Funny. My Telecaster is crying and saying “why can’t you do that?”
Sometimes I watch guitarists and am motivated to go work harder to improve my playing. Other times I watch guitarists and simply despair, knowing that never in a million years of practicing could I do that.
But I mainly play as stress relief. I’ve found that playing requires enough concentration to push all my annoyances into the background. Needless to say, the guitar collection has been getting a real workout in the last 7 months.

Seriously, it’s ridiculous. This whole idea that if we get rid of the statues, we’re ignoring history. Ignoring history is to do what our jackass President did and equate Lee to Washington. Every last state in the Union sent volunteers to defend the Union in 1861. Walsh should know better being from the land of Lincoln but he’s a bigoted old bastard.

re: #26 HappyWarrior
I get it. As a certified teacher of social studies I get it big time. Our current presidetriment-to-society is a joke. Joe Walsh is a joke as well. Both of them are idiots and do not realize that there is history to be learned and statues are a remnant and show great things or bad things that a country does. You dont need the statues. We know about history from first and second hand accounts and oral history, not fucking statues.
I have heard trump supporters say the past is the past and it should stay there as we can’t learn anything from it. I told one that the last few times we had a business man in the oval office, the country was massively screwed over with great recessions. Shut down to leave it in the past.
Also, I live near the akwasasne Mohawk reservation. Some one mentioned imminent domain may happen sometime (for what I have no idea). My friend freaking blew up and stated that that was a terrible idea and that it will never happen. History has no statues to show that the reservation lost a lot of land due to imminent domain and that many of the akwasasne know the past and what that entails. No statues or books commemorating that bit of history.
Also come on…those statues were for Jim crow. Joe Walsh and presidetriment are just fucking racists.

Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. I understand there are a good many Southerners in the room tonight. I know the South very well. I spent twenty years there one night.
Last time I was down South I walked into this restaurant and this white waitress came up to me and said, “We don’t serve colored people here.” I said, “That’s all right. I don’t eat colored people. Bring me a whole fried chicken.”
Then these three white boys came up to me and said, “Boy, we’re giving you fair warning. Anything you do to that chicken, we’re gonna do to you.” So I put down my knife and fork, I picked up that chicken and I kissed it. Then I said, “Line up, boys!”

The WaPo article about it is delicious. (Fahrenthold, of course.)
Trump’s club had lost nine of the 16 galas or dinner events that it had been scheduled to host during next winter’s social “season” in Palm Beach. At least three other groups have also canceled charity luncheons there this week…
Lois Pope, a Mar-a-Lago member and philanthropist who heads the Lois Pope Life Foundation and Leaders In Furthering Education, said she had told her foundation’s board to move its well-known December gala from the club…
Big Dog Ranch Rescue said Friday it would no longer hold an upcoming event at the club and would instead move it to the group’s facility nearby. Trump’s daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, was scheduled to co-chair the event.
And much more…
Just got back from the rally here in Dallas. It was pretty peaceful here, but since I’m too brain-dead to form my thoughts, I’ll just repost my friend’s post which is pretty much in line with what I witnessed:
Quick update on my rally experience tonight….
I went there to capture photos, so I left my personal opinions on all topics to myself. The large rally at City Hall Plaza was peaceful from what I saw. The vast majority of people came to that event, listened to the speakers, and went home.
But I didn’t stay around that area long as I wanted to see more action up close, so I walked to Pioneer Cemetery where one of the Confederate statues was under guard by Texas State Troopers. For most of the evening, a few dozen people were gathered here, often having debates. Mostly peaceful. Sometimes heated.
However, once the main rally ended, a group that I’d classify as troublemakers (maybe Antifa, or just kids looking to make a scene) descended upon this area. Most had their faces covered, which was “prohibited” at the main rally. They came with megaphones and chants and hot tempers. There were scuffles.
I was right next to one of these fights and was hit in the face with a full water bottle. No big deal, but fuck these people for coming to these things just to start shit. Mind you, it was only a few dozen from the crowd of 2,000+, but still. I heard a taser go off at one point. Some people were dragged behind the police barricade. People were throwing shit at the cops and chanting bullshit. This group definitely didn’t represent what the
rally was about. But, I stayed around… because photos.I’m home now and will begin the post-processing. Whew.
PS: Props to Dallas Police, as always, for being a peaceful force in the midst of nonsense. And to all the assisting agencies as well. The City had dumptrucks blocking roads and DART buses blocking the plaza. Lots of barricades. Lots of public safety presence. A+
On another note, I was upset at seeing discarded water bottles at the cemetery so I stayed and picked up as many as I could before I left. I’m not a fat of littering trash at a cemetery, so have some respect for the dead.

STATES RIGHTS! TARIFFS!
re: #142 teleskiguy
STATES RIGHTS! TARIFFS!
And yet every state secession document, the CSA Constitution, and CSA VP Alexander Stephens’s “Cornerstone Speech” all explicitly claim slavery (and its Biblical blessing) as the reason for their secession.
Funny thing, they don’t mention things like “states’ rights” or “tariffs.” They do mention slaves were an incredibly valuable commodity worth fighting for.
The traitorous rebels were quite clear the war was about slavery, but today? You can’t explain it; might be slavery, might be something else.

The Eclipse Conspiracy
The scientists are all talking like it’s a sure thing.
On August 21, the “moon” will pass between the Earth and the sun, obscuring the light of the latter. The government agency NASA says this will result in “one of nature’s most awe-inspiring sights.” The astronomers there claim to have calculated down to the minute exactly when and where this will happen, and for how long. They have reportedly known about this eclipse for years, just by virtue of some sort of complex math.
This seems extremely unlikely. I can’t even find these eclipse calculations on their website to check them for myself.

Last night I mentioned the fire here NW of Brookings, Oregon in the Kalmiopsis Wilderness (Federal lands) and thought I would post an update. The fire has jumped Long Ridge, just north of the junction of the South Bank Chetco/Chetco Rivers, and is within one mile of private land. It was a very orange day here in Brookings, with ash raining pretty much all day. At one point we were getting rained on with leaves and thin chunks of bark that were scorched black but not burned. Today the winds were coming at our town from the N/NW, pushing the smoke out over the ocean just north of us and sweeping it down the coast into California. The air was smoky and with the number of elderly here, I know people were miserable. The winds weren’t helping anything today being they were hitting upwards of 20 MPH (about 5-15 MPH average all day.
Local stores with large parking lots are letting evacuees with trailers set up camp in their lots. The local high school is filling up as well and the Red Cross is on hand to assist. The evac zone has expanded south and westward a few miles but with the weather predicted for tomorrow, it will probably expand some more. Tomorrow may see it crossing over into private lands and there are a lot of people who live up in those hills. We have friends all over up there and they are scared of losing everything. Many of them can now see the fire and they are in a panic.
The smoke sucks tonight but hoping for a bad weather forecast where we get a strong onshore flow tomorrow. :)
A person can hope!

Craven, self-serving political calculations designed to protect their careers, and dwindling hope that the president, despite everything, will help them move their long-delayed legislative agenda.
Their silence is shameful.

Dick Gregory, 84, Dies; Found Humor in the Civil Rights Struggle
Dick Gregory, the pioneering black satirist who transformed cool humor into a barbed force for civil rights in the 1960s, then veered from his craft for a life devoted to protest and fasting in the name of assorted social causes, health regimens and conspiracy theories, died Saturday in Washington. He was 84.
Mr. Gregory’s son, Christian Gregory, who announced his death on social media, said more details would be released in the coming days. Mr. Gregory had been admitted to a hospital on Aug. 12, his son said in an earlier Facebook post.
Early in his career Mr. Gregory insisted in interviews that his first order of business onstage was to get laughs, not to change how white America treated Negroes (the accepted word for African-Americans at the time). “Humor can no more find the solution to race problems than it can cure cancer,” he said. Nonetheless, as the civil rights movement was kicking into high gear, whites who caught his club act or listened to his routines on records came away with a deeper feel for the nation’s shameful racial history.

… but her emails
Well, in the LA Times defense, they did endorse her for the presidency. It’s the other “serious” pundits and editorialists who wasted an ocean of ink about her emails, about her Foundation, about worry over FBI investigations, and (most importantly) how she was calling all those “fine people” who supported Trump “deplorables,” who deserve to be caned in the public square.
Here is the Chicago Tribune’s Obit on Dick Gregory.
Gregory’s list of conspiracy theories is a long one, including such items as federal agents actually shot Malcolm X and John F. Kennedy; the federal government blew up the levees in New Orleans; the D.C.-area sniper attacks were perpetrated by a White man in a white van, not by the two convicted Black simpletons; and Ron Brown, President Clinton’s Commerce secretary, was killed by a bullet to the head, not in a plane crash as reported. Ghetto intelligence, he says, tells him nobody ever landed on the moon: “Those images of dust rising and falling again when that astronaut steps on the planet could not be accurate because there’s no gravity on the moon, and how could there be all those pictures with shadows when the moon is completely dark?
The 9/11 ruse
But perhaps the biggest ruse, says Gregory, is the government’s attempt to cover up what really happened on 9/11.
“You have to ask yourself some simple questions, like how is it that Morgan Bush, the president’s younger brother, owned the company that was in charge of security for the World Trade Center, yet it has never appeared in The New York Times?” The Times and most other major U.S. papers have CIA agents working as reporters, he says.
“Out of the 19 hijackers, 11 were taken off plane a half-hour beforehand and let back on the plane….
“How did we know the terrorists were Arabs … they didn’t find no black boxes,” he continues. “The government said they tracked their cell phone calls. If I called you on your cell from my house, that call doesn’t go from me to you. It goes from a connector then down to you. There is no connector up there, which is why you have to use one of those $7-a-minute phones.”
“If you look at the large white cloud that resulted from the collapse of the Twin Towers, you’ll notice that people’s faces are covered in white powder, which some have said is asbestos. Asbestos has been outlawed for many years. They used dynamite to blow those buildings up, which turned that concrete into dust like a woman’s face powder…. Then they took all the debris and shipped it to China so you couldn’t examine it.
“Something is not right, but there are too many scientists involved now, and too many of them are asking serious questions. Little by little the truth is getting out. There is a limit on how much information you can keep bottled up.”
Gregory says there are many, many more inconsistencies, but some people will never be convinced that the government was involved.
Wait what.
So Joy just showed a tweet of yours, Charles. While talking about Chuckie. And she called him Charles Johnson. Hope that doesn’t confuse anyone.

Virtually ALL of the MSM (print) endorsed Hillary (I’ve lost the figures but it was something like 100+ to 1) - it didn’t stop them reporting all of the issues you mention.
Edit: Most of the endorsements seemed to imply “the lessor of 2 evils” although I admit I can’t remember the wording from the LA times).

The Trump admin is a roving shitshow of epic proportions, and it goes far beyond the protection of Confederate statues in the most unlikely of places. It’s an admin rife with white supremacists and bigots.
It’s an admin wholly unprepared to govern, let alone do any policy that wasn’t first crafted in the fever swamps of infowars, white supremacist/Nazi chat rooms, or the boardrooms of billionaires looking to gut govt so that they could get bigger tax cuts.
Even with all the crap this admin is doing, the GOP still thinks that they’ve got political space to do their massive tax cuts.

The odds are so slim on tax reform being passed that even Goldman Sachs says they don’t see it happening. Whatever political capital Trump had left after the disaster that was Trumpcare was torched this week. There’s already predictions that there will be a government shutdown next month because the “Freedom Caucus” will be so emboldened by Trump’s remarks Tuesday and Bannon’s threats to go after “the establishment” that they will demand the craziest shit they can in the debt ceiling bill because they know Trump will have their back. And even if they avoid a shutdown, the odds they’ll come together to craft a budget just so they can use reconciliation to cram through tax reform are laughably small.
Tax reform is not going to be the GOP’s salvation. Only a come to Jesus moment and the wholesale disassociation from Trump will save them and only if they do it soon.

She is 100% veneer. It is very difficult seeing the human…all you see is “the look” she needs to put on.
But in a way, I don’t blame her totally. She grew up with a very strange father. Obviously Daddy Trump pushed “the look” as being everything. And we have all seen the photos of how he treated her. She may have been raised to be all about the surface. Depth doesn’t seem to be a trait in the house. She could be extremely intelligent but hides it to be what Big Orange Daddy wants. An image…for Daddy.
Amazing that the right is still ranting about communists. They need all the enemies they can muster.

Where would she even learn what is normal? Who is there to set an example to her of what is moral and righteous? She didn’t learn that from her father growing up, and she sure didn’t learn it from her criminal in-laws.

There will be no GOP salvation. They sucked before Trump, made it far worse, and would expect forgiveness and a return to the post Bush status quo? Oh hell no. This is a political fight to the death. The GOP must be ended. Dunno what comes to fill the second party void but pre Trump GOP ain’t it.
In some of the neighborhoods around here where speeding is a common concern residents are putting up signs saying “Drive Like Your Kids Live Here.” On my drive this morning I saw that someone had taken the trouble in one neighborhood to spray paint out “Live Here.” Had to chuckle.

Self awareness can be a big problem with some folks. Especially in a home dominated by a strong presence. You may want to change, but find it impossible under the circumstances and with the money involved.
Ultimately you are correct. Getting there may only come after that strong presence is gone. Maybe the money too.

I shamelessly lifted this comment from political wire and can’t correctly give credit
The existential problem facing the United States of America is that two-out-of-five of our fellow citizens firmly believe it is a good thing to have Donald Trump in the Oval Office.
Donald Trump is not really the problem. His enablers are.
Your neighbors and coworkers and some of your kids’ teachers and the guy in the car passing you on the freeway are the problem. Just for a week, ignore Trump and focus on how we either convert or politically neutralize them. Otherwise, we all lose.

I agree with the sentiment. First take away their infrastructure-The Republican Party. I have no idea what to actually do to convert or moderate those that willingly embrace personal animus and white privilege resentments as government policy. Nor those that embrace the cultures that went with slavery and genocide in a try at world domination. Hopefully two out of five are not that far gone as to not see the benefits of a kinder society.

Ryan and McConnell pander to the freedom caucus and tea baggers when they find it useful, but their true masters are the business wing. They’ll bring a clean debt ceiling bill to the floor, Democrats will help them pass it, and it will be entirely in Trump’s hands whether or not to trash the full faith and credit of the United States.

An image…for Daddy.
She’s entitled and ignorant. She’s s pretty girl so that’s all that matters. An unfortunate parallel even if you’re not born with a platinum spoon in your maw. Pretty alone gets a lot of people through life.
Who could have predicted the President’s latest outrage? Barack Obama and anyone, really.
The most important resistance to Trump has to come from civil society, from institutions, and from individuals who, despite their differences, believe in constitutional norms and have a fundamental respect for the values of honesty, equality, and justice. The imperative is to find ways to counteract and diminish his malignant influence not only in the overtly political realm but also in the social and cultural one.

To continue with my thought from earlier, to make tax reform happen, the GOP leadership basically has to hit a set of goals without any stumbling:
- Have to pass a debt ceiling increase without a shutdown, which they might do but only if they agree to passing a clean bill with Dem support
- Pass a budget or a barebones “guidelines” bill like they did in January in order to utilize reconciliation again.
- Craft and pass a tax reform bill that can pass on 50 votes. That assumes they can craft a bill that will win over the “Freedom Caucus” as well as “moderates” without any defections.
And even then, the earliest they might do all this is October or November. This isn’t a bill they have just lying around that they can pass in an afternoon, it’s going to be a months-long effort that will give the “Freedom Caucus” plenty of opportunity to torpedo the whole mess.

So I finally finished watching “Turn: Washington’s Spies”.
It was lovely how the final battle at Yorktown made evident how all the spies’ work coordinated… there was the fake love letter given to a British spy that made Cornwallis think the bulk of rebel troops were heading to NY, the guy who’d seen a British officer dumping gunpowder to make room in his ship for the tobacco he was stealing so the rebels knew the Brits couldn’t have as many landmines as they normally would (enabling a frontal assault that would have otherwise been a bad idea), the printer in NY who sabotaged the British Navy signals manual so the ships misunderstood each other’s orders….
(also, I saw “Hamilton” a few weeks ago — that battle was the only time Washington let Hamilton lead troops into battle. Hamilton had been wanting to for years, but Washington kept saying “no no I need you here coordinating the complicated orders I send out so different states’ forces and the French Navy would all time out right from different directions, etc.” — but for Yorktown he finally gave him a command and Alexander led the battalion that was first over the wall…)

Just like I can’t believe we’re still, STILL fighting over abortion, in twentyfuckingseventeen, I cannot even grasp that we’re seeing a resurgence of Nazis and holocaust denial. And fucking pro Hitler bullshit. Seriously? Fucking Nazis are ok now to some freaking people? That this is even up for discussion is STUNNING to me. What in the hell? Didn’t we have a World War about this shit, not that horribly long ago? Yeah, I know, they never really went away, the motherfuckers, but I wasn’t seeing them on my TV or in the government with alarming regularity. They’re being exposed, which is good, but this is gonna go full ugly before it gets tamped the fuck down.
See, they think they can dress it up in Trump’s preferred golf wear; khaki pants and white polo shirt, or throw a suit on it and somehow that makes it all better. Why, they look just like someone’s son or brother or the neighbor. Yes, yes they do. Which is the point. They need to be scared to spout this shit and they aren’t. Free speech does not at all include the right to go or remain unchallenged. ESPECIALLY IF YOU’RE A PIECE OF SHIT NAZI. I mean, at what point is it enough?

— The Hill (@thehill) August 20, 2017
“… The panel — the Advisory Committee for the Sustained National Climate Assessment — is a 15-member panel made up of academics, corporate employees and local officials charged with simplifying findings from the National Climate Assessment for those inside and outside of the federal government.
The group worked on the National Climate Assessment, the mandated quadrennial report that was leaked last month as a draft. The report is due to be released in 2018, but The New York Times reported that scientists working on it worried the Trump administration would try to bury some or all of its conclusions and may have leaked it for that reason.”

The GOP’s dream for America is totally in line with Russia: oligarchic, authoritarian and theocratic. Only difference is that it would be fundamentalist Protestant theocracy instead a Russian Orthodox one.

Do you harass every nun you see walking out a convent because they cover their heads too? Idiot.
Germany has been having an ongoing discussion about headscarves in public, and someone pointed out that for all the shouting back and forth, almost nobody is stopping and asking the Muslim women themselves why they wear their headscarves and what it means to them and their role in family, community and society.

So that 10 new racists could come in his place?
I deleted it - it’s an old article from May.
re: #341 William Lewis
One other bit of religion I’m going to toss out there today. The gospel lesson today was from Matthew 15 and first talks about how that what goes into you can not defile you, it’s what comes out. What you eat, whether or not you wash your hands appropriately, etc, is not what makes a person bad - rather it’s what a person says for what comes out of the mouth comes from the heart - that is evil intentions, adultery, theft, false witness, slander, and so on.
Then it goes on to the story of the Canaanite woman. Her daughter is ill (“tormented by a demon”) and she begs Jesus to heal her. He says, basically in a very bigoted manner - go away dog, I’m only here to help my people. Her response? I may be a dog & my daughter may be a dog but even dogs can eat the scraps that fall from her master’s table. This is an equal verbal slap to Jesus face and He is shocked out of his complacency, his eyes that were clouded by prejudice, his heart, cold because she wasn’t one of those he understood to be his mission area, opened to her need. Jesus is transformed by her words and her need and he heals her daughter.
Such an appropriate image given recent weeks & especially Charlottesville. Our healing can only begin when we understand it. Unfortunately those who need to heal the most are the least likely to pay attention even while shouting out how “devout” in their Christianity they are.
I usually agree with the ADL but they’re badly mistaken on this. There’s absolutely no doubt this hand signal has become a white power sign.
