Just checked in with the fever swamp at Free Republic. Today’s rants center on Ihlan Omar, AOC, and Pelosi, with Jussie Smollett making a strong comeback. Mayor Pete also rates a couple of attacks that make up in venom and hysteria what they lack in numbers. There are a number of things I like about Buttigieg, but the main one is that he sends the Deplorables into frothing, bug-eyed, carpet-biting fits of rage just by existing.
Congratulations to Prime Minister @NarendraModi and his BJP party on their BIG election victory! Great things are in store for the US-India partnership with the return of PM Modi at the helm. I look forward to continuing our important work together!

I’m hoping for some other TNG characters to make an appearance but I don’t want them to go overboard. Riker and Dr. Crusher would be at the top of my list to appear because of their past history with Picard. Data couldn’t because Spiner is too old now (though I suppose they could de-age him).

Trump is doing what we rather suspected he was going to do: desperately trying to bribe farmers into sticking with the GOP, despite the long-term damage to their ability to export what they grow:
Another ‘Bale Out’: Trump To Pay ‘Patriot Farmers’ Hurting From His Trade War
When the Trump administration announced last year that it was giving farmers hurt by the President’s multi-front trade war a $12 billion “bale out,” the government insisted it would be a one-time event.
Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue announced the news in an interview Thursday morning with Fox Business Network’s Maria Bartiromo.
“We’re having another market facilitation program in 2019, once these [trade] talks [with China] broke down,” he said.
“China’s going to pay for this $16 billion through tariffs coming in,” Perdue asserted, before confirming that the money would really be coming from his department’s Commodity Credit Corporation program.
The question now is: are farmers dumb enough to buy into all this?

Yes. Yes they are.
They aren’t going to care about where the money comes from so long as they’re made whole. They wont care that Trump caused them the harm in the first place. They think that this will make them whole now (it wont, since they’re likely losing that business going forward).

Of course they are. They’re Magats after all. That species is not known for having deep intellectual capacity.

And they really think it is the Chinese who are paying those import tariffs…
In Kansas, some of the farmers are waking up:
“My biggest frustration is there’s no light at the end of the tunnel. There’s nothing out there giving me a glimmer of hope that commodity prices will increase substantially,” Giessel said. “The Chinese have zero reason to come to the table on this on commodities. Why would they want to do anything different? It’s lowered the price of grains.”
This week soybean prices dropped to a ten-year low of less than $8 a bushel in anticipation of Chinese retaliation to U.S. tariffs next month. Wheat, corn and other Midwest staple crops have also experienced drops in price over the last two years.
“If the stock market took that kind of a blip, there’d be people jumping out of buildings,” said Giessel, vice president of the Kansas Farmers Union.
Trump won both Kansas and Missouri by double digits in 2016 with overwhelming support from farm country, but as the president’s trade war drags on farmers have grown increasingly frustrated.
“Does the Kansas City Star allow you to use the word ‘pissed’?” said Blake Hurst, the president of the Missouri Farm Bureau, when asked how farmers were feeling about the hit to soybeans, the state’s biggest crop.

Data was destroyed in the last movie. They could use the “twin”, but it wouldn’t be the same, so hopefully not.
The key grafs come later in the story:
Trump has floated a $15 billion bailout to help farmers hurt by the tariffs. It’s the second straight year the federal government will have to provide billions in assistance to farmers to help them cope with the trade.
Hurst called the prospect of another bailout financially inadequate and psychologically repulsive for farmers in Missouri.
“If they send us a check, we’ll cash it. But no, we’re not going to be happy about it,” Hurst said. “Whatever program they come up with, no way does it cover our losses.”
Giessel said many farmers weren’t made whole by the administration’s previous $12 billion bailout from last year. “They don’t just need to be swinging a bucket of money out here. It better be targeted and it better be a bigger bucket,” Giessel said.
Jenny Burgess, a first generation farmer who grows soybeans, wheat and corn on her farm near Sterling, Kansas, said she and her husband “don’t want to be government-paid farmers” but they’ll have little choice unless the trade dispute resolves.
“We want to stand on our own two feet,” she said.
The crowd that loved to bellow “GOVERNMENT MOTORS!!!” thinks Trump is awesome because he’s bailed out farmers two years in a row.
I grew up on a farm. Both sides of the family were farmers. Went to a school where during recess, we’d wander over to the barbed-wire fence on the north side, next to the swings, and pet the cows who would gather there to stare at us and moo.

Well, had they voted for Clinton, that wouldn’t be a problem. Trump started an idiotic trade war that is costing these farmers dearly.
Clinton wouldn’t have started bulkshit trade wars because she knows how to negotiate without throwing temper tantrums.
Trump’s negotiation style is: extortion, and when that fails, walk out blaming the other side, all while trying to suck up to get them to save face for him.

And within the next hour or so, expect more watches and warnings to come into effect around the NYC metro area (and from Philly all the way through to New Haven and up to Albany and Binghamton).

There’s a clue in the Kansas story that points to how impeachment happens - the farm states need a 67-vote majority to override Trump’s veto on tariffs. The pressure on the GOP senators in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Dakotas, etc. is ramping up. These are states with tiny populations. Even a few thousand vote swing is enough to cost a senator his seat - the one thing that they actually pay attention to.
So: there is an opportunity there for Senate Dems to do some horsetrading; votes for overriding the tariffs in exchange for impeaching Trump, who by then will have completely destroyed the economies of their home states.

Yes, Data died at the end of Nemesis.
HOWEVER, there was an extended universe comic book series released in 2009 that depicted events between Nemesis and the 2009 reboot film. I do not know for sure if it’s considered canon but, in that reboot Data was re-integrated by way of B-4 (the android found in Nemesis who he had transferred his memories to) and eventually became Captain of the Enterprise-E. The Picard show will acknowledge the alternate timeline established in the Abrams films, but personally I do feel a Data return is a bit of a stretch in any circumstance.

A great majority of Indians, forced to inhabit the vast gap between a glossy democratic ideal and a squalid undemocratic reality, have long stored up deep feelings of injury, weakness, inferiority, degradation, inadequacy and envy; these stem from defeats or humiliation suffered at the hands of those of higher status than themselves in a rigid hierarchy.
Jesus wept. There are even parallels to the RWNJ bot-armies that ceaselessly patrol Twitter:
Modi, backed by some of India’s richest people, managed to return to the political mainstream, and, ahead of the 2014 election, he mesmerized aspiring Indians with a flamboyant narrative about his hardscrabble past, and their glorious future. From the beginning, he was careful to present himself to his primary audience of stragglers as one of them: a self-made individual who had to overcome hurdles thrown in his way by an arrogant and venal elite that indulged treasonous Muslims while pouring contempt on salt-of-the-earth Hindus like himself. Boasting of his 56-inch chest, he promised to transform India into an international superpower and to reinsert Hindus into the grand march of history.
Since 2014, Mr. Modi’s near-novelistic ability to create irresistible fictions has been steadily enhanced by India’s troll-dominated social media as well as cravenly sycophantic newspapers and television channels. India’s online population doubled in the five years of Mr. Modi’s rule.
