Denver grandkid starts his ski lessons next weekend. Mom bought a package that lets him trade his gear up as he grows.

Junior trade. I worked for two winters in a very large ski shop in the Denver area which I won’t name, and I’ll tell y’all, kids skis are a pain in the ass for a ski tech. That said, it was always nice to hand over the equipment to the kids and see how excited they get. 🙂

In other news, the House passed H.Res.296 acknowledging the Armenian Genocide by a vote of 405 to 11:

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly on Tuesday to recognize the mass killings of Armenians a century ago as a genocide, a symbolic but historic vote instantly denounced by Turkey.

The Democratic-controlled House voted 405-11 in favor of a resolution asserting that it is U.S. policy to commemorate as genocide the killing of 1.5 million Armenians by the Ottoman Empire from 1915 to 1923. The Ottoman Empire was centered in present-day Turkey.

This is certainly one of the fallouts from the 2018 election — Nancy Pelosi was always going to put this to a vote when conditions were favorable.

There’s a story from the NYT that had an interesting tidbit:

On Capitol Hill, the passage of the measure was a rare bipartisan moment on the House floor at a time when House Democrats’ impeachment inquiry has exacerbated a partisan rift.

Representative Michael McCaul of Texas, the top Republican on the Foreign Affairs Committee, who in recent weeks has bitterly dueled with Democrats over the investigation, crossed the floor to hug Ms. Pelosi and offer Mr. Schiff a handshake in celebration as spectators in the gallery stood to cheer the bill’s passage.

They’re getting an “adult dose” of winter weather this week. They shouldn’t get too freaked, winters are generally pretty mild along the Front Range, known for lots of sunny days and average temperatures in the 40s and 50s. Though sometimes freak upslope snowstorms move through, those are doozies, with snow measured in feet. Those suck, shuts the whole city down for days.

Big UFC shows draw rich people to buy the very expensive tickets.

Plus Dana White is a Trumper - remember he was at the convention.

Many UFC fighters come from cultures that adore strong men type of leaders.

So yes, UFC is more a Trump crowd than MLB.

Still, as I noted if Dwayne Johnson shows up (Unless I’ve mixed up UFC shows), he is definitely not one of those right-wing nuts. He’s Hollywoods current leading man and his price tag is high, so I doubt that UFC will want anything to mar his appearance.

On H.L. Mencken, Michael Gerson and Evangelicals in Public Life
by Martin Longman

I read the Gerson column, and found Longman’s discussion of it worthwhile, too.

The big difference, of course, is that unlike Donald Trump, William Jennings Bryan never won a presidential election. This is the primary reason that Trump is the bigger threat. Another reason is that Bryan pursued at least some policies that would genuinely help the little guy. Trump never does that.

On the whole, however, once you reject science and the reality-based world, you can be led down any path. One day Trump will be gone and evangelicals will be led in a new direction.

There’s probably some labor involved too. Not a lot, but I’m always amused by helpful articles that tell you to order steak when you eat out because the mark up over the cost of the ingredients is less than, say, a salad. Which is silly. I eat out for one of 2 reasons. The first i s practical, I’m out somewhere and need to eat. The second is that I want something which is creative and/or labor intensive. I’m paying for someone else to actually do more than grilling a steak.

Boil them. Smash them (mashed coarsely.) Drizzle lemon juice over them. The acid turns them pink where the lemon juice hits.

Also buy ones that are purple all the way through-and don’t boil them with regular potatoes because for whatever reason it fades the color drastically, even with just a small amount of white or yellow potatoes.

Also, recognition of the Armenian Genocide cuts across ideological lines for the most part - it’s pretty well-documented (and was, even at the time of its occurrence) even though the Turks still passionately argue that it never happened, largely out of a sense of national pride.

There’s also a growing sense that Turkey is no longer the stalwart and reliable ally that it once was and Congressional recognition of the Armenian Genocide is intended to send a message to Erdoğan.

The Armenian Genocide was a terrible crime. If Trump had not betrayed the Kurds, would this bill have ever been brought to a vote? Congress would have been interested in pacifying the Turks and not passing legislation that could affect our relationship.

Unfortunately, I really don’t see this as being an issue for him. Given the pretty hard right lean of the general MMA press I’ve encountered, added to the *very* hard rightward lean of notable MMA personalities, I really don’t see his base and the general MMA fans as being all that dissimilar.

I mean, when Joe Rogan is considered one of the more “thoughtful” commentators in the genre, and the wildly misogynistic and violent Jon Koppenhaver, (or War Machine, *eyroll*), who did time for 20+ felonies, including rape and kidnapping, is defended as a guy who “did nothing wrong,” I think we’re pretty solidly in pro trump, pro-fascist country.

I understand that it’s all part of the international dance of diplomacy and whatnot, but the only real asset Turkey provides for the US is the İncirlik Air Base and control of the Bosporus. And frankly, the Bosporus thing may not be quite so critical as it once was, given the utterly decrepit state of the Russian Navy these days and the fact that Russia is a broke-ass country that would be hard put to modernize their Navy, no matter how much they may desperately want to.

Bringing the Russian Navy up to modern, 21st century blue-water standards is something they simply can’t afford to do.

FFS.

U.S. President Donald Trump reportedly called South Korea a “major abuser” and claimed the U.S. ally should pay 60 billion dollars a year for the stationing of American troops in the country.

Guy Snodgrass, former chief speechwriter and communications director for former U.S. Defense Secretary James Mattis, made the claim in his memoir “Holding the Line: Inside Trump’s Pentagon with Secretary Mattis,” published on Tuesday.

Snodgrass recounts two meetings between Trump and his national security team at the Pentagon in July 2017 and January 2018 where the U.S. president repeatedly questioned the value of stationing U.S. troops overseas.

Snodgrass writes that Trump asked top officials, including then-Defense Secretary Mattis and then-Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, whether troops could be withdrawn from countries such as South Korea, Japan and Germany.

Trump reportedly said at the July 2017 meeting that South Korea has been a major abuser and that China and South Korea rip the U.S. off left and right.

Trump was also quoted as saying in January 2018 that if South Korea paid the U.S. 60 billion dollars a year to keep American troops on the Korean Peninsula, then it’s an “okay deal.”

South Korea is paying one-point-38 trillion won this year for the upkeep of U.S. troops on the Korean Peninsula, but the U.S. is reportedly seeking as much as five billion dollars next year.

Not enough to get them to vote Democratic but if it lowers their overall turnout, that will hurt the GOP as their strategy is centered around getting their base out in strong numbers while suppressing other voters.

When it dropped down at Nasa’s Kennedy Space Center over the weekend, it brought an end to the 780-day mission that is the longest ever carried out by the reusable vehicle.

For many Republicans—including some who oppose the impeachment inquiry—the smears of Vindman were a bridge too far. Sens. Mitt Romney (R-UT) and John Thune (R-SC), Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY), and other Republican members of Congress declared that it was unacceptable for the administration and its allies to treat someone of Vindman’s high reputation like that.

Of course, if he’s a credible fellow, then that means that his testimony is credible. And if his testimony is credible, and he says there was definitely a quid pro quo, then where does that leave us? It’s getting harder and harder to support the witnesses in the impeachment inquiry without supporting the inquiry itself. (Z)

Everything turning sideways, and Trump’s last refuge has been a stable economy despite his idiotic trade war doing tremendous damage. If this trend continues, Trump will be toast and the economy is usually a good indicator of reelection success by an incumbent in normal times (and these are anything but normal times).

And not one single move they’ve made has made conservatives treat them as more legitimate than when they first got attacked as ‘liberal media’.

I remember that site. Didn’t know they went out of business. The insane thing to me is we get scrutinity of the media by people who are the media themselves. FNC and Breitbart want to portray a narrative of themselves as scrappy underdogs fighting against elites. Murdoch is certainly an elite and so are the Mercers and Bannon. Saw Ted Cruz try to say “Well the fans that booed Trump are just Washington elites.” Trump was literally in a skybox with the Republican leader of the House and other elected officials and he was booed from the bleachers. Elite is just another word that the right is eager to twist the meaning of sort of like “fake news.”

Unlike Nixon, the Dems have had “the goods” on Trump for weeks for one simple reason: The stupid fuck admitted his crimes out loud on live TV. Even at the very end of it all, Nixon never admitted his crimes and instead chose to resign before he could be impeached.

All that Dems have really been doing since Sept has been picking apart Donny’s entire defense strategy piece by piece, building a case so airtight that it could be used as a space capsule. That there are ready to move to the public phase of all that says only one thing: They have “the goods” and are ready to display them to the entire nation.

when an R president cant get a nomination past an R senate confirmation

from the WSJ

“Now, the White House is considering a plan allowing the administration to change the line of succession at the department to bypass the vacancies statute and appoint Mr. Cuccinelli or another pick. White House officials have asked the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel if such a plan is legal, one of the people familiar with the plan said.”

two items to note that burn me:

- just because the OLC says it’s ok doesnt make it legal. In this environment, with this AG, it’s almost, but not quite like asking your own lawyer for permission.

- even if/when a president breaks a mold and does something that’s not been done before, that doesnt make it some unassailable precedent for all future presidents. (leaving aside IOKIYAR). one reason is it could be a patent abuse of power the current DOJ refuses to rein in, but a future one wouldn’t. A second is that by that logic, whatever it is you are doing new is breaking with all the previous precedents, so it obviously works both ways.

Further, if you’re going to cash in on the Antichrist accusation, it would be hard to think of a better candidate than Trump. A major pulpit pimp could even cite his previous support for Trump as evidence, the evil one was so diabolically clever that “even the elect might be deceived.”
I think Pat Robertson just might be first to jump ship on Trump. He has a minor history of going rogue, as when he admonished young Earth creationists that they just made Christians look foolish. The moving average is showing a significant slowdown in manufacturing. Recession in manufacturing.

Overall growth is the kind that Trump used to raise red flags about - that it was a huge disaster and that he could do so much better.

Most of this is attributable to Trump’s idiotic trade wars. His economic policies are a disaster and he and his corrupt know nothing admin are busy trying to blame the Fed for the problem, not that Trump’s policies brought this about.

The Fed has been trying to slowly increase interest rates over time (giving them room to act if there’s an actual crisis). Trump’s policies greatly undercut that and the Fed has had to reverse course to reduce interest rates.

They’re also busy trying to keep the credit markets liquid. None of this is particularly good news.

So while the S&P and DJIA continue to hover around their highs, the fundamentals are showing signs of significant weakness.

I’m not sure how old Robert Jeffress is but I imagine both of them are around the same age that Pat and Jerry Falwell Sr were when they helped make Reagan the WEP’s hero and the same age Billy Graham was when he became friendly with Nixon though Nixon never as far as I know was seen as a representative of WEP virtue the way Reagan and Trump are.

The elephant in the room that I don’t think Gerson seems to see is that the problem is with WEP culture. This is a man himself who came to Evangelical Christianity as a Reagan admirer. I’ll be blunt here. Reagan was an asshole to women the same way Trump is and his piety was just as fake as Donnie’s. But they embraced him over an actual Evangelical who understood religion. Evangelicals want to make the political leaders they support the voice of God and that was true under Reagan, W Bush, and now Trump and likewise they want to make their political adversaries whether that be Carter, the Clintons, Obama, or whoever the Dems nominate next Summer out to be the voice of Satan. There is no middle ground with them. It literally is biblical good and evil to them. And that comes from how their preachers preach to them.

The Pitchforks Are Coming… For Us Plutocrats

If we don’t do something to fix the glaring inequities in this economy, the pitchforks are going to come for us. No society can sustain this kind of rising inequality. In fact, there is no example in human history where wealth accumulated like this and the pitchforks didn’t eventually come out. You show me a highly unequal society, and I will show you a police state. Or an uprising. There are no counterexamples. None. It’s not if, it’s when.

(snip)

What everyone wants to believe is that when things reach a tipping point and go from being merely crappy for the masses to dangerous and socially destabilizing, that we’re somehow going to know about that shift ahead of time. Any student of history knows that’s not the way it happens. Revolutions, like bankruptcies, come gradually, and then suddenly. One day, somebody sets himself on fire, then thousands of people are in the streets, and before you know it, the country is burning. And then there’s no time for us to get to the airport and jump on our Gulfstream Vs and fly to New Zealand. That’s the way it always happens. If inequality keeps rising as it has been, eventually it will happen. We will not be able to predict when, and it will be terrible—for everybody. But especially for us.

You didn’t answer my question. What has happened since he’s become President? Better yet look at what’s happened in the past month. Support for impeachment is way up. It took some time but he’s not in a good spot right now. You’re focused only on what happened before November 2016 when he was a blank slate presidentially. GOP continues defending him and spewing claptrap and deflecting/projecting like IMAX to claim Democrats are doing the very crimes that Trump has already admitted to openly and on video. It’s DARVO/IOKIYAR all rolled into one.

The media isn’t helping either, as they continue to magic balance fairy the hell out of things, when none of what Trump is doing has an equivalent anywhere in our history.

In the summer, we were wondering if Pelosi would ever move forward with impeachment. Now impeachment is inevitable IMO. Removal? Yeah I don’t know yet but Pelosi and the Dems seem quite adapt at giving him his own rope to hang himself with. Trump was at his most unpredictable politically to beat when he was an empty slate. We are about to enter our fourth year of his presidency in January. Bringing up what happened in 2015-16 is nice but it’s not what is happening now and what is happening now will tell us what will happen to his re-election chances. People who doom and gloom can’t say objectively anything he’s doing that will help his chances. He’s done a lot to hurt his chances and we’re going to see the fruit of that this and especialy next fall.

I really think you greatly overestimate him as President. He hasn’t done a damn thing to increase public opinion in his favor while President. You keep on going back and I understand why to when he was a candidate. My argument is that it was easier for him to manipulate the narrative when he was a candidate because no one actually knew what his presidency was going to be like. We’ve had three years of rage tweets, stupid bragging, trashing allies, etc. It’s going to be at a bitch to portray himself as the savior when he now has to defend his record.

337
HappyWarrior  Oct 30, 2019 • 10:05:38am

I just think we have to separate “Candidate Trump”, “Nominee Trump”, and “President Trump.” The latter hasn’t shown anything to me that suggests he can fix the narrative in his favor. We shouldn’t underestimate him but we shouldn’t treat him like Machiavelli either.

He tried wagging the dog with al-Baghdadi, and ended up getting booed at a World Series game. Hell, he literally tried wagging the dog with the dog that got injured in the raid and was mocked. Support for impeachment is growing by the day. White House aides are testifying against him at this point.

So, what can he do to turn things around? Embrace the liberal agenda? Suddenly turn into Mr. Nice Guy? Legalize weed?

Honestly. Attitudes toward Trump have been baking in for three years. There’s no way he’s going to make any move to turn things around that’s going to be seen as the least bit sincere.
