Hillary Clinton’s Fascinating Interview on NPR Fresh Air: ‘Optimistic About Our Country, but I Am Not Naive’

Politics • Views: 45,328

MP3 Audio

Terry Gross’s interview with Hillary Clinton is a fascinating listen, but also depressing because instead of this smart, funny, thoughtful woman we have the Trump-thing squatting in the White House like a malevolent toad, wreaking havoc on everything good about the United States.

In an alternate universe in which Hillary is the president, the US is still respected by our allies and still on course to become a better place, instead of the nightmarish reality we live in, in which our allies are alienated, our social safety net is rapidly being dismantled, the worst people in the country are empowered, and white supremacism is ascendant in a way we haven’t seen in a century.

Anyway, give it a listen, and think about what might have been.

By the way, the quote that’s been wildly circulated all day, saying she “wouldn’t rule out” questioning the legitimacy of the election, is being taken out of context; after that section Clinton makes it clear she’s not suggesting some kind of attempt to overturn the election results, because there’s no mechanism to do so.

But impeachment? That, we do have a mechanism for.

I’m scheduling an evening drive to run errands so I can listen on my NPR station.

I love listening to Terri when I’m driving.

Every time I hear HRC I get sad and mad again though. Damnet America and Kremlin op!!!

I got my copy of her book and Katy Tur’s book in the mail today. They sat in a box on the porch for hours on a rainy muggy day so I’m letting them dry out a bit before I start reading. Looking forward to listening to the Terry Gross interview once the album side is played out.

The more Hillary points out just how much of a crock last year was, the harder the media works to push the idea that she was totally responsible for her loss.

Waning US influence in SE Asia is encouraging autocratic regimes to be more autocratic. And China could care less.

Example of today: Cambodia. Its PM is cracking down on opposition parties, shutting down VOA and Radio Free Asia outlets, and intends to stay in power 10 more years. He’s been the PM for 39 already.

ft.com

The actions come at a time when US influence is seen as receding in Southeast Asia, with the economic and military rise of China and the arrival of a new Trump administration that itself attacks media and its own political opponents in crude terms.

Still, the anti-democratic rollback in Cambodia — long a laboratory for US post-cold war civil society programmes — is especially abrupt.

It’s the end of the American era in world politics. A decade from now, no one will remember when the USA struggled for democracy around the world with its “soft power.” They’ll only remember its wholesale abandonment of entire populations to petty dictators and imperial China.

Oh, and Russia.

The problem with mockery is that one possible consequence is that you make the subject of mockery entertaining.

Our politics really are post-modern, in that there’s a conscious performative quality—there’s always a camera, and always a show—and one consequence of that is the bleed of the actual person and the narrative person created by the ways they’re presented and “read” in media formats.

As a consequence, you can caricature someone and end up actually softening the very dangerous edges that should be the focus.

Reporter killed by crocodile while washing hands in lagoon

A Financial Times journalist was killed by a crocodile while washing his hands in a lagoon in Sri Lanka during a vacation with pals.

Paul McClean, 25, an Oxford University graduate, is understood to have wandered away from his group of friends to find a toilet when he was attacked.

The British victim, from Surrey, about 90 minutes southwest of London, was seen “waving his hands in the air” in desperation before being dragged under the water at a lagoon called Crocodile Rock near Arugam Bay.

Yeah. I think that is THE thing that takes it there, even without the Ivanka doppelganger. Wouldn’t be surprised about any of it based on his history.

Just listened to the Terry Gross interview and it was interesting because she played the clip of 45 at one of his campaign rallies being absolutely disgusted at the thought of HRC being late from a break during one of their debates because she had to use the ladies room. It was so odd and the projection spidey senses went up. So the pee thing is there I think and it’s just a matter of what else was too.

I’m with you, the young girls thing makes a lot of sense. I guess I then wonder if, even though the GOPers who were briefed could absolutely not talk about it, they would still all rally around this guy. Like, I feel like there would be a group of GOPers working towards a contingency and telling the others…we cannot support him, trust me on this, we will have to cut ties. But, they do really want their tax cuts don’t they? Or they are scared at how far the rot goes in their party.

Also, I do think DiFi could become pretty disgusted at a water works show just by the nature of it being validated and confirming some of all of our worst fears about how and why the election was essentially stolen.

Yup. I read a few reviews of the first episode yesterday on a largely conservative site. I was struck by the number of people who complained that going back and forth in time was unnecessary and confusing. The first time that happened when I watched it was a bit disconcerting, but by the second time around it was obvious that they were pointing out that we were repeating the mistakes of the ’40s a mere couple decades later-almost word for word.
Things are always just enough different that people keep repeating the errors of the past.

Legislated fuckery to make solar panels more expensive and downright punitive is the new thing, apparently.

I’m really assuming at this point that it wasn’t something as scandalous as we like to imagine. If it was the pee tape, it would’ve been too attention-grabbing to be kept under wraps. A Congressman would’ve leaked it, or an aide or even someone in Trump’s administration. If it had been something even more scandalous — S&M orgies, child sacrifice, Trump promising to give the Midwest to Russia — it would’ve been leaked even faster.

I suspect it was a relatively mundane overview of Trump’s shaky mental health — which would still probably be enough to make people leave the meeting looking shaken.

Decent summary here: Senate scuttles Rand Paul’s war powers repeal

Virginia Democrat Tim Kaine, who has pushed for a new AUMF with Arizona Republican Jeff Flake, said it was “way past time” for a vote.

“There has been no particular motive or forcing mechanism that has made the [Foreign Relations] Committee take this up, bat it around, hear from experts, debate, amend it and send it to the floor,” Kaine said of his and Flake’s proposal.

“Of all the powers Congress has, the one that we should most jealously guard is the power to declare war,” he said.

But opponents of the measure argued repealing the two war resolutions on such a quick timeline would endanger military operations in Afghanistan and against ISIS in Iraq and Syria and send mixed signals to U.S. troops and allies overseas.

To me, the opponents’ arguments sound too much like either concern-trolling or lingering Stockholm Syndrome from post-9/11 endless war (which is to the US like opioids to addicts).

I like how he neglects to include the part that explains why the solar panels aren’t used in a blackout. From the article:

“Renewable generator systems connected to the grid without batteries are not a standby power source during an FPL outage,” the company’s solar-connection rules state. “The system must shut down when FPL’s grid shuts down in order to prevent dangerous back feed on FPL’s grid. This is required to protect FPL employees who may be working on the grid.”

This isn’t restricted to just FL, btw. Same is true for my parents in NJ and has been since they got solar panels installed over 10 years ago. If there is no way to completely disconnect the house from the power grid, there’s no way for the house to run on solar panels during a blackout without risking the safety of the employees working on the lines.

This doesn’t excuse the rest of the bullshit FPL has pulled - the article is clear they’ve got a lot of other issues - but the solar cells having to be disconnected is legit for worker safety and not just lobbying.

There’s a simple solution to that which doesn’t require any new technology, in that if you install a switch that completely disconnects the home from the electric grid then you can run whatever the hell you’d like off the solar power. FPL has apparently made it illegal to disconnect your home from the power grid, however, and that is egregious.

Which does beg the question of does anyone in FL have a whole home generator and if so, how the fuck do they handle that situation? Because the same issues of back feed stand there.

Down in the boondocks where I currently live, pretty much every other home has a generator or even a bank of generators that cut on automatically with the frequent power failures (fallen trees, lightning strikes, etc.). Twenty years or so ago, they used to warn about backfeed. No more, and not for a long time. Obviously either the generator folks or the power folks or both don’t worry much about it any more. JFK talking about how if you seek to gain power “by riding the back of the tiger, you will wind up inside” that tiger. This was meant as a warning to the enemy.

The way they described the events of the day, and how & why it took so long for the ARVN to finally arrive and help… I certainly wouldn’t be thinking of them as “allies.” I’d be pissed as hell, and telling my CO and anyone else who would listen that this whole endeavor is a waste of time and lives and money and it’s time we get the hell out. (did I interpret correctly that Vann also saw things that way, but Harkins for whatever reasons of his own really wanted to keep things going and even expand it? Ok, the problem remains - gravity.

The structures in that universe look like they are supposed to be on planets (or planetoids.) The architecture represents how one would build a structure if there were a force pulling down. Lifting what looks like an Italian city-state and placing it free in space won’t work.

Away from a planet, the net force of gravity will pull towards the middle of the structure, toward the center of mass.

From what I have seen over the decades, almost no SciFi producers or writers have a clue of what it really takes to move in space.

Here is a good little article just on the ISS:

How Does the International Space Station Maintain Its Orientation?

[…]

Nominally, attitude control is provided by four control moment gyroscopes (CMGs). Each CMG contains a wheel that is 220 pounds (100 kg). That wheel spins at 6600 rpm, resulting in an angular momentum of 3500 ft-lb-s (4742.5 N-m-s). The basic idea is that if a torque induces a rotation on the ISS, those wheels can rotate about their gimbals to change the angular momentum of the ISS, creating a counter torque. Using CMGs is much more subtle than using thrusters, so microgravity experiments are not impacted. CMGs do have limits, though, so thrusters can assist, if needed. That assistance is needed whenever the torques are large.

To minimize thruster assists, during quiescent operations, we do a type of attitude control called momentum management (MM). This is done by maneuvering the ISS to a torque equilibrium attitude (TEA) that was analyzed by the ground a year or more in advance. This TEA is an attitude that, with meanderings of up to 15 degrees, will result in the gravity torques and atmospheric torques adding up, over an orbit, to close to zero. The CMGs then take up the slack to make that zero.

[…]

Angular momentum, torque, precession… all these things are usually ignored in SciFi shows.

But Atlantis spent most of it’s existence on the surface of planets, and so it was designed that way.

Aerodynamics only come into play in atmospheres, and Atlantis would only need to deal with that on ascent and descent from a planet.

I know, so many are ranting about how this is rewriting canon, but I think that his just cover for their own prejudice.

TOS movies already introduced a previously not-known Vulcan into Spock’s timeline, on more than one occasion.

It’s not a giant leap to believe that Sarek, who married a human, may have played step-father to a human too.

Some profound philosopher has probably expounded on the illusion of civilization.

Trump is bad. But to me the worst part of it are all the Americans who simply don’t care about how bad Trump really is. So many of our fellow Americans don’t really care about the future, or their fellow human. They are angry at being “left behind” - perhaps a hangover from the religious fantasy of the same name.

Maybe that’s it - we’re living in the defunct relict of an America overdosed on fundamentalist religion.

Few designs in SciFi shows/movies seem to care about these things.

The Death Stars in SW are one of the few designs that I can recall, that are designed to reflect the reality of mass and gravity. Still a lot of things wrong about them, but the designers figured out that something that massive will be pulled into a spherical shape.

He blamed the whole thing on Media Matters and other radical leftist groups calling out for his sponsors to drop him.

The best part of the interview was when after blaming the leftist groups Matt Lauer said: “So it was a vast left wing conspiracy?”

O’Reilly fired back “Don’t be sarcastic!”

Bill remains standing as the most pure, spotless, great guy no longer on TV.

As a nation totally integrated into the global economy and highly dependent on imports, they can do quite a bit to us. Targeted sanctions would be a primary method. They could for example ban all exports to the US of components used in the US arms industry. They could limit or end purchases of US debt. They could kick out our military assets. Of course, the most effective thing to would just be to seize all of Trump’s international assets like you would do to some tin pot dictator who decided to terrorize his neighbors in addition to his on citizens.

Sarah Palin Disney Trailer

It occurs to me that the same kinds of TV shows and movies the clip is spoofing - where a yuk-yuk, straight-talkin’ non-expert gets elevated to a position of power and somehow manages to shake everything up for the better by doing and saying all the outrageous things that no one else dares utter - helped train the American public to elect an offensive buffoon and believe it would magically fix everything.

Hahaha I do remember that. But yeah I agree with your observations, it’s part of why people wrongly believe “We need more outsiders” in politics. I’d rather people who actually took the time to take classes and try to understand things like foreign policy, economics, than some “straight talker” whose only qualification is “HE/SHE’S NOT FROM WASHINGTON!” And that spoof is brilliant.

The Senate Intelligence Committee has unexpectedly canceled a Tuesday session to interview Michael Cohen, a former lawyer for President Trump’s business and a close associate of the president.

The meeting was scheduled as part of the committee’s investigation into Russia’s interference in the 2016 election. Cohen arrived for the interview with his attorney Tuesday morning, but left the closed door session after about an hour, informing reporters waiting outside that committee staff had suddenly informed him they did not wish the interview to go forward.

“We will come back for a voluntary interview whenever we can to meet with them and we look forward to voluntarily cooperating with the House committee and with anyone else who has an inquiry in this area,” Cohen’s lawyer Steve Ryan told reporters after the aborted meeting.

The sad thing is that we’ve pretty much become (if, indeed, we ever weren’t at one point) a country that glorifies bullies: ones that deifies assholes precisely for being assholes, because we’ve mistaken being an asshole for ‘strength’. We’ve bought into the myth of the Alpha, the leader that becomes leader by shoving everyone around the most and blustering, because that, apparently, is ‘truth strength’.

Trump at the UNGA is a shit show of epic proportions. A rambling ragetweet storm at the podium, and just as fact-free as ever.

“Major portions of the world are in conflict and some, in fact, are going to hell.”

No. It isn’t.

The US is going to hell, mostly because Trump doesn’t know what the fuck he’s doing or talking about, but that’s not what Trump’s talking about.

He’s talking about war, and conflicts - and in particular he’s thinking that (Islamic) terrorism is the reason, and that North Korea and Iran are behind much of this.

As an objective matter, there is less conflict now than in decades. There are fewer dying in conflicts. Terrorism hasn’t helped IS achieve its goals. The US is still engaged in the ME. Israel is still there, and various Arab regimes are still in power, despite attempts to overthrow (see Syria).

Trump’s approach to Syria hasn’t changed anything, but his approach to North Korea has increased the chances that North Korea will respond aggressively. That’s the opposite of reducing conflict and tensions.

Trump certainly isn’t mentioning Myanmar and the genocidal actions against the native Muslim population there. That would step all over his narrative.

Elsewhere, there are simmering conflicts, but they are the low intensity conflicts that most Americans (and Trump) don’t give a shit about.

But Trump has decided that Jong Un is now Rocket Man - as though giving him a nickname means that he takes him seriously (and Jong Un will respond by firing more rockets). Nothing in his speech shows he understands any of the issues.

It’s all the usual BS empty platitudes. Mostly because he doesn’t understand what he’s supposed to be doing.

It’s the battle of Elton John and his music…

I hope Sir Elton films a message telling both Donny Trump and Kim Jong-un to stop acting like little bratty children, shut up and stop using his song titles for their stupid political warring.

Issue is how long the mail takes to go through security. It could take snail mail a month to go through to a Senator depending on volume. Calling is still the best option imo.

re: #420 Kafitrar

I’m really losing patience with my socialist friends. They were all in for cherry-picking section of Clinton’s book. And they’re blaming her loss on her support for NAFTA and the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP). God, if I read the word neo-liberal one more time… And half of them are freaking Canadians (apologies to Eclectic Cyborg and the other Canadians here). My Virginian friend won’t support Northam in the governor’s election there. I going to start muting them pretty soon before I respond by fighting dirty.

Priorities. Before any attempt can be made at some kind of socialist utopia, it is necessary to first prevent the GOP/plutocracy from implementing their vision of unlimited power for the ultra-wealthy and wage slavery (at best) for everyone else.

That second tweet is why contacting my reps sucks so hard for me. I live in the very top of the Texas Panhandle. All my representatives, national and state, are fucking lunatics. The closest thing I have to a moderate voted against hurricane aid to his own state because he was mad at Nancy Pelosi.

The people answering the phones are likely unpaid interns as well. Ask them to mark you as a pro/con on the subject. The Senators keep tally logs (on Google Docs when I was there) and they do matter (at least to the Senator I worked for - Udall (D - CO)).

Do not go negative. If you do they will either chart your calls or pass your information along to Capital Police (I have a great story on this subject for another time).

Yes! Get your position tallied anyway. And show support when the staffer confirms they are against it.

I read a tweet from a staffer for D congressperson who was lamenting that they hadn’t been hearing from as many folks as the last time we battled Trumpcare.

It helps to have everyone in the halls talking about how many of their constituents they are hearing from. It also sends a message the GOPers that we are engaged and will fight.

What’s the difference between beer nuts and deer nuts?

Beer nuts are about $1.25 and deer nuts are under a buck.
