15 years ago it would have been acceptable without batting an eye.

Sorry I brought it up.

Don’t be sorry. It is a legitimate stance.

The only problem I see is that there is no appreciation for it from the wingnut conservative hater-type side. They are unable to control their own hate and they would never understand why someone would even want to.

And that does fit into a common problem with liberal/progressive types. They remain nice and lose to those that hate freely. Those haters go so far as to call liberal/progressive types soft and worse.

Yeah, I figured you would be. I’m just peachy myself with you equating that video with abuse. I didn’t say dox her or throw paint on her furs. I didn’t say call her a monkey, or post pictures of her supposed penis, or claim her children came from another man, or start a vast conspiracy for 20 years accusing her of murder or a pedophilia ring.

I said point out that her life, past and present, runs counter to a large portion of the Republican plank. I said pointing out her actual actions doesn’t equal slut shaming. That’s not nuanced enough for you?

This is a website meant to defend Ukraine from Russian propaganda, but it seems to have broadened its scope (and I’m sure it’s been posted before). I’m sorry if I’m wrong and it’s shit, but it seems legit. Some of the opinion pieces have posited the same as Eric Garland, but earlier: there are generational differences in propagandists—those who were young in the 1990s and felt the bitter sting of Western triumph in the Yeltsin years to those who languish now. There is not the sharp ideological imperative of Lenin-Stalinist Marxism; it’s a combination of Stalin authoritarian fetishism and conservative imperialist Russian pride.

Seems to be yet another (though more inspiring and eloquent) variation on the “we’ve been through crap before and we’ll get through this” theme. There are three reasons why I don’t, at this moment, share the optimism:

1) The globalized (therefore precarious and vulnerable) economy - imagine an exponentially worse version of the 2008 financial crisis - none but the most isolated and self-sufficient communities would be immune
2) A nuclear arsenal large enough to, with one wrong/stupid move, extinguish all life on this planet
3) The ever-increasing possibly of the “point of no return” re catastrophic climate change

In other words, we’re rapidly approaching “sorry, no do-overs” territory.

Trump says CIA report that Russia helped his electoral win is “ridiculous”
4 senators: Post’s reporting regarding foreign meddling “should alarm every American.”

Cyrus Farivar - Dec 11, 2016

President-elect Donald Trump has continued to flaunt reported assessments by the CIA that the Russian government specifically helped his campaign win the presidential election, calling them “ridiculous.” One of Trump’s top advisors, Kellyanne Conway, also dubbed them “laughable and ridiculous” on CBS’s “Face the Nation” on Sunday.
[snip]
During the same interview, Trump also reportedly said that as president he would not receive the top-secret President’s Daily Briefing. Currently, the president-elect is reportedly only receiving it once a week.

Trump continued in his interview with Fox News Sunday that Vice President-elect Mike Pence, would receive the PDB in his place, largely because Trump finds it too repetitive.

You know, I’m, like, a smart person,” he said. “I don’t have to be told the same thing in the same words every single day for the next eight years.”

The PDB, President’s Daily Briefing — “Trump finds it too repetitive”. Sheesh.

Blind Frog Belly White  Dec 11, 2016 • 6:36:53pm

My take on Melania is that she’s the least of our problems.

For that reason, the only potential use of her is when wingnuts post their “Aren’t you glad we’re getting rid of the Queen N*gg*r someone with class in our White House?” posts on FB. At that point, the not only classless, but really cheesy pics are perfectly appropriate, because they give the lie to the ‘classy’ nonsense. Though usually I just say, “Why don’t just you say ‘White’. It’s what you mean.”

Apart from that, there’s nothing to be gained antagonizing her.

Ivanka, OTOH, and Trump’s creepy sexualization of her, as well as her hypocrisy in having her clothes made overseas - and moving production to Ethiopia, where it will presumably be cheaper, as well as sitting in on a meeting with the Japanese PM while her business is negotiating with a a Japanese company owned by the government? Oh, yeah. She’s ABSOLUTELY fair game.

What kind of incurious twit/boob (twoob?) are you when you’re not interested in the most coveted and important super-sekrit intelligence briefing in the world?

Think of all the things the FREAKING PRESIDENT needs to know. Secret stuff. AWESOME stuff. All things mind-blowing and mundane that a globe-spanning, trillion-dollar intelligence apparatus decides you need to know to run the most powerful ship of state in human history.

And your reaction to that is “Boring! I’m too smart for that!” Really? Good fucking grief!! He isn’t even curious??!

This is proof he sees this all as a business. He is now CEO…overseer. He doesn’t need to do anything, all he needs to do is use all those smarts he thinks he has and order others to carry it out.

Yeah, it’s that easy.

And with that thinking he is going to fuck up and blame it on others and then his whole administration will see they are in a mess because he doesn’t have their backs, they are all on the firing line…just like some stupid TV show…I think it was called The Apprentice or something.

How many times has a candidate’s supporters made the excuse that “He isn’t privy to all the intel”? Or the detractors sneered that when a candidate finally started getting briefings, he’d change his tune because the “truth” was so much worse than what he was presenting on the campaign trail? We put a great deal of importance on these briefings because only the president is believed to be aware of all the goings-on on a daily basis that would turn out hair white if we knew it. All the threats to this nation that are stopped before they become public, the threats (foreign and domestic) that we never hear about, the big events that go on in the shadows so that we can sleep at night.

I never thought I’d miss the days of C+ Augustus and the Avignon Presidency.

The interesting (read: mindboggling) thing about this to me is that intel briefings are driven by what the person who is being given the briefing wants to know. Intel officers don’t grab a random collection of facts/notes and regurgitate them. The PDB is based right now on the strategic priorities President Obama has set. If Trump isn’t going to take the briefings, is he going to set the priorities? How has it not been explained to him that HE determines what goes into that briefing? I swear to all the deities that are listening, if Putin won’t even teach him how to be a good patsy I’m gonna take my ball and go home.

Got me thinking of one of my friends who currently works in the Department of National Intelligence. Let me quote you a section from an email he sent to me right before Thanksgiving:

“My boss, DNI Clapper always says, ‘I am struck by how simple things are on the campaign trail, and how those very same issues seem very hard in the confines of the White House Situation Room. There are far more complexities, policy implications and legal implications to things than would appear on the campaign trail.”

Also, pragmatic reminder that most people need some form of hope or optimism, however unlikely, to fuel the courage and will to fight on.

Just read this Barbara Kingsolver view on optimism, pessimism and hope last night. I think it’s appropriate to the conversation.

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the difference between being optimistic and being hopeful. I would say that I’m a hopeful person, although not necessarily optimistic. Here’s how I would describe it. The pessimist would say, “It’s going to be a terrible winter; we’re all going to die.” The optimist would say, “Oh, it’ll be all right; I don’t think it’ll be that bad.” The hopeful person would say, “Maybe someone will still be alive in February, so I’m going to put some potatoes in the root cellar just in case.”

Oh, great.

China flies nuclear bomber over South China Sea to ‘send a message’ to Donald Trump

China has flown a nuclear-capable bomber outside its borders in a show of force for the first time since US President-elect Donald Trump’s phone call with the president of Taiwan.

The 10-minute telephone call with President Tsai Ing-wen was the first by a US president-elect or president since President Jimmy Carter switched diplomatic recognition from Taiwan to China in 1979, acknowledging Taiwan as part of ‘One China’. It led to protests from Beijing.

The Xian H-6 bomber flew along the disputed ‘nine-dash line’ around the South China Sea on Thursday, US officials told Fox News, passing over a number of disputed islands. The officials said it was designed to send a message to the incoming administration.

See, that’s not how you get Trump’s attention. Now if you raided the factory where his clothes are made and shut it down, THAT would get his attention.

He (like Jon Huntsman circa 2008-2012) accepts the science of AGW, which automatically makes him preferable to 99.9% of other GOPers.

re: #274 Belafon

Someone may have posted this as well, and I am not sure how to feel about liking a tweet from Graham, but I had to like this:

[Embedded content]

I have seen Graham’s history over the past few years, so I know who he is, but any Russian influence in the Executive is too much.

I’m still trying to come up with an appropriate “America Yes, Russia No” statement that would fit on a bumper sticker.

To expand on the optimistic vs. pessimistic vs. hopeful examples I posted above.

I would have to say I’m not optimistic about Graham, but perhaps hopeful—he has, in the past seemed to start down a righteous path, only to turn off on a detour—i.e. back when Kagan was up for SC, he said:

President Obama won, and I’ve got a lot of opportunity to disagree with him. But the Constitution in my view puts a requirement on me as a senator to not replace my judgment for his, not to think of the 100 reasons I would pick somebody differently or pick a fight with Ms. Kagan…I thought she did a very good job and she will serve this nation honorably. It would not have been someone I would have chosen, but the person who did choose, President Obama, I think chose wisely.

Yay—go Lindsey.

Flash forward to 2016 and the Garland issue:

Lindsey Graham (S.C.), admitted Thursday a stark fact that the rest of his colleagues have tried their best to avoid: that their blockade of any Supreme Court nominee by President Barack Obama is unprecedented.

And he insisted that he was going to go along with it…(and now he wants Trump to pick Ted Cruz.)

But him going along with the bozos on not holding hearings for Garland went against everything he’d ever said about Supreme Court judges.
And he (Lindsey) wasn’t up for re-election this year, so he could have taken a stand.

Sad that he’s the better of my two senators by far—Tim Scott is worthless—no opinion on anything and, as I’ve mentioned, someone who totally gives me the creeps any time I’m ever in the same room with him.
