I have no problems with more F-18s, but there’s nothing comparable about the F-18 and F-35 if the F-35 could do everything that has been promised.

Popping in briefly to say that I hope all Lizards are happy and healthy and getting the chance to spend whatever holiday they celebrate at this time of year in the way of their choosing. We have one more night here at my in-laws before we move to my parents’ house. The Outer Banks were kind of cold. I got in my runs anyway. Today’s Christmas celebration was good.

And so far we have avoided all bad topics, which I am grateful for. Also the news, which I am also grateful for. Sometimes you just have to unplug.

Keeping you all in my thoughts this holiday season too!

That’s weapons grade dumbassery.

There’s no comparison between the F-18 and the F-35 (as troubled as the F-35 is).

F-35 is a 6G aircraft, with supercruise, enabling Mach 1+ without needing afterburners. It has stealth and host of other ECM abilities.

The F-18 super hornet is a fine aircraft, but it can’t do supercruise, lacks stealth, and the ECM.

Both are pretty aircraft, but the F-18 is akin to the 57 Mustang and the F-35 is a 2016 Ferrari. Sure, the Mustang is pretty to look at and fun to drive, but it’ll get the doors blown off it by the Ferrari.

Just a few questions should settle this.

1) When was the last time I ate turkey?

2) When was the last time I ate beef Wellington?

3) Can I make a really good turkey myself, or do I at least have a close friend who can?

4) Same as 3), but substitute “beef Wellington” for “turkey.”

Your course should become obvious.

Of course, beef Wellington isn’t all that hard to make. Like turkey, it isn’t always easy to make it in a small amount, and while you can eat leftovers of, or freeze almost anything, beef Wellington will never be the same again. Turkey thaws/reheats nicely.
Unless you are planning a dinner party with beef Wellington in the near future, I’d go with that.

The F35 also has the Distributed Aperture Array which provides 360 steradian situational awareness and targeting capability. The pilot can literally look over his shoulder behind him and launch a missile at an enemy that would’ve had an advantage in a traditional dogfight. Then there’s the AN/APG-81 AESA Radar that is a weapon it itself, theoretically able to hack and destroy any enemy system with an antenna. Also, in the near future the B version of the 35 will be able to house a solid state high energy laser by ditching the lift fan.

I’ve only made it once. Every time I asked my brother if he had any requests when I was having him and my sister-in-law over for dinner he’d say “beef Wellington.” Despite knowing it was a joke, I made it one year for Xmas dinner. I was actually surprised that it wasn’t hugely difficult. It was enjoyed by all.

re: #71 Backwoods_Sleuth

It’s two parallel ~3 mile long bridges, each of which will have 4 lanes in each direction, plus full width breakdown lanes and shoulder, which is something the existing bridge lacked so that any time there was an accident or breakdown, it led to significant delays. It’s also being built with pedestrian walkway and ability to be retrofitted to include heavy rail at some point in future.

The cost is $3.9 billion and Cuomo still hasn’t quite explained where the money is coming from - it’s just going to add to the Thruway Authority debt load especially since the Authority wont be able to raise tolls right away.

It’s good that the new bridge is getting done. It’s bad that it didn’t include mass transit right off the bat. That’s going to cost everyone far more in the future.
