Trump Bashes Our British Allies for Being Weak on Terrorism Before Attack Is Even Confirmed (Again)

A narcissistic fear-mongering loose cannon
Politics • Views: 34,237

Well, our so-called president did it again today. What did he do this time, you ask? As soon as reports of an apparent attack in the London subway (which injured several people) began to appear on Fox News, the Trump-thing grabbed his iPhone, jumped on Twitter, and started ranting about terrorism and slamming our British allies.

And as usual, he did this before any confirmation that it was an actual terror attack.

Trump apparently had no information to justify his statement that the suspects “were in the sights of Scotland Yard,” but being clueless has never stopped him from blathering.

And British officials were clearly irritated by Trump’s knee-jerk tweets; pissing off US allies is becoming one of Trump’s signature moves.

Prime Minister Theresa May reproached Trump for his rhetoric in the wake of what police are investigating as a terrorist attack that injured at least 18 people.

“I never think it’s helpful for anybody to speculate on what is an ongoing investigation,” she said. “As I’ve just said, the police and security services are working to discover the full circumstances of this cowardly attack and to identify all those responsible.”

You don’t need a degree in political science to understand why Trump does this. Fear-mongering about Muslims has always been one of the main pillars of his xenophobic nationalism, and he seizes on any attack like this to promote his Muslim ban — an executive order that was ruled unconstitutional, not “politically incorrect.”

Trump has been wrong when he jumps the gun, too; when a man with an assault rifle attacked a casino in the Philippines recently, Trump immediately labeled it “terrorism,” assuming it was perpetrated by an Islamic extremist. When the Philippine government said the attack was an attempted robbery and had nothing to do with terrorism, Trump never retracted those comments or mentioned it again.

But it’s very revealing to contrast this reckless behavior when it comes to suspected Islamic extremist attacks to his much more circumspect reaction to the white supremacist terrorism in Charlottesville, when he said, “It is a very important statement. So I don’t want to go quickly and just make a statement for the sake of making a political statement. I want to know the facts.”

White supremacists get the benefit of the doubt — but Muslims are instantly made to assume the guilt for any attack that even remotely looks like it came from Islamic extremists. This says everything about the way Donald Trump thinks.

“White supremacists get the benefit of the doubt”

That’s what happens when you’re a White Supremacist — you give your people the benefit of the doubt even when one of them runs over anti-racist protesters resulting in death.

Trump waits days to even consider treating Charlottesville as right wing domestic terrorism by one of his fellow traveling white supremacists when it’s clearly visible from video/news, but he’ll go live with zero information to claim an event is Islamic terrorism without a shred of evidence.

Trump’s Islamophobia is central to his worldview. Nativism is central to his allure to the white supremacists and bigot brigade. White supremacy is a tie that binds them all together. Trump’s ugly worldview actively ignores that most domestic terrorism in the US is by his fellow travelers, not foreign Islamic terrorists or American born Muslims.

His supporters don’t care either. They only see someone that doesn’t look white and like they do. It’s the fear of the other that Trump continues to rely on for his support.

It’s why he continues to attack Clinton. It’s why he attacks Obama. It’s why he attacks Obamacare (and all other Obama era policies). It’s a reactionary know-nothing approach where he fears that he lacks any capacity or capability to do the job so he’s left with destroying what his predecessors have left him.

His supporters are fine with this, because they too have bought into the view that government is bad, and that minorities and women have taken their jobs or reduced their ability to advance in society, all while rich folks continue to play the GOP base for fools and push for more tax cuts for the rich while the burdens flow to those least able to afford them (and no one likes being played a fool, so they get angry when confronted with reality).

Trump had to be forced to respond to Charlottesville in the first place and couldn’t stick to the script without claiming that “both sides” were bad. And if you watch his August 15th meltdown, you’ll notice how passionate he was when defending his White Supremacist co-travellers. It was as if he was enraged by the fact that he was being forced to condemn them in any form or fashion.

There’s this element that thinks in order for you to be a white supremacist, you have to be decked with Nazi tattoos or wearing a KKK robe. Shapiro had no problem with the racism at Breitbart until he himself was a target of Antjsemitism. Also, ISIS has taken credit for the earlier IED attack today in London.

The UK terror threat has been increased to the highest level following the attack on a Tube train in south-west London, the prime minister has said.

Theresa May said the threat had been raised from severe to critical, meaning an attack is expected imminently.

An “improvised explosive device” was detonated at Parsons Green station on a District Line train from Wimbledon.

A hunt is under way for the person who placed the bomb, with so-called Islamic State saying it is behind the attack.

Sigh.

It’s because so far, they haven’t caught the bomber and are they’re understandably worried that they may have more bombs ready to go.

Also, the perp knows that he or she has the entire UK police force looking for them and it’s only a matter of time before they get caught.

If there is another attack, it will likely be sometime quite soon in London, provided the attacker isn’t apprehended first. I’d say the next 24 hours are crucial.

In the prior thread I identified several ways that a Medicare for All system could be implemented. The Heritage position is that government needs to get out of the business of health care altogether, and completely ignore the General Welfare Clause.

It’s all about devolving the role of government and extracting massive tax cuts as services/programs are cut.

This is more of the same. This isn’t an argument against Sanders’ position, it’s an argument against government having any role in health coverage at all.

As we repeatedly see, private insurance companies refuse to do the job, and they would rather jack the costs up for everyone. It also goes to the fundamental failure of these right wingers to understand how insurance functions.

1. So this is happening…. Senator Lindsey Graham has submitted an amendment to the FY 2018 National Defense Authorization Act

2. that would let the Secretary of Homeland Security take away the citizenship of anyone in the U.S.

3. based solely on the suspicion that they had committed a belligerent act against the U.S.

4. This power would not require proof or trial of any kind. The Secretary could strip citizenship of anyone based on his/her determination.

5. Please call the Capitol Switchboard now at[no phone numbers allowed] and ask to speak with the Senators from your state.

6. You can say I am a constituent and I am calling to ask the Sen to vote against Sen Lindsey Graham’s citizenship stripping amend, SA 1047

7. The idea that govt could take away citizenship of an American citizen w/out proving the person committed a crime should be opposed by all

8. Please call twice so that you can speak with both of your Senators. Final in thread.

Nope.

Ex parte Endo, or Ex parte Mitsuye Endo, 323 U.S. 283 (1944), was a United States Supreme Court ex parte decision handed down on December 18, 1944, in which the Justices unanimously ruled that the U.S. government could not continue to detain a citizen who was “concededly loyal” to the United States. Although the Court did not touch on the constitutionality of the exclusion of people of Japanese ancestry from the West Coast—which they had found not to violate citizen rights in their Korematsu v. United States decision on the same date—the Endo ruling nonetheless led to the reopening of the West Coast to Japanese Americans after their incarceration in camps across the U.S. interior during World War II.

en.wikipedia.org

Endo was about detaining people, not about citizenship.

That’s not even remotely constitutional.

The amendment cited in the tweet above can be found here:

congress.gov

I can find no appearance of the word “citizen” anywhere in the very long document. “Homeland” (as in Homeland Security) is mentioned in such things as military courts-martials and cyber-security, but nowhere can I find any authorisation to strip anyone’s citizenship.

Perhaps it takes a better reader than me, but I don’t see the claim made in the amendment text.

So I’m digging in the bill on congress.gov because I wanted to find the text and …it’s not there?

Like, CAIR has a pdf of the supposed amendment in the press release they put out about this yesterday.

But. When you to go Congress’s website to look at the text of the bill, Amendment No 1047 to Amendment No 1003 (the one cited in the pdf) reads:

Running a search on part of the title used in the supposed amendment (“Loss of Nationality”) turns up no results when looking at the whole text.

Not sure what’s going on here, the only hits I was finding were from CAIR.

Maybe someone mis-typed the amendment number? Maybe they’re planning a stealth swap when no one’s looking?

If CAIR typoed the amendment number, they did it repeatedly throughout their page on the amendment.

The PDF of the supposed amendment says the things they say it does, but CAIR doesn’t say where they got the PDF. It appears to be a photocopy of a document that would be handed in to register as a bill or amendment.

Went ahead and did a little bit of looking at the code the supposed text would modify (the important sections are here if you want to look yourself) and it’s worth noting that all of the acts described as being qualifying for losing your nationality must be done with the intention of relinquishing that nationality. Debate, of course, centers on whether the act itself is acceptable as proof of intention.

Also, Trop v. Dulles might have been the case being misremembered earlier, where the court ruled (5-4) that it was unconstitutional for the government to revoke the citizenship of a US citizen as punishment.

There’s a book about the topic called Revoking Citizenship by Ben Herzog that apparently looks at some of these topics if anyone is interested.

In the Bible (AFAIK) the rule is in the sense of “do not murder”. I.e. do not extrajudicially execute anyone, not the Tolstovian do-not-kill. Given the divine laws like “thou shalt not suffer a witch to live” etc. the interpretative wiggle room is almost as great as with the somewhat more nebulous “thou shalt love…”.

Scott’s trying to put the onus on the facility, not on his failure to act.

He wants people to think that simply because there was another nearby facility that this ends his responsibility. The facility was asking for help.

What we still need to learn is precisely what was indicated in those calls, what was requested, and what Scott’s office suggested.

Even if there was a facility right across the street, the nursing facility would need help in getting patients to safety. That would mean getting EMS to assist in relocating patients, coordinating care plans, etc., all of which would get a boost from the governor’s office had they bothered.

How do I know about this? When mom’s rehab facility lost power during Sandy, they had a backup generator. When there was a fire with the backup system, all the patients (including mom) had to be relocated - requiring people and their care plans (including meds) to be identified and moved to appropriate facilities with space and the means to care for the patients.

There’s a lot that can go wrong in that. Failing to track all the patients and their needs can have deadly consequences. Without having everyone on the same page, every one is put at risk.

Scott’s deflection isn’t going to look good.

I honestly don’t know what to think here. Initially I wanted to side with the staff who found themselves in an incredibly difficult situation. I heard an interview yesterday on NPR with the daughter of one of the residents there (her mom is fine), and she said the temperature was 110-115 degrees inside the facility. I can’t understand why the employees and management would make phone calls to the governor and FPL but not evacuate the residents from there, especially since there is a hospital across the street.

The fact that this has not happened at any other facility, even though chances are every facility in Florida faced similar challenges, says to me that there were some very bad decisions made by the management staff.

During Harvey we pre-emptively moved first floor residents with ambulation issues to the second floor, in anticipation of possible first floor flooding (our facility has flooded before). We also discussed our plan should the roof of the building become compromised. In short, we had back up plans for emergencies. If things had become life-threatening we would have called 911 to assist with evacuation.

ETA: Let me be clear, Scott told them to call for help if they needed it, they did, and nothing happened. He is not without blame.

Unshaken Defiance  Sep 15, 2017 • 2:23:58pm

Here we go again. But this time really showed the range.

North Korea has successfully conducted its longest downrange ballistic missile test ever with yet another provocative launch over Japan, showing it has at least the range to hit the U.S. Pacific Ocean territory of Guam. The incident came after the United Nations Security Council hit the increasingly isolated country with the toughest sanctions to date. At the same time there’s an ongoing debate between the United states and its allies all about how to constrain the Hermit Kingdom amid concerns that whatever they decide could provoke an arms race in East Asia.

On Sept. 14, 2017, the North Koreans fired what appeared to be another Hwasong-12 intermediate range ballistic missile. It reached a maximum altitude of approximately almost 480 miles and traveled a total distance of around 2,300 miles, over the Japanese home island of Hokkaido, before falling into the Pacific Ocean some 17 minutes later. This was particularly notable since it was a much shallower launch envelope than in previous tests and more representative of what one might expect to see in an actual strike.

FWIW, I just saw this text credited to the Imbecile-in-Chief President Trump by the BBC as commentary on today’s Tube bombing:

“Our hearts and prayers go out to the people of London, who suffered a vicious terrorist attack today. I spoke with a wonderful woman, British prime minister Theresa May, this morning and relayed America’s deepest sympathy, as well as our absolute commitment to eradicating the terrorists from our planet. Radical Islamic terrorism, it will be eradicated, believe me.”

President Trump, speaking at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland

Slightly better than his initial inane Tweets, but still quick to blame “Radical Islamic Terrorism” when the fact is that no one yet has the least idea who planted that IED* on the Tube: though the British police are still looking - rather hard, I imagine. ISIS/L of course, have taken credit for it, but since their organizational credibility is, amazingly, slightly worse that Trump’s, who knows?

*One would think that hardened (and presumably experienced) terrorists would do a better job of rigging up a bomb than they did: it seems (despite the panic and injuries) to have been something of a dud.

Well, slovenly composition notwithstanding (and Podhoretz is right, this is fucking embarrassing coming from the White House), the content of this memo is pretty important, inasmuch as it’s a rare outburst of a sane foreign policy decision*. It’s going to make the usual gang of neocon warmongering hawks unhappy - I’ve read some stuff here and there that the Usual Suspects Of Neoimperialism have been pushing - mainly online - for official US support of the Kurdish Independence Referendum: presumably on the grounds that a shiny-new Republic Of Kurdistan would suddenly and magically become a Beacon Of Peace, Prosperity and Democracy in the MidEast; not to mention “our” (and Israel’s) newest BFF and ally: fortunately (for us) they seem not to have won out. BSD User …The server is running Linux. What do you expect?
Cockney …No chance luv, carrnt find it neever.

Emo … I don’t know what you’re looking for but it’s no use.
Fail … Your page already boarded the failboat.
Latin … Pagina quam tu quaeris abest.
Linux User … That’s fixed in subversion
LOLcat …U cant haz page, is 404. Srsly. KTHXBAI!
Pittsburghese …This page needs fixed n’at… it’s all caddywhompus! Yinz needs look somewheres else.

The entries for the languages I can judge look straight, can’t vouch for the slangs.

They have to spread those costs out somehow. So those items you list were still a part of the bigger ripoff cost.

I guess that’s my point.

Because my insurance will pay (albeit the contract payment they ended up paying is less than the bill list price), thus the hospital gets revenue, which makes up for all the people showing up in the emergency room because they afford regular medical care.

The problem here is that Dems can be outraged all they want, they can scream to the high heavens, it doesn’t matter if there’s no true way to disseminate it in any sustained way. #220 sagehen has the point about needing our own media platform, and yes, it’s failed but the point is that the right wing gets miles out of an inch of outrage because they can manipulate the media wholesale, especially when they cow it utterly with threats of ‘liberal media’ attacks. Meanwhile, you can’t get a single fucking outlet to even pretend Clinton voters exist except to make them amorphous antagonists to the Trump voters they make hagiographies to every week since the election.

And don’t get me started on the Sunday shows, where they go out of their way to book conservative after conservative even when prominent Dem figures who are actually relevant to the fucking issues they discuss are available and there to talk.

There’s no megaphone for us. It’s not about being more outraged, it’s about having anyone actually fucking hear the voice of our outrage, and we’re all but silenced at this point, and I don’t know how to change that.

If Graham was honest about healthcare reform, instead of dismantling the ACA tiny bit by tiny bit, he’d hold hearings on the extensive lack of care many Americans face.

The religion of the GOP is not so much Christianity, but the Randian lure of a dystopian survivalist.

The Je$u$ stuff done by GOP politicians is just to milk the easy marks.

I call it “Churchianity” - I can’t take credit for the name, I heard it somewhere long ago, but unfortunately I can’t remember the source to make an attribution. What it boils down to is a watered-down, feel-good brand of self-serving religion whose only purpose is to assure the believer that they are a good person and are going to heaven without having to make any hard choices in life. Included in this are the variants of the prosperity gospel.

Mueller hit Facebook with a search warrant. He got more info than was provided to Congress.

A search warrant from Mr. Mueller would mean the special counsel now has a powerful tool in his arsenal to probe the details of how social media was used as part of a campaign of Russian meddling in the U.S. presidential election. Facebook hasn’t shared the same information with Congress in part because of concerns about disrupting the Mueller probe, and possibly running afoul of U.S. privacy laws, people familiar with the matter said.

A Facebook spokesman said the company continues to investigate and is cooperating with U.S. authorities. A spokesman for Mr. Mueller declined to comment on the investigation.

re: #177 Jay C

FWIW, I just saw this text credited to the Imbecile-in-Chief President Trump by the BBC as commentary on today’s Tube bombing:

Slightly better than his initial inane Tweets, but still quick to blame “Radical Islamic Terrorism” when the fact is that no one yet has the least idea who planted that IED* on the Tube: though the British police are still looking - rather hard, I imagine. ISIS/L of course, have taken credit for it, but since their organizational credibility is, amazingly, slightly worse that Trump’s, who knows?

*One would think that hardened (and presumably experienced) terrorists would do a better job of rigging up a bomb than they did: it seems (despite the panic and injuries) to have been something of a dud.

Why did he have to say she’s a “wonderful woman?” What the fuck does that have to do with anything? I swear, my tolerance for his asswholiness is at an all time low.

And, since I’m on a petty rant, note that Melon dressed up more for her flights to Texas and Florida, than she did for her introductory role today.

I don’t like the idea of a LWNJ equivalent of Fox News on principle. Even so, I’d be for it if I thought it would work (because I’m that desperate), but I don’t.

The biggest problem in US politics is definitely how to make reality-based political messaging competitive with lies that people want to believe in.

Unfortunately, the Air Farce is especially infested by this kind of anti-american & anti-christian fool. Yet another argument in favor of admitting that a separate air force was a mistake and that putting Tactical air back under Army and giving the Navy Strategic command would be a vast improvement. A big benefit being we’d then get rid of all the duplicated officers - especially like these chaplains.

I’ve wondered how much the Air Force Academy’s proximity to fundy world headquarters in Colorado Springs has to do with this. The Academy was there first, in 1958. The fundy invasion of the area and their infiltration of the Air Force came later and seem to have started during the Reagan era.

This kind of shit was unheard of when I was an Air Force brat in the 50s and 60s. Thanks to all those sciencey space types they recruited after Sputnik, the AF was probably the least religious of the armed forces.

Met parents for dinner. Talked about St. Louis. They’re 68. All they would fix on is the stuff that happened after, no matter how much I tried to get them to understand that they aren’t getting any action by being civil. They did agree that they probably skipped the trial because the judge was sympathetic.
