U.S. will leave up to 600 troops in northeast Syria to prevent ISIS resurgence, top general says https://t.co/7QL4DeB103

I’ve loved this song from the day the album came out.
WaPo article about Nikki’s “book” has close to 7,000 comments so far, vast majority of them calling her out for the soulless, hideous toady she has always been.

To be fair, at the height of the “caliphate” there were only 2000 US troops there. The real question is do we have any partners on the ground still willing to work with us?

Those first three or four TMBG albums are the apotheosis of surrealist pop. I don’t enjoy them as much now as when I found them in the 90s, but that’s more shifting taste than due to any deficiency.
Also I’m the only person I know that gets strongly worked up about Hotel Detective.
Oh hell, have one more.

It’s a big worry. And it will truly die if those who can do something about it don’t. That’s why we have to do everything to win next year.
Did a dry run of a simple telescope rig for tomorrow’s transit of Mercury. If it’s a holiday, and clear, East Coast lizards can see it starting at dawn, continuing until about 1330. Eyepiece projection is the way to go for safety.
The Trump administration has fully restored American tradition of supporting and fomenting coups in Latin America and that’s perfectly alright with U.S. media.

Beto served as a City Council member for 6 years, Mayor Pro Temp for 1 year, and in the House for six.
That’s pretty comparable to Klobuchar, who’s been a senator for 12 years and a County attorney for 8 before that. Kamala Harris has two years as a senator and 15 years as a DA or AG.

I’ve played with it a little, but I’m considering implementing the logic engine for use in another language. But the problem I am trying to solve is the best way to code up a system based on a bunch of rules. It’s a system that receives and sends data. These types of systems generally involve a lot of the following:
1. If you receive message x from source y, possibly store some data and possibly forward the message to z.
2. If, when you store data value a, if it has a certain value, or it and another value combine to match some pattern, the perform a set of steps, which might include sending data somewhere else.
What I would love to figure out is how to have a higher level language, where I just write out all of these rules independently - basically without having to thread the rules together myself - and have an engine properly act on the inputs and outputs in an efficient way.

Germany had snow at elevations over 1000 meters.
I never ran across the term “oak mast” before, but it must be related to the German word for pig fodder, Schweinemast, from back in the days when the drove heards of pigs through the forest to graze on fallen acorns.
re: #139 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))
Probably so. I leaned the term when I moved to Texas. And there is a heavy German influence here. Especially in CenTex. We live in the midst of a huge Live Oak Mott. We get acorns in the fall and the leaves drop in the spring. I love them but they are filthy trees as their cycle goes. 2/3 of the property just goes wild. We keep the last acre around the house maintained.

Germany had snow at elevations over 1000 meters.
I never ran across the term “oak mast” before, but it must be related to the German word for pig fodder, Schweinemast, from back in the days when the drove heards of pigs through the forest to graze on fallen acorns.
It occurs pretty early in English/Irish. It’s found in the bardic times.

I tried that once in AZ, voting in the primary for Evan Mecham, a Mormon Pontiac dealer, whom I considered the weakest GOP candidate.
Problem was that an Independent candidate split the Democratic vote and Mecham won with a plurality. He went on to be an absolute incompetent and embarrassment for the state, and retired before being impeached.

Thin, high clouds here might screw up the first stage of the Mercury transit.
re: #151 Decatur Deb
Sky watchers around the world will get the chance to witness a ‘rare celestial event’ today, as the planet Mercury passes in front of the sun for the first time in 13 years.
This event, known as a ‘transit’, will be visible from nearly everywhere on Earth with the right equipment - depending on cloud cover.
The transit starts at 11:35 GMT (04:35 PST) and will last for about 5.5 hours, so there will be plenty of time to catch the show.
In the UK amateur astronomical societies and public observatories will be running events where members of the public can safely enjoy the transit by viewing it through specialist equipment.
I won’t even see the sun today. Good luck and I hope the clouds pass. Snow scheduled for after dark, I am trying to get all my firewood put up before then.
Two people have been killed after a speeding red Porsche Boxster crashed and flew into the second floor of a commercial building in New Jersey on Sunday morning.Braden DeMartin, 22, was driving the $50,000 car that hit a center median, struck an embankment and lurched into the building, killing himself and friend Daniel Foley, 23.
The sports car rammed into the second floor wall, more than 15 feet above ground, of the unoccupied Exit Realty building in Toms River.

Help me because i am totally confused about Bolton:
- he wants the courts to decide whether he can answer the subpoena and testify or not
- and he’s writing a book
so assume he doesnt testify, mostly because timing is a factor and the courts are slow.
- could he include what he would have testified to in the book?
- ie impeachment related, and/or ukraine-gate
——- I dont see how because that would be absurd
- what about anything / everything else - ie general stuff
——- i dont see how he could write a book at all if he wouldnt agree to testify about the exact same things to congress
- because he, and everyone are taking an all or nothing approach - not appearing at all vs appearing and declining to answer certain questions.
- if he does include all or a lot of this stuff in the book then the system is truly nuts
- if not, then likely it’s just another book of dirt, just new stories & mostly meaningless
good morning all

Good morning from the Texas Hill County. I’m currently having coffee outside on the deck. It’s a lovely and balmy 65’. Good God, the stupid is strong with this one. I know she didn’t go to law school, but this is just dumb, or her lawyers didn’t properly inform her of (a) the chances and (b) the pitfalls. The chances are slim to none that she could prove to a jury that Clinton defamed her, given that Clinton has never named her Clinton named her, but it could be construed as an opinion. On top of that, Tulsi is a public figure and she has to show not only that the statement is defamatory, but that it was made with actual malice (an extremely difficult standard to meet). The pitfalls are that discovery is a bitch. You don’t think that Clinton’s crackerjack attorneys aren’t going to ask for copies of every single piece of digital and paper detritus, down to her drycleaning bills, to show that she’s consorting with the Russians? You know they will.

*drily* you mean the 21st Century version of the Know Nothings?
The Native American Party, renamed the American Party in 1855 and commonly known as the Know Nothing movement, was an American nativist political party that operated nationally in the mid-1850s. It was primarily anti-Catholic, xenophobic, and hostile to immigration, starting originally as a secret society. The movement briefly emerged as a major political party in the form of the American Party. Adherents to the movement were to reply “I know nothing” when asked about its specifics by outsiders, thus providing the group with its common name.

Nothing Trump spews at that conference will deflect from what happens during the impeachment hearings. Media outlets should monitor Trump’s nonsensical ramblings in case he admits to more crimes, but stick to impeachment coverage live.
Then, they can run Trump’s presser as time permits and only after running it past fact checkers who can identify Trump lies and put those in the accompanying chyrons.
Trump’s hoping to deflect and dodge. It’s all he knows to do as he commits more crimes to cover for other crimes.

No Other President Would Have Survived Defrauding Veterans’ Charities
by David Atkins November 11, 2019
One of the many perversities of the Trump era is the low bar to which presidential accountability has now become set. We are currently watching unfold the saga of presidential bribery and extortion of a foreign power in order to sabotage a domestic opponent, and to pursue an outrageous conspiracy theory designed to exonerate a hostile foreign power to which that president remains shockingly solicitous. Taken together with the Mueller probe (and it’s all of a piece), it’s the greatest presidential scandal in American history.
But it should still leave us speechless that only a few days ago the President of the United States was held liable by judge of defrauding veterans to the tune of millions of dollars via a fake charity he used for vainglorious personal and campaign expenses.

The whole concept is silly on its face. Before 9-11-01, I visited the nearest border town. The single string of barbed wire disappeared within sight of the border official crossing. There was no ‘crisis’ at the border. The people who pulled off 9-11 flew here. Over barbed wire and all kinds of walls.

I suspect one of the things that will come out of this whole fiasco is court rulings stating that while executive privilege exists, the president doesn’t actually hold the privilege, that it is the people who advise them that hold the privilege and that the decision to testify or otherwise disseminate the information is their choice not the president’s.

Well, with all due respect to Sen. Schumer*, I’d say “good riddance” to the prospect of Peter King (R-IRA) retiring: but the bigger issue isn’t King - or the (so far) 20 other GOPer Reps. not going to return for the 117th - but who is going to replace them. Since in this day and age, any replacement for a Republican is only too likely to be considerably worse than the (any) incumbent.
Unfortunately, given the pervasive gerrymandering (and persistent political attitudes) in so much of “red” America, it’s hard to see the Democrats making the sort of electoral gains at the House-district level that would, say, lead to an FDR-style supermajority in the House (and never mind the Senate).
* And, as much as I like Chuck, I’d say in this particular instance, the answer is “not much”
re: #236 KGxvi
These guys are saying 101, but I think they might be double counting districts where a Republican retired and a Democrat won an open seat.
When President Trump took office in January 2017, there were 241 Republicans in the House.
Since then, 101 have either been defeated/retired/otherwise left office or are retiring in 2020. (h/t @Dchinni)— Dave Wasserman (@Redistrict) November 11, 2019

Unfortunately, given the pervasive gerrymandering (and persistent political attitudes) in so much of “red” America, it’s hard to see the Democrats making the sort of electoral gains at the House-district level that would, say, lead to an FDR-style supermajority in the House (and never mind the Senate).* And, as much as I like Chuck, I’d say in this particular instance, the answer is “not much”
Here’s what we know, in 2018, there were 16 open races that flipped parties. The Democrats were +10 in those races (they went 13-3).
Republicans held 28 open seats (compared to 18 by the Democrats). Of those freshmen congresspeople, the only name I recognize is Dan Crenshaw. But he seems to be one of the more camera thirty members of the new GOP crew.

Morning! I’m in Tijuana today covering a congressional delegation here. Sen Duckworth is spending Veteran’s Day here celebrating with veterans who have been deported.
Fox Spin:
Sen. Duckworth neglects Veterans’ Day parade to visit deported illegals in Mexico!!!

Just a reminder on Veterans Day: We are still blocked by Donald Trump. https://t.co/91vQDmW6Mj

A couple of thoughts on the redistricting issue, as well…
1. obviously Democrats need to be focusing on state legislative and gubernatorial elections in this cycle. The census will be next year and redistricting will happen in 2021 for the 2022 elections. To ensure fairness, the Dems need either a majority in one chamber of the legislature or to have a governor willing to veto bullshit maps.
2. winning the presidency, House, and Senate could help this process as well. A new voting rights act could (arguably under the 14th Amendment, based on either the first or second section) prohibit partisan gerrymandering. That could end up in Court, and who knows how the Supreme Court would come done on such a case, even with Congress specifically stating it is using it’s powers under the 14th Amendment.
3. in states that allow referendums people can/should be pushing for non-partisan committees to draw lines.
I’m glad I watched that Godzilla movie last night because I’m on call until 05:00 PT tomorrow morning, and I’ve already been called to a line once. I do not understand why we don’t have more people working on a holiday when the stock market is open.
The Godzilla movie I watched last night was Shin Godzilla aka “Godzilla Resurgence.” It’s a reboot of the 1954 Godzilla by Toho Studios in Japan and came out in 2016 between the 2014 US Godzilla and the Godzilla King of the Monsters from this year. The 2014 movie’s great success gave Toho the impetus to do this movie, and I’m glad they did.
My biggest complaint, my overwhelming complaint about American Godzilla movies is that they seem to all have their action filmed at night through a hazy lens. Yeah, I know it’s all CGI and all, but the one thing about Japanese Godzilla is they don’t fuzz things up and Godzilla stomps around during the day. This has been the case since the beginning.
With Shin Godzilla, Toho returned to the roots of Godzilla—a strange, alien monster from the deep that feeds off radiation, causes incredible damage and doesn’t even care about what is in its path. This is very different from the American Godzilla movies, which seem to cast Godzilla as kinda sorta helping out the puny humans against the other “Titans.” (I do have to admit that calling them Titans, harking back to the gods before the Greek gods we know and love is actually a great thing. It gives a feel for the ancient nature of the critters.) The movie also is very Japanese in that it shows how responding to a crisis in Japan involves layers and layers of government bureaucracy. And yes, this is a response to the twin disasters of the tsunami and Fukushima nuclear meltdown.
One of the complaints I heard about the movie is that there was no character development. That is true if you just consider all the people in the movie-there really is no character development, no backstory, except for *maybe* one character. HOWEVER, if you consider Japan the country as the character, then there’s huge character development. And that’s the way you have to approach this movie. Japan is the character.
What I liked about this movie:
* Godzilla stomps during the day, with no fuzzy lenses.
* The night scene when Godzilla comes into its full power is clear and chilling.
* The music is very appropriate. The composer also made good use of the old music from the first Godzilla film.
* The CGI (motion capture) was really good for a $15 million budget. American movie makers could learn from this.
* You get an insight into Japanese politics, how it can be glacial, and how a law is needed to do anything even as everything is falling apart.
* I just liked the fact that they showed street scenes with wires everywhere, because that’s really how it is in Japan.
* You’ll understand better how the trauma of World War II still affects the Japanese government and decisionmaking today.
* You’ll also get a feel for some of the resentment the Japanese have towards the US government (and I can’t even begin to imagine how it is with the short-fingered vulgarian at the top).
What people may not like about the movie:
* All the government bureaucracy scenes. However, I groove on that sort of thing. YMMV.
* It’s a Godzilla movie. Some people are just not into that.
If you’re going to rent or buy this movie, make sure you get the version with English subtitles and not the English dub. You will miss out on SO MUCH if you get the dub. The movie makes a point of telling us where things are happening and the names and titles of the government officials. One guy’s official title gets longer and longer as the movie progresses. The dub doesn’t have ANY of this and you’ll miss out on a lot.
I will say that I was completely glued to this movie for its nearly 2 hour running time. And that’s saying a LOT for me, because I usually get antsy, turn off a movie, go and do something, come back, that sort of thing. Not this movie.

I chuckled this weekend while watching some football. The Fox Sports crew was at West Point and there was a shot where one of the hosts was with a group of cadets and they had to pan out to find a white cadet. My first thought was “I bet that confused a lot of white republicans.”

Another “mystery” defenestration:
“…Mr Le Mesurier, who was believed to be in his 40s at the time of his death and had also worked for the United Nations, was considered a co-founder of the White Helmets.
The organisation, which is also known as the Syria Civil Defence, helps rescue civilians caught up in attacks in areas of Syria controlled by the opposition to President Bashar al-Assad.
In 2016, the organisation received the Right Livelihood Award in recognition for “outstanding bravery, compassion and humanitarian engagement in rescuing civilians”. Later the same year the group was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
But the Syrian government and its allies Russia and Iran have accused the White Helmets of openly aiding terrorist organisations.
The Russian foreign ministry tweeted about Mr Le Mesurier last week, alleging that he was a former agent of the UK’s Secret Intelligence Service, better known as MI6.

This seems like something Putin might do. Or Erdogan. You know. Two of Trump’s besties. Am hoping even Boris’s Brexit-addled UK still cares enough about its own citizens to demand an independent inquiry. But since it’s Turkey, and a Russia-type “accident”, don’t hold your breath https://t.co/mO0AM22p5o

This is what Trump wants his mob to do for him.
and when they do and get caught, the defense will be “What about Vince Foster?”
Nunes. LOL
There are some suspicions that Nunes or someone close to him was running an anonymous Twitter account to defend him that was deleted sometime last night (it’s possible Twitter suspended it, unclear right now) a la Mitt Romney with Pierre Delecto. A thread.

Can you feel safe riding in an Uber when the CEO says that the planned and brutal murder of a man and dismembering of his body was merely a “mistake”?
— Helena Baptiste 🕊️ (@sumbodysbabygrl) November 11, 2019
interesting thing happend to mrs dm on friday
if the uber car you are in dies, you end the trip, get out, and use your app to call another uber to your location and continue on
Mrs dm’s Uber car died on a highway. pulled off safe and called for a tow.
uber wont pick up if you’re stranded on the median of a highway
so she had to wait for the tow, then after the tow driver loaded the car, drove off the highway and dropped her off on the street (with her luggage). called another uber from there.
took way more than an hour of waiting
re: #237 KGxvi
He does, but if he can pull a handful of votes from the crazy caucus that would otherwise go to Trump, it’s fine by me.
I wonder if he’s running so that Republicans disgusted by the corruption in the White House don’t have a principled option for a Conservative Party nominee, but instead another criminal just as despicable as Trump?

re: #236 KGxvi
Peter King is retiring… that makes 20 Republicans in the House not seeking re-election this time. If my math is right, that makes 88 Republicans in the House that have either lost re-election or retired/resigned since Trump’s victory in 2016 (when they won 241 seats in the House).
i believe king makes the 101st:
NBC News: “When Trump arrived in the White House in 2017, there were 241 Republicans at the other end of Pennsylvania Avenue in the House of Representatives. Today, 100 of them have gone or have announced that they are leaving. That’s 41 percent of that original 241 in the 115th House.”

Trump decided to come to NYC again.
And hide behind veterans at our Veterans Day parade.
So New Yorkers showed up to say, “IMPEACH AND REMOVE!”

Fortunately they don’t need a supermajority in the House, just a solid majority like they have now. Its amazing how much politics has changed just since 2008 when the Democrats managed to win 60 seats in the Senate, which is now pretty much unthinkable. 40% of America has gone fascist, which is why the filibuster really needs to be abolished or radically reformed.

Upding for solid black humor.
I never use Uber. I hated their first CEO and this new guy seems like a dick too. I do use Lyft sometimes but if at all possible I try to avoid either service.
