Good tunes Charles. I can see myself in a bar listening to this while sipping on a cold beer and eating good food. I really need to improve my Spanish. I’d love to know what he’s singing. Austin has a great music scene I’m told.

Reads like self-fulfilling prophecy. If there’s violence tomorrow, the Trumpers will insist that its yet further “proof” that all anti-Trump folks are violent anarchists, while protestors will insist that it was instigated by paid agitators at Trump’s orders.

The possibility that there are simply random violent assholes who will use the protests as an excuse to start hitting people and breaking shit never occurs to either group.

There’s will likely be ratfuckers there so they need to be completely non-violent, keep cell phones out and on and immediately eject any people who incite.

Jesus, if I were Tillerson, I’d be pissed. The President’s Son-in-law shouldn’t be making these decisions. I mean Tillerson and Trump want to reverse our committment to the two state solution, that’s one goddamn thing and foolish but letting Jared decide is awful.

So the White House has not only decided it has no need to answer to Congress or the courts, it now feels it can take action even without the advice or support of its own agencies.

Trump is everything the Founders feared: A tyrant who feels his is not simply above the law, he feels that the law simply doesn’t apply to him.

It’s funny, but I’m pretty sure I remember the White House emphasizing when Jared was given his post that he had no real power or authority, hence why his being on the White House staff was not a violation of the nepotism laws. That he was being appointed to advise Der Trumpenfuhrer, nothing more.

Austin is not you think Texas looks like. It’s a heavily forested, walkable City. Put please come here in July and August when it’s 105 outside. We don’t want anyone else moving here. My $10,000/year property tax is just killing me.

Edited to add: Tillerson does have a second job. Apparently he is supposed to fire all the senior diplomats in the State Department because it will piss off the liberals.

I was in Georgestown last week for a show. I actually listened to Neil Young’s Live at the Cellar Door on the way down. That’s a show my Dad told me always regretted not going to. And then funnily enough as I was sitting in my bar stool, I saw a poster for that very concert. That was actually only my second or third time in Georgestown since I turned 21. Really don’t go down there too often but that may change since I found a great Belgian beer bar. I avoid GT since the crowd isn’t really my type of people and it’s a pita to get to but.

Sadly, Club Foot went the way of the Armadillo and all flesh in the late 80’s after the SNL collapse crashed the real estate market and sucked money out of people’s pockets like a V-8 Hemi-powered ShopVac.

What will need to happen is for protesters to be peaceful and to be vigilant of those around them. If someone starts to act up, others should stop them, isolate them, and notify the appropriate people so they can be removed.

MrBWS and I just had a discussion about craptastic things happening these days, and this actually became part of it:

Dishonour not your mothers; now attest
That those whom you call’d fathers did beget you.
Be copy now to men of grosser blood,
And teach them how to war. And you, good yeoman,
Whose limbs were made in England, show us here
The mettle of your pasture; let us swear
That you are worth your breeding; which I doubt not;
For there is none of you so mean and base,
That hath not noble lustre in your eyes.
I see you stand like greyhounds in the slips,
Straining upon the start. The game’s afoot:
Follow your spirit…

Alternatively, the best way to “reverse cowgirl” the rodent copulating is to show up for a protest.

Millions of women (and men) across the nation showed up for a protest that was entirely peaceful.

Even with people bent on causing trouble, a peaceful protest can be done: Make sure the protesters are familiar with the local police, and that instigators are promptly identified and handed over.

Reason #673,849 on why using Facebook is a bad idea…..
Star Tribune: Professor’s Facebook ‘rant’ sets off a backlash
Philosophy professor at U’s Morris campus triggers a strong response with comments degrading to immigrants.

Prof. Daniel Demetriou readily admits that his Facebook comments on immigrants were a bit of a rant.

But he never expected them to spread around campus, much less set off a public outcry.

Now, Demetriou, who teaches ethics and philosophy at the University of Minnesota Morris, is facing a backlash over a Facebook post in which he asserted that illegal immigrants “on average have IQs lower than natives” and that many refugees come from a “cult with repulsive values at war with the west.”

The post, which was circulated around campus without his knowledge, prompted some of his fellow faculty members to call for a “teach-in” to support immigrants and refugees on Monday. “Hopefully we can pull together as a community and refute these outright lies,” Heather Peters, an associate professor of psychology who helped organize the teach-in, told City Pages.

Demetriou, who is on sabbatical in Sweden, said he was caught off guard by the uproar over his posts, which he said were intended only for his Facebook friends.

At the same time, he defended his remarks, saying they had “been seized upon in order to further a political agenda and punish a dissenting voice.”

“I am ideologically right in a very ideologically left world,” he wrote in a statement to news organizations. “Although I am outspoken in private discussion, I am not involved in any political groups on campus, and I have never rallied for a cause. … But I am persuaded that the leftist immigration and refugee policy agenda, especially given the influence of divisive social justice theory and looming automation, is an existential threat to the US and other advanced western nations.”

Demetriou, a tenured associate professor who has taught at Morris since 2009, wrote in his Facebook post that “100% of illegal immigrants lower confidence in the rule of law and add people and workers and students we don’t need.”

TBH I didn’t realize how much would change so quickly. I mean you know it would be bad but your inner optimist hoped that maybe it wouldn’t be the total clusterfuck it’s been. The one saving grace is that they’re incompetent in many a way but that’s double edged.

Authoritarian regimes have to move quickly to consolidate power before significant opposition develops.

The nationwide protests (the Women’s march, descent on airports to protest the Muslim ban, &c) have all been peaceful and large. They are getting larger.

Every time GOP reps run from town halls it becomes news (doesn’t make them look very good).

I hope it’s not hot. I’m with a convention staying at the downtown Hyatt. The schedule looks full, but I’m sure there will be free time.

Was going to get Bob Schneider tix for

MAR 7 TUE
John Aielli 50th Anniversary Concert

But I’m just not sure about my availability so I didn’t. SAD

More likely to be chilly than hot this time of year, but you never know. Last week we touched 90, but I’ve also seen an ice storm on the last day of February, so, meh. Texas weather is like a box of chocolates.

You can still see Schneider. He’s with his band Lonelyland on Monday 3/6 at the Saxon Pub

thesaxonpub.com

as he is pretty damn every Monday. It’s a seven/eight minute cab (about three miles from the Hyatt. Nice venue. Get the cheap tickets. It’s a small space. If you have time, get to Uchi before 5:00 and try their Social Menu of tasting specials. Best sushi joint between LA and NY. No, really. That restaurant has produced two James Beard winners in Tyson Cole and Paul Qi.

Also Toni Price is going to be at The Continental Club on Tuesday, 3/7 at 7:00 ($10.00):

continentalclub.com

It’s a five minute ride from the Hilton on South Congress Avenue. The food down on the Avenue is tremendous.

So far we’ve had just a third of an inch of rain. Being this far south I knew we wouldn’t get as much rain as the folk up in LA.

Did check out a couple of loquat trees today… the recent rains have had them growing new leaves, finally. Fruit production is going to be way down, though. Early blooming last fall means some fruit is already turning, here in Feb, several weeks early, and the fruit is small because of the drought.

My flash drive is big enough that I can play music from my house to the Canadian border and repeat nothing.

One of the many things I don’t understand about iTunes: why does the mini-player start to change color once in awhile? Most of the time it is that light gray color, but I’ve seen it turn dark gray, or pink-gray, or even blue. I have no idea why, and the “help” facility is certainly not.

Back in the early days of microprocessors, when the trend was to slap the words “User-friendly” on the boxes of software, we’d call those pieces of code that had horrid interfaces User Hostile.

Another favorite of mine is when a Field Engineer comes in to do some Preventative Maintenance and it causes a catastrophy of one form or another-I call that “Provocative Maintenance”.

Really, the last thing we wanted was Milo to come off as a victim and that’s what he’s probably doing now as we speak on Maher. Milo deserves mockery. That’s how we’re going to beat people like that. Show people that Milo isn’t some champion of free speech, he’s a right wing hack with no actual principles except stirring shit up since he’s a self hating freak.

re: #137 Stanley Sea

I had a twitter conver with one of the resistance. My basic premise was, if I see a dude with a bandana over his face, I’m avoiding. The resisitance person said to point them out to the police, letting the police know you are peaceful & have no part of that shit.

I swear, the bandana is the key to friend or foe.

A peaceful protester should have no reason to hide his or her face.

Here’s a list of them (and if you get them through Mr. Johnson’s link he gets a small kickback):
amazon.com

They are around twenty dollars.

My cat came begging for his insulin: It’s still too early for that. I swear he’s a masochist.

Nice. Thanks added to my wishlist. Need to find some way to convert Dad’s old home moveis to digital format too. We tried that once this winter and we ended up getting someone else’s home movies by mistake. I felt like a voyeur watching that heh.

There were a number of AmeriCorps workers where we lived in Oklahoma. They assisted government in such things as reading and mentor programmes for Native Americans.

Yeah my high school buddy helped out I want to say in Louisiana a year or so after Katrina. They just help a lot of people. It’s also great experience for young people who want to serve their country but don’t want to in my case would be unable to join the military due to a medical condition.

These programs are such a small part of the budget too but they’er popular programs with liberals so spiteful Republican assholes are okay with gutting them.

goddamnedfrank  Feb 17, 2017 • 7:40:31pm

FYI

Based on trials by many street medics, this is one recommendation for exposure to pepper spray, especially for the mucous membranes (eyes, nose, mouth, genitalia)

L.A.W. is a solution of half liquid antacid and half water. This only applies to aluminum hydroxide or magnesium hydroxide based antacids such as Maalox (plain or mint). Please note that simethicone based antacids have NOT used in trials so far, and therefore are not recommended (however, simethicone as a secondary ingredient in Maalox has not been shown to cause harm.) Products like milk of magnesia and pepto bismol are NOT recommended.

Whenever possible it’s a good idea to have one person in your group be the designated medic. A simple tear gas / pepper spray remedy like the one above is the probably simplest thing you can prepare to turn a truly shit day into an interesting anecdote.

Republicans are the people who tell you that you have a spending program and then tell you that you need to stop going to that Tapas restaurant that you go to once a year for your birthday but not to stop spending money on the cigarettes you buy every other day at the grocery store.

The NCCC, successor to the Civilian Conservation Corps, is tucked into Americorps. They rotated teams of kids through our Habitat affiliate for a couple years. It is/was a great program for kids looking for education money and a break in the grind.

I’ve never seen The Incipient Cranial Circulatory Event there. Lance, yeah, but not Mr. Stroke On Deck.

One odd (and very nice, IMO) thing about Austin is the City’s attitude about celebrity. Twenty years ago, after Tarantino won his li’l Gold Buddy for pulp Fiction and Mira Sorvino won hers for Mighty Aphrodite, they dated for a while. She Who Must Be Obeyed’s parents were in town and we took them for Sunday lunch at Threadgill’s (nice little diner).

We walk in, sit down, look over, and two tables away it’s Mira and the Q.

No one got up asked for an autograph. No one bugged them at all. They were left completely alone. Which is as it should be.

So much truth. I abandoned a huge library for years because the shit just WOULD NOT WORK.

Finally accessed it after 5 years or so when I got my iPad.

Though it works far better on Apple products, it’s still a gigantic piece of shit.

re: #106 goddamnedfrank

I will say this though, if you do plan to go to one of these protests have a fucking plan for everything. Have a plan to meet up with your buddies if separated. Have a plan of action if things get squirrelly. Have a plan for dealing with tear gas. Have a plan for dealing with police, for what you’ll do if for whatever reason you’re arrested. Trust your gut, if it feels wrong it is wrong.

Also, do yourselves a huge favor, stay the fuck away from the Black Bloc.

I remember being at the first Smoke In in DC in 1970 on July 4th. I was 19. We drove down in a Uhaul van from Philly. Witnessed much insanity. After the shit completely hit the fan, after the searchlight trucks were overturned in the reflecting pool, and the open warfare at the Washington Monument with cop cars screaming through the lawns trying to hit people, we ended up somewhere out by the goverment buildings. Crowds of cops, some with riot gear, some not, on every other corner. Me and my buddies were standing about 25-30 feet from about 15 cops assessing what to do next. Some SDS/ Yippie slides up behind us, jumps up front, launches a Bali Hai wine bottle towards the cops. I stood there mesmerized as it went over and over in slow motion, right up to the point it slammed into the head of a cop with no helmet. A halo of broken glass around his head. He went down, they looked up, and then they all came screaming, running, shooting tear gas canisters at us. We ran for our lives. Yes. Stay away and know exactly who is around you and a good way to get the fuck OUT.

re: #80 EPR-radar

And this isn’t just Chaffetz. Generic Republicans favor jailing Hillary Clinton, and this will expand to all Democrats in short order.

This is the sign of a third world dictatorship or autocracy: investigate your opponents on bogus charges, force them to spend time and effort defending themselves, damage their reputation, and then imprison them. The Benghazi investigations certainly followed these steps, except for the imprisonment, but then there was a Democrat in the White House. It was not generic Republicans who persecuted her; it was the Republican establishment.

Chaffetz is a man with no honor or decency who cares nothing about the well-being of this country. It is terrifying that he is pursuing her rather than the Putin puppet in the White House. This bodes ill for our future. We now have unchecked single party control in both the legislative and executive branches. Let’s see if the court system can stop this.

Have people who document (photo, video). Have people who document the documentors. Maybe one level more than that.
