MP4 Video

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is refusing to commit to send the articles of impeachment to the Senate, until Mitch McConnell backs down from his pledge to kill the trial and agrees to bring in first-hand witnesses. And this clip succinctly explains why.

“Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (Hawaii), a 2020 Democratic presidential candidate, criticized Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) after she said that she would delay delivering House-passed impeachment articles against President Trump in an effort to ensure a fair trial in the Senate.”

She is nothing but a little grub worm on the face of the Democratic presidential primary race… She is obviously a Republican waiting for her chance to change parties.

And people wanted to get rid of her. When Nancy steps down from the Speakership, the man or woman who replaces her will have big shoes to fill. Nancy is one of the most effective Speakers in history. She got ACA passed, got impeachment, and when she was a party leader in the House in 2003 she got most of the Dems to vote against the mistake that was the Iraq War Resolution. It really disappoints me that many of the left wingers of my generation do not appreciate how savvy a politician this woman really is because she doesn’t promise them the world.

The Fenians’ 1866 marching song, cited in a recent Canadian history:

We are the Fenian Brotherhood, skilled in the art of war.
And we’re going to fight for Ireland, the land that we adore.
Many battles we have won, along with the boys in blue.
And we’ll go and capture Canada, for we’ve nothing else to do.

Pretty much describes the motivation and outcome of the enterprise.

POTUS lawyers are looking at various options for proceeding if House doesn’t send articles of impeachment to the Senate. POTUS doesn’t want it to be left hanging that he was impeached and nothing was done by Republicans to defend him in the Senate

They know that any witnesses they call will inevitably wind up contradicting either themselves or other sworn testimony, opening up a king-size can of worms…

Trump’s the one blocking witnesses who supposedly exonerate Trump.

Why?

Because none of them exonerate Trump but implicate him and them in crimes. Everyone there knows it. But they perpetuate the lie because Trump demands it and the base buys his baffling bulkshit word for word.

I just listened to the first few minutes of Preet’s podcast. He makes the point that holding the articles from the senate plays into Trump’s and McConnell’s hands because they’d rather not have a trial at all. I somewhat disagree. If the Dems keep aggressively pursing investigations—like Trump’s attempt to have McGahn cover up for him—then they can add (I think) more articles and shift public perceptions.

The Dems need to make it clear to the public that McConnell in his own words wasn’t prepared to play fair. I’d also really consider making Amash an impeachment manager. I don’t like the guy. His brand of libertarianism is the ultimate fuck you, I got mine mentality but he’s able to articulate quite well why Trump needs to go and it would show the public that this isn’t a partisan hit job no matter how much Trump and his cult want it to be.

The Trumpian style has really infected the GOP rather quickly. If Moscow Mitch would have just shut the fuck up about the impeachment trial, they could have quickly acquitted the orange baby-man. But no, Trump needs to be publicly fellated on a daily basis leaving the GOP little choice but to broadcast their intentions. It almost like Trump is not an outlier in GOPland.

re: #354 Decatur Deb

In the 1860 census, there were only a few hundred people with our family name in the US. One became a Union general. (He later invaded Canada in a Fenian incursion.) Another, a sergeant, is listed on a North Side Pittsburgh monument as KIA in a light artillery battery.

I suspect that you’re referencing Battery “F”, Hampton’s Battery, Pennsylvania Independent Light Artillery, they certainly were in the thick of things in the Eastern Theater for most of the Civil War. I think that there is a monument to them in West Park on the North Side.

There was also a Battery “B”, Muehler’s Battery, Pennsylvania Independent Light Artillery. It served in the thick of things of the Western Theater of the Civil War.

Apparently, Pittsburgh boys relished a good fight.

My family was originally from the Kansas-Missouri border. One relative who was around at the time served in the 10th Kansas Cavalry.

But man, for a moment I wasn’t even shocked to think that comic book dialog made it into presidential correspondence.

The Trump asskissers just can’t face the facts that Trump made his name known in presidential politics by declaring Mexican immigrants to be rapists and murderers, mocked POWs for being captured while he himself and no one in his family has ever worn a military uniform, and mocked a disabled reporter. Yeah I have negative opinions of Donald Trump. My question for them is simple, why the hell should I have any positive opinions of this guy? Everyone knows that he’s a scumbag. Republicans knew it and were scared to death of him getting their nomination to the point that their leaders were ready to settle on Ted Cruz who is about as likable as a glass of beer left out in the August sun all day.

The question Republicans and the administration have never answered is this: why was the president’s personal attorney making policy in Ukraine over the Ambassador and furthermore why did the the President’s attorney engage in a smear campaign of said ambassador? Rudy is Trump’s attorney not a government appointee. I don’t think even Nixon involved his personal attorney in the Watergate cover up.

So what’s the analysis here? That markets are pleased because of the prospect of Trump getting the boot? Or that they know he’s going to skate in the Senate, so keep on buying?

Or, on the third hand, that stock markets may or not react to each day’s news instantly? Or as facile “news” analysis might lead the (unfamiliar) public to think?

Trump’s made it clear. He views Hispanics as criminals. He thinks they have no right to search for a better life here like two of his wives did and his mother. Maybe it would have been better if Mother Trump stayed in Scotland and married a decent Scottish guy instead of Fred. We at least wouldn’t have to know the pig that is their son.

I think there’s something that we don’t really know that Pelosi and McConnell do, and that’s why Pelosi is delaying and McConnell is getting this pissed off at what will probably be a few weeks’ delay. Either Trump is about to blow up (worse) if he doesn’t get some sort of acquittal RIGHT NOW, or there are at least four wobbly gooper Senators that want some sort of real trial. I’m guessing the latter, because if there’s one thing that Pelosi is real good at it’s counting noses.

Sorry, the formatting got lost there, but this is what Republicans are fighting, and know is coming: Democrats literally controlled the House of Representatives for two generations. And they’ll eventually control the Senate as well. Once that happens, the Republican party is dead.

The Senate is always a bit tricky to tell but Republicans are definitely losing the demographic battle. And the more honest ones admit that’s why they’re dicks to minorities. The truth is it didn’t have to be that way. W Bush had a lot of faults but his perception of communities of color isn’t one of them.

“We’ve turned the Republican party into a working-class party,” said Bannon, relaxing at a table with an autographed photo of Trump behind him. “Now, interestingly, we don’t have any elected representatives who believe that, but that’s a legacy issue. We’ll get over that. We’ve got to find our AOCs.”

The Democrats and their supporters have “better casting”, Bannon admitted. “They did an amazing job in 18. I keep saying I admire AOC. I think her ideology’s all fucked up, but I want her. I want to recruit bartenders. I don’t want to recruit any more lawyers. I want bartenders.”

Congressional Republicans are dominated by ageing white men from comfortable backgrounds. Among Democrats, Bannon also pointed to military veterans … “That’s perfect casting. That’s why we got smoked.”

Bannon just doesn’t get that Democrats serve their country too. I’m named after my maternal grandfather, a Korean War vet who hated the Republican Party. Republicans like to talk about how they respect veterans but veterans have always been props to Steve’s party, a way to attack Democrats and liberals for not being “real Americans” Bannon isn’t stupid but he sure as hell is deluded about what he’s up against. He’s up against a coalition that resembles America rather than his sorry ass who have no original thoughts to offer.

Hard to know what will happen — a lot depends on voter suppression, gerrymandering, and voter disenfranchisement. But in the past 12 House elections, Democrats won only 4 of them. Losing the demographic battle doesn’t mean losing control, especially when you have the financial resources to control the media.

I really am trying to stay as glass half full as possible. Given what I’m going through on a personal level, I really don’t want to think about the Republicans money. They’re not dead no but the changing demographics are catching up to them. A lot of attention rightfully was given to how we flipped the legislature here in Va but we also elected a lot of other Democrats to state wide positions too.

As far as the GOP is concerned, you’re right…..it didn’t need to be that way. But they chose a different path.

One road says “America is for white, Christian people”.

The other road says “America is for people, regardless of the color of your skin, or your ancestry, or your faith - or lack of faith, for that matter. What unites us is the idea of government for the people, by the people, and of the people and that all of us are created equal, endowed with certain inalienable rights, chief among these rights being life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness…..no matter who you are, or where you’re from, or whom you love.”

It’s the old argument of a hierarchical society vs. an egalitarian society…..and for conservatives, an egalitarian society is nothing less than a nightmare.

Bannon is a fake, phony fraud “underdog champion” as his primary concern is with forming nationalist movements within white-dominant countries. This is not a true hero of underdogs.

His movements inspire those with a built-in sense of Entitlement based on their light skin color. White Supremacism is not championing the “underdog”. It is reinforcing grievances and promoting divisions in order for demagogues and authoritarians to obtain power. Bannon’s movement hates democracy and but eager to use it strategically to weaken it long term.

A quick check of Wikipedia (which actually has a page dedicated to her political views, quelle surprise) shows that apparently this has been an on-going thing with her. She’s liked anti-trans tweets in the past, then tried to BS her way out of the controversy by playing the “tech-dumb Boomer” card. But before this tweet, the most she’d done was start following a few anti-trans accounts, which her spokespeople excused as her just following numerous people because she found their tweets “thought-provoking.”

Heh.
Reminds me of the old story: I read it in a book by Luigi Barzini, and it was said to be a quote from King Victor Emmanuel III, though I think its origin is elsewhere/older.

The King had just finished making a speech from his balcony to the assembled masses, and an aide congratulated him:
“Excellent speech, Your Majesty! Just listen to that crowd!”

The King’s response:
“Bah! Just as many people would turn out to see me executed. And they’d all cheer just as loudly.”

Van Drew is at the WH to switch parties to the GOP.

But before he switches, does the GOP realize that they’ve made all the House bills passed with his approval bipartisan?

[Embedded content]

Van Drew is still going to be an asterisk in the whole impeachment saga, because he’s going to be a one-term wonder because he was going to be primaried by the Democrats - that’s why he switched.

The “bipartisan” impeachment of Bill Clinton included five Dem votes in favor of the AoIs. 3 of those Dems ultimately changed their party affiliations to Republican. All ended up driven out of Congress, with two of those who changed parties getting defeated by Teapublicans. Van Drew’s future is to be a punchline at parties and an obscure answer to political junkie trivia.

The thing about Tulsi is she acts like she’s this person of principle but she really proved she wasn’t yesterday. This is definitely an issue that people are going to want a definitive stance on. There are definitely issues that don’t have a simple yes or no answer when it comes to a vote. This wasn’t one of them. And voters aren’t going to respond to her attempt to act like it wasn’t a binary choice. This along with HRC calling her out is probably going to hurt her ability to try to play spoiler if that’s part of her end game plus how much negative attention back home she’s gotten for being an obvious grandstander.

I hope I’m not off here but I really see this whole thing as an extension of the original Russian interference-collusion. Obviously, they went after this since its entirety has been under his presidency along with the testimony by people like Colonel Vindman, Secretary Kent, Ambassadors Taylor/Yovanovitch, and his and Mulvaney’s own public behavior about it. This whole thing reeks of Trump again undermining our policies and credibility for the benefit of Putin’s agenda. Putin definitely wants unrest in Ukraine so Russia can try to sweep in and act like democracy had failed there and they needed like Crimea to be brought under Russian rule. I really think that’s the end game here by the Kremlin.

He’s pretty easy to read. I forget who said it but when he doesn’t have the narrative, he’s inflicted the most self damage. He’s been impeached. That’s something he can’t spin. He can complain about it all he wants but it’s there. And I think this is why Pelosi was smart too be cautious on impeaching Bush too. I definitely agree with what KG said the other day about more presidents who should have been impeached but unfortunately the modern media circus doesn’t explain the civic importance of why we have these procedures. This provision exists for a reason. Our founders were people who weren’t too far removed from the English Civil War and a King who thought he could tell Parliament off and that experience definitely influenced the writers they read along with the Frenchmen that had experienced Louis and his sun monarchy. The age of absolutism wasn’t that far from our Founders minds. We have to remember that.

He knew he had a serious job as our President but he wasn’t afraid to let loose and laugh at himself. Making a cameo on Key and Peele’s Luther the Anger Translator really showed that he has a good sense of humor. Doesn’t surprise me of course knowing that the man when he honored Mel Brooks brought up sneaking into Blazing Saddles as a teenager. That’s why it amuses me that people associate Obama with this idea that the left went uptight PC. Obama has a great sense of humor. It’s just that the right’s sense of humor sucks.

That’s why I see it as highly important that the GOP is dealt a crushing defeat next year. That will A): serve to dispirit Trump voters and B): if it’s a big enough fiasco for the Republican Party, it’ll deter their leadership from even considering anyone with the last name of “Trump” from appearing on the ballot as one of their candidates until the heat death of the universe.

And frankly, even though Lenin was a brutal and horrific autocrat, what the Bolsheviks did was appallingly disrespectful. Lenin explicitly stated he wished to be buried with his family. Stable genius:

“…Privately, officials tried in vain to convince the president that CrowdStrike was not a Ukrainian company and that it would be impossible for the server to be located there, a former administration official said.

One of the officials who Hill said tried to convince Trump, former homeland security adviser Thomas P. Bossert, publicly pleaded with the White House in September to drop the Ukraine theory, which he called “completely debunked.”

“The DNC server and that conspiracy theory has got to go,” he told ABC News’s “This Week.” “If he continues to focus on that white whale, it’s going to bring him down.”

Bossert pointed to Giuliani, Trump’s personal lawyer, as a persistent source of the server claim. “I am deeply frustrated with what [Giuliani] and the legal team is doing in repeating that debunked theory to the president. It sticks in his mind when he hears it over and over again.”

My thought exactly and he also saw the importance of the space race. Sputnik, Laika, & Yuri Gagarin were when he was in charge. Dubcek fascinates me because he was actually conceived in Chicago and spent time in the USSR as a young man. It’s interesting but although I believe the Velvet Divorce was a good thing for both countries, Dubcek and Havel who I both admire were opposed to that.

Definitely. And too many Trump supporters would be absolutely delighted to vote for his son. Think about the Bush precedent — Bush elected in 1988 and then his son in 2000 — and his other son tried for 2016. This possibility is chilling. Don Jr has no qualifications for the office — but then his father doesn’t either and the EC granted him a victory. But again, Trump received 63 million votes and many(most? almost all?) of these will transfer their loyalty to his son.

True, but at least both Bush sons actually had political experience: they had run for, been elected, and served in statewide office. And made sure they had a good network of connections in the national Party. What does Idiot Junior bring to a campaign? A bunch of halfwitted nasty tweets?

Not there isn’t some number of morons out there that wouldn’t vote for Don The Lesser just on the strength of his name: this is America, after all…

Consider what an unbelieving world will say if you continue to brush off Mr. Trump’s immoral words and behavior in the cause of political expediency. If we don’t reverse course now, will anyone take anything we say about justice and righteousness with any seriousness for decades to come? Can we say with a straight face that abortion is a great evil that cannot be tolerated and, with the same straight face, say that the bent and broken character of our nation’s leader doesn’t really matter in the end?

re: #277 Dr Lizardo

So, about nine months between impeachment and trial; following that model, that’d put us in September 2020 for a Senate trial of Trump.

Perfect timing.

And with that, goodnight.

We’ve seen both short and long delays between impeachment and trial:

Samuel Kent was impeached on June 19, 2009 and his trial started June 24. He resigned on the 30th, but the trial continued into July (not sure why).

Clinton was impeached December 19, 1998 and the trial started on January 7.

Walter Nixon impeached May 10, 1989; trial was November 1-3, and he was convicted and removed from office.

Alcee Hastings was impeached in August 1988, trial wasn’t until mid October and he was convicted as well.

Interestingly, Frank Sensenbrenner has been a House manager in the last four impeachment trials. Looks like that streak is about to be broken.

In an earlier comment, I had made an allusion to Bridgegate, suggesting that the Republican attraction to abuse of power it revealed made it appropriate that Van Drew would want to join them. I did that thinking that Bridgegate was a situation everyone would agree was abuse of power. It turns out I was wrong. Last July, the Bridgegate defendants Bridget Anne Kelly and Bill Baroni were actually arguing that their actions were actually ok.

Baroni’s attorneys in their briefs called Bridgegate “a case of bare-knuckle New Jersey politics, not graft.” They said if the government could convict a public official of fraudulently depriving a public agency of money or property simply for employing his agency’s resources “with a concealed political motive,” then the federal government will have free rein to charge and convict officials for all manner of political deals, favors, and rebukes, unless those officials are brutally candid about their true political motivations.

Apparently, there are at least 4 SCOTUS justices who think it’s a plausible claim. The Court has agreed to hear the case. It’s scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 14 at 10 a.m.

I think the parallels with the current GOP excuses the Ukraine scheme are pretty obvious. And it may be of some moment that the case will be heard around the time that the Senate will be looking at impeachment. It should be possible to link these two similar cases of GOP abuse of power.

You’ve seen the new Star Wars film? Which a reviewer compared to the disastrous last season of GOT? And you disagree with that evaluation?

Saw an advanced screening a few hours ago.
As someone who liked The Last Jedi more than than The Force Awakens, I came in with next to zero expectations and came out surprisingly pleased.

Didn’t see the review you’re referencing, but I don’t find the comparison appropriate.
For one thing, in what should have been an advantage to GOT, the showrunners, directors and writers for the last season were essentially the same ones for the previous season, and were involved in the show from day one. Wasn’t the case with the Sequel trilogy. I sure didn’t leave the theater feeling the same disappointment I felt when the GOT finale concluded.

Is it predictable at times? Sure.
Is it fun? Yes.
Is it a good conclusion to the trilogy? I wanna say yes, but this jury is still out.
Is it on the same level as any of the Original movies? I’d say no.
Is it on the same level as any of the Prequel movies? Meesa gonna say HELL no.
Is it a good Star Wars movie at the end of the day? Yes, yes it is.
