Unpossible, Trump never settles!
Just days after the Trump Organization and Chef Jose Andres’ ThinkFoodGroup announced a settlement in their dueling lawsuits over Andres’ decision to pull out of plans for a Trump International Hotel restaurant, a settlement of a similar dispute involving celebrity chef Geoffrey Zakarian has been announced.
Like the Andres settlement, terms of the Zakarian settlement weren’t disclosed.
“I am glad that we were able to work together cooperatively to put this matter behind us and wish Trump International the very best going forward,” said Louis Ceruzzi, the New York real estate developer who had agreed to back Zakarian’s restaurant.
Ceruzzi’s BVS Acquisition Co. LLC was named in the lawsuit, as was Zakarian’s company CZ-National LLC.
“After an intense, two-year legal battle, we are pleased we were able to amicably resolve our differences and wish Geoffrey continued success,” said The Trump Organization in a statement.
Ah-yep. Olbermann pretty much nailed it. Kayfabe rules the day once again. This is Trump’s world, and we just live in it.

The media don’t “fall for” this stuff. They aid and abet because ratings. I doubt there’s a “reporter” anywhere, even among the countless airheads on Fox, who doesn’t know the score, but they also know the bottom line on their paychecks. Fuck it, if Trump nuked London, almost every one of these craven bootsuckers would be looking only for ways to string the story out, MBF it, and do whatever it took to keep their corporate bosses happy and the views and clicks coming. Except for the occasional hardnosed holdout fighting a last stand on some lonely hillside, journalism has been dead in this country so long it has lichens growing on its tombstone.

Stunt indeed. Could Scott Ritter be right to doubt the veracity of the Trump administration line? Too easy, so seriously doubt the Syrians did it? Maybe the Syrians hit an Al Nusra chemical stash, maybe chlorine rather than sarin. I think that’s worth watching but could be a futile as Trump tax returns. Just won’t come out.

To be fair, I haven’t attempted any of these climbs since I’ve been here. I have done some non-technical climbing. I got up at 2AM to start at 3AM hike up Longs Peak in Colorado and made it to the top by early morning because I was told it gets dangerous after the noon hour. I’ve climbed (with experienced climbers) in Japan’s northern and central “alps” (and three ascents in Hokkaido). I think I could have been in some danger without the help of really experienced people.
But the point is that all of these demand a certain amount of respect that most people understand. The White Mountains—and I stress that I’m relatively new here, so I’m parroting what I read in the local paper—seem so inviting to not just locals but also day-trippers (whom NH courts) from New England. Seems like every week there are multiple rescues for those caught in changing weather or finding themselves in steep, slippery descents. There is apparently a campaign to recruit volunteers to stand at trailheads to educate now.

First time I climbed Longs Peak I was a teenager, went with my mountaineering extraordinaire brother-in-law and did a rather technical route on the Diamond, called Kieners Route. Had to rope up for a couple of pitches right above Broadway. Didn’t see a soul the whole day. Then we get to the top (the summit appears very abruptly on Kieners Route) and we’re in a whole different world. Hundreds of people milling about, a lot of them asking where we came from, we were equipped with harnesses, ropes, helmets, rock climbing gear, etc., we were an unusual sight among the weekend warriors up there.
We descended via the Keyhole Route, and Homestretch reminded me of a queue in an amusement park, one solid lane of people going up and one going down.

Not good; no, real bad; no, absolutely horrible news for the state of 10,000 lakes…
(LGF Page here)
Star Tribune: Rising salt levels threaten Twin Cities lakes by 2050
Twin Cities is a hot spot in a national study of lakes and road-salt runoff. It showed that salt concentrations in the Mississippi, mostly from road salt, have increased 81 percent since 1985.
Many lakes around the Twin Cities are becoming so salty from winter road maintenance that, within three decades, they will no longer support native fish and plants.
The lakes were included in the first study of freshwater chloride contamination across the northern region of the country, an area that has one of the highest density of lakes on earth. The researchers found that lakes showed steadily rising concentrations of chloride even with just one percent impervious land cover around their perimeters.
The Twin Cities turned out to be among the saltiest.
“One of the most impacted areas is Minneapolis and St. Paul, where you have dozens of small lakes,” said Hilary Dugan, the lead researcher and a limnologist at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. “The smaller the lake, the more easily you load it with salt.”
Altogether, researchers analyzed the salt histories of 371 lakes in 10 northern states and Ontario, Canada — 62 of which were in the Twin Cities metro area. The study was published Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academies of Science.
The study could provide new guidance for environmental campaigns in many northern states, including Minnesota, to use less salt. While many of those efforts focus on road and street agencies like MnDOT, Dugan said homeowners and private businesses are to blame for about half the salt used each winter. And no one knows how much they are using.

I quit using salt a long time ago more out of concern for my yard and sidewalk pavers. Just putting down sand provides enough grit to combat sidewalk slips. People in St. Paul bitch like crazy if the city hasn’t treated the streets before a slippery snow. A couple times a year, there is a pre-emptive spread of ice-melt that goes to waste when the snow misses town. That said, it’s still surprising to me that it’s that big a problem. Bummer.

Even if they do see Trump’s tax returns, there should be no Democratic support for a giant tax cut for millionaires and billionaires. What Democrats should support, IMO, is a big refundable tax credit which would effectively create a basic income for all Americans. Pay for it with a carbon tax.
