Is there any way back from a Brexit cliff edge?

Here’s something that has gotten almost no coverage here in the US:

Air strikes in battle for Libyan capital as US withdraws troops

In another sign of the worsening situation on the ground, a contingent of US forces supporting the US Africa Command evacuated Libya for security reasons, a US statement said. It gave no details.

Mitt is getting way too liberal for the GOP, he better watch it.

He’s gone from singling out 47% to 25% now. I guess that is progress.

He’s just asking questions on a TV show. Chuck doesn’t want to disappoint anyone so he can get them on that show.

So, he’ll just point his pen at us and say he doesn’t have enough time, this could go on (and be a long debate which we will never have).

The usual amount: The GOP playing the “Those undeserving bastards are stealing your tax dollars!” BS intended to serve as an excuse for the heartless shit they want to make happen. The idea is that if “only” 1/4 of the population is inconvenienced, then the other 3/4 somehow benefit from the ACA being repealed.

today’s sermon in large part about how many Christians don’t realize that Christ’s statement in Lazarus’ house that “there will be poor always” is a deuteronomical call to arms against poverty, and not some right-wing rationalization to resigning ourselves to do nothing.

Michael E. Busch, a gregarious former coach and high school teacher who became the longest-serving House of Delegates speaker in Maryland history, died Sunday after a short bout with pneumonia. He was 72.

Busch died at University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, where he had been placed Saturday on a ventilator to help him breathe. A statement Sunday morning from his office said Busch had made the decision to use the ventilator, but that his condition took a turn Sunday for the worse.

But if it slows/reduces/eliminates the number of “illegal immigrants”* in the country, all said policies will be deemed a smashing success by a disgracefully large number of people.
An unfortunately, I have the feeling that the Administration is probably planning to double down on its anti-immigration stance (the “NO VACANCY” policy), and enforce it with even harsher methods than at present.

Gum bacteria implicated in Alzheimer’s and other diseases

Researchers are reporting new findings on how bacteria involved in gum disease can travel throughout the body, exuding toxins connected with Alzheimer’s disease, rheumatoid arthritis and aspiration pneumonia. They detected evidence of the bacteria in brain samples from people with Alzheimer’s and used mice to show that the bacterium can find its way from the mouth to the brain.

Trump attacks Rep. Ilhan Omar hours after a supporter was charged with threatening to kill her

Trump delivered his disparaging remarks against Omar just hours after police in New York charged a man for threatening to assault and murder her.

Patrick Carlineo Jr., an avowed Trump supporter, was arrested Friday for calling Omar’s office and delivering an expletive-filled rant that included violent threats against the elected official.

“Do you work for the Muslim Brotherhood? Why are you working for her, she’s a fucking terrorist? I’ll put a bullet in her fucking skull,” Carlineo allegedly told staffers, according to the criminal complaint filed by the US Attorney’s Office in the Western District of New York.

Despite my intense interest in all things space-related, then and now, I had never heard of this 1962 movie before someone posted about it on the Apollo/Saturn FB page today.

Wikipedia
Apparently it is a satirical comedy that gently mocks the same government and industry figures Disney had earlier deified in his Man in Space series. The FBI complained to Disney about the script, since it portrayed an FBI agent as an astronaut’s bodyguard, which is not their job. The script was duly changed, with the FBI agent becoming a “federal security agent.” The FBI then complained because the “security agent” was portrayed as a buffoon.
It is available on Amazon Prime so I may check it out. Given the minimal production values and lowest-common-denominator scripting in many of Disney’s mass market products of the time, I am not expecting much. There might be something there, though.

Well, I went out and stood in front of a church this afternoon with a sign calling out their pastor, who is on record as saying that women who have abortions should be executed. Turns out I fucked up. The pastor is in Salt Lake City, harassing the Mormons who go to General Conference. But I did get to yell at some of the people who came out to talk to me. I made it absolutely clear that I absolutely favor the lives of the women already born and living and I was just not going to give an inch to their “what about the unborn women?” cant.

I don’t think they liked me calling them a cult, but when FOUR OF THEM, at SEPARATE TIMES, came out and told me that “fetus” means “baby,” I think I’m justified in calling them a cult.* I think and hope they were startled when I shouted several times, “Jesus save us from your professional followers!” when they tried browbeating me. And of course I’m angry! Those people want to force women to be pregnant against their will! The piece de resistance was they told me I was going to hell. Good! If Calvin’s god (the one these people worship) is the one in charge, I WANT to go to hell. I would rather go to hell than worship an evil being like that, who, according to their own teachings, condemns people to hell before they’re even born!

There will probably be a video of Angry Me. I was also very angry some times when picketing the Scientologists, so just because I was angry with the pro-life church doesn’t mean I am angry with God. I’m just angry at their stupidity and, well, cultishness.

*I mean, seriously, it was the same wording and everything. It was creepy as hell.

Comparing immoral users of image with mass murder is disgusting.

the trick was used. The Problem is that hate blinds and destroys judgement. You see things like threats that aren’t even close to being there, and act against the threats you think are there. With The right horrific results. An extremist is basically a person who is dependent /2
of hatred. In The case of ICE against “infidels”, in the case of extremists on the other side against Muslims and immigrants, in historical cases non-Aryan, Jews and other “Untermensch” (and we have not gotten rid of them completely yet). Extremism is the threat, whether Christians, Jews, Muslims, /3
Hindus, Buddhists, atheists, Swedes, immigrants or even Pastafarians. They have the very same capacity for atrocities, just the right excuse to start missing. Which is where the “immoral usage” of Ebba’s image comes in. It forms part of the apology /4
for those hate-addicted to get started and commit atrocities. The more you realize just that, basically extremists regardless of the superficial kind of the same scrap and barley, only at different stages, the easier it is to resist and deal with the problem. /5
Plus lots of other bonus effects, such as being able to see how some sorts of tricks pop up again and again through at least centuries in history (know myself some tricks that have been in use for 700 years, at least). And the vast majority of times have innocent blood flowed. /6
If you do not learn from history, you are doomed to repeat it. I just Hope that some time enough people learn to avoid thhat those who slept in the history lesson repeating history /FIN

Thank you—this was unexpected. I didn’t see it as a Gospel thing, I see it as standing up for women. These people had the *gall* to haul out Dred Scott v. Sanford and try to use it to say that there should be no abortion. Well, there’s a category difference between a zygote/embryo/fetus and an already here, already living and breathing person. And those people would also enslave women to pregnancy and childbirth, which can be dangerous, even fatal to women.

Oh, and their pastor? He’s trying this dodge that he’s not advocating the killing of women who have had abortions. No, that’s for the state to do. But he sure as heck will advocate for laws calling for execution of women who commit murder (in his mind) by having abortions. He’s such a poseur. He has no problem with going to open mic at the Phoenix city council meeting and call on the council to make Phoenix a “sanctuary city for the unborn.” He and his fellows were talking about how wonderful it was that they spoke truth to the city council. *shakes head* It was during open mic, where anyone has three minutes to get out what’s on their mind, whether it’s about noisy neighbors, potholes, dogs running loose, or, in this case, going to a city they don’t live in to preach at the council.

Very familiar with Frau im Mond. It was a significant milestone in spaceflight history because it was really the first time the public had been exposed to serious, and technically valid, ideas about spaceflight. Hermann Oberth, author of the crucially influential pamphlet The Rocket into Planetary Space, was an advisor on the film.

This is the sort of government you expect to see a third world kleptocracy, where the few competent people are constantly in danger of being unseated by power-hungry bastards looking to empower themselves by destroying others.

Basically, Game of Thrones, but without the beheadings and supernatural murders (so far).

Many people are telling me Satan turned down the job, because signing an NDA was too much for him.

Nah, he’s a lawful evil man of wealth and taste. Of course he would not get along with the chaotic neutral and chaotic evil thugs of this administration…

Trump is repeating what Miller probably told him, that the “country is full.” IIRC, it’s a talking point among nativists that there is no more room in the USA for people of a certain kind, because otherwise White Culture will be diluted or even eliminated.

Conservatives trying to control women by limiting their life choices to being mothers is all part of this too.

Yes. They want the kind of control and social stratification seen in The Handmaid’s Tale.

I live in the inner mountain west. I’ve driven the lonely highways of Montana and Nevada, Wyoming, northern Arizona. The country is not full. In very many places surrounding my house for 500 miles in every direction, there’s a whole lot of nothing, bare expanses of land, rugged mountains, no houses or stores. There’s a 150 mile stretch of Interstate 70 in Utah where there are no gas stations.

I drove a friend from Boston down I-15 in Utah once. He couldn’t believe how empty it was. What I told him then and I’ll repeat now is: yes, it’s empty, but there are water issues in the Intermountain West. We have to be careful about just putting people there willy nilly because the land isn’t really able to support a lot of people without careful resource planning.

I’ve wondered how many people got stuck on that stretch in Utah because they just assumed there would be a gas station. I’ve done a few reasonably long drives…Phoenix to San Antonio, and Phoenix to Denver, and there is always a gas station every 60 to 70 miles. Driving that stretch in Utah is basically like driving through a Mars landscape, with the same amount of rest stops.

St. George. Las Vegas. Hell, even metro Phoenix. Those places shouldn’t even be there. But we wily humans, man…

In wrestling news, Kofi Kingston is the new WWE champion tonight. He’s not the first colored world champion but the ones who came before him were of the lighter skinned variety like Dwayne Johnson and Roman Reigns.

Here’s Kofi:

His victory is overdue but noteworthy nevertheless. Also, he and I were born on the exact same day. Pretty cool.

Also, the crowd was going fucking nuts for him during most of the match, so that’s a good sign.

St. George, Utah. They’ve been building golf courses and retirement castles there for a number of years. It’s very arid there, nine inches of precipitation annually. We humans are not good at thinking things through like water management ahead of time.

He is also the first unquestionably black WWE champion. While there have been other top-tier belts and other champions of color (The Rock is half-black, half-Samoan and his Samoan heritage often superseded his black heritage in promotion), Kofi is the first Black wrestler to hold the championship, the one with the longest lineage in the company.

I haven’t watched wrestling in forever, but didn’t Booker T have the championship for a while back in the 2000’s?

He had the WCW belt when the company still existed, and he had the ‘World Heavyweight Championship’, which was the WCW belt revived with an arrested lineage, for a while in the mid ’00s. He never held the WWE Title proper. Mark Henry also held the WHC belt in 2011, but again, that was a splinter belt, not THE WWE Title.

Yes, I forgot about that. Booker T was the World Heavyweight Champion for about four months in late 2006. He also held the world title in WCW for awhile, as did another black wrestler named Ron Simmons.

Also, Citizen K is right. The title Booker won in ‘06 was NOT the same one Kofi won tonight.

Find a cemetery dating back to the 1800s and count the number of graves for children aged 0-12. Heck, even graves since 1900.

People had gazilions of kids back then to ensure at least one or two survived childhood.

although there are many great views even on the interstates, I would say that the drive down the Columbia River Gorge on I84(?) from Portland thru to The Dalles is exquisite to experience (with Multinomah falls, literally right off the Interstate) and down I81 thru the heart of the Shenandoah is also quite awesome imho.
