I am only too proud to say that I do not belong to a country club. Being so close to the money centers of the DFW metroplex, I can rub shoulders for free with obnoxious status-seekers, loathsome grifters, and drunken inbred gentry any time I might inexplicably want to do so.
Incidentally, the Lubbock Independent School District includes a premium country club membership with the superintendent’s compensation package. This at a time when they are bleating about the need for (probably doomed) federal aid to keep children’s lunch programs going.

Whelp, here’s what happens. Nunes does this crap and the response from the FBI and DOJ and others will be, “ongoing investigation.” They’ll never tell him anything again because he is potentially compromising their investigation.

One big thing out of all this….there was probable cause for FISA warrants. This investigation will not be wrapping up any time soon. Good.

1. This week every intel agency worth a damn has told Congress that Obama absolutely did NOT spy/tap Trump’s phone

2. So Trump WH looks terrible because he lied and implied his predecessor committed a crime.

3. So Nunes, gets a call from a “source” that claims intel agencies got “incidentally” picked up some stuff on Trump campaign?

Nunes, briefs Ryan, then runs to the WH to brief Trump. Then speaks to reporters without briefing the Intel Comt!?!?!?

5. Nunes acting on a “source” seems to have used his extremely important position to give Trump light cover on a manic tweet.

6. This is very dangerous. I have trouble seeing somebody like Mike Rogers doing this. Intel Chairmen don’t act like this.

7. Lastly, who was the Trump Campaign talking to that got them swept up? Nunes might want to care about that…

re: #8 Charles Johnson

Nunes must step down as head of this committee/investigation. He cannot do the job as he has conflicts of interest - starting with the fact that he was on Trump’s transition team.

Throw in the fact that he might have been among those caught in the FISA surveillance, and that he’s briefing Admin figures before he even consults with the ranking minority member on the committee, and he’s got some serious protocol violations, to say nothing of interfering with active investigations and informing targets of said investigations of the progress.

He may not pay a public price but he will pay a price behind the scenes. He managed to burn every intelligence agency involved in this investigation. They won’t ever tell him another damn thing. His effectiveness as a committee chair is done.

He can ask and demand but the fact is, they don’t HAVE to tell him anything. Or they can do what one of my friends in the community calls “grin-fucking.” Sit there and smile and nod their heads and tell him as little as possible, while thinking, “fuck you” the whole time.

They have a job to do and politicians that interfere with it make them absolutely furious.

Nunes’ leaking of classified info to “cover” Trump is in no way a vindication of Trump’s claims.

In the absolute and objective sense, it most certainly is not.

In the modern alternate media reality sense it is, and that is what they are going for.

And as a bonus, it is fully in line with their assertions that there is a Deep State Conspiracy out there drying to bring down our Democratically Elected leader and replace him with a Leftist Cabal.

Why Russia Has To Spend $350 Million Fixing Its Broken-Down Aircraft Carrier

Repairs to be conducted on the Kuznetsov, which recently returned from duty in the Mediterranean, include the fixing four of its eight boilers; the other four will be replaced.

It may surprise Foxtrot Alpha readers that Russia will spend so much money modernizing the vessel. In the past, we’ve made fun of the the aircraft carrier’s mechanical issues, including that time a tugboat had to pull it back to dock after it broke down off the coast of Spain. I once called the carrier the “hooptie of the sea.” In 1996 during military exercises in the Mediterranean, the carrier’s distillation equipment failed, leaving the crew of 2,000 short of potable water, according to the New York Times. The U.S. Navy eventually helped the crew out.

Part of why the Kuznetsov has had so many issues, as The National Interest points out, is due to its poor maintenance and lack of trained staff:

Naval aviation is an inherently dangerous business, but many of Russia’s naval aviation mishaps are due to a lack of experience and proficiency in carrier-based operations. While some of the Russian Navy’s problems can be attributed to the elderly Kuznetsov’s many inherent flaws, the Russians have not developed the proper procedures or practices to operate carrier-borne aircraft safely at sea.

But we gotta spend 54 billion more?

Went to check my Facebook, where the usual suspects were being celebratory and my usual liberal readers were being “well, this could be bad for us.” This was my response:

“Good Lord, here we go again, people.

Incidental communications are picked up when a legitimate, approved person under FISA investigation communicates with a 3rd party U.S citizen and it is picked up as part of that monitoring/recording.

Not only is it legal and unavoidable when there are two people communicating with each other, the disturbing part is that Trump and some of his associates were picked up in conversations with multiple people under FISA warrants.

Incidental communication is not the same as wiretapping. The only reason there was any kind of data collected is because people were in contact with subjects of FISA surveillance. Had they not been, there would be no data whatsoever. This is called logic.

It hurts my brain so much, so very much, that this has to be explained to some of you. Take 5 minutes to read before you fire off a response next time.”

Believe it or not, some people find me charming.

I entirely enjoyed that series. Also loved Ripper Street, set about the same time but in London. Much edgier.

Needs more men running a bucket line.

The Hellenic Navy has an actual oar-driven trireme, the Olympias.

This was built in Piraeus in the 1980s as an exercise in experimental archeology. It is as close to original design as modern designers and historians could make it. It is currently dry-docked as a museum exhibit but has been to sea several times.

I have Cox Cable in Phoenix, AZ. Was watch Monk on Hallmark channel. My TV abruptly changed to Fox news showing Schiff speaking for about a minute and a half. I could not change the channel.

Other TV with digital DVR box just had a weird ‘Emergency Test’ like banner and sound. Then both TV’s went back to normal. So goofy!

I guess as I get older it’s more difficult for me to find interest in a storyline once it’s been stretched a bit too much.

here’s something to chew over:

for decades, the nightmare of progressives has been the unrelenting fight of large corporations to arrange things for their own convenience. the gop dutifully did everthing it could to reduce regulations and taxes as per spec, and to pursue “free” trade pacts that would help companies maximize profits

now all of a sudden we are being warned of a new nightmare, where putin is manipulating the u.s. (among other nations) in such a way as to destroy american economic dominance and geo political power. this includes restricting the reach and maneuvering ability of american companies by creating barriers to free trade, and also disadvantaging them by ultimately weakening the worldwide american military & etc protection they benefit from

now, corporations have been in some ways more powerful than governments for a long time. and putin’s russia is like a large mafia corporation. and none of these here fellers play nice

it seems to me that the logical outcome of this scenario, if we are to believe it, should be the Worldwide Battle to the Death of the Western Corporate Behemoths vs the Russian Mafia State

excuse me while i go find a rock to hide under

If this shit happened 40 or so years ago in America the Republicans would be scrambling to save their butts and they would burn Nunes at the stake…and an independent investigation would already be underway on Trump with Congress holding off on allowing him to do anything while he is investigated.

And the media would have all the dogs sniffing everything.

Back when the GOP at least gave some lip service to the idea that they really gave a damn about the country and its citizens; nowadays, they don’t even pretend to give a shit about anyone who isn’t shoveling loads of cash into their pockets and/or isn’t enabling them to grab more and more political power.

Dems should keep up the pressure. They might be able to get his chairmanship taken away.

Nunes getting canned is a limited victory.

Getting to the bottom of what Trump did vis a vis Russia is the goal. Figuring out who among his cabal of cronies was involved is the goal.

If Nunes goes down (and gets charged for violating any number of crimes, including obstruction of justice or improper release of classified info), so much the better.

Manafort, Stone, and all the rest are involved - and they know it. Even the GOP knows it. That’s why Nunes acted as he did. He tried to muddy the waters to give Trump a talking point.

It worked to the point that Trump sent out a campaign presser touting it.

Of course, they lied about what Nunes actually said, but it doesn’t matter to Trump supporters. They’ve bought everything else Trump’s said to date, so this is just one more lie they’ve bought.

Chuck Todds panelists were all on the same page today.

The Nunes ploy was all a smoke screen cover for Trump.

The Republican Senators are in hiding on all this but they are stunned about the Trump problems but they are going to eventually bust out and it won’t be pretty.

One of them (I don’t know his name?) said he wouldn’t be surprised if Trump goes full nuclear and pardons Manafort, Flynn, Stone, etc. That would sure be a mess, but this is Trump…he will do whatever he can to save his Orange Butt.

Limited yes, but it is still a tube of color in the old paint box. And it can be used to paint the entire picture of the slimy Republicans and how they are acting to save Trump and their party.

I’ll take it. And, I will hope it leads to more.

Oh, I wouldn’t say it was a lapse in judgement. More likely Nunes was getting pressure from the WH to do something, ANYTHING, to muddy the water on the surveillance thing, because the stark denials from Monday were costing Trump.

Whether the WH was in on exactly what Nunes chose to do, hard to say. But this was deliberate, and very likely coordinated with the WH.

The entire country could be deconstructed before a special prosecutor is ready to reveal.

From a recent redstate.com commenter “celador2” responding to a question “Has the mayor issued a statement yet on today’s murders?”

NO statement, the new mayor is silent and out of sight. One of the biggest shames of the day has been the absense of the mayor of London today not standing up against the terror attack on the city and Parliament.

He is as in your face as they come in defiance of western and English values. Yet Khan lives among them and soaks up privilege. He is a disgrace as an official but a reflection of the majority who vote. Far left and Muslim won the election and how that shows.

That’s the thing about this Administration - they have to expend so much political capital in managing daily crises, all of their own making, that they won’t have any left when they need it.

Take this wiretapping nonsense, for example - Trump ragetweets one morning on the shitter, making a wild accusation of felonious conduct by Obama, solely on the basis of a Breitbart article.

To defend himself, he’s damaged relations with two of our strongest allies; triggered a very public denial from the IC, along with the public confirmation of an FBI investigation into the campaigns ties with Russia; further destroyed whatever credibility Sean Spicer may have had left; destroyed any credibility HE may have had left; pushed Gorsuch’s hearing off the page; imperiled the GOP’s legislative agenda; and now, just to save Trumps standing with the stupidest of the base, made Nunes probably fall on his sword to get a headline for a day while likely triggering a independent commission to investigate.

Everything they do is built around salvaging the current news cycle from their own incompetence, at the expense of their own future. Trump has lied so blatantly about such easily debunked things when the lie gained him nothing that when the electronics ban in flights from the Middle East came out, the default assumption was that the claimed threat was bullshit. They’ve squandered their credibility, indeed the entire nation’s credibility, on Trump’s ego.

Can you believe that it was just 3 weeks ago that Trump gave a mediocre speech widely hailed as ‘turning the corner’ on the rough first 5 weeks? Anyone remember the speech anymore? I don’t think it even lasted a full news cycle, because IIRC Sessions contacts with Russia blew up right after that.

It has not aged well at all, has it? Just like how the GOP introduced the AHCA two weeks ago, promising a vote 48 hours after its introduction. Now they’re limping along, promising a vote even though all signs are that the bill is DOA.

We’re over 60 days into Trump’s first 100 and the only thing he has accomplished so far is convincing tens of millions of Americans that their president is a raving loon.

I guess the point I’m drifting towards is that Nunes took one for the team. It really will be a diversion from the increasingly potent Putingate coverage.

Stop drifting!

It is more wood for the fire. Only those in trouble will be hoping this is a diversion. To me it is more evidence of Trump doing more bad shit to cover for the real bad shit? It all goes together and starting to show a continued pattern of corruption.

As far as Nunes, he is going to find eventually he was a fool.

And thanks to Nunes revealing what was classified information confirming that there is a there there, i.e. Cult45ers talking to Russians under legal surveillance, Schiff can come out publicly and say this because the horse has done galloped outa the barn. Nonsense! Why he’s kept a couple of promises. Actually 6 (and broken 2 already) according to the WaPo, (other sites say 2-it depends on which policy items they’re tracking out of hundreds of random promises.)

Hint: the “promises kept” run to things like proposing stuff, and signing EOs about regulations and pulling out of the TPP. Not actual accomplishments.

I admit to being somewhat amused that people still think that with the huge GOP media/propaganda machine running at full bore, any Republican will pay any price for anything they do.

Not going to happen, not today, not tomorrow, not anytime in the future unless some senior sitting GOP Congressmen/Senators decide that the country is worth more than their running it.

As I said, not going to happen.

America, 2017:

This West Virginia school district has weekly Bible classes. A kindergartner is suing.

A kindergartner is battling county officials in federal court over Bible classes in public school.

In a federal lawsuit filed in January, Jane Doe, a pseudonymous plaintiff who is the mother of Mercer County, w.va., kindergartner Jamie Doe, challenged the county’s “Bible in the Schools” program, saying it was unconstitutional.

[…]

One lesson, described in the suit, asked students to “imagine that human beings and dinosaurs existed at the same time.”

[…]

The school district’s motion also pointed out that the classes, which are paid for by a nonprofit organization, receive no public funding.

[…]

“Receives no public funding” - yeah, right. As if each minute of the school day has it’s own non-mixed funds.

And then we wonder why this state went so heavily for Trump?

Dana Milbank on Neil “Eddie Haskell” Gorsuch.

The nomination of Neil Gorsuch presents the Senate with a constitutional dilemma: Is this nation prepared to have Eddie Haskell serving a lifetime appointment on the Supreme Court?

The most noteworthy thing to emerge from Gorsuch’s testimony Tuesday before the Senate Judiciary Committee wasn’t his judicial philosophy (conservative), his credentials (considerable) nor even the likelihood of confirmation (virtually certain). What stood out was his aw-shucks, good-golly manner: Gorsuch played a folksy sycophant straight out of the 1950s.

No fewer than eight times he punctuated his testimony with “Leave It to Beaver” exclamations of “goodness” — “goodness, no!” “oh, my goodness!” — and, though only 49 years old, spoke in archaic phrases: “since I was a tot,” “a fair and square deal,” “doesn’t give a whit.”

This is so very cool in all of the expected and unexpected ways. Lennon and Claypool.

As a King Crimson lover I was amazed when I first heard this live concert and they broke into The Court of the Crimson King.

If I remember they also do a version of this by the Beatles. (This may not be the same concert)

America, 2017:

This West Virginia school district has weekly Bible classes. A kindergartner is suing.

“Receives no public funding” - yeah, right. As if each minute of the school day has it’s own non-mixed funds.

And then we wonder why this state went so heavily for Trump?

Surely the Texas AG expressing concern over Liberty High School in Frisco, TX and their multi-faith prayer room won’t have an issue with this.

The most notable case of defenestration in recent times was probably that of Jan Masaryk, the Czech foreign minister who opposed the communist take-over in 1948. At the time it was ruled a suicide but a post communist court found that he had been deliberately thrown out the window by local communist goons and their NKVD allies.

Not strictly defenestration in this case in Japan (and not proven murder), but the acclaimed director Itami Juzo was likely thrown from the roof of a building by the yakuza in retaliation for his relentless mockery of them in several films (and there was also blackmail over an affair leading up to it; and they had earlier slashed his face with a razor). I think it’s still officially a suicide, though.

“He was depressed, so he shot himself”
“In the back? Twice?”
“Well, he was REALLY depressed!”

A non-trivial number of suicides actually are multiple-shot. That’s by determined people not put off by a failed first shot. Don’t go with a .22.

As my wife observed today, “The press is surprised that the teabaggers are total amateurs at politics?”

re: #497 freetoken

What can we say about a society in 2017, when it contains schools in which children are being taught humans lived with dinosaurs, in public schools?

Why are we at all surprised these same people were so easy marks for Trump?

Someone should run parallels between what conservatives are doing now vs ancient societies that knew when eclipses occurred and used them to control the population.

Predicting eclipses requires both work and paying attention to reality. US conservatives are incapable of either.

so… to sum things up, just to make sure that I have this all straight in my brain….

Apparently Trump has been in the pocket of Putin/Russia for at least a decade then, because that’s how his “empire” remained afloat, apparently for both money laundering purposes and political wedge into US Politics…

The Guys who apparently can’t get elected legally (GOP) decide to look the other way because they can’t defend their association with bigots, racists, nazis and other rank and file idiocy that is their constituency because they essentially only have culture wars remaining in stock, other than the being the political minions of the evil moneyed elite.

So then the Trump team meets in less than circumspect circumstances with the Russians to receive aide and comfort in order to do dirt on their political enemies. See Mssrs. Lewandoski, Manafort, Page and Stone.

The GOP political brass catches wind of this, because the Russian guys are mobbed up with the Russian mafia and the US Intel services keep tabs on these fuckers.

The GOP tells 44 that he can’t go public with this or else they’ll scream “partisan politics” and make the entire campaign about the candidates instead of the issues. 44, being 44, puts his faith in the American people. The GOP buys ad time and allows the media to make the campaign the latest reality TV craze.

Then the Trump campaign plays the media (and their noted Clinton antipathy) successfully to make it seem like she’s the untrustworthy one, while they’re actually colluding with a foreign power to win the election.

Mission accomplished, media compliant (for a time), GOP wins everything that their hearts desire… yet

It’s tainted as fuck
the GOP wants to brazen it out
The media continues to play push me/pull you on being GOP sycophants and not being able to resist the story that they should have been working on six months ago…

so now the question becomes

will the GOP still adhere to the rule of law when all of this illegal shit becomes known or do they go full fascist and try and keep control?

I wish I could say the former, but all of their behavior and the type of crap that continues to be passed off as “normal” makes me dubious as hell.

I don’t care how late to this thread I am - YES! The ending of BSG was PERFECT and anyone who disagrees clearly didn’t watch the show.

The pre/sequel was also amazing.

While surrounded by bodyguards. Don’t forget that part.

Breslin had him pegged so many years ago.

After Trump took out a full-page newspaper ad in 1989 calling for the executions of the (ultimately innocent) “Central Park Five” suspects, Breslin advised readers, “beware always of the loudmouth taking advantage of the situation and appealing to a crowd’s meanest nature.”

He said Trump touted tough talk that could only come “from someone who walks around with bodyguards.”

I think I should play “The Sound of Silence” in honor of all the Republicans not presently expressing outrage and taking Nunes to task for leaking classified information to the press.
