Sterling shrinks as Bank of England claims “uncomfortably high” likelihood of no-deal Brexit
[…]
The Bank of England Governor said financial institutions have been “stockpiling” to withstand a potential shock.
Asked if a no-deal scenario would be a disaster, Mr Carney said: “It is highly undesirable. The possibility of a no-deal is uncomfortably high at this point.”
Mr Carney also claimed our economy is 2% smaller than it would have been if Remain had won the 2016 referendum.
His controversial comments triggered a 0.3% fall for the pound, to $1.2975.

Their ideas about what’s “reasonable” and “traditional” about trade, and how the US should be treated by other nations (that they should be dependent on keeping us happy), come from the 1950’s.
A time when most of the world was rubble and/or construction sites, and we were the only industrialized nation on the planet. When they really were dependent on our goodwill.
Trumpers and Brexiters have trouble with the concept of “that was then and this is now.”
We should stop calling them conspiracy theories. They’re conspiracy fantasies. Dark wish fulfillment, immune to reality.

After Heat Wave, a Glaciated Swedish Peak Is No Longer Nation’s Tallest
A record-setting European heat wave has so rapidly melted the glacier atop Sweden’s highest mountain that the peak has now become the country’s second-tallest mountain, scientists say.
The northern, glaciated peak of Kebnekaise Mountain, which just a few years ago was 6,909 feet tall, lost 13 feet of ice and snow from July 2 to July 31, Swedish scientists report. That ice loss was enough to lower the elevation of the north peak below the neighboring, non-glaciated southern peak on Kebnekaise, which is now the nation’s tallest, at 6,870 feet.

- if there’s ever an audit, we’ll fight, drag it out, probably lose, then negotiate to pay reduced tax, penalties and interest

• Former White House staffer Omarosa Manigault Newman suggested President Donald Trump may be experiencing a mental illness in her upcoming book, “Unhinged: An Insider’s Account of the Trump White House.”
• In an excerpt from her book that was obtained by The Daily Mail , Manigault wrote that “something real and serious was going on in Donald’s brain.”
• Manigault claims that despite the White House’s efforts to help Trump rehearse for an interview, he ended up making “erratic and contradictory” remarks instead.
Former White House official Omarosa Manigault Newman suggested President Donald Trump may be experiencing some type of mental disorder in her upcoming book, “Unhinged: An Insider’s Account of the Trump White House.”
It was during an interview in May, between Trump and NBC News host Lester Holt, that she “knew something wasn’t right,” according to an excerpt from her book that was obtained by The Daily Mail .
“While watching the interview I realized that something real and serious was going on in Donald’s brain,” Manigault wrote, referring to the NBC News interview. “His mental decline could not be denied.”
“Throughout this erratic and contradictory interview, I kept thinking, ‘Oh no! Oh no! This is bad!,’” Manigault said.
“Donald rambled. He spoke gibberish,” she added. “He contradicted himself from one sentence to the next.”
During the interview, Trump made several disparaging remarks against the former FBI director James Comey and claimed that he had the Russia investigation in mind when he considered firing Comey in May 2017.
The remarks appeared to conflict with the White House’s claim that Comey’s firing was predicated on the recommendation of deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein and the FBI’s handling of its investigation into Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server.
Manigault said in her book that the White House helped Trump rehearse the talking point for several days: “Hope [Hicks, the former communications director] had gone over the briefing with him a dozen times hitting the key point that he had fired Comey based on the recommendation by the DOJ which the vice president and other surrogates had been reinforcing for days.”

What year did settler colonialism in the U.S. end?
I think you would have to see it as a period where it is in decline. When you see Arizona become a state in 1912 I think, that might be a hard end to physical colonization.
I’m sure she means the word in some other sense of cultural supremacy. I saw one post on her twitter feed advocating that native Americans should learn their tribal languages or white people will do it for them, which is risible nonsense. It’s hard enough trying to teach white American students basic English.
So Eurocentric culture is ‘colonizing’ native indigenous cultures and I have no damned clue how you stop cultures from appropriating and trading and commercializing stuff from one another or why you should try to stop it. I really don’t get this. Cultures that remain in contact will make irrevocable changes on each other with respect to language, durable goods, religious beliefs, mores and food.
The appropriation here is taking a word…colonization…and misusing it in a way to set an inflammatory definition on unavoidable human contact. The fact that Europeans stole land and lives from American indigenous people is crime enough. You will get no argument from me if you want to talk about racial disparities in law enforcement, education and public health. Those things are not ‘colonization’ however.

Maybe we can find a different word for a post-colonial period and maybe we should at least get input from the First Nation folks on what it should be called. But let’s also not forgot that land is indeed still getting snatched and abused.
There is so much to say about the appropriation debate and so much to keep learning about it.
“and commercializing stuff from one another or why you should try to stop it. I really don’t get this”
But to address that one quoted part… it’s incredibly exploitive and goes hand in hand with wanting the culture but not the people. Black folks should have been able to profit off their art for generations but it wasn’t acceptable coming from them so Elvis had to do it. This is part of the supremacist system and it doesn’t just fix itself. It has to be affirmative and intentional. Imagine the wealth that could have been built if this shit weren’t built into the system.
I see soooo much AAVE and POC cultural elements used earnestly by the alt-right Nazis so it’s not like exposure thru the systems that grant them power made them any less fascist. Sharing is not always caring.

Still not colonization though. You end with unsolvable arguments over who can decide what is appropriation and is there really somebody who can ‘give permission’ for a certain food or hair style or clothing pattern to be used and who decides who that is in the first place…
That is how you end up with a teen girl getting a twitter mob on her last May because she bought a vintage dress from a shop for prom.

Meh, there’s no real definition and yall chose the wrong word so generations of wealth not being captured and continued exploitation just can’t be helped. Oh well.

Sorry, but it is the same language and the same terms I get hit with as a trans woman. You get the TERF (trans exclusionary radical feminist) crowd like Dworkin and McKinnon making common cause with far right wing nuts like Maggie Gallagher etc when they claim I am “colonizing” or “invading” female spaces and “appropriating” a female body.
BBC Radio 4 Women’s Hour presenter Jenni Murray released a hotly-debated article in March entitled, “Be trans, be proud—but don’t call yourself a ‘real woman.’”
A little more research on the topic revealed that this idea of “real women” can be traced back almost 40 years, to the heart of the second-wave feminist movement. In 1979, radical feminist Janice Raymond, incensed over discovering that a trans woman had “invaded” a female space, wrote a book called The Transsexual Empire: The Making of the She-Male, in which she argues that transsexualism reinforces the patriarchal ideals of traditional gender roles, and that transsexuals “rape women’s bodies by reducing the real female form to an artifact, appropriating this body for themselves.”
That is where this leads: ethnic balkanization and repudiation of multi cultural liberal society. This is exactly where Bannon, Gorka, Dreher, Steve Miller are going and this sort of thing both gives them a target but also gives them intellectual cover for claims that liberal democracy is a failure.
At the end of the day, I am going to eat the cuisine I want to eat, wear the clothing I wish to wear, listen to whatever music strikes my fancy and be a trans woman, and I am not going to be apologetic about those things. If I am going to be accused of appropriation, I will tell that person I intend no offense, I am enjoying something that seems interesting and I would like to share something of my Scottish culture in return if they want.
I am not going to stop enjoying it however, and I am not “appropriating” anything by being trans or eating different cuisine or buying a pretty dress. I can listen to the people you say I need to listen to. I simply do not agree on this point.

This is where we are talking past each other, I think. Talking about cultural colonization and making absurd claims like “learn your language or whites will learn it for you” completely ignores and trivializes concrete and utterly tangible systemic racism and disparities in education, income, administration of law enforcement and health care.
Attacking a teenage girl for wearing a dress or attacking me for…wait for it…wearing a dress*…is really fucking missing the ball. There are people on reservations right now fighting heart disease and have no medical care within 200 miles.

i’ve faced the same problem with “moderate” for the last 15 years or so. i always reply that moderate does not mean fence sitting or wishy washy. It means not being pigeonholed into polarizing left/right, conservative/liberal paradigms. It means not holding extreme positions, generally black and white ones.
It does not mean that I can’t hold strong or convicted opinions.
It also generally means to face each issue on its own merits. I don’t have to have the same position on the spectrum for issue B as issue A.
Moderate mostly means non-ideologue
re: #105 Scottish Dragon
The appropriation here is taking a word…colonization…and misusing it in a way to set an inflammatory definition on unavoidable human contact. The fact that Europeans stole land and lives from American indigenous people is crime enough. You will get no argument from me if you want to talk about racial disparities in law enforcement, education and public health. Those things are not ‘colonization’ however.
This argument seems pedantic at best in that these racial disparities in wealth, use of force and political power arose directly out of and are perched upon a foundation of colonization. You seem to be quibbling about whether the word itself adequately describes the ongoing situation where those of us who most directly benefited from a horrific crime continue to be accessories to said crime after the act.

Colonization is a discrete activity and has a discrete meaning. Use of the word here I think mischaracterizes what is essentially systemic racist neglect as I mention up above. Moreover, focus on cultural appropriation issues (which I saw on her twitter feed, but I cannot say whether that is a focus in any of her professional work) is a gross disservice to the people in question who are facing actual social emergencies and likely couldn’t give a shit as to whether somebody is wearing an item of ethnic jewelry. It is this sort of thing that astonishes me. People are being being bullied and harassed by the police, racially profiled, left without medical care and without job prospects and we need to debate as to whether use of a clothing item is sufficiently respectful according to a self appointed arbiter on an anonymous platform?
I’m sorry, I just can’t wrap my mind around the fact that there are real emergencies and we are kinda debating the taste of the orange juice in the Titanic salon.

Dallas TV station WFAA did a little documentary about the Alters and the finding of the painting. The Alters did an awful lot of traveling on a schoolteacher’s salary. Personally, I wonder what else they stole. The documentary also has video of Olivia Miller kneeling in front of the painting and you can barely hear her saying, “Holy shitballs.” It’s in the last two minutes.

@PreetBharara If the president pardons Manafort, the downside is that Manafort can be compelled to testify, even against himself, and certainly against the president, regarding the crimes he’s pardoned for.
— Mike Godwin (@sfmnemonic) August 3, 2018
Except Trump can just keep pardoning Manafort for all of the things you list. Trump pardoned Arpaio for criminal contempt of court. This is the purpose of the “witch hunt” rhetoric, to sew the seeds of absolute distrust by Republicans in the DOJ.
It’s pardons all the way down.— Ostrich Jacket Fan Account (@goddamnedfrank) August 3, 2018
Right now Trump’s team is weighing exactly how nuclear they can go. My cynical opinion is that they’ve settled on holding out until the midterms are over and then as long as Republicans still control the Senate they’ll go all in on overt obstruction. Their, probably correct, view will be that no matter what the Republicans won’t back impeachment.

This is an assumption I don’t think you should be prepared to make if you can’t see how acceptable commodification that ignores the source who is disadvantaged and doesn’t have the same opportunities is related to the racist neglect.
Yeah. I do get fuckin pissed when a white woman gets credit for a hairstyle that black women have been rocking for decades because it’s acceptable on her. We were erased and they get different types of currency from it. And then add on the fact that you know it’s historical and you and your family keep seeing it happen over and over again. Yeah. I get pissed and it’s all related.

Yes, I find it kinda offensive. I also realize that I have a relative position of cultural power that means it cannot easily be used as a slur against me and I get that. More to the point though, it simply does not affect my day to day problems of money, back pain and worries of trans discrimination. I can look at that, see that it is stupid and offensive and still have to worry about actual, concrete issues.
In the end, if somebody wants to wear that crap…it’s their money and not mine and I see no point in trying to shame them if they are already silly enough to buy this stuff. It won’t work for starters, since I have no power in their lives and do not desire any. Moreover, I do not want others to have power to tell me what I should or should not wear in return.

The last thing any of these assholes can allow at this point is real accountability or daylight to shine on what they’ve been doing. The only guaranteed way to stop them is to vote in such overwhelming numbers that Dems get supermajorities in both the House and Senate and that’s not going to happen.
With a sane, functioning Congress a pardon would absolutely trigger impeachment. But we don’t have that, the GOP is co-conspiring with Trump to destroy our democracy and they’re all in a this point.

One of the first news stories when I moved to the wild north country, and I remember it clearly because I was still staying at a hotel while interviewing and looking for housing: A MOOSE was running around on the beltway that surrounds the Twin Cities. It had gotten separated from the herd that rambles through the area every fall and found its way into rush hour traffic. It escaped safely, but I remember thinking, “Dear God,what have I gotten myself into?”

Here are some interesting stats from today’s jobs report. People with at least a bachelors degree are basically at full employment, their unemployment rate has barely changed over the last year from 2.3% to 2.2%, People with at least a high school degree have seen their unemployment drop by a half point over the last year. In contrast, there has been a huge drop in the unemployment rate for high school dropouts in the last year, from 7% to 5.1%. They are either getting jobs as employers have to lower their standards, dropping out of the work force, or getting their GEDs to move up the economic ladder.

I saw one about 100 yards off in the Poconos while walking the dog. Remy wanted to go see the big weird looking canine, and the damn thing started heading slowly towards us.
I got the dog under control and slowly walked away. Once the bear disappeared into another yard, I called the cops and let them know there was a bear in the area. They were pretty much like “Yeah, flatlander, call us when there’s an actual problem.”
I prefer my bears in zoos, thanks.
We have had to reroute the high school cross country course because of bear sightings. Cut out the woods portion and stick to the open field. Happens in bear country. We have had a couple 300 - 400 lb bear relocated in the last few years when they have decided to reside a little too close to town.

Uhhh….How would this work?

They don’t know either. SMDH
Separate but equal, no doubt.
re: #278 Dr. Matt
Nope. Not at all. You sleep with dogs…..you get deported. Adios.
This is a fucked up and frankly misogynistic response. Women often marry men who later turn out to be monsters, it’s not their fault. I have no idea why you feel comfortable blaming the victim for her abuse but it says a lot more about you than her.
