The funny thing about the Malcolm/ Frank Marshall Davis CT was it that it would make birtherism moot. Then again I remember Pam trying to claim children of unwed parents don’t count as eligible.

The Frank Marshall Davis “theory” is the only one that actually made logical sense. (He knew Obama’s family. It would have been scandalous for his mother to have a child by a much older man so they passed it off as her African classmate’s).
But, as you say, that would not have affected Obama’s eligibility one bit.
Also, for fuck’s sake, he looks noting like Davis!

And then there was the wacky theory that Davis seduced young Obama. But at least with Davis, they actually knew each other. I don’t even know if Malcolm X visited Hawaii. It was all disgusting though, attacking Obama’s deceased mother who from all accounts was an incredible woman & mother who died too young.

I believe (and I am not going back to read that long, rambling, insane post. So we’ll just have to rely on my memory) that the idea was they hooked up when she was studying in Washington State.
The same idea, by the way, was used to claim Obama was really Jimi Hendrix’s kid. We know that isn’t true, because if it was…Obama would have told everyone.

wwiii is already underway

A war that began with peaceful protests against President Bashar al-Assad is rapidly descending into a global scramble for control over what remains of the broken country of Syria, risking a wider conflict.

Under skies crowded by the warplanes of half a dozen countries, an assortment of factions backed by rival powers are battling one another in a dizzying array of combinations. Allies on one battlefront are foes on another. The United States, Russia, Turkey and Iran have troops on the ground, and they are increasingly colliding.

In the space of a single week last week, Russia, Turkey, Iran and Israel lost aircraft to hostile fire. The United States, meanwhile, has been battling for days to hold back Iranian-supported Syrian tribal militias in the eastern desert, drawing U.S. forces closer toward entanglement in Syria’s conflict.

The article at the Post starts:

White House counselor Kellyanne Conway said Sunday that she has no reason not to believe statements that Jennifer Willoughby and I have made about our ex-husband, former White House aide Rob Porter. I actually appreciated her saying that she at least did not not believe us.

But I was dismayed when Conway, appearing on CNN’s “State of the Union,” went on to say that she does not fear for White House Communications Director Hope Hicks, who has reportedly been dating Porter. “I’ve rarely met somebody so strong with such excellent instincts and loyalty and smarts.”

Borrowing Conway’s words, I have no reason not to believe her when she says that Hicks is a strong woman. But her statement implies that those who have been in abusive relationships are not strong.

Why Do So Many Young Americans Misunderstand Vaccination?

Since the end of December, 114 people from seven states have been reported to have measles, part of an ongoing outbreak that originated at California’s Disneyland theme park. The outbreak came at the tail of a record-setting 2014, when the Centers for Disease Control and Submission (CDC) recorded 644 cases of measles across 27 states, the highest since the disease was declared eliminated from the United States in 2000.

This program sounds great to bureaucrats whose buddies in the food industry will be able to dump their unwanted products into a “food box” for the poors. But all you’re going to end up with is a lot food getting dumped in the trash because not everybody is going to love whatever a bean-counter in D.C. says should go in the box.

To conservatives this is completely consistent. In one instance it is about the government telling you how you can spend your own money, and in the other it is how the government is going to spend money they seized from you. The poor folks at the other end hardly factor in to the equation at all.

GOP official resigns in Michigan: I could ‘no longer remain silent’ about Trump

The chairman of the Republican Party in Bay County, Mich., announced last week he was resigning from his position, saying he could “no longer remain silent” about President Trump.

“I have not seen a leader, I’ve only seen more of the same,” Brandon DeFrain, who has served in his post since 2014, wrote in a Facebook post, according to MLive.

He said he has seen more racism in the streets, on social media and in schools and more hatred between family members.

“I’m tired of attempting to defend a machine that does not defend the people I love,” he wrote. DeFrain said he hasn’t talked much about the current state of political affairs in the past because he “believed in giving our leaders a chance.”

Well, this is just bog-standard 21st-Century Republicanism [attempting to be enacted into] in action: “freedom of choice” is a fine concept when it comes to spending one’s own money (mostly), but when it’s the government’s dime, all standards no longer apply, and “welfare bums” ought to just accept what they get - and don’t get a say in any of it.

It’s in line with stuff I read a while back about other great Republican notions (mainly from State governments they control) like how “welfare recipients” ought not to be able to vote as long as they receive any form of direct government aid: demonizing the poor is GOP-standard stuff: if they thought they could get away with it, they would criminalize them as well.

Conservatism is a sham, reason #4778424

On that note, remember this article that was shared here last night?

For Trump supporters, rejecting him would mean rejecting their own values

In the “communion mode” authority structure…people’s recognition of legitimate authority is “based on an appeal to common values and creeds.”

“In this mode,” added Gray, “the legitimacy for actions lies in consistency with the understandings, protocols, and guiding values of shared frames of reference.”

Compare that to the contractual mode, which is based an agreement that sets out obligations and rewards, or “command mode,” which Gray said, “is based on the rule of law emanating from a sovereign body and delivered through a scalar chain of superior and subordinate authority.”

Significantly, researchers have also found that religious communion authority followers make contributions as a show of their values rather than to affect any consequence.

So, in this SNAP case, the “values” being celebrated are durr hurr, punish teh lazy brown moochers!!!!11! and bootstraps!!11!! Even the wingnuts on SNAP themselves will enthusiastically support this move, since it’s an appeal to their sick and twisted “values.”

Another crucial takeaway, particularly from the section I bolded on “contractual mode” - that’s what the Dem base and lean-Dem voters operate on, and it’s why their election turnout tends to be so abysmally miserable -_- If they perceive Dem politicians as reneging on a promise, or failing to live up to a principle, they’ll stay home. Compare this to GOPers who only care about whether or not someone says the magick words, recites the right shibboleths, and justifies their bigotry and hate.

Actually, the big loser might be Walmart—SNAP keeps their grocery section floating.

Let’s not ignore the fact that no government agency will actually be established, or tasked to collect and deliver goods. It will be contracted out.
Walmart is more poised to be able to lock down state contracts to deliver goods at an “approved” schedule. They already offer free two-day delivery of stable goods orders of $35 or more. They would need to develop a more local infrastructure for perishable goods. But, they likely have a better price point to still find profit in such a setup.

Not sure if they truly believe that. Some might, but I suspect others are aware on some level that it is a lie they tell themselves in order to justify greed and hatred of other people. That’s Ayn Rand’s great gift to modern day authoritarians - attempting to morally justify greed and oppressing others. In the past, we told ourselves it was the will of God, or the result of superior bloodlines. Nowadays we have Objectivism. But the purpose is the same - enabling small-minded, greedy people who enjoy cruelty to pretend that their evil is their right.

That’s the philosophy that the modern day Republicans are all in on. And that’s the philosophy that FOX teaches its believers.

Their thinking on all of this stuff is to drive people off social help any way they can. If funky food, medical care and other forms of hidden punishments makes people go out and take the jobs the people “the walls*” block from entering the country then America Will Be Great Again. So it is written in The Great God Book of Conservatism - 21st Century Evangelical Addition.

*The Walls - all of the Trump efforts to stop people of color coming to America. The people that take the low paying jobs like farm, construction, low service labor, etc. to get up and going. Cutting additional family also harms the immigrants that many times rely on extended families to help build lives in America by sharing living expenses, combining money to buy homes, cars, etc.

And in December, he dismissed the former director of communications for the Office of Public Liaison, Omarosa Manigault, who had been using the White House car service — known as “CARPET” — as an office pick-up and drop-off service, something strictly forbidden by the federal government, according to three administration officials.

After Kelly dismissed her, Manigault tried to storm the White House residence to appeal to Trump, according to one of the officials, accidentally tripping an electronic Secret Service wire that monitors entry and egress from the residence.

The White House did not respond to a request for comment about Manigault’s departure.

I’m guessing she would still be employed if she was a White male.

Think of it as Blue Apron for food stamp recipients.

That’s how Budget Director Mick Mulvaney described the Trump administration’s proposal to replace nearly half of poor Americans’ monthly cash benefits with a box of food

from some article somewhere - maybe a year or two old

Blue Apron has two plans: a 2-person and a 4-person subscription, both with 3 meals per week. The 2-person plan is $59.94 per week ($9.99 per person) while the family plan is $139.84 per week ($8.74 per person). Hello Fresh costs a bit more, again with 2-person and 4-person subscription options and 3 meals per week

snap benefits are how much?

Some may carp, but I see this SNAP/food plan as pretty inspiring.

I’m hoping the wingies follow up by making 25% of Social Security benefits payable in Velveeta and Spam.

Or with Medicare, every fourth visit to the doctor, you get handed a bottle of Ibuprofen at the registration desk, no matter what, that’s it, see ya next month.

The possibilities are endless.

William Lewis  Feb 13, 2018 • 8:27:28am

Oh, SNAP…
I see they’re bound and determined to ratfuck this program too. And what we are already allowed to buy with our EBT cards isn’t much better.

Soda: expensive flavored high-fructose corn syryp & water.

Chips: expensive flavored corn flour, hfcs & salt. I mean, when plain potato chips (potato, oil & salt) are the healthy food in a purchase, there’s already something wrong.

You can buy a frozen pizza but if we bake that exact same pizza first? Nope. Not allowed. Because it’s “Hot” rather than cooked by the stay at home mom that was already becoming a fantasy when Food Stamps started in the 60’s.

I’d rather see someone be able to buy a cooked pizza and feed the family something fairly nutritious than yet more chips and soda. But then the big food biz doesn’t get enough of the cut; not enough nasty corn sugar gets in the diet to make us fatter…

I’d almost be tempted to run against Sean Duffy on a platform of banning HFCS for human consumption.

Trump budget to shut down all satellite monitoring of the planet.

Among the items targeted for elimination is the Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope, or WFIRST. The plan was to build this using the optical hardware of a spy satellite that was donated by the intelligence community. Once in orbit, it would scan the entire infrared sky using a wide-field lens, allowing large catalogs of different objects, including near-Earth asteroids, to be generated. The budget document more or less says that NASA is getting the James Webb Telescope and shouldn’t expect another so soon: “developing another large space telescope immediately after completing the $8.8 billion James Webb Space Telescope is not a priority for the Administration.”

Don’t tell them about Spitzer and Chandra.

If you think it’s only a joke to suggest that the Trump administration would terminate an active observatory once we’ve gone through the expense of putting it in orbit, well, then you haven’t read the rest of the budget proposal, which attempts to follow through on earlier threats to gut NASA’s Earth-observing missions. Two are not yet launched. One is a satellite called CLARREO pathfinder, which is intended to develop instruments for a follow-on satellite to produce detailed climate records. Another, PACE, would track ocean-atmosphere interactions. Two other satellites would have specific instruments shut down—one of them an Earth-observing camera championed by Al Gore that has been targeted by every Republican administration since he left the vice presidency (the Bush administration shelved the working hardware rather than put it in orbit).

But the most striking thing is the call to shut down the Orbiting Carbon Observatory, which has only been in operation for less than four years. The ability to monitor Earths’ carbon dioxide fluxes was considered so important for following climate change that NASA built a second after the first was lost in a launch accident. The Trump administration would now shut it down.

And tying in with Trump’s contempt for anything regarding climate, the liberal media is doing its part too.

TV Networks Did A Really Crap Job Reporting On Climate Change Last Year

The group Media Matters for America analyzed climate change coverage on major broadcasters’ nightly news programs and Sunday morning political shows ― including those on ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox News and PBS ― over the course of 2017. While a total of 260 minutes were devoted to climate change during the year, almost all of that coverage (79 percent) related to actions taken by the Trump administration rather than explanatory reports about the phenomenon or the way it affects humans or extreme weather.

Often networks used talking points furthered by climate change deniers (including President Donald Trump) without refuting such claims or clarifying that an overwhelming majority of scientists believe that climate change is happening and that humans are the primary cause. Trump has notably called global warming a hoax manufactured by the Chinese.

“Broadcast TV news neglected many critical climate change stories in 2017 while devoting most of its climate coverage to President Donald Trump,” Media Matters said in its report. “The networks undercovered or ignored the ways that climate change had real-life impacts on people, the economy, national security, and the year’s extreme weather events ― a major oversight in a year when weather disasters killed hundreds of Americans, displaced hundreds of thousands more, and cost the economy in excess of $300 billion.”

Trump should love the media. They did all they could to get him elected and now they’re in lockstep with him about one of the thousands of things he really hates.

I spent several years of my life building, aligning and calibrating a major portion of the spectrometer on both OCO missions, plus a third back-up instrument that might be mounted on the ISS. Shortly after my retirement, I stood outside in the early AM, and watched OCO-2 head for orbit from Vandenberg.

I know people keep saying that but the cut over to HFCS from beet/cane coincides with the rise in obesity. If only one thing - the source of the “sugar” - has changed, why then has the result changed? I find this extremely difficult to believe given what we know about big biz and tobacco vs health and oil/co2/global warming.

We also started using a lot of antibiotics in young livestock to make them bigger. I’ve heard arguments that’s also what contributed to it. But, the cheaper HFCS has made this stuff easier to buy.

Meanwhile, a Slovak court has definitively ruled that the outgoing (and soon to be incoming) Prime Minister here in the Czech Republic - Andrej Babiš - was in fact an agent for the StB (the Communist Czechoslovak version of the KGB) known as “Bureš”. Technically, he’s not allowed to be in the government……but the President here, Miloš Zeman, well, he don’t give two shits about the law or silly things like that.

And there’s really nothing anyone can do about it. Babiš heads the largest political party in the country.

As a friend of mine just sarcastically pointed out, “Great. We now have a completely illegitimate and unconstitutional government. And everyone cheers.”

I think another thing that happened about the same time was the big scare about fats. Everyone then cut fats in their snack and convenience foods but to make them taste decent they upped the sugars. Of course using a less expensive form of sweeteners allowed for better profits so HFCS’s were used.

Ever since we all started to worry about cholesterol from the wrong fats we have as a society gotten fatter.

And I am not saying certain forms of cholesterol from fats are not bad. I think the processed food industry answered the problems in the wrong ways due to profit over healthy quality.

Nor should it. But in light of these revelations, I think the DNC’s angle should change. Emphasize the danger that Porter presented to our national security by being at risk of blackmail. If Republicans respond by arguing that there’s no proof he was ever blackmailed, bring up all the arguments they made 2015-2016 about how even if Hillary’s emails hadn’t been hacked, the fact that she had a secret server left her open to blackmail by foreign agents and thus she couldn’t be trusted with classified material.

Greets and saluts from the Resistance in the NYC metro area.

The infrastructure scam Trump released yesterday (along with his budget) fell to the sound of a dull thud.

Infrastructure experts and people who follow this stuff panned it exactly as I’ve been saying for weeks - that it’s vaporware. Others have pointed out that it actually cuts federal spending and is based on hopes that the private sector and states/localities will make up the balance - $1.3 trillion over 10 years.

The reason we’re in this mess is that the states/localities don’t have that kind of money, and private entities aren’t going to be spending their money either. They would much rather get something for nothing and then charge the public for it, and that’s part of what this scam is set to do. It’s Trump looking to sell off assets to low bidder who can then turn around and gouge consumers.

It’s a recipe for disaster, and it doesn’t even pass the smell test. Yet media outlets continue to spin this as a $1.5 trillion plan. It barely qualifies as a $200 billion plan over 10 years, which is lower level of funding than under current law.

And all that is quickly overshadowed by the fact that Trump’s budget is draconian in gutting Medicaid, health coverage, and the safety net. In fact, Trump’s looking to eviscerate SNAP and demand that half of the program be devoted to the feds shipping nonperishables to SNAP recipients instead of letting those folks have the choice of how to spend the money.

SNAP is one of the most cost effective programs out there - where each dollar of the program generates about $1.60 of economic activity.* [edited - this is actually understating the economic activity - according to a study, it’s closer to $1.84]

So of course Trump and his right wing cabal of cronies think this should be changed.

Everything Trump’s doing is about shredding the function of the federal government. His supporters are fine with that, even though they don’t understand that they’re losing on the deal. They think this will somehow benefit them.

It doesn’t. It never does. It benefits millionaires who’ll see lower tax bills and bigger bank accounts, while everyone else gets the burdens. This is the ultimate expression of trickle down, where the GOP decides that the tax cuts that don’t generate the revenues they claim it would have to be offset by deep cuts to the discretionary budget.

i am back from directv hell in like record time

my mom got switched from uverse (with which she was very happy) to directv last month - i think bait and switched (she’s 90)

nevertheless — they could never make it work. constantly dropped signal, and other problems. we spent 3 weeks trying to make it work.
more than 10 phone calls sometimes being transferred and speaking to 6 or 8 people

saturday, after a 6 hour service call with no results the box stopped working altogether - some code that it’s not authorized.

we spent three days on the phone trying to get it authorized. - no joy.

i finally called at&t loyalty. i had a sheaf of notes.
i said put back uverse the way it was a month ago, take this crap out.

they did.
NO disconnect or early termination fees
promo rates on the uverse for a year
no installation fees
a new $200 gift card and they said keep the $200 gift card from the directv

at&t retention department. nice, smart people.

Since the law came that says you have to list what’s in there, in descending order of volume, sugar has developed many names, each of which can be listed separately. Antipodal Lizards will be interested:Professor gives student 0 for listing Australia as a country

MANCHESTER, NH (WMUR/Buzzfeed/CNN) - An adjunct professor at Southern New Hampshire University has been replaced after giving a student a failing grade because she classified Australia as a country for an assignment.

It all began with student Ashley Arnold, who shared her ordeal with the online site, Buzzfeed. The Idaho resident was completing her sociology degree online, tasked with an assignment to compare a foreign country with the U.S.

She chose Australia.

When she got her grade back, it was a zero. The professor argued Australia was not a real country, but a continent.

Australia is a country, but it’s also a continent. But why is it both? Its reasoning can be a head-scratcher.

Australia, as a continent, includes Tasmania, New Guinea, Seram, Timor and the Commonwealth of Australia. Why? Because they all share the same tectonic plates.

What bothers me about this story is that so many people apparently have trouble understanding the concept of Australia being both a continent and a country. The Idiocracy is truly here.

“…The Trump administration is, needless to say, a target-rich environment. That can be a mixed blessing. Former Trump campaign CEO and senior adviser Steve Bannon recently told Bloomberg’s Michael Lewis: “The Democrats don’t matter. The real opposition is the media. And the way to deal with them is to flood the zone with shit.”

This would work if the media was still playing it straight. But since they’ve basically gone to “White House lies about [issue of the day]”, I’m not entirely sure that’s going to work anymore.
