(Also, Charles, fair warning here, I’ve been getting auto-play, auto-scroll ads running, banner-sized, at the bottom of the page all day, and because the controls are cut off, there’s literally no way to stop them, especially since they replay automatically too)
It almost seems quaint now when VP Spiro Agnew went around the country attacking the press as Nixon’s attack dog. Agnew: “In the United States today, we have more than our share of the nattering nabobs of negativism.” And then poof, “Agnew” was gone guilty of tax evasion. pic.twitter.com/ZevGEtY9oW

I brought up Rabbi Hillel yesterday too - mentioned that we Christians should remember the Go Study bit too. That Thich Nhat Hanh quote is good to remember. I was having my BP checked the other day and the nurse had me sit for a moment and then slowly deeply breath in my nose and out through my mouth. My reading was 128/80 - better than in years. She commented that if people breath calmly she gets a more accurate reading…

Attorney General Jeff Sessions is rescinding an Obama-era Justice Department letter that asked local courts across the country to be wary of slapping poor defendants with fines and fees to fill their jurisdictions’ coffers, part of a broad rollback of guidance that Sessions believes overreached, according to people familiar with the matter.
It’s the latest move in Sessions’s effort to dramatically reshape the Justice Department by undoing many of the reforms imposed by his predecessors and giving the institution a harder edge. Sessions is revoking 25 previous guidance documents dating back to the mid-1990s and covering everything from ATF procedures to the Americans With Disabilities Act.
The people who spoke to The Washington Post did so on the condition of anonymity; a formal announcement was expected later.

Sessions, who said he’d recuse himself from election related matters, is violating the recusal by ordering investigation of Uranium One and Clinton in a purely partisan political witch hunt to try and get Clinton despite all facts and evidence showing no crime, let alone wrongdoing, by anyone involved.
Also, one reason McMahon sold is that the WWE stock is at an extremely high price, way overvalued.

Way OT: I just set up an ebay account this week. So far I’ve spent $0 (I lost out on the item I’d signed up for), but that won’t last long (new grilles for my JBL L100s!).
I noticed that lots of buyers price things moderately but then add 70-80% for non-refundable shipping. It seems like a strategy to prevent people from just ‘sampling’ their goods, but it also seems like a rip-off if the item isn’t as advertised. Any opinions on whether I should just go by the sellers rating, or should I be wary of sellers with high shipping costs?
Had to set up a paypal account too. I’m assuming that they’re as secure as Amazon. Anything I should beware of?

One: I don’t get anything from anyone who charges more than actual cost for shipping.
Two: Do not trust PayPal. Especially do not directly connect your bank account to them - get a second, essentially a throwaway, to use with them because if they decide they’re right and you’re wrong, they will just seize money from your account.

AT&T’s “tax break” bonuses won’t be trickling down to everybody.
Hundreds of metro AT&T employees laid off just before Christmas
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — AT&T has announced layoff’s affecting people in five states, including Missouri.
Just days before Christmas, hundreds of people in the metro found out they will be out of jobs come Jan. 4.
On Dec. 16, the company announced a surplus affecting an estimated 600 employees in Illinois, Wisconsin, Missouri, Michigan, Indiana and Ohio. The workers affected are both indoor and outdoor technicians.

George Zimmer, Founder of Generation Tux and The Men’s Wearhouse:
The GOP Tax Bill Is A Giveaway To Millionaires Like Me
The tax bill currently set for a final vote in Congress will be a disaster for millions of hard-working American families. It’s true that some in the middle class are going to get a tax break over the next few years. But don’t be fooled. Those tax cuts expire, meaning that if you make less than $75,000 a year, you’re almost certainly going to be paying more in the long run. Tax cuts for people like me, who have significant income and wealth, will stay permanent.
I think I’ll pass on that Savile Row suit I fancied, get one of George’s instead, and give the extra dough to Democrats.

Even now when I need service they’re top notch and fun to talk to about AT&T. I’ve yet to meet one who isn’t completely disenchanted about the direction the company has gone in the last decade or so.

Ever since I was in college I knew a lot of conservatives who admired what Stalin did, eliminating political opponents, sending dissidents to the gulags, starved to death millions of poor peasant “kulaks,” invade neighboring countries and installing obedient puppet regimes. The only thing they hate about him is that he was a communist. If only he was a capitalist and American, he would have been the perfect Republican in their eyes.

I’m not surprised. I really think conservatives’ only objection to the USSR was its economic system not that it was authoritarian.

What I don’t like about it is that it feeds the narrative of “Establishment Dems cave to GOPers when it counts, fail to stand up for vulnerable people” and demoralizes key elements of the base - especially when it would’ve taken only 41 Dems to stop it! (not 100% sure of this, though)

This article has more details:
CHC member Rep. Luis Gutiérrez, D-Ill., said the caucus voted unanimously to march over to Schumer’s office for a meeting intended to galvanize support for DREAMers. Gutiérrez and Chairwoman Michelle Lujan Grisham, D-N.M., said they received a commitment from Schumer that additional Senate Democrats will vote against the CR but did not specify how many.
…
There are 48 members of the Democratic caucus, and just 41 of them were needed to block the measure, given Senate rules. But on Thursday evening, they fell nine short, with the bill advancing 66-32. A full 17 Democrats voted for the spending bill, including Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., the 2016 vice presidential nominee. (The full list is below.)That means the next fight over a government shutdown will come in the middle of January, as the funding bill keeps the government open until the 19th.
