Sondland has gotta be shitting bricks right about now. Wonder what new “recollection” will be coming in the hopes of avoiding a perjury indictment?

Totally. Trump has never actually been interested in cleaning up corruption. He clearly wanted to weaken a likely rival and he was willing to put the sovereignty of an ally in danger to do so. I really hope we find out what the fuck it is with him and Putin. I’ve been reading a Putin biography and the more I read, the more disgusted I get with the Republican Party for completely selling out the few principles they held to stand by Putin over Obama.

Not really surprising: Putin and Russia were disposed to be *friendly*, possibly financially generous, and were conveniently far away. Obama, OTOH, was a clear and present threat to their political sway in this country: given that political power (with money a close second) is all today’s GOP cares about, choosing “sides” was easy.

Totally. This bio was published before Trump was nominated so he doesn’t have a role nor the shenanigans of the 2016 election but Putin is a fucking jerk who is no friend of the US or our interests. W rightfully was mocked for the soul comment but at least he learned. Trump meanwhile would take Putin’s side tomorrow if Russia invaded Ukraine or one of the former SRs.

David Brooks is routinely criticized here and justly so, but his column today in praise of the foreign service career officials shows that he is capable of understanding how the government should work and how these civil servants (demeaned as “unelected bureaucrats” by the GOP base) epitomize the best of our State Department.

Tropical storm Raymond has formed:

star.nesdis.noaa.gov

I noticed there is another circulation just to its southwest. I wonder if that will pull Raymond westward; for now Raymond is expected to head north to Baja. It won’t get here, but will likely bring lots of rain to Texas if the storm survives the next few days.

I’m almost completely ignorant of that area. A few years ago my brother arranged to celebrate my parents’ 60th anniversary by renting a house near Essex, NY (because my sister-in-law had heard of some sustainable farming operations and wanted to volunteer for the week, I think). Anyway, the farthest north I got was Plattsburgh. Lots of Canadian cars in the parking lots, though.

The area is interesting. Like has no identity to a point. No sports team of their own. Sport that is played is hockey lacrosse and football. The akwasasne mohawk reservation have helped to elevate lacrosse to a new level. The area was shipping and factories. It is now orisons and law enforcement, with border patrol and cops everywhere. Most of the people gobble up Trump’s shit with Glee. there are four colleges in my area, two state universities via suny and two private. My friends and I are liberals. Catching up.

That’s a twist on a cold-war era joke: In a play of one-upsmanship a Soviet GUM store placed an order with an American company for 100 gross of 15-inch condoms. The marketing chief of the latex plant asked the old manager what to do with the order. He said: “Run ‘em, box ‘em, and label them ‘Small’.”

Are you from the area? Thatthe lady running from my area against stefanik (r-dumbass) and is from Canton ny, the county seat for my area. She is smart and does well. The problem is this area is very much trump country because they feel forgotten on a federal level. It is also due to he fact that Democrat for local elections really means moderate conservative, and act like typical conservatives and give Democrats a really bad name.local democratic council basically made the local hospital choose to merge with one certain hospital in the area or close. No other choices. Alot of back dealing.

May I ask if you are from the area

That area has been hurting for a while. I went to high school in Massena and was last in the area about five years ago. A lot of the local businesses were shuttered and the last recession pretty much killed a lot of small businesses in that entire region and it looks like it never recovered. Plus a lot of the heavier industry is gone, though I think Alcoa is still running some operations there.

Pre-pardoning future crimes.

The President’s pardon power is absolute for federal crimes. He is undermining our rule of law, with the acquiescence of the entire GOP. Now, if the Democrats win in 2020 — and regain the Presidency and both Houses, it is possible that recovery from this aberration may be faster than we expect. It may not take years to restore sanity— but it does require the election of Democrats.

A good joke (especially for a woman to tell) is to says that EU regulations require that all condoms carry instructions for use printed in all the languages of the EU.

Ask a fellow if he has seen that, when he replies in the negative, then ask “You mean you’ve never had to unroll one all the way?”

I had a girlfriend from Northern NJ who once got an obscene phone call: “I wanna give you all my ten inches!”
To which she relied “You can get it up three times?”

Sadly, it’s most likely because many/most of said supporters are just fine with despotism: as long as the despot is “their guy”, and perceived as wielding power against their “enemies”, foreign or domestic. With special emphasis on the “domestic”….

Time for a new Coates and Baldwin, could probably get two more and lose a week in them.

I’m still pretty confident Putin nor Trump expected to win, but once they did, they cannot go back. Russia plays a long game and Trump getting elected may have sped things up too fast for them to keep up. Now it’s just a free for all and harder to control.

It’s not hyperbole to consider we’re not going back to where we were and there are only two outcomes: Trump wins and further consolidates power into some Idiocracy fascist state, or he loses and we being a long arduous reconciliation with the 30% of our population in the cult.

I don’t think Russia was playing any long game. It’s easier to think of the Russian government as a crime family: there’s The Boss, who gets pitched new rackets by his captains, and a bunch of soldiers and sometimes-allies that execute. Putin has been letting the security services and their associated oligarchs do whatever they want for years. Clinton really pissed Putin off by calling him out as Secretary of State, and he lashed out and let his minions interfere in the election to hurt her. He didn’t think any further than that. It’s been a free for all there for years.

I agree that it is now ride or die for the Republicans. Using the engineering term, there is no graceful failure mode here. They (re)institute minority white Christian rule, or all the criminal activity gets out to those people they have relentlessly abused.

For Russia, it’s hard to say what will happen. For all the trolling and the victorious sneering, Trump hasn’t gotten them much. The one real goal they had for a Trump administration is the removal of sanctions on the oligarchs and their company, and they have mostly not gotten it. Other foreign goals, such as weakening NATO and the EU, haven’t really been achieved: there has been trouble and a bunch of yelling, and they’ve stopped some forward progress, but they are holding together. Ukraine still exists. They have gotten a free hand in Syria, but really don’t know what to do with it besides sell some more weapons and loot the place some more.

Russia’s problem, as usual, is Russia. All the foreign adventurism is getting wearying for the population, who haven’t benefited from it whatsoever. The Russian population is mostly pissed off at the raising of the retirement age, a big trash and pollution problem, high prices, and ongoing corruption. I can’t see a popular uprising against Putin, but a lack of popular support makes a palace coup more likely. If we see a new, Democratic, pissed off US President in 2021, there are going to be pointed questions in the Kremlin about what this insanely risky interference really accomplished.

Russia gets a free hand to do pretty much whatever it wants in Ukraine and the Middle East. I don’t know where Trump gets this image of being a tough guy who is not to be messed with, he is totally outclassed by the likes of Kim, Erdogan, Xi or Putin.

Ukraine still exists, and a mostly Russian-hostile government runs it. Russia runs the Donbass, and gets to piss away billions of dollars worth of hardware there in an ongoing stalemate. The assumption in 2014 was that the “uprising” in the Donbass and the coup in Crimea would collapse the Ukrainian government and state, and Russia would take most of it. (A few years ago, the Polish government got a letter from the Russians, asking for their historical claims on any land currently under Ukrainian jurisdiction. The Poles thought this was some sort of trick and tossed it.) Putin’s legacy will be as the Russian leader who lost Ukraine.

Russia is certainly trying to be a player in the Middle East. They do free dirty work for Syria, and sometimes for Turkey and Iran. They hold a bunch of diplomatic talks to try to press their will onto the local governments, which go nowhere. They have some new bases in Syria, which allows them to do more free dirty work for Syria and sometimes Turkey and Iran. Then they declare success. The Russian oligarchs do get something out of it personally though, since Syria is a completely corrupt place where the powerful can line their own pockets. This doesn’t help Russia as a whole very much.

Good analysis, eb: I’d take issue with just one point:

I don’t think Russia was playing any long game

Like in the old joke about the hunters and the bear, they don’t have to play a “long game”: they just have to play a longer game than us.

And even leaving Trump’s incompetence and imbecility aside, the US (IMO) has not been doing long-term thinking in its foreign-policy for years. And when “we’ve” tried, as in the Iraq War, it’s usually worked out badly.

BTW, the masters at the long game are the Chinese: a bunch of analysis pieces I’ve read in the last few years have noted that the Chinese government has been slowly-but-surely building up a global presence: mainly through infrastructure development in places the US and other “First World” countries don’t think profitable enough to bother with. Which of course, is most of the “ROW”…

Serious question.

A couple of questions…

Is it a Les Paul type or a Fender (Strat or Tele) type? This matters, because unless you’re playing the guitar left handed while strung for a righty (it’s been done), you’ll need to reverse both the bridge and the nut (which the strings pass through to get to the tuning keys).

A LP-type bridge (tune-o-matic) would be easier to reverse, since you’d just take it off, turn it backwards and put it back on. On a Strat or Tele type guitar, you’ll need to remove each string saddle and move them to their opposite spot. Gotta do this so the string slots are still the right fit for the strings.

You’ll also need to pull the nut and replace it with one that’s been filed for lefty playing. You can get them for not too much money at places like Stewart McDonald.

It’s not an insignificant amount of work, but not crazy difficult, either.

Question for the guitar buffs.

How hard is it to convert a RH electric guitar to LH?

I can afford to buy a used RH guitar, but I’ll need to convert it to LH. I can’t afford to buy a LH guitar new (I can afford $75 for a guitar).

Serious question.

I have not tried it but looking at Jimi Hendrix, I think all you have to do is swap the strings and then hold it with the other side up. Try this:

re: #259 Belafon

Serious question, then: How do you make chords on the neck with your right hand?

Oops. That’s a typo. I meant the fingers on my left hand are messed up.

I guess I could try two finger guitar playing, like Tommy Iommi of Black Sabbath. He’s a southpaw player and that works. The ring finger and pinky finger on my lefthand are basically useless but the thumb, index and middle fingers are all OK.

I am digging the heck out of series 4 of The Man in the High Castle

They have really taken the story to places that Phillip K Dick would only have approved of.

Especially how, in the 1960’s, the Greater German Reich in America is experiencing somewhat of a “Cultural Revolution” with zealous, idealistic students turning on their teachers & parents…

(not really a spoiler as it was already hinted at at the end of series 3)

fucking awesome

Power chords are your friend, especially using your thumb further round to hold the low E string.

But yeah, I can see a left handed guitar working better in your case and using a pick in your left hand instead.

re: #242 BigPapa

I’ve been studying up the Biden/Burisma receipts. There is nothing there I’ve seen. The more one looks, there isn’t even the appearance of impropriety. The canard that is ‘HB gets paid $50k a month and he knows nothing about gas’ is utter BS: he wasn’t hired because he knew anything about gas at all, he was hired because Burisma was trying to get right with the newer govt.

Hunter and Joe were helping to drain the Ukraine swamp. Trump want’s it to come back to being a deeper swamp.

What utterly contemptuous and loathsome people.

Quite true (especially your summation), but IMO, there never was “anything there”; but that there being “anything there” was (and always has been) irrelevant to the fake “scandal” Trump, the WH, the Admin and the GOP have been trying to gin up. What Hunter Biden did or didn’t do is fundamentally meaningless: the main goal was for the aforesaid loathsomes to start - and get their RW media enablers to start - bleating BIDEN!! UKRAINE!! CORRUPTION!! as loudly and as often as possible. And rely on the chump “MSM” to pick up on it - regardless of its veracity - and repeat the bleat, assuming (unfortunately, probably correctly) that BIDEN!! UKRAINE!! CORRUPTION!! was all anyone was likely to remember. Even after any allegations or accusations had been long debunked.

Recall that Trump’s Ukraine “team” - Giuliani, et. al. - were going to be satisfied with President Zelenskiy merely “announcing” an “investigation” into Burisma: actually investigating (or what they might find) was way secondary: it was the announcement that meant to provide backup for the BIDEN!! UKRAINE!! CORRUPTION!! chorus they were hoping would distract/derail Joe’s campaign.

Yep: “contemptuous and loathsome”: got it in one….

Conspiracy Theory: the AM radio economy isn’t profitable and is propped up as a propaganda pipeline. Rush Limabaugh famously signed a ginormous $400m deal for years several years ago, and I don’t know how much others get paid. But I wonder if all the products they hawk and subsidiary fees, they are actually making $.

I have no proof of this and it will take some work to run through and see.

I worked in AM radio and I have suspected the same thing. Can’t prove it but it may be something that needs investigating when loyal Americans regain control of the Executive branch.

Yeah, could be a long term project for me. Brings into question FEC and campaign finance as it’s essentially political advertising. I suspect it’s a money losing business with dark money coming in to put it in the black. Sorta like Tony Soprano have a legitimate cash heavy business like a strip club help wash his money. I’m also beginning to think the Fairness Doctrine being trashed may have been more of an impact than Citizen’s United. But that’s going to take some work to flesh out.

I saw an absolutely beat-to-shit Chinese Stratocaster knockoff at a pawn shop a couple weeks ago.

They wanted the equivalent of $235 for it. Now, if it had been played by David Gilmour or something, I could see that price.

Shit, all the strings but one were missing and it was missing a pickup too.

Sadly, stuff like that sells for a king’s ransom here. Czechs seem to have no sense of how much things are worth….or not worth in this case.

Probably not just a CT: I’ve been hearing for years that Limbaugh took whatever corporate entity he signed with to the cleaners for way more than his gastfests could ever hope to generate in revenue, but that it was an ironclad contract that would have been more expensive to get out of than just keeping Rush on the air. Also, supposedly the radio business is even more opaque than usual for Corporate America: partly because it’s considered something of an anachronism.

That’s what gets me so up in my grumbles. The mere fumes of possible fact is enough to build a campaign that the right wing media ecosystem will run with and by default the mainstream media will have to acknowledge to appear ‘fair and balanced.’

And for it, the RW media still trashes the rest of the media.

It started with Richard Mellon Scaife and the Hunt Brothers putting up the seed money to start up the Religious Right. They got the Eagle Forum going with their stooge Phyllis Schlafly to oppose the ERA, next came drug addicted and alcoholic Anita Bryant as their gay hating spokesperson then they pumped up the case for Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson and the Pulpit Pimps to fuse Xtianity into the Republican Party.

Oh I can remember as a kid in my hometown when churches proclaimed “Jesus Loves You”. Of course there was the single Birch Church with the right wing nuts that people goofed on. But after Roe all of a sudden the Catholic Church started passing out the red roses and telling their marks to vote Republican. Then the infection of the Religious Right spread to Protestant churches and their message was now “Jesus Hates Gays and Abortion”. And all of a sudden churches were fissioning like radioactive atoms and the right wingers split off and took most of the mainline members with them into right wing churches reciting Republican propaganda.

I got to congratulate the Religious Right because they are gladly driving people out of churches. And that is a good thing!

What the religious right will never acknowledge is that this is their own doing. They proclaimed a hateful inversion of faith as the only real Christianity, and millions of us responded by abandoning Christianity.

My Catholic upbringing contributed to my disdain for Christianity, but what really out me off was the 70/80’s Campus Crusade for Christ and the Anti-Abortion movement.

Later in life I did meet some people I really considered Christians, who quietly lived and practiced their faith. Not enough me to bring me over but enough to make me recognize it was not necessarily all pious pomp and hypocrisy.

The bunker-Hunts (the bastards who tried to corner the silver market back in the late 70’s) were heavily bankrolling them.

I also remember back when I was hitchhiking and got picked up by some piggy-eyed white trash fellow who told me within minutes of getting in that he was a “born-again Christian”. I just though “god bless you for giving me a lift”, and then with minutes, he was telling me how he had picked up a woman at a CCC meeting and then got her drunk and fucked her.

That seemed to be his standard MO.

And I recall my wife bring home a Toby Kieth Album (entitled “White Trash With Money), which was “dedicated to my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ” and contained a song, “Running Block, about picking up drunk women and fucking them in motel rooms.

Really told me a lot about modern American Christianity.

re: #250 BigPapa

You are right about AM Radio. The lucrative side of the radio music went to FM with its better range and sound quality back in the early 80’s. AM radio, more local and limited floundered around for more than a decade looking for a format to replace the music. It settled on talk radio. Talk radio had advantages for a struggling radio station, low cost, no need for a lot of promotions.

Talk radio hired all of the rendundant DJ’s who no longer could fit because of age or whatever on the FM music side of the dial and is now making them into politicians, which is one of the reasons for some of the stunts you saw on Wednesday and Friday. These are stunts redolent of the 1980’s shock jock era-the belief that disruption is good in and of itself.

It’s no accident that the Republicans now have a lot of people coming out of talk radio-its a way to get known on a daily basis for a potential candidate.

As the old jocks who remember music radio retire, more and more slots are being filled by true believers who can use their shows as a bit of wingnut welfare. So the antics will grow worse and worse because the need is to keep whatever listeners are still there. At least 2 generations have moved to FM, even younger ones go to podcast and satellite, so the group of listeners have shrunk-but that’s the listenership that consistently votes, so there.

Profitwise, even with the rise of Rush Limbaugh, it worked until podcasting and internet radio. Now a lot of them are any of the following-ethnic radio, religious radio, and right wing talk.

There are a few liberal radio stations-WCPT from Chicago, a few out west on the coast, but mostly it’s right wing radio out there. So I wouldn’t be surprised at even the terms regarding Rush Limbaugh. He’s the 900 lb element of AM radio, which would struggle now for even a local audience without one syndicated something. And for the rest of the right-wingers, subsidizing a radio show is one of the cheapest thing you can do for wingnut welfare anyway. Keep them in the mix when tv shuts them out.
