Britain’s longest-standing foreign policy directive is simple: prevent Europe from uniting, as a united Europe could potentially become an existential threat to the UK.
I’m not saying a united Europe would be an existential threat, at least not nowadays, but this ancient idea is still very much alive in the minds of the Brits.
Trump and the GOP are so afraid of nonwhites coming to the US to seek asylum that they need to get thousands of troops to sit along the border to guard against a nonexistent threat.
Trump’s wasting military assets and resources for this bulkshit. The Pentagon continues going along with it because chain of command - it’s what they have to do, but no one seems to argue that it’s a total waste, that this isn’t a threat, and that this is degrading military preparedness for actual emergencies, military action, etc.
Because that’s what it is doing.
Trump again mobilizes the military to deal with a nonexistent crisis, when he failed to move heaven and earth to help millions of Americans in Puerto Rico. We know why.
They aren’t white and they didn’t vote for him.
Trump should be removed from office on that basis alone. Trump violated his oath, and continues doing so every fucking day without consequence from Congress. Democrats are beginning to turn that around, but with the Senate still in GOP hands, doing anything is an uphill battle unless the evidence is so completely overwhelming that they are forced into self-preservation mode (and even then, they’ll wait it out and hope to hold even into 2020).

Somebody posted that famous scene from Yes, Minister where they explain why Britain joined the EU in the first place: to make it more divisive.
They had hoped that Brexit would split the EU and were shocked to find them standing firm and united in negotiations, not willing to budge an inch on any free movement of goods or money without equal free movement of people.

Oh yeah, in the days after the Brexit vote, the UK’s tabloid press were going whole-hog with stories about how the EU would now certainly split up and other EU nations would follow Britain’s lead and rush to the exits.
They’ve received quite an unpleasant surprise, I’d say; the EU has held fast (so far, at least) and the Brits have been thus far unable to employ their classic divide and conquer strategy - it’s not working. And because the EU is standing firm on this whole matter, the British are at something of a loss on what to do next. Their classic gambit has failed them utterly and they’re thrashing about to find a new ploy.

Just sorta wargaming it, but I reckon that first, Northern Ireland will probably vote to join the Republic of Ireland; then, Scotland succeeds in its independence bid, and ends up joining the EU, leaving a rump UK of England and Wales. Gibraltar? Hard to say right now, but who knows, maybe they’ll decide to go back to Spain.
And that’ll be the end of the UK as we know it. The ultimate irony: the UK destroyed by Brexit, which they thought would destroy the EU.

Actually, Europe did “unite” - with Britain on the inside.
Now, the UK finds itself pretty much in the same geopolitical situation vis-a-vis Europe it was in, say, the early 18th Century.
Only without the leverage of being able to finance other peoples’ wars to keep their trade advantages going.
It’s AD 2019: Europe (outside Russia) is mainly a united, bloc, they don’t fight wars among each anymore, British business isn’t as important as they though/think it to be, and there’s no overseas Empire to exploit.

Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-Hawaii) is pitching herself as Democrats’ top anti-war voice and a serious progressive in her bid for the party’s 2020 presidential nomination. But even as she spent years decrying American military interventions abroad and money’s role in politics, as a congresswoman she accepted donations worth more than $100,000 from the country’s biggest producers of bombs, planes and weapons systems.

Her campaign was DOA but as we should have learned from the Trump fiasco, there are certain candidates who are immune from criticism. They can say or do anything that would have quickly destroyed another candidate but their base will remain loyal. Though I wonder how much of this loyalty was actually due to bots that overwhelmed any criticism and came up with dubious responses that succeeded in persuading those who wavered.

re: #70 MsJ
It’s not really surprising, and really basic math. According to recent polls, there’s 30% who are for sure voting for Trump. There’s 57% saying they won’t vote for Trump, and another 13% that are unsure.
In order to win as a third party/independent candidate, he’ll have to get votes among the 70% in the not-Trump camps.
Let’s say that 13% breaks fairly evenly. In a two person race, that makes it Not Trump 63%, Trump 36%. That’s 1964, 1972, 1984 style 49-50 state landslide territory.
In a three way race, let’s say that 13% splits evenly, you’re looking at Trump being somewhere around 34%. That leaves the Democratic nominee and an independent 66% of the vote to split, and that’s where the real scary scenarios come in. If the Democratic nominee isn’t “good” and the independent is “good”, you’re looking at a 34-33-33 sort of race. How those numbers split on a state by state level is a game of roulette, and it’s entirely possible nobody gets to 270.
This isn’t 1992 where Perot pulled pretty evenly between the two major parties. Trump’s floor is clearly in the 30-35% range. His ceiling is probably not much better than about 45%. So, if you’re sure that you aren’t going to be able to pull votes from Trump, who is basically at his floor; you’re only option in a three way race is to pull from the Democratic nominee.
And this all begs the question: why make your road harder as an independent/third party candidate? If you run in and win the Democratic primary, you’ll have the institutional support of the Democratic Party. You won’t have to worry about ballot access, or splitting votes in a way that results in Trump winning the electoral college or House vote with a third of the popular vote (because there will only be two major candidates running).

Hardaway, Lee, and Burke were basically there to make the numbers line up in a trade. Hardaway is probably the only one that’ll get playing time, I’m guessing.
The Mavs between Porzingis and Doncic are set to be very, very good for a very, very long time.

Republicans want to destroy government. It’s working in places like Colville, WA.
Could the #governmentshutdown and continued cuts in agency staffing portend a future with fewer federal employees in the rural West? https://t.co/dxP6n9sm1Y
— High Country News (@highcountrynews) January 31, 2019
In Colville, Washington, a town of about 5,000 in the northeast corner of the state, not everyone was upset about the longest government shutdown in history.
“I say, shut it down forever,” Thomas Carpenter said as he stepped out of a Main Street shop and into an SUV. “From my perspective, if it hasn’t changed for me, then a lot of the unnecessary stuff can just go away.”
Carpenter’s words were echoed in results from an online poll published by the local newspaper, the Statesman Examiner. While the early January poll was by no means scientific, it gives a snapshot of anti-federal sentiment in a county where President Donald Trump carried two-thirds of the vote and federal employees are among the highest-paid employees. Here, two-thirds of poll respondents replied, “Even with the partial shutdown, there are too many federal employees,” or “The feds aren’t working? I didn’t even notice.”
[…]
“If it was a true government shutdown, it would have been felt a long time ago,” said one furloughed Forest Service employee: The timber industry would have lost work, and timber companies would be on the phone with Cathy McMorris Rodgers, the local Republican congressional stalwart, complaining about the impact on their businesses.
That furloughed worker and another mid-career Forest Service employee, both of whom work on projects related to forest health, said the shutdown has made them question their career choices. “Morale is low and is going to be low,” one said. “We’re going down a road to bitterness.” Both workers, who asked not to be identified because they were not authorized to speak with the media, felt like they’d be playing catch-up for months to come. They both wondered out loud about their future job stability and the chances of finding outside employment.

If the sun were to magically disappear, it would be 8.5 minutes before we would know it. Not only would we not see the sun disappear for 8.5 minutes, the earth would still curve in it’s orbit for that length of time until if flew off it’s orbit. The outer planets would take even longer.

TSA probably makes flying safer (though their testing rates at high traffic airports at high travel times might suggest otherwise), but I’ve long said they make airports generally less safe. All those people waiting in line at checkpoints, and folks seeing them off, they used to be spread throughout the airport. Now they’re all in one place - which is convenient for a shooter or bomber. The fact that it hasn’t happened yet is actually kind of surprising to me.

Counterpoint, the second: we can do more than one thing at a time.

Twitter trends can be manipulated.
And I’m sure people are paid well to do such.
Yet it remains evident even in news feeds - America cares about their circuses more than just about anything else.
Admit that you’re in the race to keep Trump in the White House because you want more welfare for the rich, er, tax cuts!

While I see your point, Iran is one of four countries (USA, USSR—let’s face it, that’s what Putin’s running—,NK, and Iran) that might be stupid enough to first-strike. And if IRAN does that, ISRAEL won’t hit IT back, but use the #SamsonOption to destroy Europe and USA.

What else can provide a measuring stick for what America cares most for?

Will this fucking winter never end? Today I drove to the library and the car thermometer showed that we were down to 55 degrees.
We’re going below 0 degrees tonight in New England, but never fear: it’s going to be 50F by next Tuesday.
OK, call it sour grapes, but in fact the grapes have fallen, soured, and rotted back into primordial ooze.
I’ve watched or listened to every single Super Bowl (listened to when I was on the road or at work in some pizza joint or other). That streak ends Sunday.
Screw Roger Goodell and all his works. And screw the Rams and even the Patriots for taking part in this travesty.

Right now, you could probably take off the oil pan, dip the bottom in some warm water, and pop the whole 5 qt out like an ice cube from an ice cube tray.
I’m all in. Fuck it.

He seems to be like Trump in many ways. He is putting out tweets that link to media that is positive to him and cries about that which is not. Also he states wild generalizations about the ‘radical’ left of the Democrat party not making America great.
He seems to be ignoring people thinking he is a massive asshole being in the majority and calling them bullies and why he just has to run.*
Somebody give him a flashlight. It’s dark up there.
*Run as in this is supposedly his exploratory stage. He’s not running for anything yet…but if he does run and it appears he could be a danger in helping elect Trump and doesn’t have the polling to show a path to winning, he will withdraw - says one adviser Steve Schmidt. Bullshit. He is exploring because no one is kissing his ass. If he got more positive feedback this would be a full candidacy.

Yeah, I don’t recall those wild fluctuations growing up in Illinois in the 60s and 70s. It snowed in November of December and then there was snow on the ground until March (and often an ice storm in April for good measure).
