Observations on the Trent Frank horrorshow:
1. VOMITING FOREVER.
2. Note the pre-emptive resignation came paired with critical omission of detail. Expect this in future.
3. This is a prime fucking example of how a culture of sexual “purity” and fetishization of reproduction as the value of women perfectly dovetails with predatory behavior. “Male” authority figures get to discount the autonomy of women—“consent” emanates from the nearest male authority figure, but what if you have “authority” because you have social and spiritual capital… (a dick is also a major part of this calculation). Not a coincidence. Entirely in sync with the way sex abuse plays out in churches, reparative therapy camps, et cetera et cetera et cetera.
4. That the proposition was framed in terms of reproduction doe not mean that (a) it isn’t a sexualized abuse of power, (b) that he wasn’t getting off on it. “Acquire permanent bond to woman by impregnating her” is standard, if horrifying, intersection of erotism and power. Foucaultian power/sex dystopia is definitely a fucking thing now.

6. STILL VOMITIING.

I held off on saying that. But I had a feeling it would come up so to say.
Lt. Gov. Tina Smith isn’t a done deal to replace Al Franken yet.
Gov. Mark Dayton said Friday morning that he will name a new U.S. senator “in a couple days” but declined to talk about who it might be.
“I won’t have any comments on it until I have an announcement to make, it will be in a couple days and that’s where I’m going to leave it for now,” Dayton told reporters Friday morning after he spoke at a Final Four-related event in Minneapolis.
Democratic sources have told the Star Tribune that Dayton’s most likely choice for the Senate seat is Lt. Gov. Tina Smith, a longtime DFL insider and trusted ally to Dayton. The idea is that Smith would hold the seat only until the end of 2018, and not run in next November’s special election to fill it. That would leave an open field that could draw names from both the Minnesota DFL and GOP.
But Dayton was unwilling to talk in depth about his thought process.
“I want someone who will be a great United States senator for Minnesota and there are a number of people who fit that bill,” Dayton said.If Dayton were to pick Smith, then a Republican state senator would become the new lieutenant governor. Sen. Michelle Fischbach of Paynesville, a 20-year veteran of the Legislature, currently holds the position of Senate president, which is first in the line of succession if the lieutenant governor quits.
Michelle Fischbach. Barf.

Think about it: Franken leaves, Dayton appoints Smith as his replacement, something happens to Dayton (IIRC, he’s already had some health scares in office) and he has to step down. Now, MN’s governorship has flipped from Democratic to Republican without a vote on the matter.

I wish you are right, OA: but I have a sinking feeling that the prospect of the “cleaning” that is (as I wholeheartedly agree) necessary in DC is going to be dealt with in the usual Republican manner, i.e.:
1. What dirt/smell?
2. Why do you keep bringing up this “Fake News” BS about dirt/smell?
3. The “Liberal Media” keeps bringing up these marginal dirt/smell issues - why do they hate America?
4. OK: even if the dirt issue is malodorous, it’s still fake, because Democrat X smells worse
5. Why won’t the “Liberal Media” call for the execution of Democrat X for [his/her] dirt/smell issues??
6. All this just goes to PROVE point 1( “what dirt/smell??”)
7. And the corollary to this all this is that Democrats/”Libruls” are Awful Enemies Of America - QED…..

I guarantee Moore was indeed the catalyst for Arpaio even considering a Senate run at this point. If a fellow lawless “law-and-order” type is still in the running for a Senate seat, even after all of what’s come out against him, then Arpaio must figure he’s still got a better-than-average shot himself.

Before Ronna Romney McDaniel took over as Republican National Committee chairwoman earlier this year, President Trump had a request: Would she be willing to stop using her middle name publicly?
Trump followed up by saying in a lighthearted way that McDaniel, the niece of Mitt Romney, could do what she wanted, according to two people familiar with the comments. But the change was soon plain for all to see. Though she had used her maiden name for years in Michigan, where her grandfather had been governor, McDaniel dropped “Romney” from most official party communications and has rarely used it since.
Trump’s White House essentially planned entire trip to Utah to keep Hatch in the race — and Romney out. And he asked RNC chairwoman Ronna McDaniel if she’d kindly keep Romney out of her name. https://t.co/jCJNjVyMSR

To those who basically said it’d be a cakewalk to fill Franken’s seat after frogmarching him out of the Senate, just because MN has a Dem governor, this is but one reason why a bunch of us disagreed.
Think about it: Franken leaves, Dayton appoints Smith as his replacement, something happens to Dayton (IIRC, he’s already had some health scares in office) and he has to step down. Now, MN’s governorship has flipped from Democratic to Republican without a vote on the matter.
Appointing Smith, who says she won’t run again, it just about the stupidest move the governor could make. Why are Democrats so dumb?

Here’s a companion story that went along with that earlier one I posted.
Tension between Minnesota, D.C. on how to fill Franken’s seat, sources say
On Wednesday night, high-ranking Minnesota Democratic sources said the governor was likely to appoint Lt. Gov. Tina Smith, someone who would not run for the seat permanently. That would give both parties equal time to mount campaigns for the historic election next November in which both Senate seats would be on the line.
A Washington political analyst who tracks the Senate said Franken’s decision to resign in a few weeks — rather than immediately — “really raised a lot of eyebrows around here today.”
Jennifer Duffy, senior editor at the Washington-based Cook Political Report, which provides nonpartisan political analysis, said Franken’s timing is generous to his staff, who are all likely to be out of work when he resigns, but also gives Dayton more time to settle on a replacement and hear from those with opinions on how to fill it.
She said top Senate Democratics like Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., would much rather have a replacement who can immediately begin campaigning and raising money. Ultimately, Dayton will decide which way to go.

Another batch of reasons to hate Taylor Swift, publicly financed stadiums, and the current state of the music and concert industry in general:
Minnesota fans’ mad love for Taylor Swift is turning into bad blood in some cases now that early tickets to her Sept. 1 U.S. Bank Stadium concert are on sale and causing widespread sticker shock.
Many die-hards and/or giving parents who got in on the singer’s Verified Fan pre-sale program — ostensibly a means to fight ticket scalpers — faced the dilemma of paying $795 or $447 for VIP packages with tickets in prime locations, or else $87-$153 plus fees for seats in the upper bowels of the 65,000-capacity stadium.
Just getting the first crack at buying Swift’s tickets cost a lot of time and energy. The singer’s Ticketmaster-generated Verified Fan program required several weeks of jumping through different hoops to get “boosted” to the front of the virtual line. Fans could earn boosts for buying her album in different formats, watching her videos, posting Swift-related selfies and handing over their mobile number to marketers.
After all that, the verified Swift fans were given a specific one-hour window to log on to buy tickets starting this week. And that’s when they first got a load of the complexities and prices.
“I guess my teenage girls are going to be disappointed,” said Lance Schwartz of Mankato, who was given a buying window Thursday night. Schwartz said he was unwilling to play the “silly games” and was left with the option of buying the $447-plus VIP package or paying $150 for “obstructed view seats.” He opted not to buy anything.
A fan who did play along and said she spent “hours upon hours” trying to get boosted in the Verified Fan program, Alyssa Pelish joined the chorus of complaints on Twitter about the results. “Wasn’t the idea of this so that ticket scalpers couldn’t do this to fans that have been there since the beginning?” Pelish tweeted as @AlyssaRelish, noting that the $795 “pit ticket” near the stage was half her monthly salary.
“And unless you’re shelling out $800, everywhere else in the stadium sounds awful,” tweeted Stefanie Deal (@StefDeal), referring to the new $1 billion Minneapolis football stadium’s reputation for bad acoustics.

Kozinski is a problem with a capital P. His former clerk, Heidi Bond (who writes romance novels under the pen name of Courtney Milan), had more to say on her website. I’d strongly advise people to read what she has to say, to understand what kind of an impact his behavior had on her mental and physical well-being.
This is hard, because Kozinski is an eloquent defender of the First Amendment, but when I read what Bond had to say, I wanted to weep tears of rage for her sake. I am trying to understand why men (and I’m sure women but for sure some men) do these things. It’s not necessary.

Mike Flynn Was Always a Fraud
Mike Flynn was never the savvy intelligence intellectual he pretended to be, which explains why his directorship at DIA was such a disaster. While a competent tactical intelligence guy, Flynn had no idea how the big game was played inside the Beltway, so he dropped the ball when he was let on the field. This also explains how Flynn seemed to have no idea that his calls to the Russian embassy might be intercepted by the FBI, an astonishing ignorance for a career intelligence officer. Then again, there’s a lot that Mike Flynn ought to have known but somehow didn’t.

I seriously question the provenance of the “bargaining position” quotation. It appears in many places on the web, but I’ve yet to see a specific work cited, the language is too modern for the Elizabethan era, and the measure bears no resemblance to Marlowe’s characteristic ringing iambic pentameter.

Actually I don’t think so. Trump has no loyalty to any party except himself. He aligns himself with the Republicans for two reasons only: Their priorities are such as will benefit him and his grotesque family, and Obama was a Democrat.
He really does not care about any supposed Republican values: religion, abortion, anti-environment, anti-global warming. The only true values he holds are that he is racist to the core and that he is authoritarian. He knew he could not run as a Democrat because his history of racism would not appeal to their core constituency. And Democrats tend to favor candidates who actually know something about issues.

It’s the argument the GOP spews, ignoring that there are these things called batteries that smooth power flow - allowing generation of power when the wind blows - using the excess to power batteries - and then use the batteries when wind is low. Same with solar.
So you’re saying my solar panels will still allow me to flip a light switch AT NIGHT!?!
Truly we live in a wondrous age.

I’ve been on the DL, not really here as often as I was. I’m always logged in. Just not at the keyboard. Hello to you Stanley. Hope all is well. My attitude has gone to shit, and I’d much rather not sit in my own fry pan. I sat here and typed, and then cleared a load of thoughts. Some days lighter, some days….

A suggestion to everyone: Keep this tweet. Remind yourself of how popular Trump is. Remind yourself that while we have a lot of work to do, there are a whole lot of people who do not like Trump.

Is anyone else watching The Crown on Netflix?
I’m reading that season 2 ep 1&2 have dropped, but all I see is season 1.
I’m so handicapped, cannot figure out.
I have other ways to watch them.

I know I’ve mentioned it before, but I got to play volleyball with Adrian a couple of times when he had games for musician/sound guys in a park near his home in Urbana, Il. Also saw him in a smaller venue in Bloomington, IN in the early ’90s—so great.

Last post before a new thread. Good! I’ll get to tell my stupid story again someday.

Marlowe is the great unknown of English theater. It is unfortunate that he spent more time spying than scribing…
“Hell hath no limits, nor is circumscribed In one self place, for where we are is hell, And where hell is there must we ever be. ” or “While money doesn’t buy love, it puts you in a great bargaining position.” or “O, thou art fairer than the evening air clad in the beauty of a thousand stars.”
Wow - that last one!

I and all of us I would guess, are your fellow travelers. If it’s not only the politics bugging you - BIG peace to you.
I may have missed it, but there was supposed to be a lizard meet up over music.

Yes. I missed it too. I was just curious. Seemed like a nice gig, hoped it went well.
Yes, this is an oasis. And I’m glad to have met the people I have spoke with here. Just my altruistic nature coming around to devour me. JFC. It never ends. Have a great evening Stanley, and it’s just nines. No Mistah. Or 09.
Thanks.
re: #340 nines09
Hey. How’d your MS casino gig go?
It went well, thanks for asking! The folks at the venue were very hospitable, the crowd was great, the food was amazing, the stage crew were total pros and made everything easy. They’re already talking about having us back in the Spring.
The only things I can complain about are the weather (hoped it would be warmer), and I got the full TSA treatment when I got back to New Orleans. Full pat-down, hand swab, the works. That kinda sucked after I got put into pre-scan on the way out of NY. That’s show biz, I guess.
And I have to work on traveling lighter as far as gear. I had to take a Line 6 Pod XT Live, and I wanted to just leave it in Gulfport. I’m thinking Santa might be bringing me a Tech21 Fly Rig for Christmas, though. That’ll come in handy for a string of Florida gigs I gotta do in January.
