Federal Judge in Hawaii Extends Injunction Against Trump’s Muslim Travel Ban

Tonight, the injunction blocking Donald Trump’s Muslim ban has been extended by federal Judge Derrick Watson in Hawaii.

The original injunction was only valid for 14 days; this will keep Trump’s bigoted order from being enforced until the issue is decided in court.

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A federal judge in Hawaii on Wednesday extended the state’s block on President Trump’s revised travel ban, issuing a preliminary injunction that will keep the executive order shelved while its fate is decided in court.

U.S. District Judge Derrick Watson first granted the state’s request for a TRO on the ban two weeks ago, preventing the federal government from suspending new visas for people from six Muslim-majority countries and freezing the nation’s refugee program.

“It is always in the public’s interest to protect constitutional rights,” Hawaii Attorney General Doug Chin said in court on Wednesday.

During the hearing, attorneys for the state told Judge Watson that comments made by President Trump on the day of Watson’s previous ruling — where the president called the revised travel ban a “watered down” version of the order — served to strengthen their stance.

“If [the state’s] position was strong two weeks ago, it is stronger today,” said Chin, who added that President Trump’s “plainly worded statements betray the executive order’s stated purpose.

Chin later read aloud for the court a series of the president’s previous quotes, dating back to the campaign trail, that were critical of the Muslim faith or Muslim refugees.

“Even devoting a minute to stringing these together really drives the point home,” he said.

With the real world being buried under mountains of horse shit and besieged by hordes of Russian stooges and Republicans, I decided to escape with some re-runs of MST-3000 from Netflix. The first episode I’m watching trashes the execrable 1967 Catalina Caper. This was the last, and quite possibly the worst, of the beach party movies. I had forgotten just how funny MST 3000 really is so it’s a great break.

Too late for me to read the whole thing, so I’m just going to crib from Daily Kos (the quoted section is from Fortune):

ExxonMobil, the world’s largest publicly traded oil and gas company, is urging the White House to stick with the global climate agreement reached in Paris last year.

In a letter sent to the White House on March 22 — days before President Donald Trump signed an executive order rolling back Barack Obama’s climate legacy — Exxon told the administration that the Paris agreement is an “effective framework for addressing the risks of climate change” and that the U.S. is “well positioned to compete” under the deal, according to CNN Money.

Could be an advantage in campaigning. An entire generation of RWNJ dupes have grown up without knowing about his, er, performance as vice-president. Lumpy and Limbaugh never mention it so it never happened as far as the base is concerned. If they bring it up, he can squawk about fake news and accuse them of selling out to the CIA and the Clinton Crime Family.

We were discussing this the other night:

A Single Robot May Cost Up to 6 Workers’ Jobs

[…]

The economists studied the impact of rising industrial robot usage and found that each new robot per thousand workers reduced the employment-to-population ratio by about 0.18 to 0.34 percentage points, and wages fell between 0.25% and 0.50%. Or, more plainly said, for every robot added to the U.S. economy since 1990, 3.0 to 5.6 workers lost their jobs.

[…]

What it means to live in the 21st century is to live in a time of an over-abundance of labor. We can and have and more so in the future will replace human labor with mechanism, hardware and software.

First off, if you really want to cut down on information sharing, junk mail and annoying phone calls and pre-screened credit card offers, there are several things you can do….

Stopping Unsolicited Mail, Phone Calls, and Email (FTC)

Opting out from Pre-screened Credit Line offerings

Other steps to take:

Do NOT sign up for loyalty/reward programs with retailers
Review your Privacy Notifications you will periodically receive from every firm you have a relationship with
Know your privacy rights - Privacy Rights Clearinghouse

As far as Trump’s nonsense goes in allowing ISP’s to sell your browsing data: subscribe to a VPN service, use Tor/Qubes, and use DuckDuckGo for searching.

It really is Pence’s own business how he manages his relationship with his wife, but I am simply struck by the contrast between a VP who will not go out in public with another woman and a President who used to wander around the dressing rooms at the Miss Universe pageant.

The church I work at has that rule. No married man can been around a woman alone that is not his wife. I find it interesting that they also think atheists can’t have morals without God but it’s impossible for Christians to do what’s right (like not cheating on your wife) without having all of these rules to keep you from being tempted in the first place.

Ah, intra-GOP ratfucking is fun to watch sometimes:

Republican gubernatorial candidate Corey Stewart attacked his GOP primary rival Ed Gillespie in a new, Confederate-themed ad that included an altered newspaper headline the Gillespie campaign has denounced as blatantly false.

The one-minute ad — which the Stewart campaign said will cost in the “mid five digits” and run in an online video and on radio statewide — includes the same altered headline, meant to appear as if it was published by The Washington Post, that has already been pulled from Facebook after complaints by the Gillespie campaign.

“Gillespie: I’m OK with Charlottesville Taking Down the General Lee Monument” the headline reads in the video, a repeat of a fake headline circulated on Facebook by a conservative group called the Conservative Response Team, as first reported by The Associated Press.

Some of our worst panderers to the CSA fanboys and girls have been Yankee transplants like Stewart. Interestingly enough both our two Democratic candidates are VA natives which is a contrast between our past and present Democratic governors like Warner, Kaine, and McAuliffe. Creigh Deeds was from Virginia too. Nothing wrong with being a transplant. Nearly seven years later, in 2006, a state police detective, Todd Harwood, got the cold case. This time, a judge granted a search warrant, and Harwood took a section of King’s kitchen floor to compare the bullets embedded in it with those found in Breeden’s skull.

Harwood later told a grand jury the results of the tests were inconclusive, although both sets of bullets were .22 caliber. He testified the floor had been cleaned with a solvent that scraped away a layer of linoleum. According to King, Harwood testified that phone records showed King stopped calling Breeden before his body had been found, as though she already knew he was dead. His theory was that King shot Breeden in her home, dragged his body to her car, drove to the Gratz Bridge, threw his body over the railing, and then cleaned the blood from the crime scene.

None of it was true. And now a U.S. Court of Appeals has determined that King can sue Harwood for “malicious prosecution” and the tragic consequences that followed.

According to court documents, a state police firearms examiner actually told Harwood the bullets didn’t match. A lab report said no cleaning solvents were found on the floor sample. Phone records showed King rarely called Breeden anyway; he usually called her.

Nothing like an out-of-touch billionaire elite talking about school choice as though people choose between which car hailing service they use:

Most Americans don’t have a choice because they can’t afford one. Public schools are where more than 90% of students get their basic education through HS. Private schools, or charter schools aren’t going to be a solution for everyone, or even most people. It’s a fringe answer, and one that is rife with its own problems (as we’ve seen in NYC where some charter schools can’t make the grade either).

But this is Devos, so it’s entirely predictable.

You have to wonder if they’re also the same people who’d claim that a woman who was raped had it coming. It’s the same logic.

She’s so woefully out of touch. Anyhow, a school is a microcosm of the community as a whole. Your classmates are your neighbors often. Public schools especially foster a sense of community. And quite honestly a lot of these private schools and charter schools are lacking in the programs that help students with learning disabilities. And DeVos in her usual out of touch self doesn’t think about them because she doesn’t seem to care.

I’ve had meals with not one, not two, but three single female co-workers at the same time, which would have been totally scandalous if we hadn’t talked shop, family stuff, and other nerdy topics the entire time.

Oh, and there were copious amounts of beer involved, and not once did I contemplate destroying my marriage. I enjoyed the beer, the food, and the company. That’s it.

I think a lot of the outrage (and faux-outrage) about people pushing back on Pence’s odd worldview is really coming from people who have never had female colleagues at or above their own level at a company or other institution. In fact, I think it’s a larger cultural phenomenon: younger generations are realizing that this worldview is bullshit, and some of the old, white men in power don’t like it.

I’ve been working with women engineers and managers for my entire professional career and it’s been better for it, and if I’m not allowed to socialize with my co-workers just because of their genitalia, everyone loses.

Speaking of ignorance, or is it just being obtuse, did anyone see or hear the exchange between the DEA head and Trump at the meeting Trump had regarding the drug problems in this country?

The DEA guy went on to a long explanation of how all the Oxycontin and Hydrocodone pain killers giving out by MDs and the drug industry got people hooked on opioids, then when people are no longer given ‘scripts they switch to the much cheaper and now prevalent heroin.

Trump then asked something like: do you see numbers that show this started to increase due to the lax border protection of the last 6 or so years (that Obama guy again!)?

He totally missed the damn point the DEA guy was trying to make. It is the prescription drugs given out like candy for so many years that caused the problem…not the damn border walls.

The freaking border wall is not going to stop heroin from getting into this country.

Maybe, just maybe if we didn’t create so many drug users “legally” we might not have the illegal problems.

And guess who made up this panel from the Trump side of the table?

reason.com - Donald Trump’s Opioid Commission Is Stacked With Prosecutors and 12-Steppers

Will any drug policy experts sit on Trump’s drug policy commission?

The Washington Post reports that President Donald Trump will announce today the creation of a federal opioid commission. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie will be the chair, and the rollout will feature a who’s who of federal bureaucrats, from Attorney General Jeff Sessions, to acting Drug Czar Richard Baum, to Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi.
