I’m just sick about the abduction and probably killing of a visiting Chinese scholar in my hometown. Authorities believe there is not much chance she is alive, but still praying.

Did my good deed for the day. This morning I spotted a dog in my driveway. It was something like an Old English Sheepdog but smaller, maybe 25 pounds. His fur was matted and very dirty. To my surprise I was able to walk right up to him and pick him up. He had on a collar and partial leash with a Petsmart tag. This gave his name as “Rocko” and had a couple of phone numbers and a Weatherford address. I called the numbers but got only voicemail. I was headed that way anyway so I loaded Rocko in the car and drove to the address, or what I thought was the address. Turns out I had a senior moment, misread the street sign, and tried to deliver him to a house one block over from the real owners. The folks at the house were very nice despite the early hour and sent me to my true destination. The owners were a young couple who were over-joyed to see Rocko. They said he had been missing 3 days and they had almost given up hope of seeing him again. They also told me that he is 11 years old. He had made his way 12 miles to my house along the Interstate and rural roads. It was wonderful to see their faces, and his, when they opened the door. I’m glad I had the opportunity.

The freedom to be able to discriminate, but not be discriminated against, shall not be abridged for fragile white Christians. Or something like that.

Wait—he not only flew to New Jersey for less than a day before coming back to fight the War on Christmas for a few hours—he’s going back to New Jersey tonight, then back to DC on Monday so he can (I guess) celebrate Christmas in July at the White House.

According to White House public schedules, Trump flew to Bedminster, New Jersey Friday at 4:20 p.m. Friday afternoon. Public schedules for Saturday, July 1, 2017 reveal Trump will leave New Jersey for Washington a little over 24 hours after arriving. This all to attend the Celebrate Freedom Rally at the Kennedy Center, and fly back to New Jersey for the night. Trump is then expected to return to Washington Monday evening before the Independence Day festivities.

So, last night, She Who Must Be Obeyed played a gig w/ one of her bands (Diminished 7) and John Burnett sat in on mouth harp. She is stunt clarsach and accordion. Mostly clarsach. Western swing, old americana, early blues, &c.

Besides being an NPR reporter of some repute (an embed with the Marines on the road to Baghdad in 2003 and the first guy into New Orleans after Katrina where he tore a new asshole into the Bush Administration on live radio), John is an amazing musician, a protege of Brandon Powers.

Great show. Austin doesn’t realize how good the musicians are in this town are. Well, some of us do, but the fact remains that The Green Mesquite BBQ restaurant is a great coup of a gig says something.

John’s 6’ 8”, by the way. He looks like a Giacometti sculpture.

Classic (from 2002) Wisconsin conservative:

DOYLE WANTS DIVERTED FUNDS USED FOR ANTI-SMOKING FIGHT

What Wisconsin lawmakers did, with the approval of then-Gov. Scott McCallum, was sell the state’s $5.9 billion anticipated tobacco settlement to investors for a $1.6 billion upfront payment, which was then used to help balance the state budget. The ongoing payments from the settlement are going toward debt service on the bonds that were issued as part of the sale.

Had a democrat pulled a shitty stunt like this, Charlie Sykes, Mark Belling and all the other ones would still to this day be bitching about it. They never said shit about it.

I wish I could find the video of Buzz’s first network TV appearance, back in 1953. It is a brief clip from the CBS Evening News and shows Buzz, then an unknown 1st Lieutenant and an F-86 pilot in Korea, describing his gun camera footage of a kill against a Soviet MiG-15 fighter. I have seen it on the net but can’t seem to find it now.

Repeal and no replacement of the ACA is not going to happen. The entire heath industry is in a holding pattern now waiting to see what the replacement is/was going to be.

If the GOP and Trump kill the ACA and have no replacement, the insurance companies are left with what? The hospitals, rest homes, clinics…what do they do? How can any of them figure out budgets and charges? How do they plan for the future?

That would be a complete disaster and Mitch and many GOPers know it. Rand Paul and Ben Sasse are politicking.

The media is running with the Repeal now Replace Later because they love the drama. They never ever talk about the ramifications of anything, they work the warring factions and drum up the reality show aspects of it all.

Either Mitch patches together something he can get through the Senate, which right now seems iffy at best, or the ACA stands and there are calls for a bipartisan fix for the ACA. Seems to be more leaning that way.

One-sixth to one-fifth of the economy fucked up can crash the whole economy if not done right.

By the way, has anyone heard any mainstream TV media ever talk about what the medical industry or insurance industry thinks of all of this, the ramifications, what they would like to see?

All I see are quick flashes of logos of industry organizations saying they are not for the House or Senate Bills. No one seems to dig in and ask why and what would they want. You have to read web sites to even get a feel for industry thinking and not many people dig in to that.

How myths are born.

Here is a photo at USHMM’s website:

digitalassets.ushmm.org

Photo album page showing the crematoria and gas chambers in Buchenwald.
Original caption reads: “Buchenwald was the home of Ilsa Koch, wife of the Commandant. She was known as the “bitch of Buchenwald”, an insult to every dog who ever lived. She had her inmates tatooed in various designs, then had them killed, then skinned and their hides tanned to make book bindings, lamp shades, and other articles. I saw these things! One story has it that she enjoyed sexual intercourse with her victims- this may be apocryphal. These “meat hooks” were used on the bodies of humans! (the creamatorium) Our English speaking guide later proved to be a Belgian renegade prisoner who worked for the Nazis. I believe he was summarily executed some days later.”

Prentice G. Morgan (the father of the donor) was a member of Patton’s Third Army. Morgan participated in the liberation of Buchenwald. He created a small hotograph album consisting of eleven photographs of the liberation and his commentary about what he witnessed in the camp. The photographs depict American military personnel in the camp, camp buildings, summary justice, military personnel viewing anatomical artifacts belonging to Ilse Koch, and the burial of victims.

Problem?

1. The photos depict Dachau, not Buchenwald.

2. They depict the delousing gas chambers, not homicidal ones.

3. The hooks were used for disinfected clothes, not for humans.

(Not to mention the parroting of the usual myths about Ilse Koch.)

“I saw these things!” Pfft.

I think it is because any messing with the ACA legislation has to be budget neutral and scored by the CBO. To get past that it would need a full vote basically creating new legislation. It’s part of the Senate parliamentary process.

I hate Hewitt but that had to hurt for him to say that on Meet The Chuck. He also said now that the Flynn connection is coming clearer Trump can not fire Mueller or do anything that impedes the investigations or it will get really bad for Trump.

Hmmm. That probably means Mueller will be fired next week. Trump never does what he should do and he never takes advice from lesser people.

Trump didn’t show off his gun in South Carolina when exhibiting his enthusiasm for creatively eliminating enemies. re: #97 re: #60 Kragar

re: #59 Targetpractice

re: #60 Kragar

Probably the main stumbling block in the way of doing anything serious about the healthcare issue in this country (or its coverage in the media, anyway) is just this attitude: that the whole thing is a “political” game, that it’s a matter of which “team” “wins” or “loses”; that vote counts and backstairs parliamentary shenanigans are the main “story”, and that the literally life-and-death issues* involved in the healthcare/insurance debate are just so much background noise. Or issues that won’t really affect people all that much.
I think much of the obsession Republicans have with the “repeal” part of the process is a grinding resentment that President Obama forced the country to confront the realities of healthcare/healthcare insurance costs, and how we (as a country) have to deal with them: rather than simply punting and letting the issue be 1) dismissable as a “political football” and 2) handled completely by the “free market” (i.e. the GOP’s health-industry donor base).

*not helped by the media’s insistence on bolstering the repealheads’ take that “life or death” rhetoric is just so much overheated scare-talk. I mean, we’re talking about health care fercryinoutloud: terms like “life” and “death” aren’t inapt similes….

I think the best thing to do is to take the high road. Democrats and the normal media should do nothing that allows wingnuts, Trump and the GOP to bitch and moan.

Why? It puts all of the bad behavior on the wingnuts and the president and the party that enables it all. It creates contrast between normal and nutty. Let Trump, his administration, the GOP and the conservative media take all the hits. Let them defend and excuse the crazy. They are going to pay for it as more and more people get sick of it and sick of nothing getting done.

Unfortunately, even if there’s a shit ton (and I believe there is) of crap that could take this moron down, the damage being done is rapid, daily and cumulative. We have agencies that have no one or a skeleton crew running them. No supervision of funding for those agencies goes with that. If we thought Republicans left a mess before this fuck up, we are in for a shit show of epic proportions I’m afraid.

I think the best descriptor of the effect of Trump and Trumpism on America is “corrosive”. It reflects how it eats away at the whole fabric of America.

re: #177 Romantic Heretic

Reading the article it sounds like the ‘patriot’ regards firearms as magical. It’s apparent to me he bought a poor quality revolver, didn’t maintain it properly and had not the slightest bit of training in handling it.

But I know you point the barrel at the bad guys, pull the trigger and they fall down dead, as they should. What more do I need to know?

Reminds me of this story from the “Not Always Right” website. Seems like so many ammosexuals think guns work just like they do in the movies…

And corrosion is always hard to stop once it starts. Even after you get the conditions that allow it changed, the process already started continues until neutralized and the damage cut out and replaced.

Yep. Corrosive is a good word. I know it’s not like our form of government isn’t and hasn’t been full of corrupt assholes. The big difference now is that the corruption is combined with a hate, for both government itself and anyone deemed “the enemy”. That along with a complete ignorance about what our government was designed to do is just a fucking trainwreck. How much damage this will cause is going to take decades to uncover and fix.

NJTV is now covering the NJ State Shutdown. And WHYY has an article on it. newsworks.org

I was hoping to watch America’s Test Kitchen. Thankfully it is a re-run.

Both work for me. You deal with both the schoolyard bully and the abusive husband.

The only reason I’m trying to make the distinction is what the normal methods for dealing with these two types:
1. Abusive husband: End the relationship.
2. Schoolyard bully: Face the bully.

Yes, these two aren’t completely distinct, but, we can’t end the relationship right now (I’m not leaving), and Trump doesn’t own the country any more than the schoolyard bully owns the school.

One of the questions the doctor was asked is “Why are all terror attacks caused by Muslims?” We really need to educate people on what terrorism is, and how to recognize it here. It’s not “brown people are attacking.” It’s “using or threatening force to change people’s behavior.”

And this is where the sovcit comes in and says “Yeah, like what the government does.”

Great article. It sure would have made a nice documentary to be seen by more than the people at that meeting and reading the article. Everyone needs to see it, especially Fox News viewers.

I gotcha!

My thought was that one should end the relationship with both even though we can’t (strictly due to the GOP congress, make no mistake about that). And with either, you do have to deal with the situation even if it’s as extreme as leaving first, involving law enforcement, then using the judicial system for codified protection, dissolution of the formal contract etc.

Here we go again with NJ. Christie is supposed to say something.

Maybe he’s off with his family? At the beach…

“I’m talking to the park ranger; he’s a good friend of mine,” Mr. Walker said. “A car pulls up, a BMW. He walks up to it, I hear the girl say, ‘I’m the governor’s daughter.’ He steps back. ‘O.K., go on in.’”

The governor’s office has a residence in Island Beach State Park, and Mr. Christie confirmed that his family was spending the July Fourth holiday there.

Mr. Walker was not pleased.

“I’ll tell you what,” he said, before unleashing a stream of unprintable invective.

I’ve learned a lot about tyranny the past few days. Tyranny is a pair of 2 week old kittens. My life is consumed 24 hours a day by these tiny overlords of cuteness. I watch the clock - is it time for another round of bottle slurping/burping/cuddling/piddles and poops? In between is ensuring clean bedding, mixing formula, finding an hour to run an errand or two (if there’s time), walk the dog, keeping the cockatoo distracted (I catch her looking at the little guys licking her lips, if she had lips). Sleep? Hahaha.

Am i having fun yet? Oh yes. So much.
