Vote November 6th, preferably against the party that doesn’t want you to. Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan would hate it.

From the previous thread about Herman Cain and Stewart Varney:

re: #346 HappyWarrior

Assholes.

It would appear to be the goal to weaken or discredit the US military. I can’t imagine who that might benefit.

Giving an unlawful order which is so heinous would likely cause a significant portion of the military to disobey the order as unlawful.

Those who obey it are war criminals, those who disobey it (in theory) could be charged with mutiny (a death penalty offence).

I am not very hopeful with a guy nicknamed “mad dog” in charge of DOD (and not putting military personnel in charge of DOD is precisely to avoid situations such as this).

To disobey such an order (if it came down from the President) would be the military directly disobeying the civilian government.

Meghan McCain (R-“reasonable conservative”) shows she is fact-challenged on “The View” in a discussion about Stacey Abrams and Oprah Winfrey.

Anna Navarro was on as a guest host.

McCain’s argument was Stacey Abrams (and Beto O’Rourke) should be careful because having people such as Oprah Winfrey campaigning will cause them to be viewed as “liberal elites.”

“She brings a very personal story to Georgia,” Navarro said. “Remember, Oprah wasn’t born in New York, she wasn’t born in California, she’s not an East Coast or Left Coast elite. She was born in Mississippi, in the segregated south. She’s lived discrimination. When she talks about this, she talks about it in her own skin, from her own experience and from what our ancestors built. I think she brings a different type of credibility.”

Rock throwing had a role in the lead-up to the Kent State shootings. Live fire in response was universally condemned at the time, even by Nixon and his henchmen, so much so that Guard commanders concocted a ludicrous claim that a sniper had fired on the troops. No evidence has ever surfaced for a sniper, but the claim persists among RWNJs.

Yeah, a sniper who usually is in a hidden position.

So, what did the guard do, turn and fire on students clearly both running away and milling about watching from a distance.

Because it’s bulkshit.

It’s always been bulkshit.

Even the notion of Islamic terrorists streaming in from Mexico has been bulkshit article of faith among the bigot brigade base.

Majority of those foreign terrorists have come in legally with visas and overstayed.

A handful have crossed a border illegally - and they’ve come in via Canada, not Mexico.

The thing of it is, that the best way to crack down on those in the US illegally would be to devote more resources to visa processing and citizenship requests.

And that goes back to the idea that those would have to be about the stupidest terrorists in the world, going to Guatemala or Nicaragua and then walk over a thousand miles to the border.

If Trump wasn’t spending tax money on a stunt with military photographers and some concertina wire, he could be setting up vetting facilities for any of those who actually get to the border.

If there really was a terrorist, capture him, instant intelligence coup and favourable press.

All he knows is what his wingnut staff is telling him, and they’re getting it from wingnut media, who got it from Guatemala’s president’s specious claim that his country’s intelligence service captured “100 ISIS agents” (that’s where this crap started; RWNJ blogs had that as soon as someone translated the Spanish for them).

My point was that if you’ve pinpointed the location of some terrorists, you don’t worry about keeping them out: you go after them — as Obama did w/OBL (hence the Seal Team 6 reference).

Someone needs to ask Trump why he’s not doing anything to go after the terrorists he’s talking about.

Wait…I have to reconsider. Trump getting elected might be edging Kent State out…

I highly recommend James A. Michener’s book Kent State, What Happened and Why. Michener was already in his 60s at the time and primarily a fiction writer so he offers a little different perspective from many of the histories.
Among other things, he sheds some light on a now almost forgotten but especially odious aspect of the aftermath: The huge outpouring of right wing support for the Guard and the initially absurd official line. The infamous Hard Hat riots, instigated by Peter Brennan, who later became Nixon’s Secretary of Labor, occurred just 4 days later.
Wikipedia again

A Gallup Poll taken immediately after the shootings reportedly showed that 58 percent of respondents blamed the students, 11 percent blamed the National Guard and 31 percent expressed no opinion…….
Students from Kent State and other universities often got a hostile reaction upon returning home. Some were told that more students should have been killed to teach student protesters a lesson; some students were disowned by their families.

It was similar in many ways to the similarly forgotten public support for Lt. William Calley during and after his court martial for the My Lai massacre. Nixon’s base was actually ahead of him in justifying the incident, something we now see with Trump.

It was interesting to hear Mark Mothersbaugh and Joe Walsh talk to Marc Maron on his podcast (separate interviews) WTF. Both of them went to Kent State and talked about it. It sounded like a pretty amazing college and town right up until the events and then it all kind of shrank and was never the same, according to them.

I get the candle should be lit before sunset, so I can figure that out. When should it be extinguished?

Sunset, by official Jewish rules, is when it’s dark enough to see three stars.

If it’s an ordinary put-it-in-candlesticks candle, let it burn itself out. If it’s one of those enormous slow-burning standalones… 25 hours.

(Also reason #655 that I don’t let “sport” hunters on my property: They are not only a hazard to livestock, vehicles and facilities, but to each other as well.)

Texas hunters who accidentally shot each other blamed undocumented immigrants, police reveal

A hunting guide and his client accidentally shot each other and then blamed it on undocumented migrants, police in the US have said.

Officers attended the scene at a remote south Texas ranch, near to the Mexico border, in early January, finding the two men bleeding from gunshot wounds. A second guide was involved in the incident, but escaped without injury.

The casualties, guide Walker Daughtery, 26, and client Edwin Roberts, 59, and the other guide, Michael Bryant, told police they suspected the shooters were undocumented immigrants they had seen on the ranch earlier in their trip.

Their story was shared thousands of times online after Texas Commissioner of Agriculture and Donald Trump ally Sid Miller wrote about it on Facebook.

re: #57 Shiplord Kirel, Friend of Moose and Squirrel

Among other things, he sheds some light on a now almost forgotten but especially odious aspect of the aftermath: The huge outpouring of right wing support for the Guard and the initially absurd official line. The infamous Hard Hat riots, instigated by Peter Brennan, who later became Nixon’s Secretary of Labor, occurred just 4 days later.
Wikipedia again

I had to re-familiarize myself with The Hard Hat Riots. Now, I remember some of that.

A lot of stuff was going down in those few weeks of 1970.

And you know, after reading about The Hard Hat Riot Wiki page, so much of that is still going on in much the same ways. The police standing and watching because they are sympathetic to the Union guys reminded me of the reports that New York police watched the Proud Boys brawling with anti-fascists just over a week or so ago.

A lot of people might not know it, but riots at Ohio State University led to Kent State.

As this article states, they were even more violent than Kent State. And a lot of people say, since it got so close to then Governor Jim Rhodes, it caused the overreaction by Rhodes with the blessing of Dick Nixon that then played out even more at Kent.

plunderbund.com - The 1970 Ohio State Riots: Bigger And More Violent Than Kent State

A little bit from the linked article.

- -

At 10 PM Governor Rhodes, making a show of force to crush dissent in Ohio, called out the Ohio National Guard. (No Ohio Governor has ever deployed the Guard more than Rhodes)

The sight of troops, armored personnel carriers and tanks rolling down the streets of a major American university in a state capitol has a chilling effect on dissent. It always conjures visions of the Blitzkrieg or Soviet responses to dissent.

In the aftermath it was determined seven people had been shot, thankfully with no fatalities.

During that violent day, Football coaching legend Woody Hayes spoke to the students attempting to quell the violence. During the unrest, Woody was the only member of the Ohio State administration to actually speak to the students, to seek peace. Woody always seemed to genuinely care about the students at OSU.

The next day violence erupted again as news broke of the secret war waged by Nixon in Cambodia. An estimated 4000 students hit the streets. College campuses across the nation exploded into violence. Ohio State was as violent as any. Kent State and Ohio University also erupted showing the War had lost support in the Ohio hinterland.

As the smoke cleared, 400 had been arrested and more than 100 were injured. Again, with the brutality of the city and state’s response, it was pure luck there were no fatalities.

The screeching fear of the RWNJs is so extreme right now that the editor of the Texas Tribune, no shrinking violet, has basically said he’s leaving his Twitter feed for a while, and will only be talking about barbecue and beer.

The white racists feel Texas slipping from their grasp, and it is driving them into full-on panic. I know that Beto has a very VERY slim chance to win … but even that chance is enough to make them shit right through their pants.

While O’Keefe is well-known to folks on the left who are informed, he is not to others. Thus he continues to get his video shown on news outlets (particularly FOX) and swapped around conservative groups and Websites.

He successfully took out ACORN that way, and the Planned Parenthood shooting a few years ago came from his “baby parts” video which Carly Fiorina repeated in her campaign.

Hey! I have relatives that lived in Wooster. Went to my first big concert at College of Wooster in 1970 to see Chicago. Great show for a first timer. Also saw Emerson, Lake and Palmer (with the Doctor Hook Medicine Show) and Sly and the Family Stone (with Jo Jo Gunn) there.

I lived about 45 minutes due west in Mansfield. My friends and I covered concerts from Clevelan/Akron to Wooster and Mansfield to Columbus.

That school has a great drama department. Pretty campus too.

Yeah, there is a reason Cleveland was picked for the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame…much to the chagrin to many in music. The Agora in Cleveland (and Columbus and Toledo) are famous for great shows and loved by a lot of artists due to crowds ready to rock with anyone that can play well…familiar or not.

I am going through a book right now I just got from the Columbus library: Rock ‘n’ Roll - The Cleveland Connection. It is almost like an encyclopedia of everything to do with the history of the Cleveland music scene. It talks about all the local bands, the venues, the local rock writers, outside opinions of Cleveland music from artists, etc. It’s great, but so much to go through.

And yes, there is a strong connection to the Detroit sound in Cleveland bands.

Did someone leave the water on?

Multiple Aurora fire department sources told CBS4 about the bizarre incident that occurred late Monday night. Firefighters from Station 15, located at 1880 South Flat Rock Trail, had left the station for a call. Firefighters and police theorize that after they drove away and before the station’s bay doors automatically closed, Yesenia Griego sneaked into the building.

When they returned, the firefighters found an alarm going off, the doors open and the lights on and a fire hose spewing large amounts of water inside the 13,000 square foot building. In the laundry room, firefighter gear had been strewn around throughout the area. It appeared someone had activated a fire extinguisher and sprayed the area. A TV remote was broken and the station’s riding lawnmower had been ridden out of the station. They also found someone had smashed the windshields of firefighters’ vehicles parked at the station. Damage to the vehicles is estimated at $10,000.

And yes, there is a strong connection to the Detroit sound in Cleveland bands.

That’s great to know. We usually stop on our way from New Hampshire to family home in Illinois somewhere south of Akron, but one night misjudged and ended up in a Travel Lodge at the Mansfield exit. While I’m sure Mansfield is beautiful, our hotel was the kind where you can be sure a hooker died in your room. As for Wooster, we have family connections—some on my grandmother’s side went to China and India as missionaries after studying there in the late 1800s (I think). Anyway, one of their kids did well and donated money for the McGaw Chapel on campus.

On the one hand, these lines are ridiculous. No one should have to wait long in a line in 2018 to vote.

But on the other hand - these lines are BEAUTIFUL. Because people are doing what they need to do to make change in Texas and in this country.

It’s great, but so much to go through.

tallahassee.com (Tallahassee Democrat on the shooting at the yoga studio)

Alex Redding was in the Bar at Betton downstairs when a woman ran in hyperventilating followed by a man with blood on his head. Redding said two to three other people entered the bar seeking assistance and said that a tall man with a beard was inside the Hot Yoga Studio acting strange and began shooting during the class.

The man with blood on his head told the patrons he tried to stop the shooter but was pistol-whipped before the shooter then shot himself.

The incident immediately interrupted the gubernatorial campaign of Andrew Gillum, who tweeted he was “deeply appreciative of law enforcement’s quick response to the shooting at the yoga facility in Tallahassee today.”

“No act of gun violence is acceptable,” he wrote. “I’m in close communication with law enforcement officials and will be returning to Tallahassee tonight.”

GOP congresswoman: No need for more gun violence research, the NRA has us covered (Think Progress, more at the link)

Nearly 40,000 people die annually from gun deaths in the United States. Thanks to the gun lobby, the federal government has largely been prohibited from doing research to figure out how to reduce those numbers. But Rep. Claudia Tenney (R-NY) said Thursday that she thinks any more research would be a waste of money. Her reasoning: the National Rifle Association already has done all the research we need.

Tenney, who is facing a close re-election race in New York’s 22nd Congressional District, debated her Democratic opponent, Assemblyman Anthony Brindisi (D), on Thursday night. After bragging about being “very proud” of her “A” rating from the NRA, she was asked by the moderator whether she would support funding to study gun violence in this country. Without hesitating, Tenney made clear she would not.

I try not to be too optimistic. I still haven’t gotten over 2016—or 2004, for that matter. However, my feeling is that these “likely voter” polls are going to turn out to be way wrong this time. There are a LOT of “unlikely voters” showing up. Even at that, the margin of error is always ± 3%. My prediction is that any race that has the Democrat 3% behind is a tie. We’ll see how that works out. I was wrong last time….

Lighting the candle out of respect for VB!

Quitting smoking may extend your life but that time is used up looking for ex-smokers looking for matches.

Sorry for the levity but candle now lit out of respect for VB and all.

Obama seems to be replacing Bill as the party’s superstar who continues to pack stadiums long after he’s left office.

And: irksome as it may be to have to admit: a superstar with much less negative baggage than his Dem predecessor.

Obama is the best POTUS of my lifetime (LBJ close second)

Clinton tried so hard to go to the middle and that crippled the Democratic Party for decades. Obama has no embarrassing, morally conflicting baggage that one must always try and defend, the crap the wingnuts spew about Obama is literally laughable.

Now we often have to say “Imagine if Obama did this” but in this instance

“Imagine if trump did this” - hahahaha - he would get told to go shop someplace else.

This is actually even bigger. Ana (one ‘n’) is still a registered R herself, so this is infighting as well as proof that Meghan isn’t a reasonable conservative anymore!

i literally cannot remember farrakhan being in the news for anything other than a case of Both Sides in the last five years. these columns are the only evidence i’ve seen that he is even alive

Get out of my head! This is literally the first thing I thought of: “Is Farrakhan even still alive?”

If you’re not Jewish, please light a candle anyway because we need more light. It is so dark out there.

A candle is burning here now, a small flickering spark in the darkness
