There are quite a few versions of this song on YouTube, and they’re usually great because it’s just a great song, but this one is the best version I’ve ever seen. Watch the whole thing and you’ll see why.

Crowded House performing “Don’t Dream It’s Over” live at the Auckland Town Hall, New Zealand, 8th April 2010.

So has anybody else been upgraded to the new Firefox (57.0)? So far it seems to be faster and LGF doesn’t seem to have any problems with it.

Yep. From what I understand it’s pretty much a total rewrite. Optimized for multi-core processors. Going to stream a video from the other day that had some serious lag and see if it’s improved.

Three minutes to poll closing in Louisiana. Will we send the Republicans a message that no one is safe? Or will we endorse an inferior candidate because he has the right letter after his name? We’re about to find out.

The first early votes from two parishes are in! One is Jefferson Davis Parish, three guesses how that went. The other is Red River Parish, where Edwards is ahead by one vote.

Not too long ago I had a conversation with a doctor that didn’t go well. Background: We’re replacing the in-house “night doc” with an internet/phone based Telemed system. There will still be a doc on call for a last resort, but for night shift issues, we now call telemed. Short story long, soon to be former night doc is complaining about it. I show him an incident when a new admit came in unstable and the night doc left us a useless note that could just as well be called in from Taiwan. (It was his note and I pretended not to realize it:) This guy proceeded to rail against (diverse - wink wink) people and the you can’t say Indian, black, Chinese anymore. (By this time the nurses’station was jammed at shift change.) I got the last word: With all your education and decades of critical thinking is that all you got? Did you ever hear anybody but a white man complain that you can’t say black or indian? Does it occur to you that a stupid idea of a remote internet based house doc is a better alternative than you?

Man, that felt awesome.

Early voting is reporting very quickly this evening. 44 parishes are now in, including East Baton Rouge. The GOoPer Schroder is ahead 2 to 1 overall, and 60 to 40 in Red Stick, not a good sign. Edwards has made progress in the early vote almost everywhere, but usually not enough to overcome his first-round deficit.

Some people like snakes. Some people are terrified of snakes. I’m somewhere in between; I am not a superfriend of snakes, but I can be comfortable around them as long as I know they’re not venomous. The Big Boss’s daughter works for the MN DNR, and she has a few snakes at home that she sometimes brings by our office for visits. They’re pretty cool.

Screw up that maneuver even a little and the snake can strike at your hand, but you can’t see the snake.

Out in the open seems scarier, but the snake has the option to back away, you have the option to back away, and you’ve got the poles to work with. In the crate, the snake is “cornered” and will just strike; also, if it tries to lunge to the rat you’re holding….

57 parishes in, but nothing yet from Orleans. Edwards is down by just over 2 to 1, or about 23,000 votes. No real clues on how Election Day turnout went. Almost all the other big parishes have their early votes in, which is unusual here.

In other action, Rob Maness, former loser Tea Party Senate candidate, is still a loser; he trails 59-41 in a special election to replace Schroder in the State House if Schroder wins the Treasurer’s race. So far, that looks likely, although the margin really is in “it coulda bin woise” territory.

To let you know how bad things are in some of northern Louisiana, early voters in Bossier Parish voted for Schroder 84-16… and that was a six-point gain for Edwards, which is a bit below average so far.

When I was a kid I was occasionally around Nath Kabelia—aka jogis. They’re a gypsy group that handle snakes: they do they “snake charmer” routine with the cobra rising out of the basket, but they also catch snakes for homeowners and cadge together charms and blessings that repel snakes and snakebites.

The moment they were the most nervous and delicate was cracking open the cobra baskets, because it was when they had the least control of the snake but their hands were closest to it. Even though they damaged the fangs of the cobras used for shows, you could still get poisoned bad enough to merit hospitialization.

Note: they 100% did not believe in their own reputation as having supernatural snake mojo.

New Orleans’ early voters just came in and voted for Edwards 84-16, far above expectations! That by itself cut Schroder’s statewide lead almost in half.

I think they want to stimulate the snake into striking at it so the feeding response kicks in. Otherwise a cold dead rat in the dark next to the snake might not register as “food.”

Edwards is down by 24,000 votes with every parish’s early vote in but one, and a quarter of the Election Day vote (no Election Day votes from New Orleans). Honestly, not bad, but to actually win, he’ll need a massive lift from the Crescent City. He just might get it.

Speaking of New Orleans, LaToya Cantrell has a 3,000 vote lead over Desiree Charbonnet for the mayor’s office. The winner will be New Orleans’ first woman mayor in 300 years.

The decorations on our Thanksgiving tables will be plates piled high with food taken from the potluck buffet on the kitchen counter. We’ve never really been much for ceremony, preferring instead to focus on the fact that it’s one of the few times Mrs. Fish’s full extended family can gather in peace.

Sounds lovely. I’ve scaled back on Xmas Eve dinner-I no longer haul out the Wedgwood (that has to be washed by hand) or the damask linen (that is a pain to iron) for that. I just use the everyday china and a bright tablecloth and lots of good food and friends and family.
That last bit is always the important part.

Edit: Not quite the same thing as what you’re describing, but it’s reduced leftovers and dishes.

And if we let them force Franken out of the Senate, it is over.

It will be open season on every Democrat in congress. If they can pick off their Fox News bete noir, nobody is safe. (Think how steamed they are that O’Reilly, one of Franken’s earliest targets, is gone—and think of the glee in their dark hearts if they can make Franken go away.)

Fuck. That. Shit.

Sorry/not sorry, but I’m going to say it—what Franken did (IF, in fact, he did what she says he did) is gross and idiotic, but it does not rise to a level, in my mind anyway, to make him leave the Senate.

My formative years were spent in a time when “date rape” was not a recognized thing. Back then, if you got “date raped,” it was because you exercised poor judgement/got too drunk. Yeah, I still remember being pinned down in some asshole’s bed and waiting for him to pass out so I could climb out the window and walk home barefoot. Do I want to go back to that. HELL TO THE NO. But there are still degrees of awfulness, and all things are not equal.

I think “Believe Women” should be changed to “Listen to Women.” Don’t get me wrong—I’m glad that people are feeling confident and able to share their stories and receive understanding and support. But I don’t want it be swept up in an “All Lives Matter” bullshit storm. And if the troglodytes on the right see an opening—if the Dems decide that we have to be purer than the driven snow—they (the right wingers) will unleash a hellstorm of accusations against every fucking Dem—and if we insist that we’re going to hold our side to a standard that is unattainable and unrealistic, we are fucked.

OK—bring on the downdings and criticisms. I can take it (I’ve been through worse.)

My family tradition is hor d’oeuvres, but not the fancy kind - the mini pizza bagels and mozzarella sticks and olives and pickles and veggies and dip and cheese and crackers. Jalapeno poppers. That sort of thing.

I will probably convince mr. klys we need to do at least some of that for Christmas Eve.

We’ve always had ham for Christmas lunch, and my mom has always made a huge breakfast for Christmas morning. The kids have been forced to endure sitting at the table for the whole breakfast before being allowed to open their presents. Christmas Eve generally turns out to be a general mishmash of whatever leftovers happen to be floating around the kitchen, and Christmas cookies.

If the weather is nice, you go on a nice hike and have a picnic. We might do something like that this year since, due to my-daughter-the-doctor’s schedule, our Christmas will be on Christmas Eve (which is when we normally have our big dinner anyway.) We did the Christmas hike/picnic thing a few years ago and it was very nice and uncrowded.

Well, Edwards is going to fall short. He’s about 50,000 votes behind now with about 3/4 of the Election Day vote in, and I don’t see enough votes in New Orleans and other Dem strongholds to make that up. But he’s made it a much tougher race than expected, and has over 40% of the vote even now. It will get closer as New Orleans comes in.

Johns Hopkins psychologist John Gartner:

“…I think there is an 80 percent chance he’s going to push that nuclear button. Why? Number one, Trump is a malignant narcissist. As far as I know, I cannot recall a single malignant narcissist in history who did not start a major war.

Now add one more factor: Under the surface, this [Robert] Mueller investigation is turning him and his family into cornered animals. They are guilty of treason, guilty of money-laundering, guilty of collusion, guilty of obstruction of justice. They are guilty as sin and they know it. The noose is tightening around their necks and, unlike Richard Nixon, Trump and his cabal are not going to leave gracefully.

Donald Trump is going to be like Bonnie and Clyde; he’s going to shoot his way out. The best way for him to shoot his way out is to start a war and distract from his misdeeds, rally the country behind him and — most importantly from a psychological perspective — to transform the feeling of being a weak victim of a massive criminal investigation into that of an omnipotent destructive and powerful leader by destroying and killing millions of people.”salon.com

And it’s over. It took 2 hours and 7 minutes from the polls closing to the final votes tallied. Louisiana does a good job running elections.

Louisiana Treasurer- Final and Unofficial results
Derrick Edwards, Democrat 165,269 (44.26%)
John Schroder, Republican 208,118 (55.74%)

Edwards should have been a bad joke of a candidate. He’s a lawyer, a paraplegic and a disability advocate, but has degrees in accounting (unlike Schroder) making him more suitable for the actual job. He ran 8th in last year’s Senate race, just behind David Duke. He raised less than $25,000 for his entire campaign (Schroder raised over 50 times that much). He didn’t get the Democrats’ endorsement until the runoff, mostly because he hardly campaigned due to lack of resources.

And he won more than 44% of the vote. He gained 13 points from the primary five weeks ago. If I’m a GOoPer, my collar’s feeling tighter this evening.

I have done this job. Did it for a summer as a teen.

Most venomous snakes won’t eat something that’s obviously dead when they first see it. They have to strike at the moving target or better yet, the target needs to be actually alive. We used live mice, but you couldn’t just toss them in live and active either, in case they bit or scratched the snake. So you hauled them out, gave them a whack to stun them a bit, and then opened and tossed them in.

For those not familiar with the PineCreek channel on Youtube, it consists of many thoughtful dissections of the poor thinking and/or misleading nature of many religious pronouncements.

In the latest installment:

Why I no longer go to church, sermons like these: Steven Furtick; FAITH

the preacher Steven Furtick is taken to task. You can tell the video must hit home with many fundamentalists, if you read the comments.

We need now more than ever to see more of these kind of public dissections of the conmen.

Left wing puritopians are almost as much an enemy of progress as right wing Trump cultists. When we listen to these self-righteous scolds we always end up getting hurt.

It’s trickier than that: the RW ratfuckers & trolls make sure their message gets spread and magnified and held up as the paragon of modern progressive thought.

They did that big time for Bernie, but ultimately not for Bernie’s sake, it was simply a matter of doing anything to divide the Democrats & weaken Hillary.

This topic is all but impossible to discuss in our talking-point, sound-byte and Twitter driven climate of discourse. Human interaction is too nuanced and dependent on context and circumstances to be discussed that way.

Certainly, there can be degrees of complicity, but non-consensual sex is, by definition, rape. Naturally there is a distinction between physical, violent assault and taking advantage of someone who is too intoxicated, but it is still not acceptable, and even if a woman bears some degree of complicity, it does not mean that she was “asking for it”, nor does it absolve the man of his role in the act.

Well, you know, mistranslations happen all the time.

BTW, the Chinese Garden on 2nd Avenue is a real place; it’s in Camas, WA. I used to go there for the lunch buffet from time to time. It’s not bad. My all-time favorite Chinese place in the Portland, OR metro area was House of Louie; that’s a good place, and I always recommend it to people visiting the city.

Ran across a great documentary, The Search for General Tso, which is not only about the eponymous dish (which is unknown in China) but also how it came to be that nearly every town in America had a Chinese laundry and a Chinese restaurant, namely as a result of the Chinese Exclusion Act, which made it illegal to hire Chinese people, meaning that they had no choice but to open family businesses.

Like the south Texas colonias, this is a hidden world of want and desperation right on our doorsteps.

Many older Americans are living a desperate, nomadic life

In her powerful new book, “Nomadland,” award-winning journalist Jessica Bruder reveals the dark, depressing and sometimes physically painful life of a tribe of men and women in their 50s and 60s who are — as the subtitle says — “surviving America in the twenty-first century.” Not quite homeless, they are “houseless,” living in secondhand RVs, trailers and vans and driving from one location to another to pick up seasonal low-wage jobs, if they can get them, with little or no benefits.

It seems counter-intuitive, why would these “patriots” deny their country’s achievements? Idiots.

The Moon landings were a monumental achievement of advanced science and engineering and, ultimately, of organized intellect. As such, they are anathema to anti-intellectuals and to the profoundly anti-intellectual bigotry that pervades American society. If some self educated entrepreneur like Henry Ford had managed to reach the Moon, or had even claimed to, these same people would have no trouble believing it.

The problem lies in the fact that government did it as part of a large, collective and non-profit endeavor. If a private entrepreneur had done it, they would find it admirable.

THE GOVERNMENT ALWAYS LIES.

That’s not true, but it lies often enough to make it arguable. Reality was collateral damage to other administrations. Now it is the pinpoint target.

To piss off liberals.

It is why they voted for and still support Trump.

With that goal in mind, everything wingnut makes sense while not making actual sense.

They even have a major news network to keep the entire program in place.

I don’t watch Fox because it pisses me off.

Therefore I am a liberal.

I can imagine these are the people who were unable to adapt their skills set to the digitalized age and now can only offer themselves as cheap, easily replaced labor or service personnel.

I think it’s more that employers hate hiring older workers, the economy had a downshift a few years ago that wiped out a lot of homeowners, and people who can’t get jobs still need to eat.

Older workers still recall a time when employees had certain rights and expectations to be treated with a modicum of human decency. That has been bred out of the latest generation of gig economy drones.

Greets and saluts from the Resistance in the NYC metro area. Another day, another endless supply of bullshit from the GOP and Trumpworld about how their tax scheme will help the middle class when everyone who is running the actual numbers knows that the middle class will get screwed because you need to know the math before you can say whether anyone who isn’t rich comes out ahead from these tax schemes.

The only ones to definitely come out with tax breaks are millionaires.

The owners of passthroughs come out like bandits - people including Trump.

Speaking of Trump, it turns out that he’s inflated his worth for years, and based on what little publicly available financial information is out there, he’s worth about 10% of what he’s long claimed. He’s still a billionaire, but his wealth and fortune are highly leveraged and he’s still going to profit from the passthrough cuts from 39% down to 25%.

So of course the Trumpworld talking heads come on the Sunday shows to claim that this helps middle class.

Something else for which I bless LGF: The absence of Moon landing deniers and other batshit conspira-liars. In contrast, every major RW site is infested with Moon hoax vermin, Free Republic, Redstate, Bretibart, etc. We know that there are still many lefty conspira-fools, of course, but the right is increasingly the natural home of the ignorant, the dishonest, and the gullible. Conspiracy claims are not forbidden here, their absence is just what happens when a rational person works hard for years on end to create a community of rational people.

I’ve noticed that those on the Right and those on the Left have specific, let’s say genres, of Conspiracy Theories. The Right has false flags to take away your guns, while the Left has anti-vaxxers to poison children. The Right has FEMA Camps to round up undesirables , while the left is afraid of The Handmaid’s Tale becoming reality.

Obviously there is some crossover, wing nuts will wing nut, Right or Left.

Already wrote that down in my notes. One major theme background with several different changes of images.

What does everyone think about using Rich Man Poor Man as the overall general theme and have that theme in all of the images even if only as a subtle background to keep a likeness to them all?

I wonder if Charles would want it associated with the blog???

I agree. That is why I am thinking of a series too. But one in general with all characters and just one big headline can work as long as it appears as one collective image.

I see I am going to be busy. But if this helps, then damnit…time well spent.

The LGF Research Division should set about making a primary list of who we should use - the most hated liberal icons of all - and find out their income or net worth, then using the R tax bill, figure how much money they’d end up making.

This is a really good idea, IMO. It sure would piss off the wingnuts.

And a suggestion - we should brand any graphics with the LGF logo. Might as well drive some more traffic for Charles while we’re at it

Yes, when I say “fewer images,” I just mean, “Don’t fill your meme up with dozens of images and pages of tiny unreadable text.” Dozens of images and pages of tiny unreadable text are how the wingnuts do memes. :)

Well, I always try to go with the old art college education of Dominant, Sub Dominant and accent learned in two-dimensional design. You have to have focus.

O’Neill added another post Saturday afternoon that said he apologized if he offended anyone, “particularly the wonderful women in my life.” In an interview Saturday with The Associated Press, he said he didn’t regret what he wrote and that he edited the original post and then deleted it after an online commenter called him insensitive for including information that could identify some of the women.

Sunday brought yet another apology.

“I am sorry,” he wrote. “I have damaged the national debate on the very real subject of sexual harassment, abuse and unfortunately rape. It is not a laughing matter.”

O’Neill said during Saturday’s interview that his message was misunderstood and that his civil rights history shows he’s not an “insensitive misogynist.” He said he wrote the original post because “the sensitive subject of sexual harassment” has led people to treat Franken and Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore, a Republican, “in the exact same fashion.”

Butthurt (Turkish butthurt, that is) incoming - brace yourselves.

The European Union will cut funds allocated to Turkey due to the “deteriorating situation in relation to democracy, rule of law and human rights” there, according to a European Parliament (EP) statement.

The bloc will shrink the so-called “pre-ascension funds” for Turkey by 105m euros ($124m) and suspend an additional 70m euros in the 2018 budget, the statement said on Saturday.

Ankara is entitled to receive 4.45 billion euros from the EU between 2014 and 2020 in the framework of the bloc’s “Instrument for Pre-accession Assistance”.

The Council of the EU and the EP, the two legislative institutions of the bloc, still need to formally approve the new budget.

“Concerning Turkey, MEPs made sure to cut pre-accession funds by 105 million euros (with a further €70 million in commitments put in reserve), as they consider the deteriorating situation in relation to democracy, rule of law and human rights worrying,” the statement by the EP said, referring to its members as MEPs.

Many of the EU member states have been in condemnation of the Turkish government’s arrests and purges of tens of thousands of people after a failed coup attempt in July 2016.

I don’t think he stands a chance in the Ohio governor’s race. There are much better candidates; Richard Cordray (not announced, but expected) and Betty Sutton (Ohio Rep in Sherrod Brown’s district and old job) to name two. There are many others to consider like my Congresswoman Joyce Beatty and former Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman should he give it a try.

All I know is Ohio needs to keep freaking Mike DeWine away from the seat and hopefully send the little ass to his retirement. And then there is John Husted…uggh.

I grew up 8 miles from Gettysburg. We’ve got three cats, and for each meal I split half a can of wet food between them (they also have bowls of dry food). On any given day, they’ll love the first half of the can and eat it all up, then turn their noses up at the second half. Or they’ll turn up their noses at the fresh canned food and then eat the second half of the can like it was the best food ever.

No rhyme, no reason. They’re cats.

The problem I have with Flanders Fields is that although it humanizes the dead soldiers

Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

the very next line tells the living to keep fighting what was the most useless, destructive war in history:

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch;

Once I studied WWI and its causes and outcomes, that part always bothered me.

He’s been a decent justice and has been low key and out of the news pretty much his whole career. I have no idea why all of a sudden he has gone bonkers and did this to himself. It’s an own-goal for sure.

I read somewhere that O’Neill said he wouldn’t even run if Cordray announced, so there’s that. I’m right there with you on keeping DeWine and Husted as far away from the governorship as possible.

You know, lately there has been very little mention of General Kelly…the man with the task. Is he still around? Has everyone figured out he is as bad as Trump? Or, has The Big Don kneecapped him to keep him out of the picture?

He was getting a lot of press…that is never good for Donny’s ego.

Remember how long ago the term ‘flame wars’ came about?

Facebook and Twitter make it more effective. Much bigger audience for people to get their dig/burn/flame/ seen.

Leave to government what is the government’s. Leave to business what is business.

Would that be better as: Leave to government what is of and for the people. Leave to business what is business.

And leave religion out of it completely.

Well
That was an adventure.
Did the reset but found out it borked my Eye-Fi X-2 cards and they are no longer supported. Couldn’t re-register them to get them working even locally.
Restored from an image, pre-emptively uninstalled Chrome Canary, Firefox 57 and Firefox ESR
Eye-Fi is back! New E-F Mobi cards were $70 each and I didn’t want to go there, most of my food pics are via cell camera and the PhotoSync app is what I use to get them to my NAS.
Still have a couple of year’s worth of cruft accumulation.
Making a new system image so I can get back to now in case of future rot.

I’m old enough to remember all the knuckleheads that thought it was a great idea to have businessmen run the government. Because they’re businessmen.

Businessmen can be counted on to run the business in the way that best enriches themselves, at the expense of stockholders/employees/retirees/even the long-term viability of the business.

This seems to be the newest GOP must-follow talking point. It started with Sarah Sanders Hucklebumble the other day and is now all they are saying.

Trump never admitted he touched anyone and Franken did. Franken is a criminal.

Plus the people (electoral college) elected Trump and knew of the allegations so he was exonerated.

Which of course is the same thing they are doing with Moore. Let Alabama decide if Roy is exonerated by the voters to represent Alabama and the GOP.

All those good Alabama Christians will be casting their votes stones.

Winning an election absolves you of criminality?

America has spoken. It’s OK for white, Republican, men to sexually assault women.

Detroit Local Powers First EV Charging Road in North America The road, about a mile from Local 58's hall, uses rubber-coated copper inductive-charging coils buried under the asphalt that transfer power to a receiver pad attached to a car's underbelly, much like how a phone can be charged wirelessly. ...
