Lyrics:

On certain nights
the ringing in my ears
louder than the rustle of leaves

along the path
but who am I to scare
and who are you to follow out here?

deep in the mile I will walk for you
deep in the lines of our summer
I see the clouds and they seem so young
what wicked mind did set their trails
were they the ones that got away?

the longest train
that I ever saw
but what is in a ticket to move?

could beauty lie
in my place of fear
run and the horizon will too

deep in the mile I will walk for you
deep in the lines of our summer
I see the clouds and they seem so young
what wicked mind did set their trail
were they the ones that got away?

you might as well be on my shoulders, I suppose
I can pretend I do not see you, and so it goes
we can talk about just where the clouds are from

So how long before the White House drops the act and starts attacking the Heyer family? I’m guessing less than a week.

Exactly.

Had that asshole ran over a black or Muslim woman in the rally, would there be just as much outrage?

Doubt it.

Because most whites are sanitary racists. They’re ok with it as long as it doesn’t get on them (in other words, as long as they don’t have to think about it).

I’m surprised it hasn’t happened already. I am expecting Cheeto Pendejo to go after Susan Bro the same way that he attacked the Khans.

Perhaps he’ll just sit back and let Bannon do the heavy lifting for him. After all, whatever Breitbart publishes will eventually end up on Fox News and then in the minds of his “base.”

Oh, they still want tough on drugs…just on the drugs that “those people” are using. Like how cocaine use in the 70s and 80s was an open secret among white people, but the moment the “crack epidemic” started, we had to start the “war on drugs.”

This is gonna cause a few of the “serious” pundits to choke on their lattes:

The argument for months now is the GOP doesn’t have to sweat Trump’s falling approval ratings because a lot of the seats either they’re defending or contesting are in states he won. That calculus is about to get totally upended.

Trump’s trying to change the subject again. And not in the way his supporters were hoping. They want to hear him promise tax cuts, and here he is rattling the saber some more.

Besides, what happened to North Korea? Wasn’t he gonna do something if they issued any more threats?

Minor correction: Expand/reboot the “war on drugs.” Nixon launched it in 1971, the same year he declared War on Cancer, which cancer of course continues to win. But yes, crack was redefined for maximum black male incarceration.

Can already guess how the address will go: Start with boasting yet again about how “awesome” his win was, move on to blaming Obama for the war that Bush started and then totally fucked up, then promise that he’s got the “best people” working to bring the war to an end, and finish by setting a goal he knows he can’t accomplish and will later insist he never expected to meet.

In contrast to Britain and France, Spain does not have Muslim-majority quarters, fertile ground for religious extremists. The country’s Muslims are well integrated, and many serve in the police and other security forces. And in contrast to other countries that have experienced terror, Spain did not identify the terrorists with the local Muslim community.

Boy, God sure has bad aim then, and is a far poorer predictor of eclipses than astrophysicists.

I imagine all the tourist traps from Oregon to our own Carhenge to his own South Carolina aren’t looking at this as punishment.

The only punishment I see now is having to show ID to get into my town because all the rural roads are closed (and the state governor is staying on a ranch just up the road from here - he hasn’t been seen in town but there is a rumour he’ll be at tonight’s prime rib feed).

I’m back. No ID required … they recognise my rather unusual car, hair, and hat. Waved me through.

I am puzzled about something though. I am certainly no fan of my state governor’s politics, but he is staying on a ranch only a couple miles away for the eclipse (they are having a big party tonight, invitation only).

I would think that a governor would meet with a nearby city council for a photo op or whatnot, and his visit is only the second time a governor has ever come to the Nebraska Panhandle. Photo op only takes a couple minutes, gets him in the paper all around here with a positive article, and right now the whole area is very secure (the whole town is cut off).

I’m not sure why he’s avoiding us (and he has to come through town to leave the area.)

It is very likely that no Confederate butternut uniform was ever made in anything close to that size. Thanks to states rights, Lee’s army was starving by 1864. Each sovereign state jealously guarded its own production for its own troops.
At the same time, Sherman’s men were eating like planter aristocrats on confiscated stores in Georgia. They even found a cache of blue uniforms Georgia had purchased for its militia before the war. These, and a similarly liberated batch of smuggled Enfield rifles, were used to outfit the many unionists and freed PoWs Sherman added to his army during the march.

2 miles into my ride I discover that the road I take to get from San Mateo over to Canada Road has been scraped for repaving - at least a mile of it! Luckily there was little car traffic, because riding on that shit was like riding a jackhammer. You think it’s rough driving on that shit in a car, try riding it on a steel bike with 25mm wide tires and no suspension.

I’m suffering from the Heartbreak of Sore Asses.

Could be worse, you could be in a whole county with no WiFi (except the county seat). No campground here has WiFi, nor any motel outside the county seat.

Yes, Nova Scotia.

The food is pretty amazing. We went to a Japanese-Western Fusion steakhouse the night we got in, and I had a Beef Udon that knocked my socks off. Chinese last night, which was meh, but we were tired. No seafood for me, unfortunately, because the wife is allergic. I had some kickass chili this afternoon (and great local brews with everything!), and we’re hanging out tonight and eating the stuff we bought at the Farmer’s Market yesterday.

Poutine is on the short list. Been to Canada twice and still haven’t tried it yet.

Over at Wonkette, Doktor Zoom weighs in on the wingnut who unfortunately shares a similar name to our esteemed host here:

doktorzoom

Interesting trivia: in a very, very rare event, prizewinning idiot Chuck C. Johnson’s GotNews, in its attempt to disprove Fred Trump was ever at a “KKK rally” in 1927, actually included some useful research and fact-checking.Needless to say, the useful research was done by someone else, not Johnson. Most of the “debunking” is nitpicking small details to prove Fred Trump is utterly untainted, like pointing out that ACTUALLY, the event was a Memorial Day Parade that a thousand Klansmen joined in, leading to a riot, so that makes it NOT a “KKK rally.”

But Johnson’s researcher, “Ren Jander” — apparently brought in from Tatooine — did find one thing that last year’s press reports did apparently get dead wrong: a KKK flyer distributed in Queens complaining of dangerous immigrants and New York’s “Roman Catholic police” was actually distributed the day after the riot, in protest of the arrests of Klansmen, not, as WaPo’s Philip Bump had it, in advance of the parade. So it was a hateful xenophobic hatemongering reaction to the parade, not a hateful xenophobic hatemongering provocation to the parade.

While it’s an interesting — and apparently accurate — correction of the record, that’s little more than a footnote, and has fuck-all to do with Fred Trump’s well-documented racism as a landlord. Every major media discussion of Fred Trump’s arrest dutifully notes that it’s unclear what he was doing at the parade or whether he was a participant in the riot, and notes that he was not prosecuted.

Ryan’s CNN appearance has been in the works for a while. Trump just did this thing a couple days ago.

Second day of the village total eclipse party starts in half an hour at the community centre (with rib-eye steak or prime rib for dinner). Yesterday was the movie in the park, tomorrow is a giant breakfast feed (the town’s population is about three times normal) followed by an eclipse watching party, then a hamburger roast as a fundraiser for the fire brigade.

Hello from smoky Brookings, OR! In the last 24 hours, the Chetco Bar Fire here has grown from 22,000 acres to over 31,000 acres. We just received a county alert to be prepared for a possible evac notice here in Brookings-Harbor, The evac zone has been expanded to cover most of our area but excludes Brookings-Harbor (for the moment). The map that shows the fire area at the first link has not been updated since yesterday but will probably be updated later this evening. The rest of the info is current.

Word is that the evacuation area may have been expanded because of the smoke and ash, which is pretty intense at times but still very tolerable for healthy people (for a bit, anyway!). If that’s the case, I don’t plan on leaving until things get a bit worse. It’s been a dark orange day today but one bright bit was I had a discussion with my Trumphumping neighbor that I have talked about here a while back. Last time we had talked about Trump he had asked that Trump be given a chance for a few months. No problem, I’m not going anywhere…lol! Now that it’s been a few months I used the orange sky as an opening to asking him about how he thought Trump was doing. :)

I’ll relate that story a bit later as my cats are demanding Temptations treats and I need to get some stuff ready in case we have to boogie outta here. It’s tempting to just take the cars down to the beach if the town burns. ;)

George Thomas, The “Rock of Chickamauga” would be another good choice.

en.wikipedia.org
Robert Smalls (April 5, 1839 - February 23, 1915) was an enslaved African American who, during and after the American Civil War, gained freedom and became a ship’s pilot, sea captain, and politician. He freed himself, his crew and their families from slavery on May 13, 1862, by commandeering a Confederate transport ship, CSS Planter, in Charleston harbor, shouting “I’m the captain now!”, and sailing it from Confederate-controlled waters to the U.S. blockade. His example and persuasion helped convince President Lincoln to accept African-American soldiers into the U.S. Army and the U.S. Navy.

SRSLY. How hard would it to simply say: “We don’t have complete information on that situation yet: we will check with Naval officials and issue a statement shortly”? And then have a staffer compose a brief thoughts-and-prayers/praise-for-our-sailors release? Or anything that doesn’t make the POTUS look and sound like a goddamn imbecile?

It depends on the context. All Republicans send are thoughts and prayers, meaning nothing. It’s a way for them to get out of doing anything meaningful.

On an unrelated topic, what’s with all the “save energy during the eclipse” because of a decrease in solar energy on the grid?
I get that actual system operators will be facing a decrease and increase in solar power in a way they haven’t before, and that it will follow a path across the whole country, which means they’ll have to pay attention. What I don’t get is why this is a huge issue. Are there no cloudy days to contend with? No nights?

Am I missing something?

I can only assume its this: Peak energy usage is during the day, by a long shot. Night’s don’t even compare. The eclipse is going to block out the sun in such a way that it’s the same as night. Even during cloudy days there’s a decent amount of light that gets through. A sudden outbreak of night without the nighttime energy usage will put a strain on solar based energy.

I was entirely speculating. The only thing I can say is that while it’s a few minutes, it would be a big issue if your only source was solar, and somewhat of an issue if solar were a significant amount of your input (cover the solar panel on a solar paneled calculator or fan). But I can’t think of a place where those conditions would be true.

Edit: And even these would only be true if you didn’t have a battery of some sort. And if you’re doing large scale solar without a battery, you’re doing it wrong.

I don’t really look that scary. Still, might get a few of the out-of-towners riled up. I could also grab a sickle. (Make it a hammer and a sickle and I could imitate a communist. /s)

Well, for once I’d have to say that bland “thoughts and prayers ” generalities are pretty much all that one can really offer at this point: hopefully the casualty list won’t be too extensive - though, unfortunately, it looks like another Fitzgerald scenario in the making.

And speaking of which, WTF is going on with these destroyers? Metric megatons of money spent equipping these top-of-the-line warships with state-of-the-art electronics,, and they still get into collisions with slowpoke tankers and the like? Maybe understandable when naval vessels only had flags to communicate with, but less so in 2017.

Hop on I-80 right now, and you can be here before the eclipse starts. I have a spare bedroom (though there is a lot of stuff in it).

For us, a slight chance of rain, and some clouds, but should be okay.

Thank you for the offer!! But not my car and I’m not the driver. Sigh — so will pray to the weather gods of chaos that they will clear the clouds for the few minutes of totality.

Ah the putting human traits into animal, anthropomorphism.

Plus, I’m also a slave to the red dot.

This is indeed troubling. There needs to be a serious overhaul of procedures and review of training to determine what is happening here.

Anymouse, thought I’d relay the extraordinary influx of people in your neck of the woods.

The next total solar eclipse to be visible in the U.S. will be on 8 April 2024.

I was talking with one of the lifelong ranchers here this evening.

He said there was an eclipse here about four decades ago, when he was a teenager working on a ranch with calves.

He didn’t know there was going to be an eclipse, but when it started to darken the sky, the cattle went crazy.

Shit, man. You drive a hard bargain. Depending on traffic I could conceivably be in Broadwater in just over five hours. Maybe there’ll be no hassles with traffic if I do the drive in the middle of the night.

Hmm…

Because they know they are ‘correct’ about everything. Every thing they believe is ‘better’ than ‘what those people believe.’ If there is the slightest acknowledgement that other people’s beliefs have some merit then the ‘liberals’ might be wrong.

And that can’t be allowed to happen.

As the Taoist proverb states, “What you resist, you become.”

‘Conservative’ vs. ‘liberal’

re: #441 Stanley Sea

My girl is totally against personal interaction. EXCEPT when I’m laying flat in bed. Then she’s all love. I’m not a threat I guess.

During the day she will actually cringe if I reach too close (bad past life I’ve guessed) So I know my limits. I would die for a lap cuddle.

It’s complicated!

I’m having the reverse issue with my two new little ones. I’m Mama so their boldness knows no limit. (We’re working on that. Squirt guns got here yesterday. Heh.) They are actual cats now - though at 9 weeks still small - with amazing agility and strength and I am pounced upon frequently, often in ambush. I’m flayed. Went to my friend’s to watch GoT wearing shorts and my friend was like “OMG! Your legs are shredded!” Yeah? You oughta see my shoulders and back!

Damnedest thing happened last night though. I had just taken a shower and was sitting on the bed with the 4-legged kids. Took my turbie off and shook my hair like always and batted it to fling the wet out. Little Lord Storm (a couple of feet away) sat up, looking at me intently, and waved his little legs. So adorbs! I leaned forward so he could bat my hair thinking that what was he was wanting to do but after a couple of little bats he was over it, still just watching me. I batted my hair again, he batted his foot in the air. I stopped. He stopped. I batted my hair again, thinking no fucking way, and he batted his foot this time batting his own ear. I stopped. He stopped. Did it several times. He was imitating me! I swear, there is no other explanation. I have never heard of cats doing that. Been wondering if there hasn’t been a degree of imprinting after being bottle fed.

Incredible. Yes, I believe the imprinting. Yo da mama.

I was a roommate where she had a black kit a long time ago. My legs were torn up because you could not walk the hall without that kit on your legs.

I’m sure the Navy will be getting onto it: but probably not anytime soon. I was reading some news pieces on the reports the Navy just released (a few days ago) regarding the Fitzgerald collision. So far, their investigations have only concentrated on the post-collision damage control and rescue efforts and how they succeeded/failed: the usual onus (unsurprisingly) was pinned on the responsible senior officers: though the actual cause of the accident is still “under investigation” - in prep, they think for some pending courts-martial.
