After this mess, I’m seriously in favor of making a Civics and American History test be mandatory for every damned elected office. I know it’s not practical, but could we at least require a basic working knowledge of the government and the actual JOB they have to do? Also too, laws don’t mean shit if they aren’t enforced. Let’s start with all those ignored supoenas maybe?

I’d have to check, but I’m pretty sure Frum was one of the “NeverTrump” chorus line who was declaring last October that Trump basically had the Dems in a bind as the migrant caravan (aka “the invading hordes”) and the optics thereof were so terrible for them that the party would have to either roll over and give him what he wanted or face electoral losses for looking supportive of “open borders.”

He’s now (of course) part of the same chorus of “NeverTrump” fuckwits trying to tell Dem voters that they need to embrace a moderate like Biden over the “radical” progressives like Harris or Warren.

So, this happened in Kyoto, Japan:

Twelve people are presumed dead, fire officials have said, and more could be missing after becoming trapped by a suspected arson attack at a renowned animation production company in Japan.

Thirty-five others have been injured, some of them critically, said Kyoto fire department official Satoshi Fujiwara.

Police in Kyoto said the fire broke out on Thursday morning at a three-storey building belonging to Kyoto Animation after a man burst in and spread an unidentified flammable liquid that set off the blaze.

The 41-year-old suspect was among the injured and has been taken to a hospital, Kyodo news agency reported.

It happened at Kyoto Animation:

Police said the fire appeared to have been started deliberately. “A man threw a liquid and set fire to it,” a Kyoto prefectural police spokesman said.

Kyoto Animation is renowned for its high-quality anime productions such as Sound! Euphonium, A Silent Voice and Violet Evergarden.

Meanwhile, in Brexit news:

The EU’s chief Brexit negotiator said in an interview to be published on Thursday that he was unimpressed by threats of no-deal Brexit but that if the United Kingdom opted for such a course it would have to face the consequences.

Asked by the BBC what would happen if London tore up its EU membership card, Michel Barnier said: “The UK will have to face the consequences.”

“I think that the UK side, which is well informed and competent and knows the way we work on the EU side, knew from the very beginning that we’ve never been impressed by such a threat,” Barnier said. “It’s not useful to use it”.

He hasn’t been welcome in awhile if ever in his life. Nothing wrong with being black and conservative. But plenty wrong with staying wed to a party whose base hates your guts. I’m reminded of when a black man spoke at a Tea Party function at the peak of the GOPs obsession with ACORN(another bigoted moment in itself) and he was assumed to be an ACORN member or something like that. The GOP is a safe place for racists young and old. That’s what it is. People who can’t accept that the US isn’t an ethno state.

But they are a party whose image of America is based on a White Christian patriarchy.

(I am working on building three new area courses right now with varying crews of friends; sport has grown from 600 to 6,000+ US courses in just the last 20 years.)

I’m also almost 72 years old and most of my thousands of social media friends are younger.

If you’re wondering why impeachment isn’t being proposed by Pelosi, there are Democrats that think that yesterday’s votes backing Pelosi calling Trump a racist were like throwing them under the bus:

“While Democrats were publicly unanimous in their support of the resolution, some moderate lawmakers from Republican-leaning districts that backed Mr. Trump in 2016 privately voiced their discomfort. They said that while the president’s comments had been racist, the party was playing into his hands by spending so much time condemning his remarks, according to centrist lawmakers and senior aides who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe internal discussions.

They were particularly angry about being asked to vote to condone Ms. Pelosi’s breach of the rules, which two of them described as throwing moderate lawmakers “under the bus” in order to help the speaker shore up support among progressives who had been alienated by her feud with Ms. Ocasio-Cortez and her allies. One lawmaker described the upshot of the extraordinary episode as “another week burned on his terms instead of ours.”

New Jersey Judge Who Showed Leniency To Rape Suspect From ‘Good Family’ Resigns

After several New Jersey judges came under nationwide scrutiny for troubling remarks during separate sexual assault cases, the state Supreme Court this week announced the resignation of one judge, proceedings to remove another, and new training about sexual violence for all judges in the state.

The New Jersey Supreme Court confirmed to The New York Times Wednesday that it had accepted the resignation of Judge James Troiano, who in 2018 granted leniency to a 16-year-old rape suspect in part because he came from a “good family” and attended “an excellent school”

And today we learn whether Judge Berman grants Epstein bail in his child sex trafficking case.

Based on the evidence and what we know so far, he shouldn’t get bail. Compared to R Kelly, who sits in jail awaiting trial as he was denied bail, Epstein’s criminal conduct is magnitudes worse and far more troubling - as it was enabled with sweetheart deals with prosecutors and witness intimidation continues to this day. Then there’s the matter of passports suggesting that he either has fake documents, or he’s a citizen of more than just the US making his flight risk even greater.

Yeah, under no circumstances should Epstein get bail, just on the basis of that right there alone.

Sure, he might have surrendered one passport, but what if he has other passports, from different countries, under different names? He’s certainly got the dough that he could afford to buy one, and a real one…..a bribe of a couple million $$$ would work in more than a few places around the world.

Yep. Turns out that, quelle surprise, they’re not random, nor are they your standard conservatives, they’re a full on activist group in support of Trump. And they’ve been used as a whole for at least 4 different CNN panels, all of them presenting the women as simple random panels of concerned conservative women.

Ok this is weird. They showed this panel on our local Atlanta CBS affiliate yesterday afternoon/evening as part of the news programming discussing politics, but there was nothing identifiable in the screen that it came from CNN. They didn’t show the whole thing, just the parts about them supporting him even if he is a racist shit. The discussion was about how liberals are messing up by pointing this shit out when there’s so much to do. This is where I turned it off. I’m still weirded out by that whole thing .

Just a random group of ‘Republicans’? CNN doesn’t tell the whole story about a Trump-loving panel

The group calls itself the Trumpettes of America 2019 Palm Beach Team, although CNN and correspondent Randi Kaye didn’t mention anything about such a group. Nor did the anchors, including Anderson Cooper, who introduced Kaye’s report.

you’re right about some of the voters

in fact i wrote to Postcards to Voters to suggest the following:

Like your Vote by Mail campaign, maybe consider a similar type of campaign reminding voters to verify their voter registration status. This can often be done via the internet.

- All over the country, there is a concerted effort to remove people from the voter rolls.
- Additionally, people move and don’t remember to update their registration.
- And there are other reasons as well.

This could be helpful in down times - when no elections are pending. And also in, say, the month or two before a particular jurisdiction’s registration deadline approaches.

Since 2015, CNN has distorted its on air product to present far right views as mainstream and to present paid-for or curated pro-trump commentary as just a slice of life among Republicans. You can read about it in Jason Miller’s deposition.

I recall in 2015 when Trump was bragging about how exciting his rallies wehre while people were falling asleep at Jeb Bush rallies.

20 minutes later CNN aired an interview with a woman who said she had fallen asleep at a Bush rally.

That was about the last time I paid any attention to CNN as a source of news.

I gave up on CNN when their stooge set up Dukakis in the 1988 debate.

It was a difficult question, but if Dukakis has been faster on his feet he could have answered it. Mario Cuomo had no trouble answering the exact same question when local papers asked him the next morning.

For those too young to remember:

The question was “you say you’re against the death penalty, but what if it was for someone who raped and murdered your wife?” Dukakis sort of stuttered and stammered, and in the end had nothing useful to bring to the topic.

Cuomo’s answer was “the guys who mugged my mother and put her in the hospital, if you’d put me in a room alone with them I’d have dismembered them myself. But the dispassionate, considered decision of a court of law has to be more civilized than the visceral reaction of an angry son.”

In previous elections, Collins received 30-40% of her funding from Maine donors. She had a strong base of support in the southern, more progressive region of the state. That support is gone. In the first quarter of fundraising this year, 1% of her donors were from Maine. In the second quarter, it was 3%.

Between the fake passport, availability of aircraft and probably undisclosed funds, there was no way this Judge was going to risk letting him out.

Exactly; he’d hope on a private aircraft with some other passport and up and disappear. Granted, there’d be an Interpol Red Notice on his ass super fast, but he’d have a solid head start.

The judge indicated that the charges themselves warranted remanding to custody until trial. The additional factors of the passport (not known if fake or not), wealth, cash, funds, and flight risk, all weighed to keep him in custody.

Asking them to “go back where they came from” is racist in that it implies that non-whites do not belong in America at all, much less in Congress

With that wording, as far as history is concerned, only brown and red skin should be able to stay. Native Americans (which I include Central America as Natives) were here long before the white people IMMIGRATED here.

re: #121 The Pie Overlord!

Here is a thread about why Trumporrhoid Evangelical anti-Semites are so obsessed with calling other people “anti-Semites”

That’s a very good summary, Ms. Babushka (I don’t care what Twitter calls you, unless you prefer Pie Overlord now, then I’ll call you Ms. Overlord because I respect your nouns).

I would add one thing though.

Re-posting this tweet from Rabbi Ruttenberg you put up (thread, twelve tweets):

As far as I’m aware, there is no branch of Judaism which wishes me dead because of my lack of faith in any god. I imagine some Jews might chose not to associate with me, but that’s fine if that’s what they choose to do. No branch of Judaism is trying to take away my rights (or anyone else’s) in the USA as far as I am aware, because of the very long history and experience of Jews having that done to them.

That is not true of Christianity. While individual Christians may call out Evangelicals, no church organisation does. The United Methodists or Episcopalians or Roman Catholics or whatnot as organisations all remain silent on hate preachers who would take other people’s rights or exploit Jews or others for their theological claims.

There are plenty of mainstream Christians who would call me an anti-Semite if I voiced the opinion “I don’t support some people in the Israeli government” (which they would equate with “I hate Jews”).

Muslims in this country for the overwhelming majority also wouldn’t have an issue with me. There are countries where I would be arrested (and in Saudi Arabia, considered a terrorist worthy of the death penalty re: their new anti-terrorism law).

As someone else noted, “how dare you cherry-pick Bible verses to counter my cherry-picked Bible verses.” There are far too many Bible verses which say what should be done about people like me.

I haven’t met many Jews in person outside the military, but I don’t recall any of them coming to my house on Friday before Shabbat pounding on my door asking me to convert, or threatening me with eternal hell if I don’t (regardless of how “hell” is defined).

re: #143 sagehen

I would immediately answer the same way. Opposition to the state killing people can’t be just for people I think “need killin’”—because everyone has a different opinion of who “needs killin’.”

My wife was pro-death penalty before she met me; she’s come round to my position on the death penalty not being appropriate (nor fiscally conservative, nor sparing innocent people occasionally caught up in it). I’ve had discussions with her about if something like that was to happen to me: If she was to give some sort of victim impact statement to a court, she would state my opposition to the death penalty and why she wouldn’t want vengeance with someone else’s death.

That’s not the case if I come across someone attempting to kill her or any other person; I will use any means necessary to come to the defence of another.

Not only do we not recruit, we make conversion really difficult even for people who of their own free will want it more than anything.

There’s years of study, then you have to pass examination by a panel of rabbis (almost like a thesis defense), then there’s a bunch of rituals, and for men there’s painful physical procedures. Maybe you need surgery, or if you were already circumcised for non-religious reasons they’ll do a symbolic “circumcision” that requires sticking pins in your dick until you bleed.

Would-be converts have to prove they really, really mean it.

People who want to fake-convert to Christianity find it simple — say the magic words, they sprinkle water on your forehead, and it’s done.

I don’t know how to feel about this.
I mean… I agree with Piers Morgan.
I think I need to take a break and reevaluate my life.

“But to actually watch and hear a large gathering of thousands of predominantly white Americans chanting such a blatant infamous racist trope about a democratically elected fellow American made me shudder. Then it made me angry,” Morgan said. “This should not be happening in modern America.”

I agree with him. But, frankly he has no.f’ing.right. to feel anything but guilt.

Christianity lost much when it took Paul’s path instead of that of James, brother of Jesus.

I heard Harris try to explain her Medicare for All position in a CNN interview a few days ago. Not impressed. She couldn’t even make it past the “how are you going to do that without massively increasing taxes?”

Not that it was in any way effective, but it’s John McCain. We all know how Trump feels about the late Senator McCain.

She was calling President Obama an Arab.

McCain didn’t let her finish. Instead, he shook his head, took the microphone away from her and did something that would have seemed unimaginable during the most recent presidential election: He politely defended his opponent.

“No, ma’am. He’s a decent family man, citizen, that I just happen to have disagreements with on fundamental issues, and that’s what this campaign issue is all about,” he said, prompting applause from some other audience members at the gathering in Minnesota.

The short exchange was a shining moment for McCain that gained attention at the time. Instead of indulging in his supporter’s falsehood, he corrected her and showed grace toward his political foe. And it wasn’t an isolated moment.

At the same rally, the crowd earlier had booed McCain’s response to another supporter who said that Obama “cohorts with domestic terrorists” and that Americans would have to fear an Obama presidency. McCain said Obama was a “decent person” and that there would be no reason to be scared if he won the White House.

can someone explain how some guy throws a bottle of flammable liquid into a building, and the entire thing goes up before apparently anyone is able to get out a fire door? I assume they have building codes in Japan?

I’m trying to figure out which one of them was the one I heard on the radio claiming to be “brown.” The tanning booth “blonde,”
maybe?

re: #170 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

some positive news, I was really expecting him to be let out

fortunately a different judge than Roger Stone’s. Otherwise, we’d be getting a line about “what should the court do with you?” after which the answer would apparently be nothing.

re: #206 Michele: Out of the closet, Into the fire

Works for me. Especially after all the crap Manafort pulled while he was in “solitary confinement”.

he’d be dead inside a week in gen pop. he won’t be able to pay for protection because all his assets will be frozen on the assumption that there will be civil asset forfeiture through multiple lawsuits.

well, some good news at least. Turns out that Hoopla is slowly getting 3 book boxed sets of Don Pendleton’s Executioner series into the system. Next up, “Sergeant Mercy,” the Executioner, takes out the Parisian mob in Continental Contract. Hard for me to imagine Mac Bolan wouldn’t be firing some rpg’s into a presidential motorcade by this point, but I guess he survived the Nixon years without killing any politicians, so he’d probably figure we’ll survive even this.
