Letra de «Mi Religión»

Desde que vi tus ojos me enamoré
Me enamoré
Me enamoré

Desde que oí tu canto sabía que
No había manera
De abandonarte, mi amor

Porque toda la luz y colores
De un cielo azul haces brillar
Eres tú mi religión

A veces me pregunto por qué me alejo
De tu alegría, misterios e inspiración
Siento un dolor, un amargo arrepentimiento

Tú eres mi hogar
La religión en mi existir
Eres tú

Música, tú
Mi religión
Una vida no basta
Para entregarte mi amor

Música, tú
Mi perdición
Una vida no basta
Para entregarte mi amor

Desde que vi tus ojos me enamoré
Me enamoré
Me enamoré

En tu primer abrazo recuerdo que
Mi cuerpo vivo
Y temblorosa mi voz
Porque todo en este universo
Cobró razón

En mi existir
Eres tú mi religión

A veces me pregunto por qué me alejo
De tu alegría, misterios e inspiración
Siento un dolor, un amargo arrepentimiento

Tú eres mi hogar
La religión en mi existir
Eres tú

Música, tú
Mi religión
Una vida no basta
Para entregarte mi amor

Música, tú
Mi perdición
Una vida no basta
Para entregarte mi amor

Música, tú
Mi religión
Una vida no basta
Para entregarte mi amor

Música, tú
Mi perdición
Una vida no basta
Para entregarte mi amor

Ay, me enamoré
Ay, me enamoré
Una vida no basta, lo sé
Para darte todito mi amor

Ay, me enamoré
Una vida no basta, lo sé
Para darte todito mi amor

Our job, no matter what happens, is to lay all of this at Trump’s feet. He has encouraged the actions that led to recent events.

Especially considering that the governor, the attorney general, and the mayors of both the impacted cities ANNOUNCED IN A DAMN PRESS CONFERENCE that it was white supremacists. You just don’t do that unless you have some serious facts on your side.

Some of the local police departments have had bad reputations in the past, but some of that was long ago. I’ve not kept up on local police trends. I’ve sort of assumed that the departments have over the years slowly changed.

The video I linked previously is pretty typical, though, of the heavy hand of police officers. It is a tough job, but I believe part of the “tough” element is knowing when to not do something one as a person might be tempted to do.

Garcetti has just announced a curfew in Los Angeles.

39
stpaulbear  May 30, 2020 • 3:53:19pm

Well I made my grocery run and took a tour of the main drag in my neighborhood. About half of the businesses are closed and boarded up and I am worried for the ones that aren’t boarded. First time I drove past the grocery store it looked like shit was going on near the front door. I needed to go get some money anyway. I checked out another grocery store across the river from downtown but they were boarded up and closed. The local store looked safe when I got back but there were a lot of shoppers. 90 percent were wearing masks and everyone was making an effort to maintain distances. I asked the carry out guy how crazy it’s been. A couple of people had tried to make a scene in the store but he was taking it much more in stride than I would have. I saw that a Chinese place I like was open so I ordered take out from the car, brought the groceries home, and then picked up. They were closing at 7:00 to get out of there before the 8:00 curfew. They hadn’t boarded up and I thought the cashier was being way too nonchalant about the danger. THEY ARE A CHINESE RESTAURANT in a red area for a RACIST INVASION.

I hope I don’t hear a bunch of mayhem tonight. I’m two blocks from the main drag.

I’ve not heard any gunshot reports or fire reports. So yes, probably peaceful.

La Mesa is a strange place - blue (Democratic) and middle class ( some poor, a few rich, mostly in-between), but also sort of traditional. A mixture of progressive politics and sort of milquetoast society.

A security expert says intelligence reports indicate most of the hard-core protesters in Minneapolis are far-left or anarchists, and that far-right groups have not yet made a significant appearance.

I can say that while I was driving to the bank and the post office (not in my neighborhood) that I only saw one out-of-state plate. I did see a few aggressive pickup truck cowboys on the highway, and one old Jeep Cherokee with gun culture stickers all over and a rack on the roof.

One thing Alabama does right is prohibiting guns at a demonstration.

Not sure how many of you follow Linda Tirado, but she was in the heart of one of these protests, and had her eye shot out by a cop.

That’s right - she was hit with a rubber bullet, and she’s lost her eye. She’s a photographer, and said that this isn’t her dominant eye, so there’s that. She’s one tough gal, and she’s still tweeting up a storm.

She’s back at work!

No one else in the crowd had rubber bullets - cops did, and they were firing on crowds where she was.

This is unacceptable, and shows how lawless cops can be - and prosecutors and politicians are fine with it because cops make for good backdrops and everyone professes to be for law and order, when there’s an undercurrent of racism and institutionalized violence that can be unleashed to maintain the status quo.

71
Eclectic Cyborg  May 30, 2020 • 5:06:01pm

WHEN THE NIGHT COMES

It always grows foreboding,
When the sun dips below the clouds.
You can hear the fury of the people
You can feel it in the crowds.

You’d like to think it will be okay,
But you know deep down inside.
That beneath the cloak of darkness
Is where the monsters always hide.

The streets are full of trouble,
In a nation gripped by fear.
A match is lit, a bomb goes off
The riot squad is here.

In a chaotic sea of tear gas,
And Molotov soaked rags.
The crackdown, fast and vicious.
And dissenters? Bound and gagged.

You can quote the Constitution,
You can be an expert on the law,
But it doesn’t matter in the war zone,
When a nation is torn raw.

It doesn’t matter where you come from,
Could be both sides of the tracks.
But you may not live to see tomorrow
If you happen to be black.

They don’t care about your money,
They don’t care what prominence you bring,
They don’t care about your family,
They only care about one thing.

We used to think the Stars and Stripes,
Meant the land of the free and brave.
But in fact it’s where injustice,
Fills too many shallow graves.

There’s an unnerving lack of safety,
As we watch our cities burn.
What America will greet us,
By the time the sun returns?

As a very much mostly white person, I really uncomfortable with this and don’t want to be telling anyone how to protest 400 years of EVIL but…

We know that some “BLM events” have been setup by fake BLM groups on social media run by Russian FSB and White supremacist trolls before. We know they intentionally want to throw gasoline on these problems.

U.S. planning to cancel visas of Chinese graduate students: sources, Reuters

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States is planning to cancel the visas of thousands of Chinese graduate students believed by President Donald Trump’s administration to have links with China’s military, two sources with knowledge of the matter said on Thursday.

The move, first reported by the New York Times, could impact 3,000 to 5,000 Chinese students and could be announced as early as this week, according to the sources, including a current U.S. official and another individual who was briefed on the administration’s internal discussions.

New Trump public land rules will let Alaska hunters kill bear cubs in dens
The ‘amazingly cruel’ move by the National Park Service reverses Obama-era regulations which also affect wolves and coyotes, The Guardian

The National Park Service is reversing regulations written by the Barack Obama administration, which banned some of the much-criticized practices for hunting the predators, including luring bears with food like doughnuts.
Jesse Prentice-Dunn, policy director for the Center for Western Priorities, called the rule change “amazingly cruel” and said it was “just the latest in a string of efforts to reduce protections for America’s wildlife at the behest of oil companies and trophy hunters”.

The Alaska senator Dan Sullivan, a Republican, said the revision was needed “not only as a matter of principle, but as a matter of states’ rights”. A tribal consortium, the Tanana Chiefs Conference, said the Obama rule was implemented without adequate tribal consultation, in disregard to rural Alaska’s dependence on wild food resources, threatening “centuries-long sustainable management practices”.

This and the previous Reuters post were h/t JM Ashby.

I’ll have to pull out the statistics, but there was a review of police brutality cases, and it was like 10% were responsible for 90% of the abuse complaints. And 1% were responsible for more than 50% (or something similar).

But the NYPD failed to send these guys packing, let alone investigated all these claims. Despite that, NYC continues paying out big bucks to those harmed by the NYPD instead of demanding the NYPD clean up its act.

Some of it also falls on the police unions, who attack any politician who demands the police be held accountable when they commit crimes.

It’s going to take a lot of work to clean up law enforcement and the criminal justice system since it’s fixed to keep persons of color in their place and doesn’t protect the public the way they claim it does.

That’s the most damning thing, too. Even if there was a glimmer of truth in the ‘bad apples’ excuse, the departments still circle the wagons around those bad apples first and foremost, and often to seeming exclusivity compared to the way ‘good cops’ get easily hounded out.

That’s the exact reason why it’s an institutional problem.

The Ghost of a Flea  May 30, 2020 • 6:49:18pm

Okay, so I don’t usually link to David French but consider this tweet:

And then the exchange with “John Hawkins” directly beneath. The French part of the conversation is not the focus here, but rather look that sequence of statements by the asshole:

If the government isn’t going use as much force as necessary step in and stop wide-scale rioting, looting and arson, what’s the point of having a government? If they can’t even keep order, what’s the point of their continued existence?

then:

They should use as little force as possible, but as much force as necessary to put an end to that. If that means gunning down rioters, looters and gangs of thugs attacking people in the street, I’m 100% okay with that.

then:

“Effective leadership” doesn’t stop criminals. Men with guns do.

then:

I am fully in favor of that and think they should go out and try to do it. But, I also believe they should use as much force as is needed to restore order. That is the first duty of government and abandoning that duty is more dangerous to society than shooting criminals.

I’m drawing this out because I think it’s a perfect representation of a kind of person that always find excuses for violence, because as reactionaries “crimes” are things that inconvenient and frightening, and “criminals” are all equally bad. But he’s either too cowardly and too lack in self awareness to acknowledge that he just keeps insisting that property crime…and protesting…require immediate lethal response.

The chaser being:

Over and over, what turns up is that the stated beliefs are not their actual beliefs, but walk-arounds that use existing cultural language of ideals and principles to avoid engaging with the entirely anti-social base assumptions that actually motivate them.

FACT: Russian and White supremacist trolls have created fake BLM groups on Facebook and setup fake protests to cause trouble. This is everyone’s problem.

FACT: Neo-nazis in America are trying to use unrest and the COVID-19 lockdowns as an excuse to start a civil war. This is everyone’s problem.

CONJECTURE BASED ON FACT: Donald Trump is perfectly happy to allow all of this to happen and will encourage it as long as Putin keeps sending the checks and promises to steal an unwinnable election for him. This is everyone’s problem.

FACT: Russians have been spreading Anti-vax bullshit to gullible Americans and Europeans for years. They are doing it with COVID-19 now. This is everyone’s problem.

FACT: People gathering in large numbers right now, is going to start a massive COVID-19 2nd wave that’s going to be a bloodbath. This is everyone’s problem.

FACT: COVID-19 doesn’t give 2 shits what color you are, if you are an asshole or not, if you are liberal or conservative. Anyone can get it, and a shit-ton probably did today. The idea that only old people die of this has been proven horseshit as well. Again this is everyone’s problem.

FACT: A civil war or civil war adjacent event right now will break down the barely keeping up supply chains in the US and millions of people will starve to death regardless of COVID-19. The COVID-19 “Depression” will look like a Golden Age in comparison. This will be *everyone’s* problem.

When that happens, then what?

You think Mitch McConnell is going to call for his resignation? You think any of those boot licking clowns in the White House will 25th Amendment his ass? You think the pentagon will refuse to answer the phone?

Are we going to have a banana republic style civil war in the middle of a pandemic? Great Idea.

Charles Johnson has the blog set up so that if a post gets a certain number of down-dings, it gets hidden. You can see it by clicking on the red type. If it goes past even more, it goes away altogether. It is done automatically to keep the blog on a positive keel.

Far-Right Infiltrators and Agitators in George Floyd Protests: Indicators of White Supremacists:
When anyone studies the Middle East for as long as I have, you become practically immune to conspiracy theories. The word in Arabic “muamarrat” is pervasive and after hearing my whole adult life about the hidden forces behind various catastrophes one automatically winces when someone tries to push the real story they heard somewhere or saw on social media.
The protests that have torn through the United States, following the murder of George Floyd at the hands of Minnesota police officers, shift the emphasis in real time videos broadcast nationally. The images challenge our beliefs about who is really protesting and for what reason.

This is likely the same convoy that went through the Mall and is pictured in several other posts.

There are two placards on the front of several of the trucks.
The left hand one says “DC ARNG 74TC”
The right hand one says “547TH LMT219” (Where the ‘LMT is followed by three digits)

In translation:
DC ARNG - District of Columbia Army Reserve National Guard (aka ‘The National Guard’)
74TC - 74th Troop Command - A Regimental size unit of the DC National Guard that encompasses 3 units:
- 372nd Military Police Battalion
- 547th Transportation Company
- 104th Maintenance Company

The trucks are LMTs (Replacements for the venerable ‘Deuce and a Halfs’) from the 547th Transportation Company of the DC National Guard 74th Troop Command.

All National Guard troops are supposed to be trained and equipped for riot duty. But most likely these folks are from either the Transportation Company or the MP battalion.

The call-up and deployment of the National Guard was completely expected.

The next level up will be when units drawn from the 82nd, 101st and 18th Airborne Corps are deployed in DC.

That was chaos. When you watch the video, the guy puts the gun down and the man above then tackles him. Then there’s a cop, and I can’t tell what happened to him, but he wasn’t very mobile. Then you had a bunch of people rushing to remove the magazine from the gun.

Well, no butterflies, but here are some pigeons (we don’t get spectacular birds around here, except the hummers, and they’re too fast for me so far).

On my errands today, I gave a squirrel a peanut, and every squirrel in the area came running. I was too busy fending them off (with more peanuts) to take any pictures, but here are a few flowers.

Personally, if you’re white, I would let POC lead on this discussion…

If COVID-19 weren’t a thing and if there weren’t agents of Russia involved, I wouldn’t have said a goddamned word and would unquestionably support everything.

But that’s not reality right now. There are issues here that are existential threats to American democracy and everyone’s lives, and that is what I was commenting on and I made it clear that even under those facts I was still uncomfortable commenting. It’s been going on for a few days, so I waited until I was sure that Ratfucking was involved before I chimed in this way, and there unquestionably is. It’s not under debate.

I just heard a new term. It was from the MuckRake podcast that was posted on an earlier thread.

Doom Scrolling (aka Doom Surfing)-

“Doomscrolling and doomsurfing are new terms referring to the tendency to continue to surf or scroll through bad news, even though that news is saddening, disheartening, or depressing. Many people are finding themselves reading continuously bad news about COVID-19 without the ability to stop or step back.”

merriam-webster.com

I have had to step back and take a break several times when the news got too intense. I also have been working very hard to cut folks slack rather than react immediately. I hope that all on lgf will forgive me for my many transgressions.

(BTW - Thank you to the Lizard who posted it. It brought up some interesting points and helped clarify some thoughts that I had. Still too early for me to be that apocalyptic, though.)

When I got there, I was all, “where’s the spaghetti?” “In the fridge, we’re going to eat the leftovers tomorrow. I told you that in the message.” So I pulled out my phone and sure enough, that’s what it said. But I ate some spaghetti anyway.

What did we learn from this? That the magic words “I made spaghetti” will bring me running.

How Western media would cover Minneapolis if it happened in another country

Ethnic violence has plagued the country for generations, and decades ago it captured the attention of the world, but recently the news coverage and concern are waning as there seems to be no end in sight to the oppression. “These are ancient, inexplicable hatreds fueling these ethnic conflicts and inequality,” said Andreja Dulic, a foreign correspondent whose knowledge of American English consists of a semester course in college and the occasional session on the Duolingo app. When told the United States is only several hundred years old, he shrugged and said, “In my country, we have structures still from the Roman empire. In their culture, Americans think that a 150-year-old building is ancient history.”

My brother’s reaction is that I see white supremacists and Putin everywhere, while of course it’s antifa and the Obama administration that’s behind all ills. It is critical that we determine who exactly is responsible for the violence and looting.

Tonight my sister wanted to watch news after we saw the “Hairspray Live” production on TV. And we saw Chicago being looted, including the Macy’s in the Loop, and smoke was billowing out from some stores. There was also an interview with Garry McCarthy, the former head of the Chicago Police Department, hired by Rahm Emmanuel in 2011 and subsequently fired by him. McCarthy seemed to be parroting the lines that the whole problem in this nation is that the police are handcuffed and not being sufficiently respected. Sigh. We have a monster as President and a political party who would see this violence as the opportunity to change the conversation away from Trump’s mishandling of the Covid pandemic and back to his comfort zone of blaming minorities and championing “law and order”.

Whether the instigators are anti-fascists (unlikely, since unlike black bloc, tend to be reactive) or white supremacists, it doesn’t excuse police reactions like covering up their badge numbers or macing indiscriminately (catching older people and 10 year old kids).

That is true, especially in my hometown which had the “police riot” in 1968 during the Democratic convention. But I haven’t heard that the Chicago police engaged in this type of activity during the protests tonight. In any case, if voters fear instability and violence, they may ignore police transgressions. Of course the most famous comment regarding 1968 convention riot was courtesy of the original Mayor Daley: The police aren’t here to create disorder; they’re here to preserve disorder. This country is blowing itself to pieces like a Fourth of July firework.

There is no leadership from Washington. There is no voice of reason from the White House. It seems to be that the worst racists, fascists, and anarchists in our country are burning our society down.

They are a small minority, but they are are having a devastating affect. Because most of us are just like “What the fuck?” Most of us, really, are sheep. We won’t get out of our homes, and say “Stop this shit! It needs to end!”

Really, we won’t. We are, by our lack of action, allowing the the Proud Boys, the Boogaloos, and the white supremecist movement to tear this country to pieces.

And our President loves them. They are the change agents that he (or at least Steve Miller, that little fucking fascist toad) has been counting on to hide the fact that the Orange Shit Goblin has fucked up the response to a virus that is killing us and get him re-elected.

Although, one way to change MPD culture is to have the department sued into nonexistence, so there’s that.

Seems to me like some kind of coast-to-coast police riot is going on.

slate.com

This crisis seems to be evolving; what started off as a protest of a specific injustice is transforming into something bigger.

It’s looking like the police have formed a side: “The Cops”. They feel threatened by the general public and they’ve resorted to outright attacking anyone in their way, whether it’s the press, innocent bystanders, random onlookers. There’s video clips of cops firing rubber bullets indiscriminately into crowds, the NYPD clip of them bulldozing their way through a crowd.

We’re entering uncharted territory here. The police are heavily armed, all too often with military weaponry……and they’re increasingly getting out of control.

Wondering why there are so many helicopters in the area:

It seems that these looters have been waiting for some time.

When I was out in the afternoon and went to the grocery store I saw some college-age folk coming back, I think, from one of the protests. They were talking to an older black woman, who seemed exasperated. I felt for them, as it is clear all they want is to drive attention to social problems.

Now the looters… they are a different story. These kinds of thing happen every decade or two. Mostly not in winter. A lot of people are just opportunistic.

Then I have to wonder about the professional agitators. These people want to see the world burn.

As I noted earlier, La Mesa is pretty milquetoast. So all these looters at shopping centers could be local, but I wonder too how many come in from surrounding areas. La Mesa in the confluence of three major freeways in the east San Diego metro region, with lots of through traffic.

They are in the old downtown area of La Mesa. Normally ultra quiet.

This group of guys really are being the typical mindless rioters. Senseless, of course.

Sad because that part of the area is pretty good to visit for an afternoon walk and shopping.

The real idiocy is that the polity of La Mesa would be that the majority of residents would support social change, BLM, etc.

So when groups like this comes in the side effect will be doubly bad, because locals will just care more about their lives rather than helping others.

Thanks.

The only protests going on in Nebraska are in Omaha. The area of 72nd St and Dodge St (far west Omaha, Senator Megan Hunt’s [D] district) has had Omaha police using tear gas and pepper balls for the second day today. Protestors were on Dodge Street and the police moved to violently remove them.

Rioting then erupted downtown in the evening, with graffiti, Molotov cocktails, eggs, &c. The city prosecutor declared the riot an unlawful assembly, and the police moved in to clear the downtown area.

Like other cities, protestors tried to stop the violent actions. The police chief described the protests as peaceful with a few agitators, including some with guns (this is an open-carry state).

Mayor Jean Stothert (R) paints all the protestors the same (whether they were the peaceful protestors or the violent agitators), putting the blame on all of them.

So from Bryan Tuck’s livestream, it appears the typical makeup - young men. There was one woman that showed on video while I was watching. There were others in cars that were going down the streets.

Downtown La Mesa sits between two major area freeways, with the north-south connection between them being a city street (Spring Street if you want to look it up on a map.)

So anyone can come in quickly, do whatever, then scramble back onto the freeway.

The area of downtown La Mesa is pretty mixed. Mostly white but also many people of color, and various people from around the world. It’s not the locals doing this.

This is where the whole 2nd Amenment falls apart…they are not summoning anything resembling a “well-regulated Militia”.

Again, if you want to use a weapon to defend yourself and your home, then I guess that is your good right. But to use a gun effectively in public, especially in the confused setting of a mass shooting/riot, calls for years of training, good situational awareness and nerves of steel.

This is not a skills set you can just pick up over the counter of your local sporting goods store.

The woman who allegedly threw a lit Molotov cocktail into an NYPD car full of cops early Saturday has been slapped with a federal charge of damaging a police vehicle — a far cry from the attempted murder charges sought by the NYPD.

Samantha Shader, 27, of Catskill, New York, allegedly tossed the makeshift explosive into the marked police vehicle parked at Eastern Parkway and Washington Avenue in Crown Heights, Brooklyn around 1:12 a.m, as a night of destructive protests over the killing of George Floyd winded down, federal prosecutors said.

The bottle shattered two of the vehicle’s windows as four cops sat inside — but the gas inside did not ignite, the feds said in a criminal complaint released early Sunday.

Prosecutors obtained a witness video they said showed Shader hurl the device as a man attempted to shield her from onlookers.

The NYPD initially pressed for attempted-murder charges against the demonstrator — but federal prosecutors have now taken over the case and assumed custody.

re: #459 Shropshire Slasher

Expect the charges to be escalated.

But here’s the thing - this is the reverse of what typically happens and is how charges usually flow when a cop murders or engages in excessive force against a person in custody. They usually aren’t even charged, or if they are, it’s at the lowest range of the charging guidelines.

Recall that the cop who murdered Mr. Floyd was charged with the lowest level of homicide in MN, even though it appears premeditated.

The NYPD union is notorious for going after prosecutors and politicians who dare attempt to hold them accountable. Heck, the union has led riots in the past, and they’ve gotten away with doing damage that anyone else would have been prosecuted and imprisoned for.

It again goes to the fact that law enforcement is held to an entirely different standard than everyone else that allows them to get away with murder - literally and figuratively. That we have to have this argument every time a black person is murdered by a cop shows that this institutional racism and acceptance of police violence has to change.

Cops should be held to a higher standard - not a lower one.

Cops should be held accountable when they kill someone in the line of duty where their life was not threatened.

Cops should be fired for engaging in excessive force and prevented from being hired by police departments elsewhere (national registry of records on police brutality/excessive force). Departments must hold bad cops accountable and drum them out.

It’s wishful thinking of course, because there’s a lot of politicians who wont stand up to police departments or unions because they’d be seen as weak on crime (even though they’re standing up against crimes by cops against the rest of us). But that’s how right wingers and statists will frame things.

Morning friend. While I think we all agree that the murder of George Floyd was premeditated, or at least intentional - the standard for 2nd-degree murder - I am still of the opinion that the prosecutor didn’t think that charge could stick. Minnesota has convicted a police officer in a wrongful death; unfortunately, it’s the exact reverse situation, a black officer, Mohamed Noor, convicted of 3rd-degree murder for killing a white woman. That does not set an encouraging precedent.

That’s exactly the problem. Holding a cop accountable for the premeditated homicide of a black man *is* law and order. But politicians and prosecutors rarely see it that way, and even jurors don’t buy into that.

We need wholesale change on the law - modify qualified immunity and hold cops to a higher standard under the law. Make sure that there are automatic procedures in place for any abuse or deaths. Automatic desk duty for abuse. Automatic suspensions without pay for deaths. Special prosecutors who deal with abuse and deaths. And prosecutions for homicide when the deaths involve unarmed persons.

Even now, the criminal justice system is trying to blame the victim for his own death - having a prosecutor reluctant to charge, having a medical report somehow insinuate that the victim had a condition (even though toxicology takes weeks to come back), and despite the video showing zero rationale for the acts by any of the cops present.

All four should be prosecuted in the death. All four were fired. That’s not enough. They should never be allowed to work in law enforcement again. We need a national database to deal with abusive cops and those who were fired for cause.

We need national change and coordinated changes on the law.

Because this is about law and order, and holding everyone accountable, including those who are charged with upholding it.

It’s become clear that America’s police forces have to be denazified. Take away all of their military equipment, have them patrol without firearms on them, no-one engaged in a nonviolent crime should be arrested without a warrant, just ticketed. Noone should die for allegedly passing a fake $20 bill or selling loose cigarettes. New cops should be recruited from civilian life, not military, and should mostly be women and poc.

Mrs. Fish was explaining to the elder fishspawn about what was going on in our state, and how we might have people coming to visit depending on if anyone needed help. She asked me what his supposed crime was, and when I said “supposedly passing counterfeit bills,” she looked at me like horns were growing out of my head. That is a stupid, STUPID thing to forcibly restrain a man over, let alone killing him.

I agree with the first two. Unfortunately, our populace is too armed and dangerous to send them out without some sort of weapons.

That is a separate issue to be addressed.

And the other issue is that of how District Attorneys and State Prosecutors approach charging police officers with crimes: in general, they are used to working with LEOs to obtain indictments, working against them can present a bit of a conflict of interest.

We need a separate mechanism to deal with that which removes or mitigates that problem.

And, unfortunately lost in the fatal aftermath, any details of just why it was George Floyd got nabbed. How many people (even retail workers) look at their currency? Was Floyd a suspected counterfeiter? Did he even know/suspect the bill was fake? What are the “normal” procedures when counterfeit currency is discovered (I’m guessing “fatal abuse” isn’t the standard - maybe)?

Well the date on my two stroke gas can says 6-19, so I’m off to get fresh non-ethanol gas so I can do my most dreaded chore, weed whacking. Gotta suit up for the giant hogweed.

en.m.wikipedia.org

The sap of the giant hogweed plant is phototoxic. Contact with the plant sap prevents the skin from being able to protect itself from sunlight, which leads to phytophotodermatitis, a serious skin inflammation.[25] A phototoxic reaction can begin as soon as 15 minutes after contact with the sap. Photosensitivity peaks between 30 minutes and two hours after contact but can last for several days.[13][8]

Morning Lizardim from the cool and cloudy wild north country. The news reports that last night was much quieter; the deployment of 4,000 National Guard soldiers and the establishment of an effective counter-strategy appears to have had the intended effect. Minneapolis stands tall and proud after an uncertain night. How go things among the lizardfolk on this quiet Sunday morning?

It’s been sunny all morning to the east in StP, although my furnace did kick in when the thermostat hit the ‘wake’ setting.

I didn’t hear anything amiss in my neighborhood last night but I have no idea and haven’t seen any news specific to the West 7th neighborhood. I don’t have a reason to go anywhere today so I may just stay put.

Yeah, it’s 65 degrees in the house right now as I left a couple of windows open overnight (intentionally). It’s glorious. Why do I get the sinking feeling that the person making that call might’ve been a Karen or her male equivalent?

509
stpaulbear  May 31, 2020 • 6:40:38am

The article in the Minneapolis StarTrib that caught my attention this morning was about how neighborhoods have given up on police protection and are organizing to protect themselves.

After four long nights without assistance from first responders in the wake of riots and looting after the death of George Floyd, Longfellow residents decided to take matters into their own hands. Many coordinated efforts to block off side streets along this stretch of East Lake Street, using caution tape, saw horses and makeshift barricades to protect residential areas from rioters.

Although police and the National Guard greatly outnumbered peaceful protesters on Saturday, that wasn’t always the case, and in neighborhoods across the Twin Cities, residents did everything they could to protect their own.

In Longfellow, Hillary Oppmann watched vandals loot the corner Walgreens for three straight nights without interference before arsonists finally lit it on fire last night. Firefighters didn’t make it to the scene for more than 7 hours.

“We can’t lose anymore community assets, like our libraries, pharmacies and post office,” said Oppmann, who lives three doors down from Lake Street. “They were simply left to burn.”

I don’t know how they do it in Minneapolis, but here in NYC (for as long as I can remember) retail clerks usually look at bills BEFORE they put them in the till/make change: yeah, it’s going to be a PITA if it turns out it’s counterfeit (the “owner” is stuck with it, or else it’s supposed to be turned in); but like I said above, who checks these things, in the age of ATMs….?

Though maybe Floyd WAS drunk - not relevant though: a funny-money call shouldn’t need four cops as a response: and there’s certainly no excuse for the fatal level of force applied here: or the “depraved indifference” of Officer Chauvin’s pals…

A lot of retail outlets here (small bodegas and the like) often have signs up stating they won’t accept $100 bills (or occasionally, $50s): one supposes that with inflationary 21st-Century price levels, the $20 would be considered nearly “small change” - but they still hawkeye the bills just in case.

Reminds me of the old Barney Miller episode: they bust some old guy for passing fake $1 bills: he explains that he stole the plates from the Mint years ago: but that counterfeiting money $1 at a time turned out to be more trouble than it was worth….

A handful of adobe settlements in the Southwest; on territory that wasn’t even part of the U.S. until 1848. For the most part, the indigenous peoples of this continent built with biodegradable materials and they’re long gone.

If you’re looking for stone structures, you have to go south of the Rio Grande.

Not entirely true. Around here there are canals that were dug out starting around 600/700 CE by the Hohokam. Some of the canals were simply repurposed and reused by Mormon farmers in the late 1800s, because they were superbly engineered over a thousand years before.

More to structures, there’s a huge platform, 27 feet high and the length of a football field made out of caliche a few miles to the northwest of where I’m sitting. It’s called Mesa Grande and was a Hohokam settlement during the late period (1100-1400) It was owned by “B” movie actress Acquanetta before she sold it to the city back in the 1980s. Not a whole lot of excavating has gone on (due to money issues) but it’s a pretty huge complex.

This is the kind of shit we’re looking at, opportunists taking advantage of an unsettled situation to just do their own thing. And, for the record, Jake Paul is a multi-millionaire, making his money off doing stupid shit on YouTube. I hope he gets deplatformed.

Yep. And this is why I’m sick and tired of hearing about rioting. The focus should be on the outrageous fact that the three other murderers haven’t been arrested. They are just as guilty as Chauvin and need to be brought to justice.

re: #496 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

I agree with the first two. Unfortunately, our populace is too armed and dangerous to send them out without some sort of weapons.

That is a separate issue to be addressed.

And the other issue is that of how District Attorneys and State Prosecutors approach charging police officers with crimes: in general, they are used to working with LEOs to obtain indictments, working against them can present a bit of a conflict of interest.

We need a separate mechanism to deal with that which removes or mitigates that problem.

Violent crime is way down. The police can keep their firearms in their patrol cars unless responding to a report of an armed suspect.

But of course, all that - STUPID as it certainly is, is all irrelevant now.

Checkout clerks examine my bills every time I use a 50, and half the time when I use a 20. They hold it up to the light, they draw a line across it with a high-lighter uses some special blacklight ink… Every time.

Ditto for the Nimrod/MAGAt in #474 and #559.
Considering that he was out-numbered infinity to one, and had an ineffective (though potentially lethal) weapon, it speaks well of the protestors that they didn’t literally tear him to pieces after he presented an imminent threat by actually drawing his bow. They didn’t have the same regard for his car, which will no doubt enrage MAGAt viewers who reflexively value property above human life.

…..

Small minority? It looks as though over 40% are fine with Trump — which means that the racists are in charge to destroy our country. They may not be joining mobs to literally burn places down — but they are all in favor of destroying our institutions and crowning a dictator-for-life at the head of our government.

Read in WaPo this morning, and I’m not sure how to take it. First thought before reading was suspicion. After reading, there does appear to be some data. Some of us may be better able to read for comprehension (smile) than I am.

They opened schools in France and closed them down a week later due to escalated COVID19 cases.

Then Montreal tried it. Same result, one week later they closed back up again.

Fellow white people, just because you don’t understand or haven’t seen it or experienced it personally, doesn’t mean it isn’t real. After 2016, everyone raced to read “Hillbilly Elegy” to understand disgruntled white people who voted for Trump. Are you doing the same now?

I grew up in the industrial Midwest at a time when working white people never had it better. Those people were racist long before they experienced political alienation or economic insecurity…

I wonder how much screaming Putin is doing about Crew Dragon. He not only lost the P.R. advantage of ferrying U.S. astronauts to the ISS, but those sweet U.S. dollars as well. Add to that the loss of money from other countries as Crew Dragon can carry 7 people at a time.

See my #13. About 1 min into the video, some info about the “forgery” issue is presented.
