Not sushi, but rather coral was the dinner of this starfish:

Did two landings and takoffs at Johnston I. That qualifies me to be a tour guide there.

Now it’s just a tiny spot on the Pacific, of some logistical use. Long, long ago, though, it would have seemed like a large island. The atoll is atop ancient volcanoes, which have been sinking back down for millions of years. The plasticity of the near-molten parts of the crust is such as to give way to the force of the mass above pressing down.

Looks like an aircraft carrier that’s floating just above the surface.

A few meters of sea level rise and it won’t even be that.

That natural scale has been temporarily tripled or quadrupled by the DoD over the years.

The atoll must be ecologically interesting, but the main island is a very funky artifact.

re: #7 Decatur Deb

The surface was just below the mean sea surface level, since the past few millennia. Before that a large area would have been exposed when sea levels were lower.

65 million years ago, when it would have looked more like a volcano, it would have been a large island.

Today’s Okeanos rovers are only about 500m down, working up a ridge. The floor surface in that picture of the starfish would have been above water at one time.

I’m back.

You know you live in a small town when …

I walked out of my house and two sheriff vehicles were parked in the middle of the street in front of my house (the sheriff and the deputy). Sheriff met me with his usual greeting “I’m keeping my eye on you.” (Goes all the way back to when I moved here.)

When I got to the store, I asked what was up - the proprietor said, “Well, so and so got out of jail today, and they’re watching because if he does like he did last time he was in jail, they’ll take him back tonight. Lock your house.” (The guy in question is a petty thief with a long record. Since everyone knows everyone else here, petty thievery is probably not the best profession to be in.)

Anymouse 🌹  Jul 15, 2017 • 4:45:36pm

Well, I’ll copy my comment on Birth Control Works’s new article in the right hand column about millenials not being the first generation to put up with bashing by their elders - it is an article about Geoffrey Chaucer bashing on the youth of his day (as well as successive generations).

littlegreenfootballs.com

re: #1 Anymouse 🌹

Socrates told Chaucer to get off his lawn.

The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers.

(attributed to Socrates by Plato)

“…According to The Sun on Sunday, in a transcript of a conversation between the two leaders, Mr Trump told the Prime Minister: “I haven’t had great coverage out there lately, Theresa.”

She replied: “Well, you know what the British press are like.”

He said: “I still want to come, but I’m in no rush. So, if you can fix it for me, it would make things a lot easier.

“When I know I’m going to get a better reception, I’ll come and not before.”

But it’s also obvious that tr*mp’s word means nothing, so it’s difficult to see how a useful conversation between tr*mp and a foreign leader can go anywhere. Soon enough tr*mp will be back in his normal cesspit absorbing poison from all the usual sources, and any promises made to Macron will be conveniently forgotten.

Yeah, it does Western Europe, no good for the words of the American President to mean nothing. If he took a position, and stuck with it, at least governments could make plans to at least mitigate them.

The path to prison for Kushner is a whole lot clearer than that for Manafort at the moment.

Kushner’s path starts with the multiple SF-86s that omit meetings. More than 100 in the first instance, and at least one in the second - the very meeting that Kushner, Jr., and Manafort attended on 6/9/16.

Kushner and Manafort, joined by Jr., then sought out info from foreign sources that was of value so as to manipulate the outcome of the election. That’s not likely to be the end of this mess though.

Because where there was one meeting, there was likely to be others - particularly when everyone associated with Trump were lying about their contacts with Russians (and other foreigners).

More on the WWC voter problem for Democrats, with a good solution. Focus on Justice, not Order. By Nancy LeTourneau

“While Democrats should certainly look for ways to connect with white Obama-Trump voters, they have to do so with the kind of message that King articulated from the Birmingham jail.

I cannot sit idly by in Atlanta and not be concerned about what happens in Birmingham. Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.

“I can think of no better distillation of the Democratic message.”

Life in rural America continues to be slow …

Got the skinny on why the sheriff was here. The fellow who was let out of jail yesterday was seen in the company of his father. His father is wanted in Texas on an arrest warrant. The sheriff and deputy were sitting in front of my house so they could view the whole street (as they are believed to be holed up in the son’s home down the block from me).

Since the sheriff and deputy left, they either got them both or got tired of sitting in my town. Biggest crime wave we’ve had here in decades.

And the house on the opposite corner of my block just went up for sale, if some blue voters want to move here and help continue to flip this area blue …

The Hispanic family that lives three doors down from me are throwing a massive party in the park (there are more people in the park than residents of my town). It started early this morning and shows no sign of stopping. (They have a permit that expires at midnight.) A number of the children playing across the street giggled at my car as I drove past the park to the wells to shut off the chlorinators (we passed our coliform test - the water tower project is now complete).

Spent the day in my grandparents hometown. Everyone I talked to was really nice and friendly. It’s a place that’s seen better days. I got a little emotional in the Ethnic Discovery museum because I got an idea of what life must have been like for an Eastern European immigrant like my mother’s grandparents in a strange, new land. Their life wasn’t easy but they did what they did their children, grandchildren, and now we their great grandchildren could live better lives. I also learned a touching thing about my great grandmother and how she refused to institutionalize my great aunt and instead raised her with my grandfather’s siblings and then my grandfather himself when he arrived a year later.

I learned through my family research that my grandfather and his first wife had adopted a baby girl in 1895. She was listed in the 1900 census record, along with their son and a boarder. I’m not sure my father even knew of her, since he was from the second marriage and the girl died while my dad was still in high school. But she did marry and have kids, and her granddaughter contacted me several years ago. We were able to piece together the girl’s history.

She was born in Canada. My grandpa and wife #1 were living in Montreal in the 1890s. The girl was probably illegitimate, and from her facial features in photos of her teenage years could have been First Nations descent. Her surname before adoption was the same as a doctor who was boarding with my grandfather in 1900. So, we suspect either the doctor was her natural father, or perhaps he had delivered the baby and found it a good home.

Anyway, my grandfather apparently doted on the girl, took her fishing when she was old enough, and made sure she and her adoptive mother were comfortable after the divorce. Once I understood all this, I was able with her granddaughters help to identify her in photos my grandpa had kept.

That’s wonderful. But yeah, apparently when my great grandparents died, the siblings all agreed to help take care of my great aunt. She lived a happy life. That’s wonderful. But yeah, apparently when my great grandparents died, the siblings all agreed to help take care of my great aunt. She lived a happy life. Wish I could have known her since my mom and her cousin(who I met today) both remembered as so kind and happy. Your grandfather sounds like he was a great man.

He was, and I wish I could have met him. His second marriage was a May-September thing, and my parents married at 38, so I was born almost a full century after grandpa wheat-dogg was born.

He never went to college, but he was a voracious reader and would hit up the used book stores in Manhattan on his way to and from work. Also painted watercolors and oils, and was pretty good with pencil sketches. Fortunately, we still have many of them, which I scanned for posterity years ago.

I’m probably related distantly to many of you. In my searches I found that my great-great grandfather married a daughter of a man who had 28 children with two wives. It’s not as bad as it sounds. He adopted several children of his second wife, but he was the father of my great-great grandfather’s wife. My father’s line ancestor arrived about 1633 and owned land in what is now Harvard University, but he left to go with Thomas Hooker to establish what would become New Haven, CT.

But the interesting point for me is that tracing a few of these marriages shows that I am related through DNA in the USA—ever so slightly in most cases—to thousands and thousands of people.

All it takes is one. A lot is made of the fact that all the Presidents for the most part are are 10th cousins or so of each other but when you think about, it’s really not that amazing. Consider how many first cousins you have and then do a multiplier of ten and you’ll see people have many tenth cousins. Don’t know if we’re related though. I don’t have a lot of Colonial American stock. I did discovery one really really really distant aunt who came here though before the Revolution though.

I did discover that one of my Irish ancestors may have been a mixed marriage- Catholic and Protestant. Pretty rebellious for famine era Ireland. I had not heard of her, but Maryam Mirzakhani died of breast cancer. It looks like we lost a great mathematician:

Maryam Mirzakhani, an Iranian-born mathematician who in 2014 became the first woman awarded the Fields Medal, often called the most prestigious prize in mathematics, died July 15. She was 40.

Her work was deeply theoretical, but other mathematicians considered it boldly original and of untold future importance. Her doctoral dissertation, which she completed in 2004, solved two long-standing mathematical problems and led to publications in three major mathematics journals.

Dr. Mirzakhani was particularly interested in the “geometric and dynamic complexities of curved surfaces,” Stanford said in a statement. These surfaces included spheres, amoebas and complex hyperbolic structures, or saddle-shaped or doughnut-shaped abstract objects with multiple openings. She also studied the dynamics of how particles move or flow across surfaces — like the trajectory of billiard balls rolling on tables of different configurations.

Edit: And I love the story of why she got interested in math. Her brother taught her the Gauss trick for adding numbers from 1 to 100. It’s one of the things I teach my kids.

nytimes.com

The New York Times has an article about the former Soviet spy that was at Jared Kushner’s meeting in June 2016.

It starts:

Rinat Akhmetshin, the Russian-American lobbyist who met with Donald Trump Jr. at Trump Tower in June 2016, had one consistent message for the journalists who met him over the years at the luxury hotels where he stayed in Moscow, London and Paris, or at his home on a leafy street in Washington: Never use email to convey information that needed to be kept secret.

While not, he insisted, an expert in the technical aspects of hacking nor, a spy, Mr. Akhmetshin talked openly about how he had worked with a counterintelligence unit while serving with the Red Army after its 1979 invasion of Afghanistan and how easy it was to find tech-savvy professionals ready and able to plunder just about any email account.

A journalist who visited his home was given a thumb drive containing emails that had apparently been stolen by hackers working for one of his clients.

On another occasion, at a meeting with a New York Times reporter at the Ararat Park Hyatt hotel in Moscow, Mr. Akhmetshin, by then an American citizen, informed the journalist he had recently been reading one of his emails: a note sent by the reporter to a Russian-American defense lawyer who had once worked for Mikhail Khodorkovsky, the anti-Kremlin oligarch.

As a rule, the check-in counters close 30 minutes before a domestic flight and 45 before an international one. If you already have a boarding pass and no checked bag, you can go directly to the gate, where they usually close the doors about 10-15 minutes before scheduled departure time. If someone is already there on standby, and you are not there, the standby gets your seat.

All the right sees is “Trump is under investigation.” And in their minds, they were going to investigate Hillary over frivolous shit so Democrats are doing the same thing to Trump. A nasty piece of work to be sure but probably not as bad as the odious character who was hanged the next day. en.m.wikipedia.org
Theodore Schurch was a British soldier who was captured at Tobruk in1942. He went over to the Axis and specialized in infiltrating PoW camps under assumed identities so he could inform on escape attempts, resistance contacts, smuggling and the like. SAS founder David Stirling was one of those he betrayed.

I’ve got Zipporah Bolles , whose claim to fame was being murdered in 1678 along with 2 of her children by a teenage neighbor, after the Native American couple that worked for the family was initially blamed.

My documented one is Mike Strank. We’re pretty sure his grandfather and my grandmother’s grandmother were siblings.

Tonight on my walk I was listening to my BBC Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo podcast on film. Mark relayed his experience in the late 1980s trying to fly from Kiev to Moscow. At first he was denied transit until a helpful soul said “he (the ticket agent) needs a payoff.” So Mark paid an extra $5 or so. The tickets he received were blank for seat and destination. It was a piece of paper saying he’d purchased the right to compete for a seat. And in fact, he said the airline basically said, “seats are now available” and everyone ran like homesteaders.

Maybe Delta or United should try that.

In the meantime, the woman who was photographed by Ann Coulter (she does seem a bit of an olive shade, so probably less than a person to Ms. Coulter) is probably going to be harassed by Ms. Coulter’s flying monkey brigade.

(It would be suitable justice if that does happen that the woman sues Coulter for harassment.)

Oh man, that reminds me of the good old days on Southwest, when you got your plastic seat boarding order card at the airport. You went early, so you could get a better seat. Nowadays, what with all the security, you still get a seat boarding order card, but it’s linked up to your ticket, and you can get it a day in advance. But in harking back to those Russian ticket days, you can pay more to get your seat boarding order card earlier.

It is shocking to me that despite protests and angry town halls, the GOP is a few votes away from repealing the ACA and thus taking away healthcare access from millions. They need to listen to their constituents.
