I follow this person on Twitter, because we share the same occupation, but her tweets and retweets are getting on my last nerve. Case in point.

I’ve already taken her to task several times about unreliable “news” sources, like Prison Planet, but she’s got extreme confirmation bias issues when it comes to Muslims and immigrants. So my efforts are useless.

Gonna unfollow her just to keep sane.

I made that point to her yesterday. If Sweden is beset by daily rapes, explosions and immigrant crime waves, one would expect it would be in Swedish newspapers and websites (other than the RW ones Teukka mentioned the other day).

But she’s a Trumper, though she works in Israel. Worse yet, she’s a fan of Bibi, so that gives you an idea of her mindset.

I said buh-bye.

This is where the conspiracy mindset is getting really dangerous. It’s spectral evidence, and the absence of evidence as evidence, fitted to the requirement of the believer.

We now have people in positions of tremendous power that believe this stuff. They can make these things “true” by acting on their beliefs as though they’re facts.

The Washington Times says they were handed over. The only other references I see are that they were supposed to be handed over. If it did happen, then it was late enough in the day that no one had started to go through them yet.

I follow her, and noted the wacky tweetstorm about Obama’s shadow government. Reasoning with these people is impossible, especially over Twitter. They’re the same kind of people who believe the Moon landings were all faked, 9/11 was organized by the CIA/Mossad/whateverr, and Hillary is an alien lizard in disguise. It’s hopeless.

Since I don’t know Haya Eytan IRL, I can’t try to persuade her to move away from the precipice of RW insanity. And my tweets to her bounce off her intellect like bullets off Supergirl. So I just shut off that channel. Maybe someday she will understand, but I doubt it.

I know I’m belaboring the point beyond normalcy, but there are very roughly 3 million Muslims in the U.S., and very roughly 800,000 doctors. That would mean, very very roughly, 1 in 4 Muslims are doctors.

Gonzalez, a Democrat who took office in January, said he will re-assign 10 county deputies trained under a U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement program known as 287(g) that cost at least $675,000 in salaries and deploy them to other law enforcement duties.
……………
The sheriff said serious overcrowding in the county jail complex, where staff shortages have hiked overtime costs to $1 million every two weeks, has forced him to deploy his ICE-trained deputies elsewhere. He said his decision was not political “but an issue of resources,” explaining the deputies may also be assigned to help improve clearance rates of major crimes or add to the patrol division.

Trump’s deportation plan is beginning to stack up some real costs for local law enforcement.

To answer the “is that even legal?” question: probably not.

I vaguely recall reading, while in college, that migrants from central and South America would try to adopt mexican slang accents, so if they were deported they’d be sent to Mexico rather than being sent all the way back. I don’t know how true that is or was, but fairly sure it was part of academic reading.

More on that wingnut tax money gutting education bill of Steve King’s.

It would appear that an unusual combination of people are opposed to it: Teachers unions and Libertarians.

The unions are opposed to it because it guts public education in favour of sending tax money to religious schools. In addition, the money given in vouchers would be exactly the same if you lived in Iowa or San Francisco (though schooling both public and private cost different amounts in those places). Moreover, it only pays through age seventeen, so students who normally graduate at age eighteen (as I did) would not be paid for the final year of school at all.

Libertarians are opposed for a different reason: The total amount of money given to a state is determined by the total number of children receiving education, whether in school or at home. They are opposed because the bill requires counting home-schooled children.

Apparently Libertarians are like gun nuts. If you register their children, next thing you know the government will be coming to round the children up and take them away.

The bill in question is HR830.

Trump has patently broken laws, or infringed upon them. The evidence is right there for an idiot to see, and if the GOP were really the “law & order” party, they’d be trying to get to the bottom of all this. Were Clinton the culprit, we’d have Congressional hearings from now till doomsday, and she’d be out of office by now. It would be President Kaine vs. an angry GOP Congress.

Instead, we’ve got the Crook-in-Chief doing the bidding of the plutocrats in the Kremlin and in Washington, DC, and Congress is letting him get away with it. It’s infuriating!

re: #91 Anymouse

I am quite sure GOP reps and senators were convinced that they were doing their constituents’ bidding, because they only listened to Republican constituents and the RW media shaping those voters’ ideas. Now, they’re encountering the reality that not all those Republican constituents like what they’re doing (or not doing), and they’re scared shitless.

If they get the idea they could be out of jobs come 2018 (or whenever) maybe they’ll reconsider their reactionary policies. I’m not hopeful on that point, because Republicans seem impenetrably thick when it comes to common sense.

I can’t think of anyone better to boo.

My representative would be good for me.

He doesn’t do town halls, he does telephonic meetings. That is understandable considering the area his district covers.

However, he uses call screeners to ensure he only gets questions that align with his interests. (He also says he only represents Republicans, which to a degree is true since he runs unopposed.) He will schedule a call for a certain length of time, and if there are not enough questions (that his screeners let through) he ends it early.

wonkette.com

Bryan Fischer ranting about the Gaystapo again …

In the video Wonkette provides (bring antacid) he whinges about a florist who was convicted on discrimination charges in her state. Her defence was novel (and futile): She claimed her florist business was an art form, not a business, thus not subject to Washington’s anti-discrimination law and protected by the I Amendment.

As the opinion of the court noted:

“As Stutzman acknowledged at deposition, providing flowers for a wedding between Muslims would not necessarily constitute an endorsement of Islam, nor would providing flowers for an atheist couple endorse atheism,” the opinion said.

She also got about a hundred times the actual fine from wingnut welfare on GoFundMe, plus the folk in Indiana that won’t provide gay pizza weddings also gave her some of their take.

So it’s just like Kristallnacht as Bryan Fischer puts it, if instead of Jews having their homes and businesses destroyed they were instead paid hundreds of thousands of dollars after losing a court case.

I’m amazed MSNBC let her say that on television. Butthurt from Golden Throne on Twitter coming this morning I’ll bet.

On the flower shop case, it takes a special kind of wingnut like Bryan Fischer to claim gays are trying to put a business out of business by bringing the business more business.

I recall that came up in a film about immigrants from the 1980’s…”El Norte”, in which refugees from Guatemala were urged to pretend they were Mexican.

Well, not quite, though I suppose it would depend on the size of the cart, as size matters. /s

Last time we were at FE Warren, the baggers pushed their carts out to our car to load it (the commissary does that). A woman came by complaining our car was parked in the handicap spaces (with a hanger). I had a discussion with the manager of the local supermarket…there were two handicapped spots out front: at Christmas time, one was blocked with a display of seasonal items.

The whole point of handicap parking is it is available for a handicapped person when needed. We don’t really have the benefit of going to another store though if a store owner is a jerk without driving a loooong way.

The full U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit in Richmond, Virginia, reconsidered a divided ruling issued last year that found citizens have a “fundamental right” to own these weapons, and that laws restricting the right deserve the toughest level of constitutional scrutiny.

Writing for a nine-judge majority, U.S. Circuit Judge Robert King said that weapons such as M-16s and the kind that “are most useful in military service” aren’t protected by the Second Amendment as interpreted by the Supreme Court in the landmark District of Columbia v. Heller decision. That ruling limited the right to ownership of handguns for self-defense within the home.

“Put simply,” King wrote, “we have no power to extend Second Amendment protection to the weapons of war that the Heller decision explicitly excluded from such coverage.”

The court separately rejected claims that Maryland’s assault weapons ban violated the 14th Amendment of the Constitution.

Ditto. I just read it, too. Comparing Milo and his coterie to Peter Pan and the Lost Boys was spot on, and she connected their hitherto consequence-free existence to Trump’s. His time has not come yet, but I’m hoping the convergence of Russian financial skullduggery, Russian political skullduggery, and overall epic incompetence will eventually bring him (and perhaps the GOP) down.

wonkette.com

Bryan Fischer ranting about the Gaystapo again …

In the video Wonkette provides (bring antacid) he whinges about a florist who was convicted on discrimination charges in her state. Her defence was novel (and futile): She claimed her florist business was an art form, not a business, thus not subject to Washington’s anti-discrimination law and protected by the I Amendment.

As the opinion of the court noted:

She also got about a hundred times the actual fine from wingnut welfare on GoFundMe, plus the folk in Indiana that won’t provide gay pizza weddings also gave her some of their take.

So it’s just like Kristallnacht as Bryan Fischer puts it, if instead of Jews having their homes and businesses destroyed they were instead paid hundreds of thousands of dollars after losing a court case.

They love co-opting the victim/martyr status of The Holocaust, but without any of the actual suffering and genocide.

re: #37 wheat-dogg

Lots of Indian doctors, you know. Some Hindu, some Muslim. I don’t think that stat is too far out.

“According to the American Medical Association (AMA), as of 2006, there were 921,904 U.S. physicians. The AMA does not report on the religion of its members. However, it is known, that 113,585 or 12% of US physicians in 2006 were Asian and 32,452 or 3.5% of physicians were African American.

In addition, a 2006 Association of American Medical Colleges study entitled “Diversity in the Physician Workforce” indicates that Indians and Pakistanis account for the largest population of Asian physicians. And while many Indian physicians may be Hindus, the Association of Physicians of Pakistani Descent of North America boasts a membership of 7,000 current and retired physicians.

Looking at the African American population, the US Census bureau reports that there are an estimated 40.2 million African Americans. U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee testimony given on October 14, 2003 suggests that as many as 2.4 million Muslims are African Americans, 5.9% of the total African American population. Based upon this figure, one can extrapolate that there are approximately 2000 Muslim physicians who are African American.

An analysis of all the above data suggests that more than 10% of American physicians are Muslim, while Muslims make up less than 3% of the total U.S. population. “Thus, its safe to say there is number of Muslim physicians is above average,” says Dr. Salim Aziz, a prominent heart surgeon with offices in Maryland and the District.”

muslimlinkpaper.com

The article’s making a kind of elementary inference error by trying to extrapolate the number of black Muslim doctors from the percentage of Muslims in the black community as a whole. The inference COULD be valid, but there’s no reason the number of Muslim doctors from that group could not be higher or lower than the percentage of doctors assumed by the writer.

Just saw this, about Texas Organizing Project (TOP), that is why Houston is fully under Democratic control: dailykos.com. This needs to be expanded to cities like Dallas, where only 59% of eligible voters voted.

From the article referenced in the DK article:

Ever since the era of Ann Richards, Democrats had been focusing their efforts (without success) on winning back white swing voters outside the big cities. But Zermeno realized that there was no reason “to beat our heads against the wall for that group of people anymore, not when we’ve got a million-voter gap and as many as four million non-voting people of color in the big cities, who are likely Democrats.” By relentlessly appealing to that shadow electorate, and gradually turning them into habitual voters, TOP could whittle down and eliminate the Republican advantage in elections for statewide offices such as governor and lieutenant governor, not to mention the state’s thirty-eight votes in the presidential Electoral College. In other words, since the existing Texas electorate was never going to generate a satisfactory result, TOP was going to have to grow a new one.…

Greets and saluts from the resistance. Trump’s still pushing immigration/Muslim ban stuff, and is still running headlong into the Constitution. He doesn’t care. The GOP doesn’t care. This is what they want, and they’re going to keep cheering him on, consequences be damned.

The immigration/deportation rules are guaranteed to sweep up American citizens. It’s impossible for them not to. That means ICE detaining American citizens. So, when people claim that this isn’t a constitutional violation, they don’t know what they’re talking about (and they’ve likely gotten their law degrees on Twitter).

As I was walking to work this morning, noticed that DHS cops were in Hoboken Terminal. That’s unusual. Typically, we’ll see NJ Transit police, occasionally national guardsmen, or most commonly NJ State Police, but I suspect the reason is that they were told to be visible.

Meanwhile, just because Flynn’s gone doesn’t mean the Russia scandal is over.

As much as the GOP wants to see this disappear from the media, it’s not going away. But the GOP wont act because the rank and file see Putin not as an enemy of the US, but as someone to emulate. They want an autocrat who pushes a kleptocracy and rewards his close confidants (but those riches/wealth never ends up at his most strident supporters at the ground level). Like Trump, Putin’s pushing policies that enrich himself, but Russians don’t see any of the benefits - just more misery.

Under Obama, the deportation focus has been put on to those who are a danger to the community. Trump’s claiming that he’ll focus on criminals (that’s the current focus), but you hit the nail squarely on the head - they’ll fixate on non-criminals to pad the numbers.

It’s far more costly to go after criminals who require deportation than to disrupt families who may be here illegally.

…the GOP wont act because the rank and file see Putin not as an enemy of the US, but as someone to emulate. They want an autocrat who pushes a kleptocracy and rewards his close confidants (but those riches/wealth never ends up at his most strident supporters at the ground level). Like Trump, Putin’s pushing policies that enrich himself, but Russians don’t see any of the benefits - just more misery.

And they like the way he he has enshrined the Russian Orthodox church as a theocratic institution.

IOW, everyone is a felon.

Trump & his deplorable zombie horde wave around the Katie Steinle bloody shirt, never mind that the careless firearm discharge that killed her is far more likely to come from citizen mishandling a weapon than from an immigrant.

Russia now just stamping FAKE on stuff that looks bad for Putin and Russia. Forget even applying facts/logic. This is what Trump’s doing, just not as succinctly or coherently.

Trump wants to delegitimize the media that covers him and all of his endless scandals. Putin’s more successful, mostly because Putin is far more coherent and effective at manipulating the media in Russia (mostly because the media protections in Russia are far less than the US 1A).

But that hasn’t stopped Trump from declaring war on a free press here - in direct violation of the 1A.

Under Obama, the deportation focus has been put on to those who are a danger to the community. Trump’s claiming that he’ll focus on criminals (that’s the current focus), but you hit the nail squarely on the head - they’ll fixate on non-criminals to pad the numbers.

[Embedded content]

It’s far more costly to go after criminals who require deportation than to disrupt families who may be here illegally.

Hasn’t the definition of criminal been expanded to include any infraction: for example, going 10 miles above the speed limit, or using a fraudulent Social Security number? And isn’t being here illegally a crime itself and therefore the person is immediately subject to deportation? This makes the immigrants even more subject to abuse and terrified of reporting real crimes for fear of being captured.

Reading the linked article, I noticed two things re the Sterling Heights mosque brouhaha:

1. The city has a large population of “Chaldeans” (Iraqi Christians, mainly immigrants): so I’m thinking at least some of the opposition to the new mosque isn’t from the “usual” sources.

2. This bit:

Both lawsuits allege that Sterling Heights violated the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act, which says the government can’t be biased against any religion when making land use decisions.

I wonder how long it will be before some GOP Congressman moves to gut or repeal this Act….?

Dem. politicians had to cope with that irrational anger, seeeecret muslim hoey, etc. Do you think being confronted with reality based, upset constituents, who know the issues and can form coherent sentences, is more threatening to R’s? I was taken with someone yelling, in response to Rep. flanneling on, “we are not stupid, answer the question.” Part of me thinks that this would be much more unsettling than people wearing T-bags, talking nonsense, tho as we know crazy/hate is effective Other part thinks that R’s disregard this sort of thing because Dem. response is always so diffused and fades at the ballot. They are currently trying to marginalize with the ‘paid agitator’ narrative, but (aside from Trump) R’s know that this is real unrest.

Growing up in the 80s in the metro Detroit area, the Chaldeans and the Muslim had weird love-hate relationships. The Chaldeans were largely bigoted against Muslims, but then found camaraderie in each other because most were from the Middle East.

Chaldeans were also the main beneficiaries of Saddam’s rule as well. Didn’t a Chaldean church in Detroit award a city key to Saddam during the 80s?

Because you know this is more of the Bernie or bust BS. The Bernie or Busters, ignoring that Bernie remains not registered as a Democrat, have already had more power than anyone in their position - getting crushed in the primaries by millions of votes - think that everyone should kowtow to their demands.

So sick of Bernie having this kind of power over the party.

I like Keith Ellison, but I think if he wants to be the DNC chairman he needs to shut this Bernie or bust shit down. Then he would show me something. If he allows it, he is weak. Yeah, it is that simple for me. I don’t know how it could be done, but he needs to tell Bernie to be a full Democrat Party member or shut the fuck up. And it needs to be expressed before the vote.

I’ve seen the latter - ABC city will allow new Synagogue to be built. There are some towns in NJ and NY that have tried to block new synagogues from being built, or there’s local resistance and the matter has gone to court. Rockland Cty in NY has been dealing with significant growth issues, and various towns are trying to limit influx of Orthodox Jews by limiting where/how new shuls can be built.

Factually correct, but - while it would be quite mistaken to discount the effects of garden-variety antisemitism when dealing with these “zoning” issues - the case of the Ultra-Orthodox in Rockland Country isn’t quite as simple as, say, the Sterling Heights mosque. The Haredi population in Rockland is, by design and volition, only tangentially part of the “community”: they are mainly exclusionist sectarians whose doctrines impel them to live in their own, self-contained communities (frankly, large, open-air voluntary ghettoes) - which nowadays contain tens of thousands, and create land use/zoning/development issues which are unusual, and difficult (due to their ethnic/”religious” nature) to adequately deal with.

I’m doing my part! We live in the boonies so a trip to town for groceries is an expedition we plan for and generally bring back plenty. Our garage/pole barn is detached so rather than make several trips we broke down and bought a full sized cart. We had been using the little green cart on the left but it will not hold a cart’s worth of groceries.

re: #295 Bluesigh

Current town hall ‘enthusiasm’ keeps being compared to the Tea Party malignancy in ‘09.
Dem. politicians had to cope with that irrational anger, seeeecret muslim hoey, etc.

Saying these town halls are just like the Tea Party protests is just another way for the GOP politicians to try to look past what is going on and it gives them an easy excuse. The GOP is great for easy excuses because most of the time their dumb ass base buys ‘em.

The only way they will take this serious is when they are beaten in the next vote and are sitting at home looking for a new job. Hopefully that is what happens.

I still believe a lot of the results since 2010 have been based on “throw the bums out thinking” that cost the Democrats big time in that election. It was still going on in 2012, 2014 and 2016.

Once people realize there infatuation with non-politicians and Tea Drinkers is stupid they will get back to electing people that actually understand politics.

The trick for the Democrats will be to make it known the GOP had all the power after 2016 and look what they did to this country.

Everything negative over the next two years needs three coats of GOP paint so the mess stands out.

Reposting this from downstairs because the more I think about it, the sillier it seems. He’s a racist POS but I don’t think he knows dick about these gestures.

The pictures being tweeted as evidence (

) from the ADL are actually showing two different prison gang signs.

adl.org
1 - A prison gang sign made with one hand only, specifically with the thumb pointing out, specific to a Texas prison gang.

2, “The Peckerwood” made with both hands but the fingers crossed on one hand.
adl.org

Let’s say he’s trying to be slick by using some combination of both, how recognizable would that be? He’s not doing either one even half correct according to the ADL’s descriptions. Who exactly was supposed to catch the whistle of a partial, incorrectly made gesture related to a Texas prison gang?

And also that the photo of Miller was taken by a Reuters photog as he was prepping for TV. He’d have to be pretty lucky they chose to run that photo of him nefariously shouting out WP skins out of any other shots taken of him that day.

These fuckers busy explaining away bigotry and hate because it’s not happening to “them.”

Not a dominant part of American life, unless you’re Jewish, in which case you’re the one being targeted on a regular and ongoing basis.

Same with racism and misogyny. It’s not a “dominant” part of American life, unless you’re a minority or a woman, in which case it shapes everything you do and everyone you come in contact with.

Grace Slick allowed a Jefferson Starship song to be used in a Chick-Fil-A superbowl commercial but donates all of her earnings from the event to Lambda Legal Defense.

From everything I’ve read, Grace wasn’t too fond of what the Starship turned into, so maybe she was thinking that they could use that shitty song Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now and it wouldn’t feel like she was betraying her ‘art’.

Grace says that “I come from a time when artists didn’t just sell their soul to the highest bidder, when musicians took a stand, when the message of songs was ‘feed your head,’ not ‘feed your wallet.’”, but then Jefferson Starship happened. Oops.

I’ve got a lot of respect for what Grace Slick and Paul Kantner have done, but I sometimes think it’s funny that they wanted to portray themselves as rebels to the end when they very quickly became as much of the corporate music biz as anyone.

But a huge ‘Yay!’ to Grace for donating the earnings for that commercial to Lambda. Her open letter is kind of a fun read. Those early ‘Levis’ commercials are a psychedelic hoot.

Got a large coffee for the price of a medium because they ran out of medium lids because Major partner is not spending any money on supplies when he can drag out the cups they quit using for some reason, and Minor partner is making do. Then I took care of the guy who keeps a chihuahua in his shirt. He got a set of wheels from the guy he gets all his bikes from (pretty sure he’s a thief, or business partner of one) and asked for sealer and air in the tires. I discovered he already had thorn resistant tubes and sealer, and I never charge for air, so I made my buck on a nut and spring for the front quick release. Then the son of the man who built my workbench 18 years ago this month came in and [re?] introduced himself. He is a carpenter like his father was (the father passed away a few years ago) and I told him the workbench will still be here when the rest of the town has blown away, as his father told me. After the son left, I realized the CD I’m playing was recorded in his father’s studio.

Time to go to work. Oh, wait a minute. I am at work. This is my work.

Reposting this from downstairs because the more I think about it, the sillier it seems. He’s a racist POS but I don’t think he knows dick about these gestures.

The pictures being tweeted as evidence (

[Embedded content]

) from the ADL are actually showing two different prison gang signs.

What you wrote makes sense. I think this should not be overthought.
