The atoll must be ecologically interesting, but the main island is a very funky artifact.

The surface was just below the mean sea surface level, since the past few millennia. Before that a large area would have been exposed when sea levels were lower.

65 million years ago, when it would have looked more like a volcano, it would have been a large island.

Today’s Okeanos rovers are only about 500m down, working up a ridge. The floor surface in that picture of the starfish would have been above water at one time.

You know you live in a small town when …

I walked out of my house and two sheriff vehicles were parked in the middle of the street in front of my house (the sheriff and the deputy). Sheriff met me with his usual greeting “I’m keeping my eye on you.” (Goes all the way back to when I moved here.)

When I got to the store, I asked what was up - the proprietor said, “Well, so and so got out of jail today, and they’re watching because if he does like he did last time he was in jail, they’ll take him back tonight. Lock your house.” (The guy in question is a petty thief with a long record. Since everyone knows everyone else here, petty thievery is probably not the best profession to be in.)

The path to prison for Kushner is a whole lot clearer than that for Manafort at the moment.

Kushner’s path starts with the multiple SF-86s that omit meetings. More than 100 in the first instance, and at least one in the second - the very meeting that Kushner, Jr., and Manafort attended on 6/9/16.

Kushner and Manafort, joined by Jr., then sought out info from foreign sources that was of value so as to manipulate the outcome of the election. That’s not likely to be the end of this mess though.

Because where there was one meeting, there was likely to be others - particularly when everyone associated with Trump were lying about their contacts with Russians (and other foreigners).

Got the skinny on why the sheriff was here. The fellow who was let out of jail yesterday was seen in the company of his father. His father is wanted in Texas on an arrest warrant. The sheriff and deputy were sitting in front of my house so they could view the whole street (as they are believed to be holed up in the son’s home down the block from me).

Since the sheriff and deputy left, they either got them both or got tired of sitting in my town. Biggest crime wave we’ve had here in decades.

And the house on the opposite corner of my block just went up for sale, if some blue voters want to move here and help continue to flip this area blue …

The Hispanic family that lives three doors down from me are throwing a massive party in the park (there are more people in the park than residents of my town). It started early this morning and shows no sign of stopping. (They have a permit that expires at midnight.) A number of the children playing across the street giggled at my car as I drove past the park to the wells to shut off the chlorinators (we passed our coliform test - the water tower project is now complete).

Spent the day in my grandparents hometown. Everyone I talked to was really nice and friendly. It’s a place that’s seen better days. I got a little emotional in the Ethnic Discovery museum because I got an idea of what life must have been like for an Eastern European immigrant like my mother’s grandparents in a strange, new land. Their life wasn’t easy but they did what they did their children, grandchildren, and now we their great grandchildren could live better lives. I also learned a touching thing about my great grandmother and how she refused to institutionalize my great aunt and instead raised her with my grandfather’s siblings and then my grandfather himself when he arrived a year later.

Her surname before adoption was the same as a doctor who was boarding with my grandfather in 1900. So, we suspect either the doctor was her natural father, or perhaps he had delivered the baby and found it a good home.

Anyway, my grandfather apparently doted on the girl, took her fishing when she was old enough, and made sure she and her adoptive mother were comfortable after the divorce. Once I understood all this, I was able with her granddaughters help to identify her in photos my grandpa had kept.

All it takes is one. A lot is made of the fact that all the Presidents for the most part are are 10th cousins or so of each other but when you think about, it’s really not that amazing. Consider how many first cousins you have and then do a multiplier of ten and you’ll see people have many tenth cousins. Don’t know if we’re related though. I don’t have a lot of Colonial American stock. I did discovery one really really really distant aunt who came here though before the Revolution though.

I did discover that one of my Irish ancestors may have been a mixed marriage- Catholic and Protestant. Pretty rebellious for famine era Ireland. Don’t know for sure of course but a researcher I talked to in County Fermanagh told me that the wife’s maiden name defintiely sounded more “Church of Ireland” to her since it was considerably more Anglo and not Norman-Irish either like for example Fitzgerald.

All the right sees is “Trump is under investigation.” And in their minds, they were going to investigate Hillary over frivolous shit so Democrats are doing the same thing to Trump. Except for the fact that Democrats aren’t in charge of anything so they aren’t doing it to Trump. That’s all he’s seeing, “investigations.”

It was a piece of paper saying he’d purchased the right to compete for a seat. And in fact, he said the airline basically said, “seats are now available” and everyone ran like homesteaders.

Maybe Delta or United should try that.

It is shocking to me that despite protests and angry town halls, the GOP is a few votes away from repealing the ACA and thus taking away healthcare access from millions. They need to listen to their constituents.
