Again: 4chan is not going to throw the guy under the bus they mostly supported, and 4chan really does not like drawing attention to itself.

If it was true (4chan did it) then right there the FBI has the authority to seize and shut down their Website. There may be a lot of puerile stuff on 4chan, but they aren’t stupid.

Why do people think these goals are different? How about “Russia’s goal was to eect Donald Trump, or if unable to do that, to weaken Hillary Clinton’s Presidency”.

One of the claims that the document compromising Mr. Trump is fake is that “Alpha Bank” (the Russian bank associated with him) is misspelt.

In Russian, it appears as Альфа-Банк

The Cyrillic letter ф can be translated either “f” or “ph.”

In phonetics, the letter A is written “alfa.”

The Greek letter is normally written “alpha.”

The spelling of Alfa Bank is mostly left up to who is writing it.

Uh, not really. Even in the very kinky novels I edit, this ain’t part of it. The niche market would be so small they would not sell.

Wingnuts are still all over Twitter trying to claim “fake news” and “4chan” but they are not gaining traction. 4chan people are trying to claim credit as “Trump fan fic” and trolling Rick Wilson and the CIA, but the news was first hinted at a whole month before 4chan’s fake meme showed up on Twitter tonight. (I would not be adverse to the FBI investigating 4chan.)

Meanwhile, people in the Eastern Hemisphere are waking up to this and are going just as wild about it as when it broke here.

#goldenshowers

That said, this isn’t about Mr. Trump’s consensual kinks. It’s about espionage. The report is quite clear on that.

Supreme Court halts North Carolina special election to cure racially-gerrymandered districts.
huffingtonpost.com

WASHINGTON ― The Supreme Court on Tuesday granted an emergency petition from Republican legislators in North Carolina, putting the brakes on a special election to cure districts that a federal court determined were racially gerrymandered.

The justices’ move came a day before the new legislature is set to begin its legislative work, and a little over a week after Gov. Roy Cooper (D) took office. Cooper’s team did not return a request for comment on the court’s order.

In November, a three-judge court directed the state’s GOP-controlled General Assembly to redraw 28 state Senate and House districts that it said were designed to dilute the voting power of minorities. But the court let the November election take place under the old maps — on the condition that once the newly elected representatives redrew the maps, a new election would be conducted.

Republican legislators who were elected on Nov. 8 told the Supreme Court that the ruling effectively means their seats would only be good for one year, not two, and that the redrawn maps run the risk of being irrelevant because the justices will soon rule in a pair of cases that should provide further guidelines on how to deal with the use of race in redistricting.

“When the newly elected General Assembly convenes on January 11, 2017,” the Republican legislators told the court, “it should be free to pursue the people’s business, not forced to divert the precious first weeks to drawing maps based on the district court’s idiosyncratic view of redistricting, especially when further guidance from this Court is forthcoming.”

The Supreme Court temporarily agreed on Tuesday to the lawmakers’ request to delay the federal court order to redraw the offending maps and conduct a special election.

Wyden is our guy here in Oregon and while I don’t always agree with him I do like the way he operates:

The fact that both Obama and Trump were briefed on the report in a meeting with the heads of the NSA, CIA, FBI and Office of the Director of National Intelligence suggests that US intelligence agencies at least consider its contents important, if not altogether true, says Susan Hennessey, a former NSA lawyer. Senator John McCain personally delivered a copy of the report to FBI Director James Comey in December, according to CNN. And in a Senate hearing today, Ron Wyden (D-OR) pressed Comey to reveal whether the FBI was investigating Donald Trump’s ties to Russia, a tactic Wyden has used in the past to call attention to the existence of classified information without revealing it.

That’s out of a new article at Wired.

I wanted to stay at Butterfly at Waterfront, where I had stayed last time. Instead, in a sleep-deprived fog I booked Butterfly on Hollywood, its sister hotel. Same price, different location and closer to Little Bao than the other one.

Matt Drudge in own goal at Drudge Report

With a link at the top of his Website, entitled “Spy Agencies Exposed,” Mr. Drudge links to the article that debunks the 4chan claim about hoaxing the spy agencies yesterday.

The sentiment expressed at DR is pretty much what we’ve come to expect from the Authoritarian Right: The intel agencies have been “exposed” because Russia “denies” the substance of the claims.

If anyone clicks on that link at the top of Drudge Report however, they go to the article which says the exact opposite of his headline.

I don’t know a whole lot about the people that stand by Mr. Drudge’s Website, whether they read the articles he links or only read the text of the link itself.

So 4chan wrote up this fake story, sent it to both the FBI and McCain months ago and months apart, managed to get multiple agencies to accept it without so much as calling up their British counterparts to inquire as to its veracity, and got them to put such trust in it that it was included in a presidential intel briefing.

Yup, and after Mother Jones and other outlets had already reported that the FSB had dirt on Mr. Trump.

Apparently 4chan denizens have a Tardis to go back in time, plus are so powerful they can influence Sen. John McCain, BuzzFeed, MI-5, the CIA, and the FBI.

Either that, or it was a four-hundred pound guy in a basement in New Jersey, take your pick. /s It couldn’t be because that’s how intelligence actually works.

I imagine that their wee little minds have decided that if they isolate the whole thing to Buzzfeed, claim they were the subject of an elaborate prank by 4chan, then it ends right then and there. Say what was published to the press was a fake, that the “real” memo doesn’t contain any of the truly embarrassing bits, and say that the intel community is in on the whole thing on Obama’s orders.

As I noted last night, Trump has nobody in his corner who can actually speak with any authority on this leak. The biggest driver of this story is the report that the intel community felt the memo of such authenticity that they included it in their briefing to him. And nobody in that same community is rushing to debunk the story. Republicans on Capital Hill saying its not true mean nothing because the damned document implicates them in the whole matter as well.

Another in the “you reap what you sow” story of the Republicans. They have passed unsubstantiated stories around for a while now just to make them become true by repetition. If what we’re seeing right now is the initial stages of that strategy, they are in deep trouble. Because perception is reality, and this ludicrously salacious story has already taken on a life of its own.

As an analogy, longtime lizards know about the floor-shitting story that has dogged Chuck C. Johnson since college, which Gawker covered, and CCJ filed a lawsuit — later dismissed — over. Like Trump, the more he wailed that the stories were untrue, the more they stuck to him. Now, the floor-shitting is part of Internet lore.

Compromised.

That’s the word of the day.

Compromised.

It describes exactly what Trump is right now. And has been for weeks and months.

He’s compromised.

The intel revelations about his sexual preferences and actions while in Russia are actually quite besides the point. It’s that the Russians were intent on exploiting Trump to their own benefit and would use these events to further their own interests at our expense.

Trump’s business dealings with Russia are shrouded in mystery, but we know he’s got significant business with Russians (courtesy of his own admission that they do).

Tillerson has significant Russian dealings, and has been trying to expand Exxon’s business in Russia so he thinks favorably of Putin.

Manafort is a Putin puppet.

On and on it goes - Trump surrounded himself with a bunch of people who were whispering pro-Russia/pro-Putin things in his ear. The GOP platform adopted a more pro-Russia position at Trump’s behest.

That’s why Trump’s compromised.

That it is true or not is already besides the point. Russia benefits from kneecapping Trump’s administration in the crib with these statements. Create chaos and uncertainty.

Meanwhile, the media’s handling of these revelations - included in the presidential briefings no less - compared to the Clinton email vaporware - is quite informative.

The media is responsible to a significant extent for what has happened with the election outcome. Pushing bogus stories as though they’re legitimate. Ignoring legitimate issues or otherwise burying the details on page A30 (as they’re again doing with Trump).

Funny how the people who once demanded to see every email and document from the Clinton Foundation now are upset that DT nominees are being asked to provide the most basic stuff. Of course these same people didn’t care about seeing DT’s tax returns either.

189
lawhawk  Jan 11, 2017 • 6:24:10am

The FBI and CIA sat on the intel in October, even though the intel was circulating in DC:

The FBI and CIA refused to address this substantively at the time. The CIA doesn’t need to show beyond a reasonable doubt that this is factual. That’s not the standards they use. This isn’t a prosecution.

That they found this information, and suggests that Russia was intending to compromise Trump should have been made public at the time. Had voters known at the time that they were voting for a guy who was being targeted and/or already compromised by Russia, they might have chosen differently.

Russia got exactly what they wanted out of all this - a dysfunctional transition, an incompetent and out of his league future president, all kinds of uncertainty and a refusal by a significant portion of the American public to believe anything the media says to the contrary (that Trump is compromised, a liar, moral/ethically challenged, bigot, racist, etc., anything that would be disqualifying). Russia will step into the vacuum and exploit the situation to their benefit, whether it’s more favorable deals, inserting itself into regional affairs outside its traditional sphere of influence - expanding it’s sphere of influence, or pushing for favorable outcomes that are detrimental to the US and our interests (think Middle East, South Asia, Central America, etc.).

Trump: Trust Russia when they say that they didn’t do what our intel agencies claim they did.

Trump: I have no relations with Russia.

Lies, more lies, and obfuscations.

So, yes, it’s true that Trump has failed to land a business venture inside Russia. But the real truth is that, as major banks in America stopped lending him money following his many bankruptcies, the Trump organization was forced to seek financing from non-traditional institutions. Several had direct ties to Russian financial interests in ways that have raised eyebrows. What’s more, several of Trump’s senior advisors have business ties to Russia or its satellite politicians.

“The Trump-Russia links beneath the surface are even more extensive,” Max Boot wrote in the Los Angeles Times. “Trump has sought and received funding from Russian investors for his business ventures, especially after most American banks stopped lending to him following his multiple bankruptcies.”

What’s more, three of Trump’s top advisors all have extensive financial and business ties to Russian financiers, wrote Boot, the former editor of the Op Ed page of the Wall Street Journal and now a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations.

Construction projects, beauty pageants, and ties to people close to Putin. Heck, his daughter Ivanka parties with Putin’s squeeze.

But sure, there’s no ties. No business. Nothing to see here.

Everywhere you turn, Trump lies about his businesses and what they’re up to. The moment you hold any of it up to scrutiny, it falls apart as smoke and mirrors. Trump’s so far over his head that it’s dangerous.

Thanks. Yeah, this one is a particularly nasty one this season. About half of my students have already had it and it lives up to their horrific descriptions.

Maybe this epidemic will finally be what it takes to convince Czechs to get vaccines for the flu. Less than 5% of Czechs get a vaccine, despite the fact that they’re free and easily available at any local poliklinika. What do Czechs rely on, you may ask?

Homeopathy. Yep, that’s right…..woowoo.

I read, perhaps in Slate, a speculative article about Hitler’s first girlfriend, before Eva Braun. The article mentioned that Hitler was said to have a kink called Undinism, named after Undine (of the sea).

The common definition of Undinism is exactly what Twitter is on fire about!

I’m not interested in Hitler’s preferences, but I love the term “Undinism”. It makes this common kink seem to be ominous and scary, just as when I was in middle school, when I could say “Sexual DEV-iant” in just the right tone of voice to get everyone around me to show me on the doll where my bully touched me.

As Olbermann (above and previously) and just about everyone with a functioning brain have noted, the man can’t just respond and drop it. This is a dangerous trait for a person in the position he will soon be occupying. It’s a massive security hole for him to be able to twit a will about anything that riles him up.

Lashing out a private citizen is one thing. Doing it as the chief executive of the US is another. Then, add on the inability to let things go and move on to the next issue spells massive trouble. And, other leaders are going to take advantage of it. They know how to play the international give-and-take game, tRump does not. Adittionally, we won’t have any high level diplomats in other countries to help, anymore.

Early monitoring of vaccine effectiveness in Finland and Sweden suggests suboptimal performance of the current vaccine against the circulating A(H3N2) strains, with a 30% vaccine effectiveness in persons of 65 years and older for laboratory-confirmed influenza A. Given the partial effectiveness of influenza vaccines, rapid use of neuraminidase inhibitors for laboratory-confirmed or probable cases of influenza should be considered for vaccinated and non-vaccinated at-risk patients.
