Comment carried over from ‘mouse’s link to the story that “outed” Amy Mek at the end of last thread:
Just read the linked Amy Mek story. I thought some of that sounded familiar. When I saw the killer’s name it hit me.
The “stripper” that was mentioned in the article that was killed by Paul Cortez, Catherine Woods, was the daughter of the former director of the Ohio State University marching band. So, it was big news at OSU and around Columbus.
She had the classic dreams of going to New York to work as a dancer, etc. in theatrical work. I think she was a trained dancer/ballerina. She worked as an exotic dancer (not really a stripper from what the word was around Columbus) to make a go of things and met up with Cortez.
My understanding is it was a pretty clearly proven case. Weird knowing that Amy “Mek” fell into supporting Cortez. And it then gets stranger. Wow.
Patriot Kidnaps Latino Family To Make His Yard Great Again (Wonkette)
Unfortunately for the idiot in Washington who decided he was going snatch a young boy who was starting his mother’s car before school, he never took US History 101 from a textbook that told him that slavery was over. Even though he is clearly black, he must have not realized that the 13th Amendment also applies to brown people. Apparently he looked over at the industrious young latino boy and decided that he should own him for himself. Because why not? Why should a young latino boy be allowed to go to fucking school and get an education when he could clearly be working as a slave for his neighbor who really really really needed some yard work done? Exactly, because SLAVERY IS A CRIME*.

It took a long time to get crowds in the streets. Thousands were dying, and ‘regular folks’ were losing fathers, sons, brothers, and cousins. It took a long time to get organized and unified, or at least coordinated.
Look at these latest numbers from part of that dataset:
(Asked of independents) As of today, do you lean more to the Democratic Party or the Republican Party?
Figures are combined party identifiers + leaners
Republicans + Republican leaners Democrats + Democratic leaners
2018 May 1-10 44 44
2018 Apr 2-11 39 49
That’s a 5 point flip (of independents’ leaning, if they were forced to choose) over a mere one month period.
What can account for this?
Probably it is nothing but random sampling, with the number of people pooled being too small.
So I encountered a bug in Safari’s handling of the CSS calc() function, went to their developer site and filed a report, with a snippet of code that demonstrated the problem. A very simple issue, right?
Got a response from Apple asking me to send along screenshots, a system profile that can take up to an hour to generate, and a link to a page demonstrating the bug.
Fuck that, I’ll just work around it, thanks for nothing. Apple support is usually very good, but this was a very stupid interaction. Might have been automated.

People didn’t march in the street over Watergate. It contributed to the narrative of the lying president. A lot of what’s going on now is not hesitation. It’s thinking. talking, and organizing. And campaigning.

Not to mention the steadily mounting lists of Vietnam War casualties that started piling up year after year: affecting, if not “every block of houses”, enough of them that the War became a tangible presence in the national life - as well as the constant TV presence which never seemed to go away or diminish (despite the steady feed of “we’re winning!” propaganda from the government).
But it took a couple of years for the protest movement to really get moving: the US began its major combat buildup in the summer of 1965: I remember quite clearly one of the first “big” antiwar protests (as it was a few blocks from my high school) in June 1967 - President Johnson was in Los Angeles for a speech at the Century Plaza Hotel in West LA: the demonstration - which had not been expected to be particularly large - turned out several thousand people. The police, nonplussed at the turnout (they would later characterize it, of course, as a “riot”), freaked out and ended up tear-gassing the crowd, beating people up, making mass arrests, etc.
But the real bafflement, I recall, was from the media (just print press and TV in those days): they had been characterizing the antiwar movement for years as a fringe freakshow of commies/radicals/hippies/dopers, and found it hard to wrap their heads (or narratives) around the fact that Vietnam policy was (or still less should be) generating enough opposition to turn out thousands of people into the streets. And sadly, I don’t think a lot of them ever did.
ADD: My recall is better than I thought: see HERE: scroll to timeline for June 23, 1967.

Frankly, if Gilbert and Carsey-Werner wanted to have a show in the Roseanne-niverse, something like this would have been much less fraught with the danger of Roseanne repeatedly sticking her fucking foot in her mouth, because if Roseanne was reduced to a guest/supporting star on a new spinoff, it wouldn’t matter nearly as much what she did or said off-air.

Well, except that apparently Richard Nixon punched Pat Nixon in 1974, sending her to the hospital. I didn’t remember it happening (and I was a news-savvy 14 YO at the time) and from the reactions of others to this news, apparently it was not reported. In fact, Seymour Hersh was chewed out by women at a Nieman Foundation fellows meeting for not reporting it.
But there’s an interesting moment that Hersh did not have to include. In 1974, he writes, Hersh heard that Nixon’s wife Pat was in hospital after being punched by her husband. It was not an isolated occasion. He did not report on the story, he told Nieman Foundation fellows in 1998, because it represented “a merging of private life and public life.” Nixon didn’t make policy decisions because of his bad marriage, went the argument. Hersh was “taken aback” by the response from women fellows, who pointed out that he had heard of a crime and not reported it. “All I could say,” Hersh writes, “is that at the time I did not—in my ignorance—view the incident as a crime.”

NEW: @FLOTUS is expected to attend a Gold Star Families event tomorrow evening at the White House. Similar to the GSF reception she & @realDonaldTrump hosted last year. If Melania does indeed go, it will be her first official event since May 10th. Noted: event is closed press

It was a running game at the old Doctor Who cons, counting how many recycled BBC actors one could spot in a given episode. Extra points for multiple appearances on Who itself.

So much for legislative oversight. So who precisely decides and enforces who may enter and inspect for lawful compliance?

Clearances, and investigations, can be given priorities. Which is why in previous Administrations, people new to government but highly placed could get their clearances.
And after 9/11, the number of people with TS and higher clearances was cut significantly.

Really important. By going this route, Obama will make it difficult for future historians to research and write meaningfully on his presidency. It’s a disservice to the public but also self-defeating for his legacy. https://t.co/TPk71uYJl3

This is shocking. Migrants are being treated as criminals by the Trump administration. What is I.C.E. hiding? I’m hoping that other Democrats follow in Senator Merkley’s footsteps.
There is absolutely no reason for a detention center for children separated from asylum seeker parents to be treated like a top secret black site.
As someone who is more and more appreciating libraries and archives, I too find it discomforting that there will be not official Obama Presidential library, but a private one.
However, the inner dystopian in me wonders if Obama is signaling that he believes the functioning of the Executive Branch is going to be so tainted going forward that even the US Archives is going to fall into the hands of the atavists.
I’m not arguing for or against the decision here - just want to point out that these are not normal times and there’s more to consider than finding the real estate to begin construction.

It’s revolting to think that some of what allegedly went on (and still goes on) at “black sites” is going on right now at these ICE detention centers, because you know it’s fucking happening.
Why else would they deny entry to a fucking sitting US Senator, unless there’s a lot of really bad shit they don’t want to see the light of day?

Watching that video I see a bunch of scared low-level functionaries afraid to do anything but deny entry because anything else and they’ll be out of a job tomorrow.
Given that our society just recently put a “Museum of the Bible” right in the government’s center, whose function is to proselytize for a particular religion, I wonder how much libraries and archives will really mean anymore.

Duterte tells UN expert ‘to go to hell’ over criticism: https://t.co/duUCxv8wol pic.twitter.com/h7oa6FOExM
— World News Tonight (@ABCWorldNews) June 4, 2018
Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte lashed out Sunday at another U.N. human rights expert for making critical remarks about his supposed role in the expulsion of the chief justice, telling him “to go to hell.”
Duterte dismissed the remarks of Diego Garcia-Sayan and told him not to meddle in domestic problems. Duterte was replying to a reporter’s question before flying on a visit to South Korea.
“Tell him not to interfere with the affairs of my country. He can go to hell,” Duterte said in a late-night televised news conference. “He is not a special person and I do not recognize his rapporteur title.”
Garcia-Sayan told reporters in Manila on Thursday that the unprecedented ouster of Maria Lourdes Sereno as chief justice after Duterte lambasted her in public is an attack on judicial independence that could put Philippine democracy at risk.

“The crowd erupted in applause and before they could even finish clapping I said I was kidding and the applause quickly died,” Bowling said.
