The Rob Porter Scandal Gets Worse: The FBI Warned the White House 3 Times About Him

Politics • Views: 35,195

It’s almost comical how badly the Trump administration has handled the Rob Porter situation. Their spokespeople are all over the media with blatantly conflicting statements, some condemning Porter while Trump and others praise him.

But the worst part of it is that FBI Director Christopher Wray has now testified that they told the White House about Porter’s issues that prevented him from getting a security clearance not once, not twice, but three times.

The White House should have known for months that Porter wouldn’t receive clearance for some more time because, at least in part, of these accusations. And even after photographs of one of Porter’s ex-wives were published showing her with a black eye, the White House tried to defend Porter to the media.

In testimony before a Senate subcommittee on Tuesday, FBI Director Christopher A. Wray explained the timeline of the FBI’s background check into Porter.

Wray:

“What I can tell you is that the FBI submitted a partial report on the investigation in question in March, and then a completed background investigation in late July, that is — soon thereafter we received requests for follow-up inquiry, and we did the follow-up, and provided that information in November. And then we administratively closed the file in January. And then earlier this month we received some additional information and we passed that on as well.”

That’s just the FBI’s sharing of information with the White House, which was fully completed — following two previous reports — in November. We know, too, that there were other ways in which the White House could have been or was informed about the abuse accusations.

Here’s the thing, in a normal situation, that first partial report in March would have probably been the final report. The Staff Secretary is supposed to have code word clearance because they basically see everything. There’s no way any other administration would have been allowed to have someone in that position for six months, let alone a year without full clearance.

Forget “what did the president know and when did he know it?” the question for this administration is: What does the president have to hide?

5
Targetpractice  Feb 13, 2018 • 11:57:06am

And yet not only was Porter bucking for promotion, the WH was “in talks” about giving him one to Deputy Chief of Staff right up until the photographs were published. In other words, they knew there was no chance Porter was going to get the security clearance necessary to handle top secret information, but were looking to put it in his hands regardless.

March:

“Here’s our preliminary report, showing that Mr. Porter is ineligible for a security clearance on account of his susceptibility to blackmail.”

“We’ll wait for the final report.”

July:

“We now have our final report and the conclusions in the preliminary report stand.”

“Could you follow-up on some questions we have about this report?”

November:

“Here’s the follow-up report that you requested.”

“Thanks, we’ll take this under advisement.”

January:

“We’re closing our file on Mr. Porter, he will not be receiving a security clearance once his temporary one expires.”

“Ho-hum.”

February:

“HOW DARE THE FBI DRAG OUT THIS BACKGROUND CHECK AND NOT INFORM US?!”

So at this point, every time that Porter was allowed to see classified materials after his temporary clearance expired could be potentially prosecutable as a separate offense. Any White House staff that shared classified materials with him could be charged. That’s up to and including Trump himself.

No wonder they’re spinning like a damned dynamo, there’s every chance that one or more of them could go to jail for covering for Porter.

LoopX Startup Pulls ICO Exit Scam and Disappears with $4.5 Million

A cryptocurrency startup named LoopX has pulled an exit scam after collecting around $4.5 million from users during an ICO (Initial Coin Offering) held for the past weeks.

The LoopX team disappeared out of the blue at the start of the week when it took down its website and deleted its Facebook, Telegram, and YouTube channels without any explanation.

The company’s former Twitter profile now lists only one tweet, a link to a TheNextWeb article detailing the exit scam, but it is unclear if the LoopX team posted this link themselves, or if somebody else claimed the account name after it was vacated.

So this morning, they were accusing the FBI of dragging their feet on the background check.

By lunch, the FBI Director has testified on live TV that the White House knew as early as last March that Porter wasn’t going to be receiving a security clearance.

And we’ve not even at dinner and already they’re bullshitting us into believing that nothing Wray said today changed their version of events.

They’re not even on speaking terms with reality.

In the lie about any/everything universe, of course. Although we know Wray revealed the lies Sanders, Trump, and Kelly have been pushing about Porter, they still think we’re stupid. Wray’s testimony did not align in any way with any of the lies Trump and other WH officials have been telling. B*st*rds got blown out of the water by Wray and are doing everything they can to avoid accepting responsibility for having allowed Porter to handle classified material when he wasn’t supposed to. If I could, I’d curse all of their *sses out, including Trump. I’m just that disgusted with them and their endless stream of lies.

OT from downstairs: HFCS vs other sugars. It appears that HFCS is actually digested differently from other sugars. I don’t know the implications of this.

From Dr. Mark Hyman MD through our friend Google:

Regular cane sugar (sucrose) is made of two sugar molecules bound tightly together — glucose and fructose in equal amounts. The enzymes in your digestive tract must break down the sucrose into glucose and fructose, which are then absorbed into the body.

High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) consists of glucose and fructose, not in a 50-50 ratio, but a 55-45 fructose to glucose ratio in an unbound form. Since there is there is no chemical bond between them, no digestion is required so they are more rapidly absorbed into your bloodstream.

Korean money lenders traditionally charged interest rates of that order, until the Korean War. In his classic history, This Kind of War, TR Fehrenbach recounts that when the North Korean army moved into a new area during their initial offensive, they would round up and sort all the local regime tools and enemies of the people. The suspects were screened and those who seemed likely to be useful tools for the new regime; police officers, administrators, even some priests; were spared and sent back to work. There was one exception: Bankers and moneylenders were shot without exception. This made the Inmun Gun, the North Korean army, very popular with the peasants, at least until they started confiscating food and drafting people at gunpoint. South Korean officials took note after these areas were liberated and began instituting strict banking and usury laws.

Hmmm. Is this how it works?

Clearances are a statement of trust. They give one part of the permission to see specific data. (The other part is generally a good reason to see it. Aka “Need to Know’ )

The originating agency/Department owns the data and, in theory, has a big say over who gets to see it. They do this by giving the data a security classification.

Sounds like DHS via FBI vets White House clearances rather than DoD.

The White House consumes data from all Executive Departments. The perceived trust levels may dictate what data is shared by the originating organization. Either formally, or informally.

The executive is in charge of who gets to see what. They could grant Putin access and, unless the GOP acts, there’s nothing we can do right now except protest.

In the dystopian novel I will write someday, Trump crashes the economy, Putin offers to to bail us out, and in gratitude, Trump lets the Russians install commissars to oversee economic recovery on federal, state, and local levels. Things devolve from there.

That would seem to be less of a dystopia than continued Republican misrule in the US.

I think that overstates the difference between sucrose and HFCS.

My take on sucrose vs HFCS is that the latter is cheaper, and as a consequence gets put in fucking EVERYTHING, even where you wouldn’t expect it. It’s not that it’s bad for you, or at least not inherently. It’s just that there’s so much of it in everything and we’re so much less active these days that it makes it easier to overconsume calories.

Remember what the “C” in HFCS stands for… corn subsidy politics probably play a role in it’s use.

It’s not used just for sweetening; HFCS is a preservative, so it gets added to things that are already plenty sweet enough, and things that they have to add extra salt to keep it from getting too sweet.

Yep…and a trick I learned at the motel I helped do maintenance, etc. while in high school. If you have a wet spot in carpet or on a mattress and the like, sprinkle it on the spot and it will wick up the moisture fast. Let it dry a bit and then vacuum it off.

Malaysian newspaper publishes ‘how to spot a gay’ checklist

A leading Malaysian newspaper has published a list of pointers for identifying potential gay and lesbian people, drawing anger from activists who said lives were being put at risk.

The article in Sinar Harian featured bullet points of supposedly distinctive qualities that revealed LGBT people. They stated that gay men were easy to identify because of their love of beards, going to the gym - not for exercise but to check out other men - and branded clothing. Their eyes light up when they see handsome men, the article said.

The stand-out attributes for lesbians were that they tend to hug each other, hold hands and belittle men, according to the newspaper.

Absolutely the loudest band I ever heard in my life. They get overlooked quite a bit but live they just kicked ass.

I remember a review (in Rolling Stone, I think) that described them live as ‘the world’s loudest transistor radio.’ I saw them at The Spectrum, and my ears are still ringing. Great show, though.

“…Here’s how the program would work: Imagine a woman named Mary Turner, who lives in Wheeling, West Virginia. She was recently laid off from a chicken-processing plant and makes ends meet by walking and taking care of her neighbors’ pets. Mary could expand her little business by hiring some workers, but no one in the area would accept a wage she can afford. Mary goes online—to a new kind of international gig economy website, a Fiverr for immigrants—and applies to sponsor a migrant. She enters information about what she needs: someone with rudimentary English skills, no criminal record and an affection for animals. She offers a room in her basement, meals and $5 an hour. (Sponsors under this program would be exempt from paying minimum wage.)

I think we have that program already, but the maids locked inside the house for years and paid nothing keep escaping.

This part, I find interesting:

Many people will worry that the Sofias of the world would be exploited by their sponsors. But all health and safety laws would apply to them, and periodic inspections could be undertaken (as exist for the J-1 au pair program, where admittedly occasional exploitation also occurs). Yes, Mary would be able to pay Sofia less than the minimum wage, but even at $5 an hour, Sofia would earn many times what she earns on a farm in Paraguay. Sofia would be free to leave at any time if she did not like the conditions of her employment. Effectively, this system allows the benefits of exchange in international labor that are permitted by online labor markets like Fiverr and Amazon Mechanical Turk to extend to a much broader range of tasks that need to be done in person, from dog walking to construction work.

Does that include things like Social Security and Workers’ Comp?

And if she’s free to leave, is she free to stay? Can she get another job on the same program? Or is she immediately subject to deportation?

Oh, and will the room and board provided be considered income for tax purposes? In which case, that $5 becomes much less.

Since I brought it up, I looked. Heathkit it seems. Some show dual Heathkit, which would explain the octavia. Carefully cascaded fuzz into fuzz… Like using one as a boost or lead.
I always said a Fender was a Marshall short a few carefully arranged pedals.
And the West amps were like PA amps. Pure. Unadulterated. Headroom.
Like Fender Twins and Pro Reverbs, the point of breakup/distortion is death.

You probably already know it, but Jim Marshall used a Fender Bassman as his starting point. I think he used a different transformer and tubes to make the first Marshall 100.

I just picked up the 50 Year - The Who - Official History book at the library Friday. There are some good images in it of the early Marshall. You can tell they look almost handmade and had little plastic plates on the front with very straight Marshall lettering. I think Pete was his first customer.

Grrrr. I tried three times to see those guys. They cancelled each time. When they finally played a show I had a ticket to, I couldn’t go as I had just started a summer job that was 10PM to 6AM. Still pissed about that. One of the bands I wanted to see.

I never got to see them with Blackmore, believe it or not. I did get to see them with Steve Morse a few years back.

I used to see Blackmore all the time, back when my knees still worked and I played soccer badly. He used to have Sunday afternoon pickup games at a local high school, and most of his band and crew would show up a lot.

It was kind of a prerequisite to getting into his bands, you had to play soccer. A friend of mine missed the Rainbow gig because he didn’t play.

Yeah, but you had to build it.

The other guitar player in a really early band of mine was really into the Heathkit (and Lafayette) kit stuff, along with his dad. He had a Heath amp and fuzz, and his old man actually built one of those home organs. In retrospect, I think they were both a little nuts.

Oh, I know all about Heathkits! I remember their old catalogs. My one brother and my father loved electronics and they were always thinking of building something from Heathkit.

For pretty much all of the ‘16 campaign from the moment Hillary’s email server became public knowledge to the moment she lost, pundits moaned about how we could trust a president who’d “mishandled” classified documents with a security clearance.

The answer now seems to be “Trust isn’t an issue, she’s the president and you have no fucking say in the matter.”

I think it is simpler than that. The Republican ideal justice system is simply:

1) Republicans are always innocent
2) Democrats are always guilty.

That entirely removes any reference to facts or reality, which so often vex conservatives by not agreeing with what they want to believe.

Kushner has added millions in debt since joining White House

An update to Ivanka Trump’s financial disclosure report reveals that she and her husband, Jared Kushner, have taken out millions of dollars in additional debt over the past year, Politico reported Tuesday.

Trump’s updated disclosure form shows that Kushner appears to have tapped three different lines of credit since he began working at the White House.

The changes up the couple’s debts from a range of $19 million to $98 million to being valued at between $31 million and $155 million, according to Politico.

Trump had initially reported the debts to be at the same levels Kushner had reported in March, but revised the form in December to show higher levels on the three credit lines.

So of course he should have access to top secret information. We can trust him, right?

Damn it, I remember so well my years in New York, when the Times was simply part of every day (and yes, on Sundays my lady and I did the stereotypical New York thing, with bagels and lox, bloody marys, and the NYT). I bought the paper from the newstand on the corner of 6th and 16th, where an old newsie named Barney was a neighborhood institution. Barney was also an old-time soft-shoe dancer who gave lessons, and as a sideline he made trips every few months to the Old Sod to deliver money and, I suspect, other items to a well-known and well-loved (at least in New York) terrorist organization.

That was a long time ago. Barney is no more. And as far as I can tell, the same can be said for the New York Times.

Indies and Republican defections.

Add some GOTV to that mix and the midterms will be a bloodbath.

Fux Noise has a new talking point: There WERE meetings with the Russians, but they were perfectly OK meetings with Russians.

There were meetings before he won the election. There was no incoming nsa yet.

Speaking of amps, my 13yo found my “Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out” and has fallen in love with “Midnight Rambler.” We were listening together in the car a bit ago. Forgot how much I love that Keith-into-Ampeg sound.

Smack in the middle of the only period of the Rolling Stones I really like. Beggars Banquet to Exile on Main Street. Nothing better from them before or since.

(But then, I’m a Who fan so what do I know? Give him a copy of the 2001 (or more recent) rerelease of Live At Leeds with the full performance of Tommy for a hella good time)

Tomorrow maybe.

Cohn famously almost quit after Trump’s disastrous response to the Charlottesville nazi rally and murder of Heather Heyer. Rumor was he stayed on because he desperately wanted to replace Janet Yellen as Fed Chair, a job that Trump passed him over for out of retribution for his perceived disloyalty. If Cohn does replace Kelly he’ll be just like Priebus, disrespected by everyone, never empowered and deliberately set up to fail.

I am assuming that 39% of the turnout in this election were registered Democrats, which is not at all the same thing as only 39% of the registered Democrats showing up to vote.

I’ll second that. Live at Leeds may be the greatest live album of all time.

Live at Leeds sounds good. He got Tommy for Christmas. I’ve been loving it.
